  • Showcased here is an old Federal Signal 66L. This is an old mechanical siren that features a large steady burn bulb to the front. This siren has a great sound and the light is very intense.

    Hi Deg,
Beautiful unit! I'm a retired firefighter who builds model fire apparatus. Would you happen to have dimensions and detail photos of the 66L that I could share with a 3D modeler?

    Sounds like Mayberry #1’s siren

Very cool; probably an obvious answer; I've seen some old rigs with a pull out switch, one re-make, which read "sirenlite," I wondering, seeing an old ad, if they all had flash patterns, & also if once the light switch would be pulled out, the siren ran on an early form of timing cycle, or if they were ran, the siren, separately, through a different control, ie as seen with some older apparatus, with their sirens operated by a floor board switch, horn ring switch, or in-dash-board button?

Do not hook these 12 volt sirens to a battery charger. Use a full 12 volt battery using battery cables to get the full sound out of these older sirens.

Forgive the stupid question, but how is your siren wired up? I have a pair of 77LBs that I'm looking to place back into service on our antique apparatus, and I'm hoping that mine and yours are roughly the same. On mine, I see there's one thicker cable which I assume is the +12V power, and two smaller cables, one either for the brake or light, and the other being ground possibly?? Or is the unit grounded through the mount? I'm not entirely sure and don't want to just start connecting things up without knowing for certain and obviously with it being as old as it is, there's virtually nothing to go off of online. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hilltop Gaming sorry for the slow reply. This unit is grounded through the housing. One large wire came from the mount of the siren and is 12+ to activate the siren. A second smaller gauge wire came from the light and is 12+ to activate the light.

AC? I have 2 DC sirens and as soon as the power is cut it comes to a dead stop, unlike yours

This is a DC siren and I am running it off an AC to DC converter. It is just coasting once power is removed, Q sirens and other large mechanical sirens tend to take time to stop spinning.
