It's amazing how Mr. Dravid gives credit to Bhajji and say's he won the match for them and credits others but stays ever so humble and selfless. A true gentleman and one of the greatest to have ever played the game. I take pride in being your fan and the Indian cricket team. Thank you for your contribution for the country on behalf of all the Indians.
But that's the truth about test cricket. You only win by taking 20 wickets. The rearguard batting was phenomenal, no doubt. Maybe the greatest batting performance following on. But the reason why the test is memorable is the subsequent win. That only happens because of the incredible bowling.
@@VCT3333 That's the point. Without questioning the humility and quality of Rahul Dravid and Laxman, you can't win a test match without taking 20 wickets, irrespective of whether you score 200,300 or even 500 runs. A good partnership may save a match with draw but can never win. And that's one of the reason I feel test cricket is tilted too much in favor of bowlers, just the same way 20-20 is tilted towards batsmen.
Honestly, this was THE test match of the last decade. There was soo much drama... A hat-trick, a follow on, a mind boggling partnership against some of the best bowling squad you'll ever come across and then folding a legendary team within 2 sessions on the last day breaking their 15 match win streak. It doesn't get better than that. That was Test cricket at its best.
As an Australian; Laxman's 281 would have to be the best innings I've seen because they were in a hopeless position. Laxman also did something similar in 2010 against Australia too. Australian's have always rated Laxman on part with Sachin and sometimes even higher!

Not necessarily, especially in Laxman's case. People realised this was something very epic by stumps on day 4. The win only compunded everything but no one in Test cricket has played an innings as great as that one ever since.

Even people forget that marathon 140 by Gambhir in NZ 2009, in which he batted for hours and hours and hours. But the result? Just a draw....
Of course. There were many instances were batsmen or bowlers fought back from no where and brought the match close to victory and lose at last moments. Those may be discussed for few days, but not for long. BTW big games are exceptions.

