  • The small displacement motorcycle class is a FUN class of motorcycle. Gone are the days where you would wonder if you could hold the speed limit, in are the days where you've got bikes nimble enough to hang with much faster bikes, especially in the twists. These bikes are fun for all types of riders, but they definitely have different markets in mind. Which one is best for you? This video will help you decide!

I went with the ZX-4RR. Love this small displacement renaissance. Larger bikes are faster, but I just have more fun throttling small bikes on the road. Don’t need the track.

These small bikes are fun as you can wring to full throttle and unleash the bike's entire potential to get it up to freeway speeds as needed and beyond sometimes. Nice comparison.

Great comparison, Peter. I've been looking at both. It was great to hear you enjoyed your ride on the R3. I own sport bikes of various power levels (148, 94, 67, 47hp) and love keeping my '22 CBR500R between 7-8.5k thrashing backroads, but wringing the twin of that R3 up to 12.5k sounds like an experience I need. I would immediately swap tires for Bridgestone S23 or comparable.
As for the KTM, upon reading the warranty for consumers here in the States, I found that "Ready to Race" is much more than a motto or marketing campaign; it is how they leave consumers footing the bill for warranty claims. Doesn't make sense to me for a streetbike, only as a track toy.

This is a great review! I have loved owning my R3. It's so much fun to lean into turns and rip it around town and back roads. I agree about those blinkers but there is fun to be had with getting the TST Halo blinkers and doing the install yourself. Its super easy and makes the bike look amazing. That KTM is a sharp bike that turns my head for sure but I think if I had to rebuy my bike tomorrow I would still go with the R3. Its had some really cool color options over the years too.

Great description for newer riders. I have a 2022 RC390 that has been race prepped for track use and novice racing. I love it. One thing that is less known is that the KTM is super easy to fix on your own. I've completely rebuilt the RC once due to a crash and it was very straight forward. KTM gives you their spare parts finder on their website that gives you great exploded view diagrams and breakdowns of certain components. People will argue that the Yamaha will also be more reliable, but I haven't had any issues with the KTM that I didn't cause myself.

I love your videos and breakdowns it’s somehow so much different than what’s become the same ol spec list first rides…I can’t even put my finger on it, just a different and welcome feel

If you're a beginning rider, you may also ask what the first and subsequent services will amount to on each bike. Cost of ownership is certain to favour the Yamaha.

I have been agonizing over both of these bikes. They both seem ideal for both my wants and needs. I am favoring the Yamaha simply because of the KTM's reputation of inconsistent quality.
Online threads are replete with various riders complaining of low rev stalling and blown head gaskets on the RC390. Some have responded that those are only with the pre-2017 generation engines but I still notice some griping over later years.
    Any thoughts? Anyone?

I don't think the average person can go wrong with either. My guess is the engine issues you hear about are from riders driving the little single cylinder extremely hard. The Yamaha with it's twin pistons being smaller and travelling less distance may have an advantage in being pushed to the limit consistently. I like both these bikes for different reasons, but I'll be honest, I overlooked the Yamaha until I drove it. The r3 outperforms it's specs.

    Great comparison..👍
A new rival in the segment. In India Aprilia RS 457 has been launched and It's overshadowing every other bikes in its segment. It is taking market by storm for its value proposition.
