The Italian Expression PROPRIO can be quite confusing, since it has several meanings and some are very different from each other. We are help to help you! If you are learning Italian and are curious about common Italian expressions, this one is for you!

Actually I advocate, as does Manu, that one learns a new language best in ones mother tongue. So for me the language of instruction needs to be in English, with Italian examples. He is excellent at this.

"Proprio" has to many meanings but the explanations are great.
Just like the word “well” does in English. It’s an expected evolution of vocabulary through usage over time and through commonly accepted practices. Just look at how Americans continue to mutilate English not just through adjusted spelling and fanciful grammar but also invented pronunciation. It will eventually become so incomprehensible to English speakers that it will qualify not just as a dialect but as a different language.

Molto interessante! I didn't know the word had so many uses. I've seen it quite a lot in Italian Acts of Death and Burial as the location where the person died: "casa propria."
I heard you use "i miei" as "my parents"; as a long time student of the Italian language I never heard that expression before. But it makes sense when one thinks about it.

Grazie, Manu! It occurs to me that "No fa una piega" is related to the verb "spiegare" -- to explain or "unfold" (make smooth and plain).
I'm wondering about the need for the pronoun "mi" in "Lui ha detto proprio che mi aspettavo." Maybe there's a basic rule that I'm forgetting!

Hi Gatto Nero! If you say "Lui ha detto proprio quello/ciò che MI aspettavo" means that someone told something (to somebody) that you expected; here "mi" is requested because "aspettarsi" is a reflexive verb so when you conjugate it you should use the reflexive pronoun "mi". If you say "Lui MI ha detto proprio quello/ciò che MI aspettavo" then it means that someone told YOU something that you expected, so the first "mi" is the Indirect Object Pronoun (mi = a me = to me). 😊
