  • Nalanda, the Buddhist mega-monastery in present-day Bihar, was perhaps the single most famous centre of higher learning in all of Asia. It attracted students from Java, Tibet, China, and possibly even Mongolia and Korea. How did it rise to such eminence? As controversies rage about entrance examinations and higher studies in India today, Anirudh Kanisetti explains the lessons of the past.

Bakhtiar Khilji got sick in a place now known as Bakhtiarpur, where he was treated by his hakims for months with no recovery at all. The peasants recommend a visit to Nalanda for treatment. Bakhtiar Khilji's minister Mahmaad ( mahmaadpur near Bakhtiarpur) called doctors from Nalanda who treated Bakhtiar back to health. Hakims got jealous & enraged with knowledge of doctors from Nalanda, they conspired & persuaded Bakhtiar to destroy Nalanda as a religious deed. Bakhtiar destroyed Nalanda & it's library burnt for six months.

You and I, both, know very well that there are many people in India who'll stand by this information. But the main target of videos like this aren't Indians, but the people outside of India who might actually start appreciating Indian/Hindu ethos. This video is for them so that the Left-lobby can reinstate the fact that everything wrong in India is because of Hinduism and every other faith is what does good here.

@@karanpandey1349 he unlike you mentions his source. He clearly mentions that Buddhist monasteries accross the country were loosing their importance to the state .because they were not willing to be as accomodating to the state as brahmins were .That's it .if you find this simple pragmatic ,historic fact to be offensive then that's because of your pre-existing bias .
Nalandas decline did start with the turkic raid by kilji (an unprotected rich monastry is an easy target for raiders) but it was the states unwillingness to support the institution financially that led to its end .Had the state wanted it ,the damage to nalanda could have been repaired after the raid .why didn't it happen ? Because nalanda had to compete for the funding along with other religious institutions. The one which beneifited the state the most would obviously receive its patronage .

You didn't mention why the university that had survived for centuries disappeared within decades after the raid of " Turkic invaders ".

Do you think Hindu kings like cholas who survived Islamic invasion started favoring Bramhins because the Buddhist centers like Nalanda and Takshashila were destroyed by "Turkic invaders"?

Buddhism lost to Brahmins because Buddhism was simply a philosophy, people were going to the Brahmins for all rites and rituals anyway. Followers of Buddha later turned it into a full fledged religion which Buddha himself had told not to, by that time Hinduism was deeply rooted in the society and so Buddhism spread to places outside of India.

Buddhism is an extension of the main upanishads that preceded Gautama Buddha. Subsequent Buddhist scholars found the need to make it look like a separate faith and invented Soonya Vaada. Buddha himself never suggested that there is ultimately nothing because he knew it was illogical. In modern India, people with political agendas are trying to malign aspects of Hinduism. Everyone commenting how he is peddling falsehood or anti-brahmanism, but I don't think that is true. In fact, what Anirudh is saying is basically common knowledge for anyone who follows Indian history. He is not saying that Brahmins instigated Khilji to destroy Nalanda, like many Brahmin haters on twitter. He is making a larger point how Brahmins outdid the Buddhists in order to secure state patronage and that's a fair point. Loss of state patronage (though it never meant that the state pursued anti-buddhist policy, they were just not favoured) coupled with the Bhakti movement becoming popular led to the decline of Buddhism in India. Also, Bhakti movement only took away the wealthy classes away from Buddhism as the masses never followed Buddhism anyway. The wealthy classes started to donate to the temples instead of the monasteries which led to the gradual decline of Buddism.
By the time Khilji arrived, Buddhism was already but dead in north India.

Nalanda University was not Buddhist monastery but Buddhist monastery were partially part of Nalanda University. Aside from Buddha’s teaching and related books there were several different subject books like astronomy, astrology, Ayurveda, Vedic mathematics etc. Bihar and Eastern UP were focus of foreign and local monks due to Buddha’s life were all around that place.
Don’t play blame game without knowledge. 🤦🏻
According to SO called liberal and leftist, every problem is due to India (on international platform), Hindus (on religious ground) and Brahmins (when topic on Indian society). 😅😂
