Home Assistant Actionable Notifications on iOS AND Android
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 авг 2024
- Home Assistant notifications just got even better and easier! Today we are looking at an updated guide on how to do Home Assistant actionable notifications on both iOS and Android since the latest update made the process much simpler by making the process for either platform, the same. We will take a look at basic notifications, image notifications, actionable notifications and I'll even throw in a little bonus.

"didn't you already make this video?" -- stuff changes so fast, and there's always new information that wasn't captured last time. Plus, as a newbie, I'm glad for repeat topics.
Very true! Glad you found it useful and thanks for the comment as always!
Happy to see this update. I watched your last notification video, and in following the iOS steps quickly realized something was different, so a quick read over the documentation online showed me things had just been updated...Excellent work as always!
Was definitely an overdue update! Thanks for the support as always!
Thanks again Lewis, you're always on point and explain things well. I struggle reading documentation unless it's specific to what I'm doing and your videos make it possible for me to get the most from home assistant. Happy new year, keep up the great work!
Thanks Simon, appreciate the comment and support. Happy New Year to you!
Old video… STILL AMAZING! Thank you so much; this really started me down a new path.
I am have just started researching HA for my house and it seems that your channel is the only one that I have been watching lately.
Keep up the great tutorials. I would love to see more DIY projects, specifically adding audio, both listen and response to an application like this video.
Thanks Richard, appreciate the support! I certainly will and definitely want to make some more DIY stuff!
Thanks, complete new user here and in the space of a weekend you’ve become my first point of call already due to your clear and concise explanations
Wonderful to see and learn from you!
You have been gifted with the pedagogy that works.
Thank you so much for your videos, they help me a lot.
In fact, your videos are the best!
Thanks so much!
Thank you for this video! I was so intimidated by the documentation about Actionable Notifications in the docs. This got me my first Actionable Notification within the 10 Minutes of the video :D
Love your work. Great information and clear explanations.
Very nice! I'm just getting started with HA and your channel has helped a lot. While watching this, I configured an automation to alert me when my garage door is left open and give me a button to close it. It even integrated with my Apple Watch so I don't have to look at my phone. I'm loving HA more every day.
Amazing 🙌
Very nice joby my man. Even though I saw the release notes, I was wondering how to configure those custom actions. Thanks for the explanation and keep doing the great work for us n00bs :)
Thank you Matej!
Off to update my notifications!
Dude, for real, you're the best!
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for.
Good clear video Lewis, thank you!
Cheers Rob!
As usual, great video
Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation, which helped a lot.
Hi Lewis, as always amazing work and very clearly explained. I was hoping you might help with having more than one actional custom buttons, I have two buttons showing but how to you work the identification between the triggers, If I have two time delays neither trigger works, it is almost like it needs an if or else type thing. Any help would be amazing to show how to accomplish two or more custom buttons. Cheers Dave
Very nice and easy to follow video. I have now set up my first notification, it runs perfectly . Keep up your good work
Excellent, glad it was useful!
Thanks buddy!
Nice one as always!
Thanks Martin, appreciate it!
LIked bc of the outro. Nice job!
Haha thanks, don't think many people got that far!
Everything Smart Home, always +1
Hey thank you my friend! 🙏
Great info! Thank you!
Thanks!
This is amazing! thanks for this.
Cheers Neil!
Great Vid! 👍
Excellent video!
Thanks Ray!
Hi Lewis, first of all, thanks for the effort you put into this video. It got me up and running in no time. Have you seen any issue with the image not updating in the actionable notification? For me, it appears that even though the image in the Home Assistant source folder is updated, the one that appears in the actionable notification is older. Any suggestions?
this is great, will definitely be setting this up :)
I'm sure you'll find good use for it!
Great stuff 👏👏
Thanks Steve!!
If you are ever planning to expand this video.
I would like to learn more about the notification commands and the clear notification.
PS: love the cannel
awesome. thank you
No, thank you for the comment and support!!
Thanks a lot!
Thanks Pavol!!
As always.. great video.. well presented and relevant topics. Just wish i'd waited a week before starting to work on my actionable notifications to save me banging my head on the table when thigns weren't quite to plan..
