    Good to listen to your content again. It was informative and entertaining. I chuckled about the warning message when your girlfriend arrives home and appreciated the picture of Stonehenge as your phone screen save. A touch of class. The automatic link for the re-ordering of ink was a good taster for more sophisticated automations, which is a critical part of H.A. A video on the next level of notifications, therefore, would be a good idea and much appreciated.

    Can you do a video on the following?
    Automation goal: DRY programming (Don’t Repeat Yourself)
    I want to have quite a lot zone notifications sent to my devices. But not a lot of automations. I want to keep it DRY. So I thought to put multiple “person” triggers per zone event (“enters”) and have the notification message filled with a template. I don’t want to make the “same automation” for each person individually.
    My aim in human-words / pseudo-code will be : When person Jacqueline or person Ton leaves zone Den Haag, send notification with message “{{person}} leaves {{zone}}” to group.
    This is my automation so far:
    alias: "Notify Location: Den Haag - Leaves >> group JacqTon"
    description: "Notify Location: Den Haag - Leaves >> group JacqTon"
    trigger:
    - platform: zone
    entity_id: person.jacqueline
    zone: zone.den_haag
    event: leave
    - platform: zone
    entity_id: person.ton
    zone: zone.den_haag
    event: leave
    condition: []
    action:
    - service: notify.jacqton
    data:
    message: "{{ person_name }} leaves {{ zone_status}}"
    title: "Location update {{ person_name }} leaves {{ zone_status}}"
    mode: single
    Output of automation: “leaves”
    Wished for output: “Ton leaves Den Haag” or “Jacqueline leaves Den Haag”
    - depending on who triggered
    Problem:
    The notification is sent, but the message shows “leaves” , it doesn’t resolve the templates {{ person_name }} and {{ zone_status}}
    I guess because the automation does not know which one to take
    in the conditions part I cannot ( or don’t know how to) select “if a certain person has triggerd”
    Questions:
    What template attributes can I use to get this information? In pseudo-code something like “triggered.person_name” or “triggered.zone_status” or “this.person_name”
    Or is my approach bassically worng? What would be a better approach?

Some times, Google home shows the device "offline" even when the device is online and can be controlled with the native Android app (smart life). Is there a way to get a push notification on the Google home app itself for the automation events which triggers the garden pump to be "on" and "off" at a set time?

    The weakness of the notify option is that you need to have the HA app on your phone. My wife does not want the app on her phone, so the only way to send a message to her would be to sign up for a third party SMS service. I know they can be cheap, but something in-house would be nicer.

    • @KaleoMgmt
      @KaleoMgmt 2 года назад +1

      What type of Notification would be "acceptable" if not from the App or SMS? I'm curious if HA could send an email as a notification. I believe there's a way to connect to Telegram if she has that app.
      This is a curious one. I'd love to hear what you end up doing!

      Indeed, you can use Telegram for instance, but that's an app too.... Other solution might be too send a voice message to your Google Home or Alexa speaker, but those are listening all day to what you say. Not sure what's the best option for your wife.

    • @KaleoMgmt
      @KaleoMgmt 2 года назад +2

    • @bennylloyd-willner9667
      @bennylloyd-willner9667 2 года назад

      In my view, it is a little bit more "a weakness of your wife". Saying "I want all the functionality for free, but not with any extra apps whatsoever" is asking for too much IMO. I'm not disrespecting your wife, but it is a bit like eating the cookie and still have it to me. I don't feel like the HA app is more "unprivate" or "unsecure" than any other app.

And then use that helper as condition in your notify automation, but that seems a bit much.

    I have 10 motion sensors, i want to "arm" them when i go away and have a notification on my phone showing what name of the sensor that was triggered

    • @KaleoMgmt
      @KaleoMgmt 2 года назад +1

      Just finished something similar today. I created a 'binary_sensor' Group for my Door/Window sensors. If anything in that group is open, then 'binary_sensor.doors_windows' (the name of the Group) is set to On.
      I'm using that state change as the Trigger, then using the Template for each of the individual sensors so that I can find out exactly which one caused the Group State change. The Message Template looks like:
      {% if states("binary_sensor.lumi_door_back_on_off")=="on" -%}The Back Door is Open.{%- endif %}
      {% if states("binary_sensor.lumi_door_front_on_off")=="on" -%}The Front Door is Open.{%- endif %}
      {% if states("binary_sensor.lumi_window_dining_room_1_on_off")=="on" -%}The Front Dining Room Window is Open.{%- endif %}
      There's probably a cleaner way to iterate through the sensors, but this works for now!

    • @SmartHomeJunkie
      @SmartHomeJunkie  2 года назад +2

      Totally doable, even in one automation with trigger IDs. I will create a video about trigger IDs in the near future.

    • @SmartHomeJunkie
      @SmartHomeJunkie  2 года назад +1

      @Chris Yes, it can be done way cleaner using trigger ID'S.

    Question, these notifications only work if you are within your wifi network range, correct? Or are you using a cloud service to get them while you are away?

    • @SmartHomeJunkie

      Yes, they work also if you can connect remotely. You can use Nabu Casa or DuckDNS work nginx reverse proxy for this.

      @@SmartHomeJunkie Just used DuckDNS to set up dynamic dns + nginx for ssl connections and it's working great so far. Nginx only accepts https connections over port 8124, port forwarded the same port in my router and now the only traffic allowed over my dynamic dns url is my secure Home Assistant Traffic. Thanks for the idea!

    i would love to use the home assistant app for notifications for family members, but there is no reasonable way to have permissions or configuration per user. I can't have young family members or guests seeing all sorts of tabs and options for logs and also other lovelace cards.

    • @KaleoMgmt
      @KaleoMgmt 2 года назад +2

      Another idea would be to use Twilio. That way you can send an Text alert rather than just an app notification.
      I have that set up so I can send importants alerts to my wife (medication time, traveling, etc.) via Text, and inconsequential alerts (washer or dryer are finished) via Notifications.
      If you wanted an alert sent to the kids you could send it via Text, and not need to worry about the app.

      Setting someone as a "User" limits the side menu option, and in the Manage Dashboard page you can set Dashboards to "Admin Only".
      We have a User dashboard called "Guest Phones". I set it up for our babysitter so that she can kill the lights or run scenes, timers, etc. when she's getting the kids ready for bed.
      I agree, though, it would be nice to have deeper permission option for Users.
