Growing up on a farm we always had a steel pipe that we applied downward pressure with when using the tractor bit.

i cut up some 2-3/8 drill pipe and used short sections of 2-7/8 drill pipe as collars. you can buy the pipe by the stick (30') at Mccoys or you can do like i did and find a local vendor on facebook who delivers.