Damn I was just a little too late!! Or you are too quick for me!
@@EverythingSmartHome obviously the latter.. :-)
Another great video. How are you getting your camera feed to go live so fast? I use Unifi Protect integration and it takes about 15-20 seconds or the live video to show up.
I've seen other video's like this and they helped get me to .75 % of the way to doing this. But I have to say, after watching a few of your video and finally stumbling on to this one I'm very impressed. I am a techie type of person also, but for some reason I just have a block somewhere in my head that doesn't get to finishing stuff like this so your help videos are the best. Question: In your video the notification expands (appears to) automatically or are you pausing the video and expending the notification to show ? Any way, you make the best tutorials I've seen yet, keep it up and thank you.
Thanks Archie, glad you find it useful! Yes I am dragging my finger on them to open them, it's just not apparent from the screen recording
This video is super helpful! Is there a way to choose between multiple custom actions? Basically, selecting the custom action just causes the automation to continue, but I would like to have multiple custom options that would involve listening for their identifiers.
Just add more custom actions to this 'Wait for trigger' block, and create unique trigger ID's for them (e.g. 'action1', 'action2') (it's under the three dots menu). Then instead of adding your actions directly below, add a 'Choose' block with template condition {{ wait.trigger.id == 'action1' }} for action 1, etc. It will choose the correct option based on the trigger ID from that action.
The new screens looks different now, but still works, just automated my Reolink PoE DoorBell! :) Thanks!
Good video indeed. Do you have a nice experience with the reolink doorbell? Im just in doubt to buy it. Do you also have the bonus feature implementer? With the live feed of the camera. And are you using an android or ios phone?
I just want that live feed in an android noyification but get that not working yet
One cool best feature I just found: You can use emojis from your IOS and Android device's emoji keyboard to paste them into Notifications! Looks really good.
Verny nice tutorial! Simple and clear like best teacher. Congratulations! Good to know, that presented solution does not working on the Android 13 (Samsung Galaxy). Will tested on latest iOS version. Push notifications and additional actions working fine, no any image in pop-up message. UPDATE: it working when snapshot is placed "www" folder and as absolute url (...). Otherwise authentication string is required. Thanks a lot!
really help full video,,,,,would love to see this done in node red :)
fyi you can do the wait for trigger in a separate automation if you don't want it sitting there waiting and want it to continue for other reasons
Hey, great vid as usual !
I wonder if it's possible not to open HA when taping on a notification. I'm sending a time out notification to my daughter's iPad and taping it brings up HA.
Nice video!!!!
Nice comment!! 😅
@@EverythingSmartHome 😅
Thanks for the great video again. Spent the last 4 hours with your first video and then this video trying to get it to work on my iphone. I get the image intermittently (but only as a small image at the side of the message) and no buttons at all. Seems like they have changed something again. 6 weeks seems to be a very long time in HA terms.
Thanks! You have to press and hold the notification to open it on iPhone, did you try that?
@@EverythingSmartHome I did - that wasn't the issue. For some reason the yaml 'code' wasn't interpreted at all. I had to open automation.yaml and add it there in order for it to work. But now it does. Thanks a lot for your work!
Have you tried to mount an SMB/NFS share from TrueNAS to Home Assistant? I have been messing around with it but can't get it to work. This would be from home assistant blue in my case. I realize you probably run HA in a VM or container natively but maybe you can cover it. Use case is for the frigate addon and also a rather larger media collection MP3's etc. Thanks for all the great content!
This is very helpful! What cameras are everyone using that work so well in Home Assistant? I have some Blink cameras and it does not appear that I can get a live feed like this. Thoughts?
Super!!
Thanks Christian!
Like always, your videos are simple explanations on how to do the MOST COOL stuff with HA. I'm now trying to find something to automate my doorbell. Is there any way to make our doorbell ring on HA and enable us to answer it in there? I'm looking for that but i can't find a way. I already tried with VoIP but ran on some walls and couldn't do it. Do you have any idea?
Thank you Lewis for the video. I have an android phone running the assistent. How do I access the interface you use in your videos?
