@@prgamer241 as a Kazakh, I'll give in a piece history before my verdict. Kazakhstan was originally a khanate, a country where a Khan ruled over the people. At some point, the Kazakh Khanate was absorbed into the Russian Empire for reasons yet unsure, whether it was that we could get absorbed so that the Chinese dynasties wouldn't get influence in the Kazakh territory or because the Kazakhs were having silent battles with the Russians, which resulted in the latter winning and taking territory. In the Russian Empire, Kazakhs along with other ethnic groups were sentenced to harsh conditions, especially when one of the Tsars had an advisor that set up an authority figure that would oppress anyone who was not Russian. After the Bolshevik revolution, Kazakhstan existed as an autonomy, known as Alash Autonomy, but it was shortlived for the Bolsheviks happened to gain influence over it. During Stalin's reign, the Kazakhs along with other ethnic groups were starved, in fact famished to the point where at least 50% of the Kazakh population in the Kazakh territory either died from starvation or moved away, one of the most brutal times for the Kazakhs. Prominent Kazakh people fighting the Soviet rule, such as Ilyas Zhansugurov, were arrested and often shot. In 1986, when things became calmer, Gorbachev replaced the leader of the Kazakh SSR, who was an ethnic Kazakh, with a Russian, which stirred a massive protest known as Jeltoqsan. Thousands participated, thousands got hurt, the whole situation was bloody. Despite the harsh history, after the Soviet union collapsed and Kazakhstan became independent, both Russia and Kazakhstan have made successful attempts to improve relations, and Russia's valued trade importer is Kazakhstan. This year, when a protest sparked after the gas prices went up and slowly stirred to where people began fighting for democracy, Russia helped Kazakhstan by deploying CSTO paratroopers into the country and silencing protests. Despite what a lot of foreigners believe, the Russians did leave the country after marking their missions as successful. So, overall, us Kazakhs had some turmoil with the Russians (or mostly the Russian government), and whilst I'm unsure whether Russia did test nuclear weapons in Northern territory of Kazakhstan, it is a fact that both countries have been in a stable relationship. I lived in Moscow for around 5 years, and whilst nobody really cared (or at least those who did came up to me and started spitting harmless Borat references), Russians, including the Russian politicians, have a lot of respect for the Kazakhs, and they were interested in our unique Turkic culture.
