Forget the NC500? Reindeer try and enter our van in The Cairngorms National Park!

- We arrive in the Cairngorms after spending 2 months traveling around Scotland in our self-converted Ford Transit, La Bamba. After visiting the rugged Isle of Skye we followed the NC500 around Scotland's Northern tip, but now we head inland to the heart of Scotland. The Cairngorm's National park is a huge area of rugged mountains.
On arriving we explore Avimore in the search of a vegan breakfast, before driving off into the hills above Loch Morlich. While parked up here we are visited by a herd of reindeer who surprise us by appearing at the window of our van.
The next day we go foraging before moving on to an amazingly secluded park up, we use the near by stream to wash in the icy waters, visit lots of forests in the local area and visit the Highland Folk Museum.
The end of the week sees us visiting three amazing waterfalls in one day. The falls of Bruar, the falls of Acharn and the Birks of Aberfeldy. We spend that evening in Pitlochry where we enjoy pints, charity shops and get a chippy.
This week sees us reach the bottom of the Cairngorms, but fear not, we will be making a U-turn before re-entering the national park next week on the east of the mountains.

aha luckily the midges were not about much when we were there - they sound bad in summer!

Unfortunately the single malts never seem to last all that long, haha.
It is super cold to be honest, we do actually both have really good wetsuits, so we may need to dust them off soon.

Lovely area, we've only passed through once before on our way to Skye 10 years ago. However we've recently bought a van.....a Transit van! It's a ready built Autosleeper. Just starting out on van life!

These locations are beautiful. But like Ireland you have to pick early visits inland and van stops at night on the coast if possible. The reason for this is the midge black fly in summer will drive you crazy. The get into everything your food ears etc. anywhere the female can get a blood meal to start laying eggs. Insect repellent works a bit but the midge in summer will drive you mental.

Hey Paul! Tom studied forestry so that developed his interest in foraging and helped him learn how to ID plants. We have a couple books on mushrooms and scotland is the place to go for that! so much fun! we worked on a campsite in scotland a few years ago and there were porcini mushrooms to harvest every day in the woodland near by! was so cool!

We absolutely love Scotland I (Tom) went to uni in Aberdeen and we have both spent a lot of time up there. I’m sure we will be back again soon!

We are planning to go there in May. Any advice regarding ghe weather? Is it still some kind of winter and we need winter tires on the car?
You should be fine in may, we are here now in February and we don’t have winter tiers. May should be quite nice, often nicer than the summer months in my opinion.

Would you guys ever get wetsuits so you can wild swim in all seasons
We have wetsuits but we don’t generally use them as it can be a pain to dry them out in the van in winter. We actually did wild swim throughout the winter in Ireland just had to embrace the cold

I actually don't think they were, plenty more at the wild swimming spot though so not to worry.

At this time Isabel was working for a covid helpline, providing answers on a chat. We are now in a position where we are living off our RUclips earnings which is mind blowing to us.
So jealous! We aren’t allowed to take anything from our national parks…only pictures.
Great adventure can I ask why as so many vanlifers vegan?
I guess vanlife tends to appeal to a certain type of person, but yeah it is weird, nearly all RUclips vanlifers appear to be vegan. I (Tom) actually loved meat & cheese and sometimes feel I'm missing out on a bit of the local culture by not eating the food, but we are trying to minimise our impact on the planet and reduce suffering where we can. If I need to eat poor quality "cheese" and "ham" it doesn't feel like the worst sacrifice, especially with vegan food getting better each year.
Salve the conscience for flooding the atmosphere with diesel fumes ?

How did you guys learn to forage and what's safe to eat n what's not? I feel like so many mushrooms and Berries look the same I'd probably put myself in a&e lol x
Yeah it’s a slow journey. Take some classes, buy a good ID book, and join some Facebook groups. There are some excellent resources out there. The other thing is to try to learn the tastiest and easiest to ID first, maximum reward with minimum risk. Very basic is things like blackberries, cuckoo flower leaves, young beech leaves, wood sorrel. Mushrooms to focus on first would be chanterelles and ceps, just make sure you are confident before you eat
