I did the dndbeyon halloween one shot (the one with the drider) I had him sneak up on them then when I was about to roll perceptio. If hè saw them.. Their bard playd the bagpipes... Hé hadnt told anyone that was his instrument... So they got sneak attackd and spiders dropped on them

I played a Bard of Valor who's instrument was his cooking utensils. When he would cast healing spells he would simply feed his allies nutritious foods and when using my bardic inspirations he would recite my favorite recipes to my allies giving them the strength to win the battle so that they might try my delicious cooking once again.

If I ever get to be a player again, instead of a DM, I am determined to build a Hype Man Bard. He inspires by yelling supportive things, like, "YOUR HAIR LOOKS AMAZING!" at bald characters. Ya know, a completely absurd character, that would be ridiculously fun to play.

Work with another player and play a valor and lore bard, that is basically Dale and Brenan from Stepbrothers

the bard in my party has a 4 in dexterity, and he's a firbolg, yet he chose a ukelele as his instrument. whenever he fails a performance check or a spell missfires, he blames it on his sausage fingers

I've loved all of these videos but I have to admit Sam sounds so much more natural than everyone else when they've presented these. It's a nice tone!

I agree, everyone else uses a "salesman" voice that sounds completely artificial. And that's fine, they're trying to "sell" you on different aspects of the game. But Sam sounded just like Sam and it was nicer in my opinion
Would you say he has a higher charisma stat?
He's used to this type of thing maybe, because he started as a person who read audio books for people learning English language. It probably taught him how to sound natural while reading things aloud for videos like this.

@1:24 When I played a bard, I had six second snippets of songs that matched whatever was on her spell list and played those off my phone when I cast a spell. My first time doing it was Thunderwave-so naturally, Thunderstruck by AC/DC. The group loved it haha.

I'm currently playing a bard, and while i have a song book, that sounds awesome! Did you use an app to get the snippets/have easy access?
@@eclzoetermeer I used QuickTime Player on my Mac and trimmed down the songs to the relevant bits, then saved them in iTunes as the relevant spell name. I imagine you'd be able to find something similar if you're working with Windows. Good luck, hope this helps! (:
I started my first long campaign about a year ago with a group of people I didn't know or only knew from work and I played a bard. I didn't expect to have to sing. I thought I could just say that my character played an instrument or that they performed an amazing song. I started my campaign and they refused to let me do anything unless I could sing well and by that point, it was too late to change to a class I was more comfortable with. Even with vicious mockery if I can't come up with a good enough insult for the DM he doesn't let it work. I do enjoy playing my bard, but I don't like being forced to do things others wouldn't be expected to do.
Do you! It's your character not the DMs or the table if uncomfortable with it you shouldn't be forced
You might also be in the wrong gaming group for you. I know players across the spectrum of IRL TO comfortability, and everyone deserves the freedom to be themselves at the gaming table.
You should be able to play to the level that you are comfortable with. If someone's character has really high intelligence but they themselves aren't that book smart, they aren't expected to, "be as smart" as their character. It's a character, they can be different than the person playing them (and that's often where half the fun is had, playing as someone who isn't yourself). If someone wants to play a bard and can't sing well irl (or isn't comfortable singing in public), they shouldn't be forced to. I hate to say it, but you might need to change groups if you want a more enjoyable experience.
That's ridiculous. Part of the fun of being a bard and using vicious mockery is when you come up with a terrible insult and somehow shame the creature to death with it. At level 1, I insulted a giant spider to death by telling it it had too many legs (or not enough legs? Can't remember which). According to my DM, I managed to stumble across a very specific and weird insecurity, so it took damage.
"Don't know how to play." Describes the music of low level bards.

5th session of my first dnd game about two days ago. More of a reminder comment but enjoy.
this was the day of Mr Noot de Noot, a gnomish animated armour bard who had a trumpet for a head.
casted magic mouth on a pair of golems our party was fighting, first one would sing "Hey Im Tracer" to which the other would reply "But im already tracer" so on and so forth as we kicked their asses to no avail.
Just to add spice we agreed to play the 1hour version on loop during the session as we battled it out.

