  • A Qantas jumbo jet has made history, landing at a regional airport in New South Wales to become the first 747-400 in the world to go on public display.
The City of Canberra was retired to Wollongong after 25 years of service and will become a prized addition to an aviation museum based at Illawarra Regional Airport.
Qantas is gifting VH-OJA City of Canberra, which flew non-stop from London to Sydney for its delivery flight in 1989, to HARS (the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society) to go on display at Illawarra Regional Airport near Wollongong.
The flight number was QF7474 and the arrival time was 7:47am.

My first flight on a Qantas 747 was in 1988 Melbourne to Honolulu. I was a teenager flying alone. It was a big deal for me. Great memories 🇦🇺

I cried for such a long time. I had the honour of flying on the first 747 out of Australia. Since then, I would only fly on this majestic plane. When it left Australia for the last time, my heart broke. It took me away the first time & years later, it brought me back home, never to leave Australia again. It took me all around the world. It has taken so many memories with it now, although they stay with me, but now include it's final flight. The 747 is much more than a plane, it is a friend & it feels like that friend has just died. QANTAS 747, I will carry you in my heart forever!! Really, what in the world were they thinking in retiring the queen of the sky??
I just can't get my head around such a horrible thought & such a heartbreaking act. Who was the person who said "yes" to this terrible decision? Please change your mind, QANTAS. Please bring our 747 back home to Australia. Please!! 😨 😥 😭 🙇 🙏🙏🙏 ✈ ✈ ✈ ✈ ✈ ✈ ✈

I agree with you. My heart is still aching over her. How sad is it that New Zealand is doing everything in their power to bring back their 747’s home to not get scrapped and here in Aus they’ve just agreed to let her go…

    • @springbutGT
      @springbutGT 7 дней назад

They are not very fuel efficient. So it would not be smart to keep her in her fleet. Although, I do miss her, it’s Qantas choice. Also more engines would mean more pollution. So it is making global warming worse.

I first saw a 747 land at Sacramento in 1970. It was doing alternate airport practice for San Francisco. It looked too slow, due to it's size, more like a blimp. I flew on one 4 years later, TWA SFO to Lisbon via New York. What a magnificent airplane.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about this plane, or more correctly about one of the few engines remaining on it, is that the outer fan windmills, quite slowly, in the gentlest of breezes. Fabulous low friction bearings and balance of blades.

I used to live in Sydney. I used to work in a building in Gore hill. From time to time, I went to roof top to see airplane flying overhead. Boeing-747 is so different. It looks flying so slow. Once it is overhead, it is like a huge whale. The roar is incredibly loud. It is so exciting. One day, I will go back to Australia. I will go to Wollongong to visit Qantas's queen of the sky.

Sheer beauty. Goosebumps. I had a dream of flying in one of these beauties from the first time I saw one at Manchester Ringway (now Manchester Airport) back in the early 70s and my dream came true when my daughter, me and my late wife flew on a 747-400 Virgin Atlantic to Florida in 2005. I fear flying will be reserved for the super rich in the future. They won't give up their private jets and diesel guzzling super yachts.

Great video. They have now been phased out in favour of more economical aircraft, but the 747s have always had a class all of their own. They are majestic!
In November 2010, I flew on this aircraft from Auckland to Los Angeles. It was an overnight flight and next morning, just before breakfast, the Captain came on the intercom and told us that the Wallabies had beaten the All Blacks in Hong Kong.
A New Zealand passenger was heard to mutter that if the All Blacks had won we would never have heard about it...

At least I was lucky to have flown 747-400ER several times before its retirement. The most notable flight was the 23 hour flight from Frankfurt to Sydney via Singapore and Melbourne with Lufthansa; the day passed without noticing!!

One excellent reason to keep the 747-8 orders coming, dear Qantas, United, Delta, Singapore, British, Air France, KLM. Back by passenger & pilot demand.

Can you recreate the Qantas 747 landing at Wollongong airport also known to have Hars aviation museum?
