I can make an argument that Game 2 of the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals is the greatest game in Joe Louis Arena history. Yes, people will also bring up Fight Nights at the Joe during the Detroit Red Wings-Colorado Avalanche rivalry in the mid-to-late 1990s, but this game was the turning point of both teams' fortunes during and after the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals.
would you be willing to send me a full copy of this game? I have an original broadcast copy that needs shoring up near the end of the 2nd and wanted to use this version to complete it.
Murph is the 5th defenseman in points scored (6th in goals) in NHL history, and he scored the GWG in the series clincher vs Dallas. Defintely wasn't a stay-home D-man. @@SeanP7195
I forgot how terrible those ESPN announcers were. "Detroit has what it wanted and Washington does not have what it wanted, the lead."" Brilliant insight Bill! Also, the constant referring to Lidstrom as "Nikki" by both announcers makes me cringe.
@ 22:00 a perfect example as to why Gary Thorn is the all time goat play by play announcer for the NHL playoffs. Nobody did it better.
Absolutely, I miss him calling games, everyone else sucks now
Oh, I loved that team. Kocur, Brown, Maltby, Draper, McCarty, what a collection of great guys to have play with the superstars.
The definition of true grinders
19 years later and esa tikkanen still has night terrors
Not really. The Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018
@@quentincampbell612 Was Esa on the 2018 team?

Double OT vs St Louis. Stevies blast. Will always be my favorite memory at the Joe.
No player had more drive, more heart than Steve Yzerman. What a leader.
This team would steamroll to a Stanley Cup championship in ‘21. They ain’t seen nobody like this. Good Lord are they incredible!!!
Still the greatest game these eyes have ever seen, DETROIT FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey look. Big hits without a fight erupting every single time.
thats the thing i miss the most in todays NHL
On the Brownie goal, Stevie Y with the big hit on Tinordi that altered the clearing attempt, then running interference for the goal.
My absolute favorite hockey game of all time.
Perfect pass by Lapointe on the OT goal.
Still hurting from that Adam Oates trade.
“AND HE MISSED THE NET!”
As much as I like Gary Thorne doing the commentary, I cannot help but to feel that he is a Redwings/Avalanche homer.
He’s from MD I think
I miss Gary Thorne doing the NHL.
Yeah, he was the best.
Not me.😃
No he was not the best.
I remember the Doug Brown goal like It was yesterday, what a hockey team these Wings.
One of my favorite Wings game of all-time! :D
How can u not love stevie y? Dude is a BEAST
"if you were cutting a redwood tree that's how high you need to get the axe" Good one Gary.
17:34 STEEEVVEEEE YZERMAN!!!!!!!!!!
Damn Sergei could fly.
Well he was certainly well rested...cuz of his lame 60 game contract holdout n all .
I came here for the Esa Tikkanen miss
of all the wings championship teams, this team was my fav
Those are the only ones Osgood has trouble with, the ones from 4,000 miles away
With that hair Chris Simon was the undertaker version for hockey.
And this is a perfect example of why they don't go after small sized goalies anymore.
Esa had the winning goal on the stick. That's how fatal it is not to pay. The event was great and how fooled Osgood
Of course the Capitals got swept in this series. If they couldn’t win this game they couldn’t win any game vs Detroit
They were the best the East had to offer. Totally outclassed.
Bad giveaway by Stevie on that Tikkanen fluff and McCarty, pay attention when you have an extra skater.

Yzerman’s shortie had Murphy (D) with em...
Yzerman: Umm I think I’ll shoot this, no offense Larry . 😂
Yep, smart play by Yzerman, you want a 600 goal scorer shooting or a defensive defenseman?

Ad placements on the JLA boards ....
Hmmm do they make SURGE anymore?
I cringeddddd every time Jamie Mcoun was on the ice this series . Omfg
29:47 .. hah nice one Jamie.
Had Anders Erickson made that OT goal he wouldn't have got traded for Chelios.
I would say that is a top 3 botched moments in NHL history by Esa Tikkanen there

Are u high? Doc is great but Everybodyyyyyyy misses Gary Thorne. I get it that bill say bonehead stuff but still .
This series was a joke
Why?
