Definitely one of the smartest and most technical players in the history of hockey. Incredible hands, intelligence, ice skating. A real gentleman on the ice. The advantages of Datsyuk can be listed for a very long time, but the magic that he created on the ice is the main thing. His execution of the bullets, will forever go down in history. The Magic Man...

Likely the player with the highest pure skill level I've ever seen play the game. I grew up a Blackhawks fan in Chicago, but Datsyuk was always one of my favorite players to watch. His puck control, his poise, his hockey IQ...he was innovative and dangerous every time he touched the ice. What an absolute joy to watch. Every goal on this list, if it were scored by another player, it would likely be their single best goal ever scored. Datsyuk was just different. An artist on skates.

High IQ player, always aware of everything, the way he was able to pick pocket everyone or shadow them in a way they’d never even see him behind them, combined with his skating ability and quick hands/wrist shot, dude was a shark in a pond of fish.

I so miss watching Datsyuk play. I remember his rookie years thinking man this is someone to watch. Those first couple seasons where he was basically just a call up when a spot needed to get filled. QUICKLY got center stage and holy hell every game was so much fun to watch! Have never before or since seem someone better. McDavid is unreal but Datsyuk was just on a different level season after season!

The guys born around my time and who grew up watching the same hockey as me are now starting to filter into the league and you can just tell they were imitating Datsyuk in their driveway in the 2000’s, then they were really getting them down throughout high school and college/on a farm team in the 2010’s, and now they are filtering into the league and they are making what he used to do seem normal and I love it.

His speed and puck handling abilities are not human. Nobody had EVER even come close or attemp to do the things he did, and still nobody after him has either. He brought a style to the game, for stickhandling and deking, that was silky smooth, and allowed players growing up to model themselves after. He’s the stickhandling and deking GOAT. The problem with the Red Wings was they had ao many players from Europe and mostly USSR. We in America never realized how important winning the league was compared to the playoffs. Europeans find the league title, rhe entire years body pf work was more important than a best of 3,5,7 game series where a hot goalie or injuries can change the outcome. They grew up watching soccer and hockey which didn't have playoffs. Ibe read about numerous times. I realize Patsou was past most of this thinking but the early R Wings trams that had players from that USSR wagon had that thought (at least I've been told by former players, coaches this was truth )

      Take aways:
      Datsyuk 754.

      Ovechkin 575.
      Give aways:
      Datsyuk:380
      Crosby:759
      Ovechkin:865
There is a more to hockey then just scoring goals. Datsyuk's defensive prowess plus his dangerous scoring ability made him a more complete player than Crosby or Ovechkin. Players when asked about the best player in the NHL at the time cited Datsyuk as the best in the league. The one guy you did not want to see skating up the ice with the puck, or the guy you didn't want hounding you for the puck on his defensive end.

Gretzky himself even called Datsyuk one of the best players he's ever seen. Datsyuk's contemporaries repeatedly named him as one of the most dangerous players in the game.
His multiple Byng and Selke trophys attest to his greatness as an individual player.
