  • Drilling a well with hand auger, with 200mm diameter.
I determined the spot for drilling, by watching the property and seeing where the plants seemed to grow fastest, and remained green even during dry months. I also looked up old maps, and found out that a stream was flowing in this spot, before it was redirected sometime in 19th century. My thinking was that water would be still flowing underground.
Wells in my village are in general 3-6m deep, so I expected to hit water aproximately in this depth.

Hello j.j. my name is Jim , I was brought up on a farm in Dorset England , we had to have many scills ! I made my auger 4.5 inches diameter and bored my well by hand too , about 16 feet deep , very satisfying to have natural water !!
All the best , Jim (what country are you in?)

Hello there and thanks! Well the water is definetly clean enough to water the garden with, there are no other villages above mine (we live almost at the top of the ridge).
I haven´t get any tests done yet, becouse I am still in the process of drilling deeper. Therefore I don´t know if it is safe to drink. Other peoples wells near mine are usually ok to drink, so fingers crossed. I plan to do pt. 2 where I will install piping, pump and get test done so we will see.

How did you make the auger engage w/ the drill rod when drilling and disengage when removing the auger?

    • @JJChWorkshop
      @JJChWorkshop  10 месяцев назад

The auger has rectangular opening, which allows it slide up and down on the drilling rod, but when you rotate (=drill) it stays in place. It won´t slide down completely, becouse the drilling teeth and on the drilling end of the rod, prevent it from doing so.
The rectangular shape of the rod and the auger hole can be seen very well at 6:54

@jjchwotkshop. Great video. I am drilling a similar well with a similar tool. I got down 10ftand hit lots of gravel The drilling has now become incredible slow. Any thoughts ?!?

Thanks, it helps to use some kind of metal pipe with sharp end (I used grinder to sharpen mine) to loosen and crush the stones between the drilling

Thanks. Still making progress buts its very slow. At 14 ft. The rope gets stuck a lot when I’m pulling the bit up and the very end of the pole is stuck in the bottom but I’m still able to drilll.

I hit water at 15 feet but then the auger got stuck to the drenched soil . I have done everything to pull it out and it's not bulging.... Any suggestions please?😢 My hand auger is like the clam type😮

This happened to mě as well, it has an easy fix though.
Get one of those chain pulleys (the kind of a pulley car mechanists use to pull engines out of cars). Than make a simple tripod over the well, hang the pulley on the tripod and attach the chain to the drill handle. Using the chain pulley will make it easy the to pull the drill out few inches, which will unstuck it and you can pull it out normally.

Hey thank you so much . This morning I tried a come along ratchet and used a crowbar over a ladder as a base , but the ladder started to bend. It's that bad. I didn't want to buy or build a tripod but it is what it is...also please what is the name of the steel pipe you used with the backflow valve?

I found bunch of old tools, some documents and money from 1920s and also Third Reich money from the 1940s. World war 2 newspapers are especially interesting to read nowdays, while having the hindsight.
Unfortunately no gold bars, or chests full of treasures. There are still parts of the house unexplored, so who knows :)

there are several solutions - make a drill head with a valve, use a pump to remove water between rounds of drilling etc., watch part 2
