A Cairngorms Adventure | Hiking and wild camping (Ben Macdui, Cairn Toul & Braeriach traverse)

- A 3 day wild camping and hiking adventure in the Cairngorms as Kevin, Stephen and I hike to Ben Macdui and wild camp below the summit of Carn Etchacan. We visit a developing snow tunnel. Next day we drop down into the Lairig Ghru and visit Corrour bothy then do the Cairn Toul to Braeriach traverse. Eventually wild camping in the Rothiemurchus forest. A tough but fun couple of days covering around 50km of distance.

Another great vlog Robin.
Happy St Patrick's Day!
Thanks George and to you too. 😁
Great video, looks like a great couple of days! I also think I used to work with your friend Stevie up in Orkney, small world.
Small world indeed mate. Stevie's started his own wee channel too under 'Oot n' Boots'.
Fantastic landscape. Did similar walk and camped at Loch Etchachan. Regards
It's great stomping ground isn't it. 👣
Thank you very much for posting this in my WH information request in the forums. It showed me a lot and gives me more confidence in my plans. Also very nicely made, it was a very enjoyable watch!
Cheers for dropping in with a comment mate. 😁 Enjoy your trip.
Robin great video viewpoints were amazing just magic
I want to visit the Cairngorms for a similar kind of adventure to you in the summer. Thanks for making and sharing the video
Cheers Ben and enjoy your trip. Its a fantastic place to explore.
That gadgie at the bothy prob filled up downstream of you and kev’s foot spa 😂 nice