Sorry for the noob question 😅
Hi nice toturial, do you know why or how can I make the button decision to appear without holding down the notification?
Hi, Very good tutorial, thank you.
Is it possible to send video files (a camera recording for example) with android notifications?
Is it possible to get the camera feed of a specific camera to open instead of the tab where you might have several cameras? Awsome video btw!
Is there an option to attach the latest motion clip (from frigate) to the message? to open the clip as an action?
Also, is it possible to make the notifications persistent? it's so easy to remove them by accident from android notifications. Thanks!! (great content!)
Hi! I was happy to find this video, another cool one from you which is so well explained. Just what I was looking for, and I didn't expect it to be this easy!
I was wondering...Is 'Displaying camera feed in notification' with Android phones already possible, as far as you know?
Thanks a lot for your quick feedback, I can enrich a lot of my automations now :-)
Thanks! No unfortunately not supported on Android yet, only iOS
@@EverythingSmartHome That is very unfortunate indeed :( Thanks for the reply 👌
@@EverythingSmartHome Hey! Still not supported?
Do you have previous programming knowledge? Degree in computer science etc or did you just have to teach yourself all this, I had no idea you could do this with hassio! Just looking at all the trigger stuff gives me anxiety; Your vids are always really easy to follow x
No real previous programming knowledge but I'm just a very technical person by nature and very good at problem solving, I work full-time as a technical engineer also which definetely helps! But yes just self taught haha! Thank you for your very kind words and support, appreciate it! 🙏
Hi, there is a way to add custom sound to android notifications? Thank you!
Is there a reason that you do a weight trigger to listen for the action event instead of simply setting it up an automation that listens for that action separate? Thinking of how I would use this, I would have to load up a bunch of triggers and all the places I would use it when if I just had the automation separate, sounds easier to pull off, but I wasn't sure if you did it the way you did it for a reason .
Can you explain how to perform 2 operations when both external operations (not URI) assume that CHOSE should be used
Great video, very informational. Has anyone configured an actionable notification with the option to send Google TTS to Sonos speakers by typing in a message in the notification box from an iPhone. There are a load of videos out there, but some very out of date and don't work correctly.
Thanks buddy! Can't say I've ever tried that sorry
Hi, great video! just one question- Do you also know how to do critical +actionable notification? I am trying to do something like I must attend to the notification but also it contained actionable button
Thanks! Good question - not actually tried because I don't use iOS, but hop into the discord and I'm sure someone can help you out!
Thank you thats why I'm getting "The 'push' option is deprecated" in my HA logs
So creating an actionable notification with one button works as per your great video.
However I want to make it with two actionable buttons like this: first button to "Turn-off the lights"; second button to "Turn off the light AND Enable the alarm". How do I make this with 2 separate Event triggers, each having its own associated Actions? This I cannot figure out.
2 auto' - 1 with the notifacathion and 2 with 2 or 3 event as triger
Thanks for the great video. In iOS, how are you able to tap the notification & it expands the preview images? Mine calls the action to open the dashboard when I tap it. I have to pull down to expand the notification.
Thanks! I'm not an iOS user so borrowed my partner's phone for this but I think you press and hold
Great video as always ;)
I have a question: If I want to open a lovelace card tapping on notification? There is a way to do it?
You can open to a Lovelace dashboard as shown in this video but I'm not sure what you mean by opening a card?
@@EverythingSmartHome I mean a lovalace dashboard. But instead tapping on "action" like in the video, I want to tap on the notification and open the app in a specific dashboard
Like a WhatsApp notification: if I tap on it I can open the app in a specific chat
Yes you can do that I'm pretty sure, check the home assistant companion app docs
Hi Lewis! Nice tutorial. I wonder if it's possible to add multiple custom action buttons into a notification and if it's possible, how can we do that?
Sure you can do that, just add another in the automation!
@@EverythingSmartHome I couldn't make it work, because if I don't click the first button, it waits for that trigger forever. It can't move on to the next wait for trigger action, so I can't use this button. I can only use one custom action button in a single notification.
Thank you for the video! As others mentioned, is there a way to have multiple action buttons? In my case, I want to either open the door or open the garage door. I can't find a way to do that. Same as others, I just can't pair the "Wait for" with the other actions.
