As an Englishman I still watch this in awe. We have had some faster backs but I still haven’t seen another player like Jonah. Met him once in London when he signed his book from me. Just in person he was huge. Can’t imagine what it was like for the opposition on a rugby field with that at full pelt running at you!!
+normalcc I agree. It annoys me when people say that Lomu couldn't do what he did back then in today's era. He was a 6'5 120 kg winger who could run the 100 metres in 10.80 seconds, there is no other winger around today who can match those stats. Just look at what he did in this game the video is taken from, he steamrollered over 6'3 125 kg Phil Vickery and 10 minutes before that he flattened 6'2 105 kg Mike Tindall and 6'3 100 kg Ben Cohen on his way to scoring a try. It's not as if those guys are any smaller than players around today.
"Jonah Lomu against England : 8 tries in 7 tests. Against the Springboks 0 tries in 12 tests. " a quote from some clown on here, yea he was targeted well, but didnt stop him setting them up for the players around him to score mainly Cristain Cullen who always hovered around Lomu.
It's funny how some people think Lomu is over rated but they never played rugby in there lives. It's not easy to do what Lomu did especially the level of players he did it to they weren't you average Joe's. Lomu was truly on a class of his own. RIP BIG MAN!! YOU MADE RUGBY WHAT IT IS TODAY!!
Probably health related but he was mediocre out of the 95/99 world cup. Think he still has the worst strike rate of any NZ winger who has 20 caps in the professional era
simpson-daniel depriving us of the ultimate duel. Greatest tackler in the history of rugby union v greatest attacker in rugby union history. RIP Big J, you're sorely missed by every England Rugby fan for your sheer excellence and humbleness. Legend.
It’s a badge of honour. Ive watched hundreds of interviews, after dinner speeches, podcasts, etc and ex pros love talking about the honour of playing with the big man himself and being on the same pitch, and of course being bent double when he hands you off / steamrollers you, etc. it’s certainly no shame for even big units to have been humbled by Jonah AND they always seems to have a beer with him and the boys afterwards in the players bar. RIP big fella
absolute beast of a winger , no winger around today is as devasting, not savea, not skudder, nobody! and the guy was fighting a look kidney disease at the same time ! one can only imagine how much more devasting he would of been if 100 per cent
Lomu was physically..a shadow of his former self here in 2002. After the Wales game..the Last game of the tour..he was in hospital and in a bad way. Lomu in 95...is still thr most physically superior specimen ever seen.
You can say the same thing about rupeni caucau. He could run around you and through you and imo was a better attacking winger than lomu. Only thing is he lacked discipline with his preparation and physical wellbeing.
@@davidtaliai996 you forgetting something..they had defensive schemes set up to stop Lomu. Backlines would deploy three players to tackle Lomu or atleast always prevent him from gathering momentum. Was the same methods used on Caucau? NO...not at all. Lomu at his best was used as a decoy for Wilson and Cullen to score tries. Caucau was great for the blues in 03. Left to play in france..played mostly second division and scored wonder tries. I think prime lomu is still the best attacking winger overall. Nadolo just as dangerous. Caucau has to be up there though.
@@jldp24 they attempted to gang tackle him but he was too strong. He didnt have the spatial awareness of a joe roff or ben tune. I just have to love the mindset you see here, what a tank! Wings these days are all about darting, evading. Even the big wings, North, Savea, Tuilagi (there's more than one in the family guys...) Gear... sure they go through people if they need to, or try to... but this monster, Lomu, 3 times in this one clip it wasn't a step outside of a defender, each and every time it was a step IN TO them.
haha, i was at this match. I remember it took at least 3 players to bring him down each time. England won in the end by 3 points i think. But definitely one of the best matches i've seen
No shame in that- big Johah put loads of great players flat on their arses- that's why we still respect and remember him all these years after his test career ended. A true great of the game.
yeah but lomu accomplished what he did in the sport with a serious kidney disease. Their was a documentary done on lomu and medical specialists stated that because of his disease he was really only operating at around 50-60% of his physical potential. Now take that into consideration that the disease didn't allow him to perform at his best and it cut his career short, so what he did on a rugby pitch was pretty phenomenal! Now just think what he would of been like at 100%, unstoppable!
The Cornish rock 🤣😂🤣.. the Cornish rock just became the Cornish speed bump 🤣😂.. hats of to mr vickery tho.. gotta have big balls to try take Jonah head on 🥇🥇
Phil was a behemoth 130kg prop... and he wasn't short either (6'4). He was essentially bigger than Lomu... Of course he could just stand in front of him and it'd slow Lomu down a lot even if the tackle wasn't made... The other guys that Lomu ran into before Phil were backs sub 90kg...
@@sheldoncooper0 That's true but at least Phil got close and put the shoulder in. Sometimes that's as much as you can do. Once he slowed Jonah down a bit, Dallaglio could try to wrap him up. he may not have been the most complete player, bit shaky in defence and under the high ball, work rate was low, but man he is probably the most gifted player ever in terms of speed, size and strength. To put a prop on their arse as a back is nearly impossible these days
