The big thing is when I finally realized I DO NOT have to match my class with a background. No more criminal rogues, entertainer bards, acolyte clerics and sage wizards! It is more fun if you switch it up!
The weird thing is... ...I literally just made a half-elf captain using the alternate salior background 'pirate' whose crew was killed. This feels so weird.
Aww, you guys are spoiling us with this many Ashley content. How am I going to manage with all the withdrawal symptoms once she goes away to shoot blindspot (which is loved by at least a dozen of people)
Thank God I'm not the only one that while I was massively enjoying this video, could feel the cold, hard fingers of New York coming to drag her back. *sniff, sniff*
6:02 my friend once played a half orc barbarian who was actually a table that broke when a fat wizard sat on him, so the wizard turned him into a half orc barbarian with a 5 in all mental abilities and dexterity but a 20 in strength and constitution
Ashley should know that a maxed-out Charisma stat isn't the only thing you need to be a fully-realized character; she's working with a +5 modifier every day of her life.
@Follow the howl Step 1: have a 48 hour memory Step 2: reach level 4, so you can pick a feat Step 3: Keen mind Result: You now have a flawless 720 hour memory!
I've been playing D&D for well over 20 years, even though I know (most) of the stuff that is said in these videos, they are so entertaining that I watch and love them anyway. I'm so happy for this channel and it's success
At a character creating session 0 I once jokingly suggested we just roll every aspect of our characters. We joked about it for a bit until we all realized we had never done that before. So we Did and had a great time doing it.
Personally, I love World of Darkness tabletop games to DND, but something about critical role and the people playing is something special that I love watching. Keep having fun guys.
Ashley Johnson is a treasure and when she is in character I dont see ashley at all, i see the character that she's playing. But sometimes i close my eyes and imagine that it's Ellie from TLOU speaking to Joel, and this was very entertaining to do so for this video. Meanwhile Joel's like "okay yeah but the clickers"
Hey, you. You're finally awake. You were trying to cross the border, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush, same as us, and that thief over there.
Hello fellow critters! I need a bit of your help, and this video is perfect for it! So in this troubling times, I'm having fun making some character concepts ('cause what else am I gonna do, DnD-wise?), but for my latest "creation" I have a hard time figuring out a background to pick (unless I went homebrew, but I kinda want to make my characters as non-homebrew as possible). So the character: They're of the Warforged race, Sorcerer (Wild Mage) class. And their story is that they come from this evil empire that uses Warforged as soldiers for their wars and conquests (as an evil Empire with Warforged would do), but they wanted to experiment with magic-using Warforged. And so this character, they would be the very first working prototype as a magic-casting Warforged, but there would still be problems, bugs (hence the Wild Magic). But first opportunity they got, they escaped, and now they have the double-goal of finding a way to stabilize their magic and stop that evil empire from at least using their siblings as expendable soldiers! So, yeah, I don't know what background to pick that would fit this backstory. The best I got was the Far Traveler (from Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide), both from the fact that they would find the people's customs strange (and vice-versa), as a Far Traveler character would do, and because of the "Fugitive" option that exists within Far Traveler. It seems to fit the character best, but there's still something off: It's not like the evil empire would necessarily be far away, after all. So, hum, if anyone has any suggestion for a better background for them? If not I can stick with Far Traveler; in the end you mostly take them for the bonuses, and the backstory is the most important. I'm just wondering if there'd be one background more appropriate for the backstory I just described?
Tried it out and I rolled a 5th level chair that has mysteriously found himself in the middle of a secret room under an apothecary with a group of adventurers questioning my motives.
A wood elf ranger with the shaman background! , a warlock pact of the raven queen with the haunted one background! , dragon born war cleric outlander background!
I've been cooking up the concept of a charismatic identity-thief, forging documents and "authenticating" them with Prestidigitation-imitated official seals... and now I discover that Charlatan is an actual character background? Good to know my going-in-blind character concept has in-game benefits I wasn't even expecting!
I have three player charcaters in my campaign Aasimar/sorcer- the daughter of a fallen god that has lost her memory and is searching for the truth Tabaxi/rogue the son of a family of hunters but his family where skinned alive by his older brother while he was tortured Werewolf/druid was kicked out of his home and found and ancient staff in a old ruin
The big thing is when I finally realized I DO NOT have to match my class with a background. No more criminal rogues, entertainer bards, acolyte clerics and sage wizards! It is more fun if you switch it up!
I’m making a Warlock who was just a simple Soapmaker. She just wants to live a simple life and take over the family business! Damn the Fae!!
I'm currently playing an elven wizard/monk multiclass with the acolyte background, and it is turning out QUITE fun
i once made a rogue archaeologist...Indiana Jones, i played Indiana Jones
I once played a Dwarf Sailor Monk and he was awesome
I’ve got an Aasimar Criminal Paladin I am quite excited to start playing when everything lets up.
Two Ashley Johnson videos in a row? Thank you, CR
They've gotta take advantage of the time she's available!
Yeah, I have a feeling they are cranking these out because her shooting schedule is creeping up.
and then she disappears for 5 years
when will she return from the war
Right?

