      @@Mr___X I'd say it's really good footwork, look at it properly and you can actually see how he goes out then in instead of in and out. Mike Brain was certainly one of the best defending full backs in his time and leaving him for dead like that is very impressive

    • @Mr___X
      @Mr___X 2 года назад

      @@xxwales15xx33 Basic was probably a bit harsh. I do think Brown has a shocker though. There's no need to be that square to him, he has the touchline as a defender, there's almost no chance Campagnaro beats him down the right. Brown can show him down the touchline and position himself better to make a tackle. Instead it seems like he's trying to absorb the hit, expecting Campagnaro to try to run straight through him instead of around him. He sells himself and makes the step look much better than it is, but it's still good play by Campagnaro. Nice try.

    • @xxwales15xx33

      @@Mr___X "he has the touchline as a defender, there's almost no chance Campagnaro beats him down the right"
      Even more reason why Campagnaro's step is so good (To illustrate my point of him stepping out and in) is that he fooled Mike Brown into thinking he was gonna take him on the outside, which you said it would be almost impossible to beat him in that case. If Campagnaro stepped in and out trying to gas him on the outside then Mike Brown would of tackled him into touch if not atleast slowed him down enough for a his teammates to get back in time. But he knew he was close to the touchline himself and because of that fact I recon he wanted to make Mike Brown think that he was gonna go for the outside so that he would tackle him into touch, his plan was to step out and in to fool him and it worked a treat in that short space of time. You could make a point he was caught abit sqaure on him though but I don't think that negates the fact he got done dirty there 😅

    • @AndrewDavidForde
      @AndrewDavidForde  2 года назад +9

      @@Mr___X rubbish. The nature of the kick means no player can blitz and no one in the defence can commit. Cuthbert can’t drift either as he leaves his inside shoulder open. It’s an absolutely fantastic pass by Farrell to Daly at full momentum. Cuthbert arguably could have done better but to say he was ball watching is not true. Daly was on another level that year - very few defenders would have stopped Daly in that position.

