How to Flatten Wood with Linear Rail Router Sled

- I wanted to share how I use my linear rail router sled. So I've made a new video about how to flatten the wood. From chopping boards to wood slabs.
1.walnut 320x1820x22mm
2.walnut 350x2220x38mm
3.wood slab 878/750x2005x52mm
4.chopping boards 220x360x25mm
Please enjoy this video! - Хобби
YES! Finally someone who using this sled a cutting WITH the grain instead of across it. Has to make for an easier job of finish sanding.
Love the design. I'll definitely be making one of these. I really like the cradle the router sits in compared to others I've seen.
Thank you so much!!!!!!
I looked at many designs and your is the best, I bought 4 linear rails. I’m going to use this to mill a hunk of aluminum flat
I appreciate your comment. I hope everything is going well with you.
Excellent video direct and to the point
Thank you so much!
Nice set up! Looking to make something similar and this was helpful. Thanks for sharing
I hope you can have a great jig.
Great explanations!
Thank you for your comment. I think that's not enough explanations though.
@@makefurniture1 To me it seems just right. Thank you for your effort!
This looks amazing! Bravo!
I got the same rails but I keep getting uneven ends. I think my workbench surface is is out of level, on end may be higher than the other.
I saw that you used 5mm shims under the longer linear rails. I think I may try this tomorrow to see if I can get both sides parallel to each other.
Thank you so much!! I hope you will fix it soon.
Wow super ,sehr schönes Holz, sehr gute Arbeit. 👍
Danke sehr!
This is so great! Thank you so much. I will be making a table using timber burls and resin soon and this looks like a great way to set up the rail sled. My table will be 1100mm wide and 1800mm long. Do you think having cross rails of 1400 will be long enough to allow the sled to reach the edges?
My cross rails are 1200mm. I have flattened the 878mm width of the slab in this video.
I think so it is enough. If the sled doesn't reach the edges, there are two ways. You can move either your slab or setup like this video.
@@makefurniture1 thank you so much!!!! I really appreciate your help.
Great system... Congrats... I just put together something similar, using SBR20 rails and blocks. I noticed you're only using a single screw per block, which seems like the only way to go w/ SBR20s. (Blocks are 35mm, and rail screw holes 30mm apart). I was thinking of just putting the top rails on a 3/4" platform, and screwing each platform to the lower rail blocks, and the upper rails screwed into the platform from above. However, it looks like you have no issue with just the single screw per block. Have you seen any wobble or support issues doing it that way?
You have a keen eye. Yeah, I am using only one screw per block. Because I had to use existing holes. Actually, there is another chance to screw one more on the aluminum support of the rail if you can make a new hole on that. But I think the single screw is strong enough to hold the block and of course, I have no issue with that until now. And I have not experienced any flex, wobble, or support issues using this setup by this time. Thanks.
Hey, looking at the ends of the rails I can see a big movement there you might want to consider putting screws in on the ends or using clamps. Thanks for the vid!
I will think about it. Thanks!
@@makefurniture1 it doesn't matter, right? You're cutting height not square. Whether or not your rails are skewed doesn't change the bit's height so the rails don't need to be pinned down.
great router sled however i have a question. i am working on a 5' x 10' boardroom table and would need to build the sled large enough to do this job. figuring on using the 2000mm to span the width of the table. have you done any this long? did you notice any sagging in the middle due to the weight of the router?
I'm using 1850mm(the long ones)and 1200mm(the short ones). I haven't experienced any issues like sagging, flexing for my router until now. My linear rails are SBR20. It means that the diameter of the rail is 20mm. 2000mm for the short ones is quite long. I'm not sure they can stand without any sagging.
Hardnox(a logo of cowboy) ordered 1800 and 4000mm two months ago.
Please see the below comments.
Why don't you ask him? Thanks.
Definitely, I'll follow your set-up, so I can make one for myself. Please let me know brand and length of rails. Thanks.

any tips for shimming and removing the least amount of wood possible?
This looks great I'm trying to build something similar, could you provide some more info on how you made the carriage for the router?
Thank you again for the wonderful video!

