I spent decades metal working. As youbform metal, in your case Unistrut, the metal crystals turn columnar, which is commonly called worked hardened. Centre punch well, use a really sharp HSS drill bit and lube. On Stsinless which is very hard Cobalt bits are good. You could try them. Although Sikaflex and other industrial adhesive sealants are very strong, an awning us subject to strong wind, I would always use a mechanical fixing wherever possible. Another great video.
Right this should be interesting Mel. I did I similar awning on a VW Transporter.. on the first trip I left the awning on and drove out.. on the dual carriageway @ 50MPH out the mirror I saw the awning slip out.. so I drilled a bigger screw through the rail and fitted 2 leather straps to The bodywork so I could tie up the awning to the roof rack.. lasted years.. PS the awning I used was a fiamma caravan store type
Looks like it is wise to pre-drill a small whole in these heavy bars before using selv tapping screws. Nice to see you are not ashamed to let us see the failures too and not only the succes! Tnx Mel🤘🏻
So looking at the vid i see you are standing on the ladder at the left side of your drill... there goes no weight of you body through the ooint og your drill... your right shoulder should be in a straight line with the drill ... like shooting a rifle...
Mel having worked with unistrut you need a very sharp(new) drill bit, those self tap self drill can let you down I've found pilot hole works wonders.yes sometimes the easiest jobs can be a real pain.
Hi Mel, I have exactly the same awning rail on my van but I used the small stainless steel self drilling screws and fastened it to the van. Only one thing I found with this is the channel is for 8mm beading and my awning is 6mm beading. The fix is fit a drive away piece that is 8mm on one side to 6mm on other or a large pair of water pump pliers to squeeze the channel slightly. I will let you guess which option I went for. 👍😎😁

I thought it was the complete awning that you were fitting Mel. Those Fiamma rails are £600. I'm looking at buying a Sheltapod awning, no rail required for that. I assembled my pull out bed today with the help from your previous video, but I thought you only put a washer on the pull out slats, then I realised it's every slat. It works now cheers. :)
@@markemarkpsv1 Sometimes because of frames per second or just the illusion of opposite spin occurs naturally because of ( The Wagon Wheel Effect ) At the very beginning when the drill is going much slower, it appears to be spinning in the correct anti clockwise direction when looking straight at the drill. Uni strut is very hard and those screws with drill heads are designed for lighter softer material. The drill bit he broke may have been blunt so he forced it somewhat. That's my observation and thoughts. I recon we should open an inquiry though lol 🤣😂🤣
I fitted the same thing, was a pain in the butt. Looking to buy a Flamma roller awing but lordy they are expensive. I found with this rail the awning would slide in it.
Got the same rail, had the same problem, the screws are soft metal, I had to go to screwfix and buy a box of self tappers. I must admit i had a sly laugh when you were trying to screw it on lol.
I’m guessing they’re probably stainless steel screws which are designed to be self tapped into a suitably sized pilot hole. Nothing to do with quality, stainless just has a low shear point.
Orbix/ tech screws are the dogs danglies so I think you were at the wrong angle and the driver seemed to be going flat? They really do munch into metal work with ease 👍🇬🇧👊

Mel ,, The self tapping screws are chinese rubish , Go to the hardware shop and buy a 25 pack of TECK brand srews they go thru uni strut like a lazer beam ( Ask Austin powers ) "LAZER BEAM" , I would use the Philips head #2 size ,, I tell ya you could lift your sprinter off the ground with the propper TECK SCREW brand screws , I have drilld thru 1/4 inch plate on my welding table with them ot hold my work lite from falling over all the time ,,,,, Oh that van is looking 100% buddy ! No I wouldn’t recommend that you use tiger seal or sikathere I would definitely use nuts and bolts there are already holes in the roof there covered up buy little plastic caps good luck

oh man themself tappers that come with them rails are so crap I feel your pain , id try some posh drill bits cos unistrut is hard as nails but I thing you defo need some screw in it
Them self drill screws aren't all that ,an unistrut is a decent bit of gear , so you should drill a pilot hole , a industrial hoover or a couple of super magnets takes care of the swarf ps don't forget to paint the holes , you dont want any rust ,nice kitout oi yor van

Oh NO! If that glue works holding that awning while screaming down the free-way, I'll EAT IT! If the screws don't work, I hope you drilled enough holes so the glue penetrates the holes and goes hard, like a nail / screw.

Bunnings mate, C section sail track 3 metres for $20. Pop riveted it to square section ali tube on my Dmax. Job done!

Wrong fixings for unistrut Mel,drill a pilot hole first and they might go in,you need heavy steel tek fixings to go through without a pilot,good luck.

Oh NO! If that glue works holding that awning while screaming down the free-way, I'll EAT IT! If the screws don't work, I hope you drilled enough holes so the glue penetrates the holes and goes hard, like a nail / screw.
