A possible tip for backing the trailer/rig into a spot.
My wife is typically my spotter and she will facetime me with the phone camera facing the back of the rig. This gives me a complete view of obstacles on the sides of the spot. It is also a huge help with straightening up into a spot. Its great with larger rigs when its tough to see your spotter on both sides, especially when you have to reverse 'turn' into a spot instead of having an easier back in. It's cut our back-in time more than in half, and has also just about eliminated back-in related arguments HA!

17:58 - That park entrance is a steep climb if heading to upper area. 👍 ||| 22:12 - Took our Micro Mini Winnie from I-40 onto 89A; in April of one year, there was snow on the pavement, down through the winding mountain, no chains, bit of near the front edge of the seat driving. Definitely snow ❄️ in AZ upper elevations. Nice traveling along virtually, by seeing your videos, good feelings return while revisiting the memories. Thank you.

I never, ever really understood all the numbers regarding vehicle/trailer weight ratings. That is until I starting watching the KYD RUclipss. So today, after trading in our trailer for a new one, we headed directly to the CAT scale at I-10 & 101. While I liked the the numbers we got back, I even more appreciated the hystical laugh I got out of trying to understand the garbled PA. Thanks, Marc, for the warning. We’re still laughing this evening. Safe travels!

Agree on anyone waving at you!!!! not saying hello they are trying to let you know something is wrong. Was towing a works trailer loaded last week (materials to a hospital) when a lorry flashed its lights at me ( he even pulled out of inside lane to do it a second time) so I watched my mirrors and noticed a strap dragging on ground, pulled in and sorted. Thanks to the truck driver.

just witnessed via your dash cam, the truck pull out in front of you and the urgency of the flat deck to get over. From a former trucker (myself) i offer you a safety tip to help truckers you are around on the road; if you see them wanting to pull out and you are ok with it, flash your hi-beams so they know its ok to go. (perhaps you are already aware of this) Losing speed when you' re heavy and knowing you have to wait for a car to pass can make such a difference on your fuel economy, and effort to regain that speed again to pass. For a trucker, a quick flash with the headlights and letting them get out is very much appreciated. Another tip so many drivers seem to not know anymore is flashing your headlights when you see those handsome boys in blue (or beige, I think in the U.S.) with their swanky cameras and have customers on the side, to let those folks know where those fellas are in front of them.
Love your vids, interesting choice for the new tow..

Sandra Westley from the UK wow I have watched so so many videos on RUclips you are the first person to weigh there rig, it’s so important in the UK because our trailers have weight limits and they should be no more than 80% of the vehicle to be safe, all I ever see is people up dating there trailers replacing flooring, and couches etc with no thought to weight. Yes it’s against the Law here to overload your axles

I've always refilled at 1/4 of a tank since I started driving. I learned about lines getting clogged with what settles in the bottom of the tank from my father. He wouldn't let us drive without knowing how to change a tire, oil, air filter... Basically we all learned basic car maintenance before we started driving, and not just the boy, girls too. Now I have another reason to not let the car get too low on gas. It strains the fuel pump. I either forgot, or didn't know that one. I've forgotten a lot since the '80s. I learned things you don't need to do anymore (i.e. lube job).

Re: Trailer power cable. Use a one foot or so piece of solid house wire to attach cable to hitch. Use the wire to hold the weight of your power cable up so it isn't hanging from the connector or dragging on the ground. In an emergency the wire will give way. Take the single 12 GA wire and loop it 3 times around a hole on the hitch and then wrap 2 or three tines around trailer power cable. Never a problem!

We have towed ours around 34k miles and use a propride hitch. Towed mainly in the mountains and one month ski trip. Tons of wind and never any sway. Tows great. Only challenge is finding a place to turn her around back 5-6 miles on forest Service roads.

I have the Blue Ox weight distribution anti sway hitch, and I'm not affiliated with the company at all, it was a $1000 investment, but worth every penny. I was forced once to drive home in 60 km/hr cross winds, not something I was eager to do with my family of 5 on board, but the Blue Ox hitch performed. Felt like I was on rails. Safety first.

My plan was to go to Texas over Easter break (spring break for us here in Mexico is the week before and the week after Easter Sunday) and find our new RV. It's just me and my 14 yr old daughter, who has never seen snow or the changing of the leaves. Ready to go full time, but this Covid 19 has screwed everything up. "OVERLOADED?" I can see how a lot of rigs get overload you have a empty back seat that can sit 3 adults. Bring some family and friends along with some gear in the back of the truck and that 680 LBS will be used up. That is why it is so important to look closely at your payload capacity and not your tow capacity. I like how you use the CAT scales and everybody needs to do the same thing weight their rigs and know their capacity. I see a lot of overload rigs on the road that I am sharing the road with.

    • @vernlochtefeld1626
      @vernlochtefeld1626 4 года назад

Agreed more people should learn to use a CAT scale. Especially if they tow a larger TT with a lighter 1/2 ton truck SUV etc. Near Mfgr limits the difference between two finger drive-able & white knuckle towing is in set up and thats at the same CVW. As far as safety & stability are concerned focus on adjusting your WDH and truck & trailer loading so that you replace your unloaded steer weight and can calculate your tongue weight percentage to be in range from your scale slip. In doing so you will have set up your truck & trailer up for maximum stability. CVW, GVW, max receiver & axle weights all valuable to know for safety and are on your scale slips. They are not used in setting up your rig for stability but for checking to stay within Mfgr spec. I transport Airstreams from the plant to the dealerships which is what made me take notice to this video.

We considered ordering a 3/4 ton for our 30' Arctic Fox travel trailer but, it would have been a little close to the payload limit. Not much room for loading up the pickup bed with generators, water, and gear. It was maybe a little over a thousand dollars more to order and F350 instead of an F250. We did. Problem solved.