This is the video on how to build a cradle for the router. That's not the same cradle in this video but the same way to make them. Thanks!
@@makefurniture1 Hey just wanted to say thank you for all of your help, my cradle and sled came out great.
@@feraligatrs That sounds great!
Hi, looks great and easy to install as long you have a flat surface. What’s the size of shaft you are using on the rail? Thanks
These are called SBR20. It means 20mm in diameter. Thanks!
I'm trying to do something similar. In the video it looks like you don't have the long rails secured to the table, is that right? Any issues with the short rails racking or did your cradle stiffen it up enough? Any closeups of the router cradle?
Usually, I use the long rails without clamps. But in some situations I use them. My cradle is made of 12mm birch plywood. There aren't any problems with using this sled for now.
If you want some closeups just give me an email, I'll take pictures and send them. acgari1@gmail.com
Very nice videos you make, thank you. Can I ask you at what RPMs you set your router and what’s the depth of the bit each time you pass it over the entire piece of wood? Also, can you recommend a nice big router bit for this purpose? Thanks a lot in advance.
The RPM depends on the material and the operating conditions(the diameter of the bit etc.) My router, GOF 1600 CE has 6-speed steps. 1 is low and 6 is high speed. And my bit's diameter is about 32mms. I usually set it at 2~3. It would be best if you did testing before the operation. The depth of the bit is the same as RPM.
I wanted to buy a FREUD Solid wood surfacing bit but it's too expensive.

This is the same as mine. I bought it for 67 dollars 2 years ago!! So cheap!
I think Carbide Inserts type is better. Thanks!
Thank you very much for your response and once again for your videos. Brest regards.
Do you have any videos on how to use that jet lathe in the background?
Unfortunately, I don't. Sorry for that.
What do you do if you're working on a very thick piece that requires more height between the router and the workbench? Love the idea!
You have the solution if you see the point at 7:41 in this video.
You just put plywood or 1x , 2x lumbers under the rails.
@@makefurniture1 sorry, yes, I watched the entire video later on yesterday and noticed my question was answered. Thank you for still responding! Final question - what did you do to make your work top flat for where the boards rest?
@@rickhickman2730 When building my work bench I took the time to meticulously level the base under the bench top using several leveling techniques such as shims and planing. And I used 30mm birch plywood as the bench top because it is quite stable.
How can I get the rails to set this up? Do you have a plan for sale? Wow nicest setup I've ever seen! Must cost a fotune too! Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful work ...

I got the rails and bearings from this seller. I don't sell any jigs. You can find them on aliexpress.com or amazon.com. Just type SBR20 on these sites. I think aliexpress.com is cheaper than amazon. Thanks.
I've noticed a lot of friction with my wooden router sled jig, your linear rails slide very smoothly yet I fear these rails cost more than that $300 Bosch router you have there (I have an EVS1617 too, very heavy router).
Approximately how much would those rails cost along with the sliding things ?

Hi love the sled am doing the same set up - do you recall what are the screws you used that go into the bearing blocks? Size/type and length...much thanks
I used Hex Socket Cap Head Screw Bolt, M6(15mm length, 1mm pitch).
I think you can use from 12~16mm M6 any bolts(1mm pitch).
@@makefurniture1 Thank you so much for the quick reply. I'm going to be using a Triton 3.25 hp router over a 1200mm span sitting on a 2200mm bottom rail (4' x 8' table). I think using the SBR25 for the top rail will eliminate any flex over that long of a span...
@@barryinny That's a good idea.
Love this setup. I have to ask: are just one screw per rail bearing enough to keep it square and straight? Or isn’t more screws necessary because it keeps itself straight by the four bearings?
In my case, I have been using only one screw. Thanks!
how did you know where to drill the holes through the plywood to the bearing blocks?
First, measure the distances between the holes on the bearing blocks. Then draw the middle points of the holes on the plywood. And drill the holes. That's all.
Do the long rails get attached to the workbench at all? How do they keep from moving when you're using the router?
Well, I have not been using anything to hold the long rails until now. Because they are heavy enough to eliminate any moving. But if there are any reasons, you can use clamps or screws.
Thanks for the reply! Keep up the videos.
Zero sound on most of the video. Like the jig, do you share where you got the materials from at all? Thanks

