Today’s special guest, Eric Braeden, is a legendary actor, athlete and humanitarian who’s best known for playing the invincible Victor Newman for 42 years on the #1 daytime drama series of all time, “The Young & The Restless”.
He first came to our attention as Captain Hans Dietrich in “The Rat Patrol”, and as Dr. Charles Forbin in “Colossus: The Forbin Project”. And who can ever forget him as John Jacob Astor in “Titanic”, or my favourite, Reese Paxton in “The Man Who Came Back”.
In 2017 he published a highly compelling book entitled, “I’ll Be Damned: How My Young and Restless Life Led me to America’s #1 Daytime Drama.” The book chronicles his amazing journey as a youngster in postwar Germany, to his struggles as a young actor in Hollywood, constantly being typecast in one-dimensional roles playing Nazi officers and bad guys and coming to terms with the realization of the devastating crimes against humanity committed by the Nazi regime.
This inspirational man has dedicated himself to atoning on behalf of Germany, and to finding meaningful ways to advance the relationship between Americans, Germans and the Jewish Community.
He’s won 3 Soap Opera Digest Awards, a Daytime Emmy Award, a People’s Choice Award, and he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He’s been honoured in Monte Carlo, Italy, France, Germany, and he received a humanitarian award by the government of Israel.

This interview with the iconic actor Eric Braeden is unlike any other. Instead of focusing on the usual questions about “Y&R”, I chose to showcase the intellectual, philosophical side of this amazing human being. He was willing to follow my lead and in doing so, he revealed many profound insights into his remarkable life journey, and he showed us his heart and soul. I hope you’ll enjoy this conversation as much as we both did. I am very proud of this very special episode of our show.
Harvey, you ALWAYS go the extra mile when interviewing. As a child, my father loved The Rat Patrol and it's always interesting to find Eric Braeden in some of his earlier roles on many 1960s television. He is such an accomplished and wonderful man; thank you so much, Harvey.

As a Y&R super fan I have watched every episode since Mr. Braeden joined the cast in 1980. I still remember that iconic Christmas episode Eric mentions, which had me in tears for days. Harvey, I have to thank you for showing me a completely other side of the great Victor Newman. As the daughter of Holocaust survivors, it was especially interesting to hear Mr. Braeden’s personal story of growing up as a German who was a young boy when the atrocities of the Holocaust took place and what it taught him. He has learned from history and uses his experience to educate. As the author of a Holocaust book, I was very aware and careful not to mix up nazis and Germans.
Harvey, this was one of your more serious interviews and you did a fabulous job bringing a lot of information to light about Eric Braeden that I’m sure many of his fans know nothing about.
It was especially important to watch as a German and a Jew confront difficult topics as intelligently, sensitively and respectfully as you both did. Bravo, this interview should be shared far and wide.

This is by far the best, most insightful interview I have seen with Mr. Braeden. It's obvious he felt the same way. You are always well prepared and it is obvious you make an effort to touch on subjects that are not commonly asked or addressed in most interviews. While some of those subjects are unavoidable you always bring an intelligent and often fresh perspective to them. I've been enjoying your interviews and I always look forward to the next one!