2 auto' - 1 with the notifacathion and 2 with 2 or 3 event as triger
I'm not very good with automations. However based on your video i was able to get it going (message) on my first go. I have it sending an automation that my Side gate was opened. What would I need to do to send a notification if it was still open after 'x' minutes? Thanks
I used to use Prowl. I know there is way to call Prowl with an addition to config.yaml in HA, but I'd rather just use HA ios notifications. But I miss not being able to see all the previous notifications easily (like Prowl). Is there an easy way to set up HA to see all the recent notifications in the same way? thanks ..edit... Don't worry I worked out how to integrate and use Prowl within HA.. gone back to that.. All good 😀
What android version you need for the image to be open big
Hi Lewis, do you mind sharing your frigate automation for iOS/Android notification video/pics?
Hello! Which one sorry? From this video?
Great video! Is there the ability using a similar method to snooze getting such notifications for a specified time?
Thanks! Sure you should be able to do a wait_for combined with a delay I guess!
@@EverythingSmartHome aha interesting. I’ll see what I can figure out. Thanks!
Where can we find the YAML to follow along would be much easier?
This world is a better place today. Home Assistant rocks my world. YES YES YES - Time to go automate the world.
Enjoy!
Is there a way to make your phone sound an alarm (high volume, even on silent) if for say you are away from home and it gets broken into. That for me is most important. With Smart things literally slept through my house being broken into (I was staying at a friends 'away') because SmartThings only provides a basic notification, like a text sound or email. I had a large companies security system and any time my alarm system went off my phone would go off like a nuclear silo warning! ... couldn't miss it!
Cool update. Can you do one for EzViz cameras?
Thanks! What do you mean sorry?
@@EverythingSmartHome The EzViz Cameras, they are a bit tricky to setup in home assistant and harder for this notifications. But I'll try it again.
Great video. Is it possible to get that live feed notification working on an android phone? I don't get that working yet
Hi
I made the notification part in Node-RED and notifications are showing up on both iOS and Android. When clicking the action button, it's only the Android Phone events that are being returned to Home Assistant (using the listener for events of type: mobile_app_notification_action). Have you (or any other) experienced that before?
Thanks in advance for help :)
I wanted to change the color os the notification on the android.
The same color for everything doesnt suite right...
In case of alarm or leak or something like that, I wanted to get a Red notification in order to get the proper attention
I've been stuck on how to make the 3 available actionable for an android device work. Seems I can only make one fire. I setup 3 but only 1 works. Of you can share an automation or script that would be great
Hey Lewis, hello everyone :)
i was wondering if I could open my door (nuke smart lock 2.0 + bridge) with that? The idea is when I am arriving at home I'll get a push notification with a button like e.g. "Open Door". By clicking this button the door should open.
I know I could use autounlock within the nuki app, but this isn't working for me reliable. So, is this possible? If yes, how does the code has to look like in the "Data" Area of the action in my automation? Or does it have to be via a webhook or something?
Thanks.
This is awesome, but im stuck. im working on the "wait for a trigger" action. Trigger type is event, event type is mobile_app_notification_action. Then the event data i have actionName: actionfromabove.
i copied/pasted the action from the notification data. i get the notification, with the buttons, but when i click on the button, nothing happens, it just dismisses that notification, seeming like its doing something, but the action that follows never happens. do i have the event type incorrect?
My HA set up is local only with no external access. Will it still notify me if I’m outside of my home? Or do notifications only work when I’m at home?
Behavior on my Android phone is different. I have to open the Notifications to see them all listed, then open the specific Notification, then open the image if I want to see it. Also, the device_id: camera.doorbell method is still not there in Android I guess!
2 years later and no live camera feed in android :(
For iOS, when the notification pops up, do you have to long press to get the action button to pop up?
Is there a way to make the action open an app that is installed on the phone using the com.appname
Hi , nice video.
I'm trying to apply to my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 but any attached data is showed in the notification bar. Is necessary an specific android version for working ok? Mine its on Android 10 release.
Hello, I'm not sure what you mean sorry!