The episode about Animal Companions, and it would be an amazing April Fool's

A negative Con Sorcerer? Do they have a sibling named Backup?
No, his name is Caleb.
Or maybe Get Help
@@jpumbaa1 Caleb's con is 6 higher than the character in this video.
Less than 10 con, with the lowest hit die class, is an absolute deathwish
@@patheronaetherson2860 Aside from Wizard, and at least Sorcerers get CON save proficiency.
It's good to see Ellie having a good relationship with a dog.
Youuuuu, oh my goodness, this is gold
Thank you master
The weird thing is... ...I literally just made a half-elf captain using the alternate salior background 'pirate' whose crew was killed. This feels so weird.
Time to change whatever piddly name you came up with to Slapdash O'Leander. :P
He already has a fabulous name: Maximilan Valentine
Oh, that name! Keep it!! 😄
Seeing Ashley dab is all I needed in my life
She's so calm but the words coming out of her mouth are so chaotic. I love Ashley
My favourite thing is just imagining that this is Ellie teaching Joel about D&D stuff.
Aww, you guys are spoiling us with this many Ashley content.

'Slapdash O'Leander' is my next character name.

LOVING all the Ash-o-lee this week!
I suspect many new Slapdash O'Leanders in the near future.
He's gonna be the new Drizzt, isn't he?
It's so funny, I was JUST looking up new backgrounds for a character I'm building right as this was posted! YAY!
I love the idea that a character picks bar fights just to feel the touch of another person! I laughed out loud at that!
that 48 hour memory is a very interesting idea. also did you just put my man Chod on blast? It makes so much sense that he was once a duck.
@Follow the howl Step 1: have a 48 hour memory
Step 2: reach level 4, so you can pick a feat
Step 3: Keen mind

She talks ab dnd with so much passion, that's nice.

“...so much more with which to play.” - audible gasp from me as I hear a sentence spoken aloud without ending on a preposition 😍😍😍😍
Yes!! This made me so happy!

I was just listening to the playlist and all of a sudden, I was like "why do I hear Ellie?" XD
Ashley! Henry!!
This is all I needed in my life, nothing makes me smile more than Ashley Johnson and Henry!!!!

At a character creating session 0 I once jokingly suggested we just roll every aspect of our characters. We joked about it for a bit until we all realized we had never done that before. So we Did and had a great time doing it.
Did they confirm a fan theory that Lionel gayheart is actually a duck that scandlan true polymorphed
Sentient hat piloting a suit of armour, what on earth is a good background for that

And so a new emote was created that day.
WHY THE HELL did you end this, @Critical Role? It was GREAT!!
Personally, I love World of Darkness tabletop games to DND, but something about critical role and the people playing is something special that I love watching. Keep having fun guys.

"Who picks bar fights just so he remembers what it's like to touch another person."
That hits different post-lockdown
I didn't need to learn about background but I will literally click on anything with Ashley in it.
Thanks so much for making these videos. They are awesome. Cheers.
Backgrounds are my favorite addition to the game. I hope to be in a game someday that utilizes backgrounds as more than a couple bonus skills.
I take great care to match my backgrounds to my backstories.
I have just realized Ashley is in critical role! I've only ever known her as Ellie from TLoU, and soon to be TLoU 2
"Is it ok if (Henry) is in?" WHAT KIND OF QUESTION IS THAT?? What MONSTER would say no to the goodest boy???
When you played TLOU first and then started DnD and now you cry every time you hear Ashley talking...
IF this wasnt hosted by Ashley I would have thought it was 'Game Board' from the IT Crowd.

A very nice video.
I'm starting a petition to rename the brightest star in the universe "Ashley Gail Johnson"

Henry's going method as "Background".
