    The best thing to happen in my career as a painter/body man is working at a start to finish shop for 3 years. Disassemble, repair, prime, prep, paint, buff and detail. It was the most valuable learning experience for a new technician, and made me a well rounded tradesman.

    • @dropinbiking92
      @dropinbiking92 3 года назад +4

      100% Agree. I started from the bottom at a shop just cleaning cars, cleaning the shop, prepping. Than I got onto polishing, than I had to dial in my polishing, than learn some basic disassembly and assembly, than I got to small dent repair and priming stuff, THAN into the booth. It was a LONGGGG few years, but I'm glad the boss put me through the steps in that order.

      @@dropinbiking92 I went to a trade school in my late teens and thought I was ready for the business... Lol, I learned very quickly how much I needed to develop my skills to be a real professional. I think everyone should start by washing cars and sweeping floors, it builds integrity and shows the potential mentors you really pay attention to detail enough to be worth their time to teach you more.

      @@stax6057 I did one of those 'coop' programs in highschool. It was basically credits towards my education but it was real world work. I chose a body shop. I feel bad because I was a useless punk, and never listened, but if it wasn't for that. I wouldn't be where I am. I'm painting for that same shop at the moment, with all the same people, mostly. Funny how life comes full circle.

      @@dropinbiking92 indeed my dude. My first time holding a spray gun was to lay etching primer in tech school and on the very first trigger pull and pass I ran the dogshit out of it. Me with no hesitation, grabs a tack rack, wipes the run, and lays a double coat. My instructor was in tears laughing so hard lol. Now it's 6 years later and I work at a muscle car shop working on cars I grew up dreaming about. It does come full circle if youre smart enough to not get in your own way

      @@stax6057 My first time was actually while I was still cleaning and prepping cars for the first shop I was employed at. I thought I was hot shit so I got a cheap primer gun, and smacked down some direct gloss black on my old project car, at my house. It pretty much came up satin because of all the orange peel, overspray, and die back. Yeahhh that was a learning experience. At least I knew to take everything off, and sand every edge, that paint stuck like glue. Just looked terrible. I eventually buffed it all up. What a long process.

    I've done complete resprays in a weekend. I wouldn't attempt that now I might add. I also went from being just a painter into panel beating and even mechanicing. At one place I worked at I'd tell the boss I'd worked up and he'd say well in that case put a new clutch in that Sierra. This was back in the 80's.

    Hey mate,
    I love your attitude, very inspiring and great advice on upskilling, it's true for every industry, it's easy to become redundant or replaced these days, you need to demonstrate your value. I think that what you consider "not perfect" is probably a masterpiece to the average or even majority of people in the industry. I'm not in the automotive industry so I was wondering if you've you done a vid on what is acceptable vs not when getting your car back from a repair job, e.g. insurance job. Are nibs acceptable? Orange peel level? Crap in the basecoat that wasn't prepped properly?
    Average person probably doesn't see these things, but if you're an enthusiast or a detailer you pick up on it easily.

    1.3mm - suits clearcoat / thinner basecoats
    1.4mm - suits basecoat / cellulose / synthetic / 2K and lower viscosity material; a great all rounder.
    1.8mm - suits higher build materials such as thick topcoats application and primers.

    Fantastic job Gunny and the car looks great, I totally agree with your work ethic as this job looks as good as it needs to be for what the car is, if you were doing an Aston Martin then you might spend another day on the car and that would look as good as it needs to be for what it is.
    If you spent the same amount of time on the Aston as you did your friends car then the Aston would probably look under refinished and not quite good enough for the car, the same the applies to your friends car if you put the same amount of time into it as you would the Aston it would look over refinished for the car.
    Ok I'm rambling on a load of rubbish again 😂🙄 have a good weekend Gunny and hope you like your new job 👍

    Like i always say if you try to make everything perfect in this trade you are not making money 95% off all car owners won't notice those 2 extra pieces of dust or if the panel has a tiny rippel in it make it as good you can within the time limit. i did this opel astra today it was not in the best shape dents and scratches all over the car we did the half of rear bumper bar and the quarter panel . Bumper bar had just some scratches on it so sanded it out very fine to 600 grit and just put plastic primer and then basecoat that saved me atleast 30 minutes of priming and resanding the quarter panel had one small dent i got that one out with some pdr and some chips around the gas flap i think some one tried to pry it open instead of sanding those out and priming more then half way on the quarter panel and having to blend in the door i just knifed those chips in with some filler put a bit of washprimer over it and i was able to keep my color away from the door saved me another prime and sand and blend i got it done in around 1 hour and 10 minutes my boss charged 1000 bucks and it looked mint owner of the car was happy my boss was happy and i was happy with a exta 50 bucks cash on top of my salary