@@EverythingSmartHome yes, i can´t see any picture or video in my notification, just text. using android app in Note 20 (andorid 11)
Geeeeniiuuuuusssss
Hi and thanks for all your videos! I am under 2021.5.4 (ha and ios app) but I can't see anyx attachment... neither image: nor actions, my iphone app onyl shows me the card with the notif (title & msg) but no image not button/actions... What could I do wrong ? thx
Are you pressing and holding the notification to reveal the extra info?
@@EverythingSmartHome i am so 🤬😶🌫️👹, i was just clicking the notif.... thx for your help and your work
is there a way to push notification on android auto ?
It's now also possible to remove a notification, right? Do you know if this is also available via node red?
I'm not actually sure sorry!
Has anyone figured out how to add a 2nd notification with with a variety of actions just like the first. For example, open garage door that you can close and for the 2nd one acknowledge the door being open and send a message to others in the household. I tried using it independently but only the first notification action would work. I switched it up to a choose function and that would not work either. Thanks in advance!
It should work no problem, I don't think it should be any different to the first notification?
@@EverythingSmartHome thank you for replying. That’s awesome! I tried on a variety of devices (android and iPad) and changed how I structure the UI automations yet the second command would never work. Might be that I don’t know how to link the condition of a chose option with the wait for trigger action. Could you maybe point me in the right direction or maybe think about a video using a bit more complex automation set like Actionable Notifications PT 2? Thank you so much! Been on this for days!!!!!
My iPhone shows "missing title" first & then the actionable button. But only pushing "missing title" has function. Sorry for my english.
I am having problems remote accessing my /media folder. I have remote access to HA via Nabu Casa and through a domain via Nginx Proxy Manager. I thought i probly have NPM set up wrong but I still thought the files would get through Nabu Casa. Any ideas why I can't sent mp3 files to Google Home or as in this video I can't send jpg or videos to my HA app on my phone?
Make sure to check your NGINX error logs
I have followed these instructions to the letter but I do not get a button with the notification, I just receive the notification (title and message) so cannot click to return the event data to HA. I assume something changed in HA since this video was made such that some syntax is keeping the action button from being sent but I cannot see what it is. Any thoughts? (Thanks in advance!)
same here... but you have to press and hold on the notification and you should then get a button, it work then. the button doesn't show up automatically which it really should... is there a way to make it show up without pressing and holding the notification?
For me (Android in 2023), I have to click on the "drop down" arrow in the notification to see the buttons.
Hi love this video, do you see a large popup on an android phone? I receive a sound notification but no popup at all. on 3 different android devices. I can see it is from HA the title matches with what I entered in the automation. I can see the invisible notificatinf when I swipe dor with a timy thumbnail of the snap.
All notifications are enabled A
I'm also having problems - possibly some changes in HA in last year - I guess....
@@davidtjac I got the small popup working now. You need to go in apps settings for HA and then enable the notifications goto the notification category "general' and there enable what you need
Thanks for your videos. They are great. Could you speak a little bit slower?
Good Video! (I am from Germany - sorry for my english 😊)
I am searching, how I can integrate my IP Cams on HomeAssistant. I installed MQTT but there is no Button for „camera“ or some picture. Is there anothet tutorial? Thanks a lot!
Hello and thanks - the easiest way is to use a camera that supports RTSP or ONVIF
@@EverythingSmartHome Is there a Video about that / how to do? Thanks a lot for answer!
I'm following for some weeks now. Seems we have the same schedule :-). Thanks for this one. I tried this but I'm stuck a little bit. Whenever I open the actionable notification I don't see the actions defined but only "Loading actions" ("Aktionen werden geladen..." in german). Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help?
Hmm that is indeed strange I've never seen that before! Are you using HTTPS on your server with a proper certificate?
@@EverythingSmartHome Yes, Https and a valid cert. It worked well with the recent push category approach.
Hmm that's really weird! Never seen that before. If your able to join the discord server we might be able to try help you figure it out
@@EverythingSmartHome It seems that restarting my device did the trick. Good old reboot :). Thanks a lot anyway and see you in your next video 👍
I cant seem to get the action for disarm alarm to disarm the alarm, it seems to stop at the wait for trigger element