Looked a brilliant trip, a real mountain adventure, thanks for sharing, brilliant.
Thanks Mark, think I speak for the 3 of us in saying it was a brilliant trip.
Another super, wee-ish adventure Robin and crew ! :-)
On the Adventure Trails - Scotland cheers, we all really enjoyed it. The Cairngorms are stunning!
Well done, loved the video. I did this route several years ago and was amazed and humbled by the scale - - -, brought back some wonderful memories. Thank you !
Thank you. 😊
It's a cracking area and like you say, the scale makes you feel rather small.
Another outstanding film Robin, takes me back in time to those magnificent Cairngorm mountains. Cheers ⛺️
Cheers Mike. 👍🏼
Great video mate. I really enjoyed watching this and I am looking forward to more in the future. Thanks for sharing. Atb Shaun
Cheers Shaun, glad you enjoyed it.
Brilliant video Rob. Cracking weekend 🖒😎
Kevin Russell cheers Kev.
Cracking vid I love that area brilliant place
Thanks Wayne, I love the Cairngorms too. Any plans to visit this year?
Just had another swatch through this mate , it was a cracking trip that one but a very tough day 2 .. I just remember how good it was to get pitched up that day because i was fooked lol
Loved this trip mate, hankering for another Cairngorms epic.
Day 2 was brutal. 😂
@@WalkWithWallace i'll be going back in at some point , i've still got a few munros to get
@@ootnboots I'll definitely be back, just to scratch the itch. 😁
Was looking at this route as we were up Macdui in earlier in the month. Another great film mate!
Thanks again Davie, I'd recommend the Faicaill Ridge route for some easy scrambling.
Great video Robin and a cracking weekend
Top trip mate, you've been in a few times now since then.
Awesome video Robin
cheers Stuart. :)
Good video - thanks. Nice filming and no BS.
Cheers Nigel.
@@WalkWithWallace You're welcome. Refreshing to see a video like that. No pretension or waffle, just good filming and helpful commentary.
Toilets at the bothy, nice but not keen on the side by side version mind. Looked a great trip and suprised at so much snow still about. Great watch! Cheers Alan
Alan METALMAN - Hiking & Outdoors cheers Alan. Yeah, I wouldn't want to share the twin toilets. Plenty snow but didn't need any crampons or axe.
👌👍
👍🏻 😁
Nice one guys, pity anybody filling their water bottles down below 🤑🤑
*edit. Just remember. Dipping our feet in the water. 😂
Fresh Cairngorm water and stinking feet 😉
@@Kev_Russ 😂😂
Nice wee outing mate. Planning to revisit that area in the spring/summer. Cheers
Spring is definitely the best time to go, it's a fantastic area. What's your plans, a few Munros too?
Walk With Wallace 👣 yeah I’d like to get up high. I’ve run the Lairig Ghru a couple of times, but I’d like to explore loch etcheachan, braeriach, maybe a wee summit camp. It’s such a powerful place, quite different to west coast mountains I’ve done.
Keep up the great videos mate, maybe see you out on the hills. Cheers.
@@NameisLeon I know exactly what you mean when you say powerful. It's difficult to explain how good the Cairngorms are. Love the place.
Nice one ser, second time watching this with a route in mind. Definitely helped me out! That plateau / tundra is absolutely fantastic, I think there’s a wee bit near there called the “lunar landscape” 😯👌🏻
Cheers mucker. It's fab up there. Nothing better than a day up on the plateaux. 🗻
@@WalkWithWallace Excellent to hear, I didn’t notice you saying about the Colin Prior spot the first time round - was still too feart of the Gorms thanks to Cairngorm John 😂
I’d been hoping to get a pitch where you were on your first night, so that’s ticked a box for me 👍 Very handy!
@@outlawedlandscapes 😅 looking forward to seeing your take on it mate. 👍🏼
Looks like a very good trip, did you visit the Wells of Dee? One of my favourite spots. Glad to see the stove still doing its job.
Gary Redspeedster we didn't, spotted them but by that point we were tiring. Total convert to the alcohol burning Speedster stove, as is Kevin now. 🔥
Hi Robin...great video and excellent editing skills, well done..ive just liked and subscribed, and thanks for subscribing to me...best wishes, Tom
Cheers Tom. 👍🏼
Hi, awesome video! Mind sharing the location of the last night’s camp, in the Rothiemurchus forest. I’ve hiked through that way but must of missed the spot. It looks really nice. Thanks!
Cheers mate, I can't remember the exact location now. But it wasn't that far from the Cairngorm Club footbridge coming down from the Lairig Ghru. You can't miss it as it was the first grassy pitch next to the path.
@@WalkWithWallace Thanks for the reply! I will definitely need to camp there someday.
@@paulstancel9731 it's a nice pitch, perhaps a bit close to the path, but you can go around a bit further around the river.
Another great video Robin, really enjoying going through your list and watching them all! I’m planning a trip to the Cairngorms in the next couple of weeks and will be traversing from Braeriach to Cairn Toul. Question for you - just how easy is that route across the tops? I’m a bit nervous at times with heights but from your video it looks like you can take a route that avoids taking you right next to the edge? Cheers.
Hi John, it's a cracking route, you'll really enjoy it. You can avoid the edges as it's pretty broad on the west/south aspects. Just watch your navigation if the cloud drops.
@@WalkWithWallace Thanks mate, appreciate the reply. Keep the great videos coming 👍🏻
@@exploring_the_dram cheers mucker. 👍🏻
Great film Robin, That was some few days you had! Robin when you descended into the Lairig Ghru was that near Carn a` Mhaim by any chance? I want to bag it as a single day out but i want to head back via the Lairig Ghru. I know there is a way down from it but i cant see any posts on YT. PS You are correct about Braeriach`s plateau, Stretches on for miles. Bet it has caught few out in the past. Thanks mate take care, peter.
Cheers bud, this was a great trip. We still talk about it now. 😆
No, we descended on the other side of Ben Macdui, however Kev and I have descended down to the Lairig Ghru after doing Carn a'Mhaim. We headed down before you start heading up Ben Macdui. I didn't vlog that trip for some reason.
@@WalkWithWallace Ah cheers Robin, That is the route i am checking out. I know there is a route down from there just wanting to be sure. Thanks mate, peter :)))
@@MUNROSnCORBETTS no probs Peter. Its just a heather bashing decent into the Ghru. 😁