    • @Mr___X
      @Mr___X 2 года назад +1

      @@AndrewDavidForde It's not rubbish, Fordey. Go to 4:45 and pause it.
      It's a 2 on 2. If Farrell steps inside Roberts, that's on Roberts and Tipuric (who is going to close the gap before Farrell gets to the line, making this unlikely but possible). If Farrell steps Roberts to the outside, that's again on Roberts. It's not the winger's problem. If Cuthbert tucks in to cover Farrell just in case he beats Roberts on the outside (which it looks Cuthbert might be doing because he is basically stood directly alongside Roberts, but in reality he isn't covering the inside at all) then it's a simple pass to Daly for a clean run in. So, if Farrell does Roberts on the outside, it doesn't matter if Cuthbert covers, Farrell can float a pass over him or offload, even if he only makes a half break past Roberts. Covering the inside in a 2 on 2 situation like this is nonsensical and guarantees a try. Farrell doesn't even have to make a clean break to take Roberts out and send Daly in for a clear run in. If Cuthbert waits to see if Farrell beats Roberts on the outside, then it's too late, he wouldn't have any time to react at all to any pass out of the tackle. The defensive duty is all on Roberts to stay on the outside of Farrell, ideally show him back inside where Tipuric and the other defenders can cover. If Roberts gets beaten, so be it. Cuthbert has to worry about one thing and one thing only: Daly. This is simple stuff: 2 on 2 like this, where your defenders are defending outside the attackers and can force the carrier back inside, means you cover one man each. You don't blitz or double up, that's only a last resort option if the attackers are already outside the defenders, which is not the case here.
      Right, now play it at 0.25x speed from 4:45. Watch Cuthbert's eyeline. He's looking at the ball. He's looking at Farrell, even as Farrell is already shaping to pass. Roberts has squared Farrell up, anticipating a dummy. Cuthbert is STILL looking at Farrell. Cuthbert is unaware of Daly, the only man he should be worried about. At 4:46 (please, watch this in slow mo), the ball is halfway between Farrell and Daly. THIS is when Cuthbert turns his head and sees where Daly is. He waits until the ball is almost past him to finally take his eyes off the ball to see where the man he should be covering is. Daly has been drifting on a diagonal to get outside Cuthbert. Cuthbert has been dropping back, on his heels, and only now turns his hips to get in a position where he can usher Daly to the touchline by showing him the outside. But he has no momentum, because he hasn't watched Daly and seen that Daly has accelerated. All of this takes Cuthbert by surprise - he doesn't expect Daly to be running as fast or as wide as he is and, if you roll the clip on, he puts his head down at 4:47 because he realises he is out of position and is about to be done for pace. So he takes his eyes off him again, this time because he needs to break in to a sprint as fast as possible to cover the ground he has let Daly make through ballwatching. Daly has already caught the ball when Cuthbert realises he is in the wrong defensive position, with his body at the wrong angle, with the wrong velocity to stop Daly. This is awful defending and it ends up with Cuthbert, despite being a good 10-15 yards ahead of Daly as Farrell is lining up the pass, having to try to tackle Daly from behind. But because Cuthbert was in both a poor position and not moving quickly enough until it's too late, he is simply beaten by line and speed. He cannot tackle him in to touch as he gets his angle wrong. He can't catch up with him as Daly is running much faster than Cuthbert. You can see that Cuthbert is still ahead of Daly by a good yard or two when the camera angle cuts to the sideline view at 4:47 but it doesn't matter, Cuthbert was too slow to react to Daly speeding up. So Daly ends up running past him and Cuthbert puts in a soft, high, ineffective last ditch tackle which perfectly demonstrates how not to defend. If you are the last man in a situation like this, to end up behind the attacking player is shocking. If he gets bumped off, or even if gets stepped inside or out, that's bad but it's understandable. To end up directly behind him, which you can see at 4:49, is basically impossible if you cover your angles correctly. The only way that happens is if, literally, you let the ball carrier run past you. Cuthbert does exactly that because he isn't watching where Daly is until Daly has the ball.
      To put it simply, Daly beats Cuthbert before he's even caught the ball. Daly scores this try at 4:45 because he realises Cuthbert is ball watching, he arcs his run to the outside, and hits full stride. This takes Cuthbert out of the game and if you watch this clip back, you will see that Daly basically has a clear run in. Cuthbert doesn't even impact his run. Daly doesn't hand off, he doesn't step or flick his heels up, he doesn't need to. He has scored because of Cuthbert's awful positioning. If you edited this video and took Cuthbert out of the game, it's not clear that Daly even has a last man to beat - that's how big the mistake was and it was done before Daly had even received the ball.
      So what should have happened even in a situation where the clearing kick is poor? The moment Farrell starts winding up to pass, Cuthbert should already be aware of Daly's position (he could run an inside angle, for example) but he should have one eye on Daly and be running to block whatever line Daly is going to take to the try line. He doesn't do this. Because he is ball watching. If he stays vaguely in line with Daly, showing him to the outside so he isn't flat footed, he can stop Daly by forcing him in to touch or tackling him. But his positioning has to be right and he needs to have momentum, not stumbling back on his heels just as Farrell is passing the ball. If any young player is watching and wants to know what to do in a 2 on 2 like this, you let your inside man (Roberts) deal with the ball carrie (Farrell) in this situation. If your inside defender gets beaten, it's not your responsibility. It's the winger's responsibility to stop the free man, because it's a 1 on 1. Cuthbert's obviously fatigued but this is semi pro level defending. He's a winger not a forward, tiredness isn't an excuse here. There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for the poor positioning, which comes about because Cuthbert is ball watching and not doing his job. Again, his job is to anticipate where Daly is going to try to score the try. If he does not bother to watch Daly until the ball is already flying through the air, then it's too late, he has no way of anticipating, the play has already been made, and as I said the try is already a nailed on try as soon as Daly catches the ball.
