  • Less than two years after the war of 1962, China began pushing troops into Sikkim - then an independent country, protected by India - and held out threats of conflict. Then, just-defeated India did something no one expected: It held its ground. This would lead to a spiral of region-shaping consequences, ending with Sikkim being merged with India a decade later.