I always wanted to make a Half Elf Bard with High Charisma and Wisdom and than Dexterity. He is is mostly a pacifist (as in will try a non violence means first OR if a fight is occurring avoid needless killing IF it is possible). He would be all about reading people like an open book and using his words of persuasion to get what he needs. He would have spells that would be none damaging such as Calm, Charm, Sleep, Bane and healing. He would fight using a Rapier and would have a dagger incase he was disarmed. He play the Lute as an instrument.
His minor shown backstory is he is looking for follow a band of adventures and make a song/story of them and their adventures, at first he be very passive as to not "interrupt the flow" but slowly end up enwrapped and forcing to participate, and even growing into a friendship and aiding into their fights and adventures to make sure their friends make it to 'the climax of the song/story'.
A basic character to start, but will evolve over time based on the PCs and the environments of which they walk.
P.S I always liked Bards because they are pretty much the Red Mages, jack of all trades and master of none. That and I know bards get a bad wrap because of the 'trope' people play them as, and want to show what a good Bard can really do.
You have no idea how long I have been waiting for this. Sam's portrayal of Scanlan inspired me to consider multi-classing into bard once I get a few more level ups with my rogue.

Like any spellcasting class, _read the spell description_ before you pick and read it again before you cast.
That "Friends" spell isn't as useful as a lot of people think. Sure you get Advantage on CHA checks for one minute, but after the spell wears off, the target knows you used magic on them (which is probably illegal) and automatically becomes hostile. That's a lot of downside to get Advantage on some checks that the Bard was probably going to succeed at anyway.
Prestidigitation is almost always a better bet for that third cantrip. Huge potential for roleplay and creativity.
And seriously consider taking Magic Initiate (Sorcerer or Warlock) at 4th level to get a cantrip that does some decent damage.

Scanlan the Best Bard, played by a guy who kept saying he didn't know how to play, but was always clutch. The two that stand out in my mind, the (edit) Triceratops, and the fight with Vecna. 😂💕😢💖😎

I play a lizardman (more like gator-man) Valor Bard from a backwater village deep in a swamp. His CHA and CON are his highest ability scores, with his STR and DEX not far behind. He and the Moon Druid are our front-line combatants, and he uses his songs to threaten his enemies (the common theme is that he's going to eat them) and poke fun at his allies. I love how versatile and customizable Bards can be.
My Bard is named Mikhail Buble. 😎

Yes! Bards unite!!!
For starting spells, sleep is a great spell. It is a bit wordy, but once you have cast it once or twice, you will get the hang of it. Isn't that good at higher levels, but there you have hypnotic pattern, another awesome spell on the bard list.

I liked the description and quick build for the bard. My problem is no mention of the College of Swords. I know it's XGtE but I feel that it plays way different than the other colleges. Not that Glamour or Whispers are bad but both of those are enhancing something the bard is already good at. College of Swords is the melee bard which really stands out in a caster class.

That was the most earnest I have ever seen Sam.
Ah, the vid many were most excited for.
Made a Scanlan-like bard for a 1 shot. Rolled horribly all night, couldn't get above a nat 8 and had two 1s. Experienced the sheer agony of futility for 5 turns of combat. Even Vicious Mockery failed every time... until the final turn, when I heard those cherished words: "How do you want to do this?"
I felt so vindicated.
Coming here in 2021 to pray for a Sam bard in campaign 3 😂

Me, having just watched this after making a bard that is the complete opposite: “I think I’ll do well.”
My bard is a grumpy, one-eyed dwarf who hurls threats at team members for "inspiration" promising to main, dismember and drown like a sack full of kittens anyone who doesn't do their job. "Inspiration" in his case is people trying harder not to f*%k up with "Surly" Skorgakir watching over them. And vicious mockery? "Don't even think about it, chum!" and the enemy rethinks their life choices mid-swing.

Rolled a metalhead Half-Elf Bard (College of Swords) and multi-classed in Hexblade Warlock. Unlike most bards, she's a more melancholic, emotional type of musician who is defined by the hardships and tragedies that happened in her life prior to becoming a bard.

Scanlan inspired me to play a bard- I play a half elf college of valor bard named Vendove. He lacks a bit in the common sense department, but is always ready to help his friends with inspiration, a spell, or his rapier, depending on the situation. He's kind of like Rowan Ilbert from Tales of Xillia or Thom from the Wheel of Time.
I love this but I will say be cautious of Friends: your target knows immediately afterward that you used magic to charm it!