Thank you for sharing. Great information. I ordered these rails. The long ones are 4000mm and 1800mm for the short ones. I was wondering if there are issues with dust collecting in the bearings. Have you had any issues?
Wow, 4000 and 1800mm! Great, you must be a professional.
I use an air gun for the cleaning of the bearing sometimes. I have not had any issues while using this setup until now. If you worry about dust you can use the block bearings with dust covers.
Where did you bye them?
@@morteno5775Sorry, I don't remember. I searched everywhere for the 4000mm (10'). The company was in California. They took a few months to get. Two piece rails might work but I was concerned about a slight misalignment resulting in a bump. The two piece rails are cheaper and are available on Amazon.
Hello Where could I learn more or order parts to build one of these tracks? Thanks Dave

How many feet wide can you span with those SBR20 rails before they start to sag?
It depends on the situation. In my case, until 34 inches is okay.
Fantastic :) Is it necessary using SBR20 or will SBR12 be strong and stable enough? Best regards Åge from Norway
I am not sure but I think SBR12 would not be stable enough. Thanks.
@@makefurniture1 thanks👍
Looks great! Is there any flex in the rails at all?
I don't feel any flex during my job for now. I use SBR20. It means 20mm diameter of the rail. I think it is strong enough for my router.

Awesome thanks! Been thinking of making a similar sled, but on some U-Groove wheels on steel pipes.
I have the same router, and want to make a sled like this. Can you share the dimensions of the cradle and the size of the linear rails that you used?
Block bearing is 48*50*38mm. And the plywood I used is 12mm. So, my cradle is 300(60:48+12, 180:router's base, 60:48+12)*200*50(38+12)mm. If I had your email address I could send my cradle photo with the dimensions to you.
SBR 20 : 1850mm, 2pcs
SBR 20 : 1200mm, 2pcs
SBR 20UU : 8pcs
Thanks!
I have the same hardware and router you are using, what are the dimensions of the cradle you router rides on?
Mine is 200x294mm, 12mm birch plywood. 294 was a little bit short. That's why I had to carve one side for the dust collector. (3:47~3:49) So, it should be 200x310mm.
Could you please provide the specific information on the equipment you used - rails, bearings, I’ve searched through your information but do not find any links.

Nice setup for flattening slabs. I noticed you did not secure the rails or the work to the bench. Have the rails or the work ever moved during a cut and if not what keeps them from moving? I would be concerned the weight of the slab alone is not enough.
Your jig for holding the cutting board slabs is excellent. No tools needed to secure the work in the jig, just some wedges.
I have not failed to secure the work during a cut until now. It is important to secure the work for flattening slabs like a lightweight. That's why I used CA glue on the no.1 slab.
And the no.2,3 are enough heavy without any wedges or CA. Thank you.
@@makefurniture1 Ok, thanks, I did not see you use the CA glue. Good idea, I will try that.
Is it very smooth ? Can we use it to engrave fine detail ?
Yes, it is. I think it's possible. Thanks!
Great job mate. Is it good enough for a glue joint?
I think so. Thanks.
@@makefurniture1 Thank you!
Ficou muito bom show de bola 👌
Hi, thanks for sharing. I'm building the same setup than you. Just too bad that you can't put two screws on the block to fix the rail. Just, I was wondering, at the end of the video with the wooden box. We see the rail bending when you move the router. Those it affect the flatness of the piece?
The plywood(on the table saw) was not flat when you see the rail bending. But those chopping boards were small that they were flattened. My workbench(next to dark plywood) is almost flat so there is no bending. If you don't have a flat workbench you need to prepare flat lumber that is used as a base of the rail.
@@makefurniture1 Thanks for the reply. Hope to see more videos from you :)