Hi Marc and Trish - Nice new rig with the F250 and Airstream. Congratulations from Houston. One comment on the fuse and module, #27 and #37 respectively, these two items are no longer used on the 2017+ F-series with integrated brake controller as I understand. Power to the #12 pin on the 7-way is made available by the truck's computer after the trailer is connected to the truck and after applying the brakes to the trailer one time (either via foot brake or the slider on the brake controller device). This then allows current to flow through the 7-way to charge the battery on the trailer. My apologies if this is redundant information. Happy and Safe travels!

My partner retired last march, we sold one of our rental properties last September, we ordered a Airstream Caravel 20FB in December, bought a 2020 Tundra Limited in January, picked up the Airstream February 27th and our Condo went on the market March 7th! Our plan was for me to retire as soon as we had a viable contract on the condo and we had reservations for June in Wyoming to start our year+ adventure in our Airstream! Reality.....6 showings and everything stopped with the sale of the condo....our state is on lockdown until June 10th. We are trying to stay positive but it is really hard! We were to be in Alberta for most of July and then Alaska for August. We are working really hard to “keep our daydream”! Thanks for your positive spin and showing that we are all in this together! LOL! You bet this is the summer to remember. We bought an RV last October and used it a few times, including on the warmest Christmas in IL in years! And now we can't go any where. All the camp grounds are closed. :( I hope this changes soon. But we are talking to a friend about his families farm. :) I love your videos. Thank you so much!

We cannot say enough good things about the cordless dyson. We bought one for our rig and mounted it in a compartment behind the TV the bedroom. It worked so well that we got rid of the big vacuum from our house and put a cordless dyson for home also. (We Some Time RV). When asked we tell everyone to get one and they will thank us later.

Mark, Watching your CAT Scale weighing process, Should you have disconnected the trailer on the scale, then position the truck between the split scale for the front and back axel weighing process?
You would have a separate weight of the trailer and a separate weight of both axles of the truck. When using the equalizing bars, you are effectively transferring the tongue weight between the front and rear axles of the truck. I would think this process is actually skewing the weights I would think. Thanks

Love this, we were 1 year out from F/T but thanks to the stay at home order, we have chopped away at the house "to do before selling" list....Maybe sooner????? No RV yet though :( Thanks to Mark & Trisha ( KYD) I have recently discovered another necessity: A citrus juicer has now made the cut for moving into an RV (1 pt lime juice; 1 pt simple syrup; 1.5 - 2 pt tequila; splash of sparkling water......YUM!). I so enjoy your videos! Thanks for the information as well as the laughs! No chocolate surprises for us!

One of the best parts of the vid was the Cat Scale sequence 11:40. We have a somewhat heavy rig and getting a weight on a Cat Scale is on my list. Honestly I have been a bit intimidated because I wasn't sure how the process works ... now I won't feel like a complete idiot! Thanks 👍

I’m a truck driver and you will definitely love the CAT scale app. It’s so easy and you don’t have to go inside to pay or get the scale ticket. I have the app and wouldn’t want to be without it.

Great video. Coming from a retired Navy salvor - if a tank is not "pressed up" the water shifting back-and-forth is known as a "free surface effect". But I also think keeping the water weight in the fresh water tank helps in towability...and I have a ProPride hitch. But good stuff and appreciate your videos!

The magnetic ezconnector is 100 percent waterproof and secure. Before that trailer wire connector would corrode and trailer disconnected light came on often. Check it out. I also converted our car hauler to this setup as well

Hi guys... My wife and I are in the process of purchasing our first RV (2020 Cherokee) and I have been doing as much research as possible for newbies and love your videos. I am the Operations Manager for Garnet, the creators of the SeeLeveL Holding Tank Monitor. It was nice to see that quick shot of the display early in the video! If you have any questions about the system, I would love to answer them for you. I’ve been with Garnet for 8 years and love the RV culture. I look forward to our own adventures and I’m sure we will make some mistakes along the way, so keep posting great content to help us out! Thank you!

What a coincidence how you were talking about liquid surge causing sway (that's the trucking term for slosh in the tanks) then that rig was draining its tank just for that reason. To get that 7 way to fit tight you can put a few wraps of electrical tape around the body of the connector to increase the diameter a bit and make it more snug.

Loved this video and I commend you for warning the other travelers of their water leak. I had an unfortunate experience last summer driving down I-95 in Florida. We HAD a bike rack mounted to the rear bumper of our travel trailer fail. I heard one horn beep somewhere behind me and both wife and I watched for any signal from other drivers that we had a problem. Long story short drove another 110 miles to home not knowing we were dragging bikes and bike rack. I’m super cautious and had an extra long bike lock cable woven through the bike frames and rack so I didn’t leave bikes on the road other than the aluminum shavings from the end of my handlebar. I was disappointed nobody tried to signal me other than one horn beep. In hindsight the bike rack on rear of rig was a bad idea as it also put too much weight in the wrong place.

Great video. Interesting comment on the power fuse for trailer plug. I have learned over my last 2 new trucks to instruct in the deal that the line is to be live on delivery of the truck. Several years ago could not figure out at first why my truck at that time was not charging the trailer when towing, to discover when I tested the line, no power. I put the fuse in at the time, next service asked the dealer why not active when you buy it, their comment was that not everyone wants it, so they it to the owner. My comment was that needs to be a question for the customer on delivery, after all it was purchased to tow. Had a friend on a tow with his new truck last fall commented to me that his battery on the trailer was maybe going, I checked his truck, no fuse. They are new to RVing and again the dealer knew that he purchased for towing. Also the rv dealer did not check either when they picked up the unit.