it can .... and it will .... someday some guy will inspire his teammates to dominate world cricket again .... india under kohli is a possibility but not yet there, wi of 80s were the best team because of their bowlers. Clive Lloyd took a bunch of country boys and built the most dominant team cricket has witnessed. Waugh did the same for AUS. AUS were just as good, but maybe the fear factor was not as much. Ind don't instill that fear in the opposition(away from home) yet. Gave eng a scare in 1st match 2018 but wilted away. The tickets for all the 5 days were purchased by our Uncle. My cousin's went for the first 2days as I had my exams going on. I joined from the 3rd day around 1-1.30 ish in the afternoon. My school was at Park Street and I went to the stadium alone by public bus (my first time). I was 12 then...by the time the word got around on 4th day of a India fight back people started pouring in. But it was after tea that the Eden pitch played tricks. H.Singh and Sachin got almost 8 in total. Bansal was raising his finger on almost every lbw appeal while the English umpire turned down everything. Dada made bhajji change ends to get him.bowl from the end Bansal was standing. It was 110,000 people in the stadium..the match ended at 3.30-4pm. people had 🔥 torches in their hands. A random guy next to me ( he must have been in his 40s) said " you will never forget this day"
I was doing my Engineering away from home and the only way to watch the match was to stand along with a crowd of college mates at a small fast food dhaba nearby the college. Despite the pain of standing for almost all day, nobody wanted to go. We knew that we were watching something special. Watching Laxman's batting is such a delight. Even his defensive shot had such class.
I owe my dad a lot to take me to eden gardens to watch the final 2 days of this amazing test match. I was just 9 years old & the outcome, drama of this test made me a cricket fan forever. These players became my childhood heroes.
Steve Waugh’s legendary Australian side came in with 15 consecutive victories (no draws mind ya) and ended up loosing two in a row and with it the series. Indian cricket would never be the same after. The Dada era had started and it was there to stay
Congratulations to Laxman and Dravid for inspiring people to not just give up and keep fighting and Kudos to the Australian for applauding vvs Laxman knock
Just Imagine that now if any player plays the same way to bring back the team from INNINGS BEHIND TO LEAD THE TEAM TO VICTORY how crazy the social media might go
I come from very small village in India where cricket is barely watched by peoples esp in those days 2001, my uncle was very big cricket fan and I don't remember much things because I was 7 year old but I still remember he used to tell peoples about day 4 Laxman and dravid giant partnership . I also remember nobody took him so seriously as I think he was the only cricket lover in my village lol and when I grew up I finally realised why he was so happy all alone ..
One of the greatest cricket series of all time. Seriously underrated. The first Test was close until Gilchrist's counterattacking century killed the game. 2nd Test was arguably the greatest ever. But the 3rd Test is criminally underrated. It could so easily have been 1-2 instead of 2-1.
'Australians are sporting' -VVS. Now that is something, that can be debated here in the comments. Great Knocks by the two real Gentlemen of cricket. Flamboyant and Elegant Sir VVS Laxman and Firm, rigid, temperamental Sir Rahul Dravid. I fell in sheer awe, by this feet. Turning the tables against Aussies and winning even after being forced to follow-on is absolutely sensational, heroic and marvellous. Poor Aussies could only regret their decision of imposing follow-on. The crowd played its part really well also.
@@anujmchitale One would never know.. but I would credit Ganguly with it as he was always known to be a top decision maker and had a great knack for spotting real talent.
The match that marked a new era in indian cricket from two players who defined their generation- against the best bowling attack of that era! players of such calibre are unreal! those who watched the match only can realise the gravity of that match!
I was a kid watching this live on television and I remember the elation of beating Aussies from such a hopeless position, this has to be the best Test match ever!
Laxman when he gets going, run flows. In Perth he made 280 odd runs and his strokes were classic . He is very elegant player like Dilip Venkasarkar, Azarudin . In Perth I think , is the best knock with full of pulls, cuts , hooks and drives. worth to watch.
A Test match is like a war n the sessions like battles. It's abt winning the key sessions, thereby winning the war. Judging by the current situation of test cricket, for me , this would be the best test cricket match of all times.
It depends on the scenario. I felt VVS was better against a spinning attack while Rahul was amazing against pace. I remember how fluent Dravid was against England in England at no. 3 when the ball swung. He made sure he whethered the swing attack till the sheen went off the ball saving a lot of other batsmen. Against Australia, VVS was always better at no. 3 when Shane Warne came in.
Agree. Chappell implied that, I think. No one could have matched Dravid on grit & determination. However, by sheer aptitude, Laxman was a great number 3. Maybe wishful thinking, but if somehow Dravid would have opened with Sehwag & Laxman, Tendulkar & Ganguly followed thereafter, we would have been unbeatable in the first decade of this century.
Dravid did open for India, both in ODIs and Tests, either that did not work for the team or the team couldn't afford not to play Dravid at 3. Dravid was more of an anchor, someone who is an ideal number 3, having faced so many deliveries, none to match yet. Laxman always wanted to bat in the middle order, and if you ask me, his batting flair was a treat to watch, he was one of the few players whose batting had a certain rigid unpredictable style, which was very annoying for bowlers in general, not to forget those hooks and pulls on the up. Both are THE legends of the game, maybe the records would have been here and there. We, as fans, should acknowledge, these unsung heroes more and more and more. The batting stalwarts of the Indian Team was NEVER a one man show.
It was if we had won a World Cup. Hugs, High-Fives, Fireworks and Celebrations were all around for days and weeks. Laxman and Dravid lead from the front and Harbajan.
It's true. The test match at Eden Gardens against Australia where we won after being asked to follow on, and then the NatWest final against England chasing 325 are two games that changed Indian cricket and made us believe that we can be the best in the world.
I know Indians talk a lot about 83 WC win, but this is the test match that gave a generation of Indians the will to fight , and believe in that it's not over until its over. , it coincided with the resurgence of TV internet audiences,. The present indian team should always look at this moment when the indian team starting believing in itself.
The clarity of his thought, crispness of the words...very impressive... and he is a master story teller....I mean giving a detailed account of an incident...unmatched skill.
Probably the greatest Test Match I have ever heard of..This truly would have been the match the light the spark of Test Cricket craze in India...cause man what happened in the ground that day is truly unfathomable and special. That moment cannot be redone
this must be the greatest innings top no 2 in world cricket after bradman 270 this innings against the best bowling attack comprising mcgrath warne gillespie i think no team would have played in there own backyard salim malik played an innings to save the test match 7 years prior this was match winning innings salute to very very special laxman
Bradman's 334 with 46 boundaries in Leeds in 1930 is more famous. He made 1st session: 105 runs in 153 balls , 2nd session: 115 runs in 152 balls and 3rd session: 89 runs in 115 balls, total 309 runs in a single day.
Aussie blowing attack frestated and desperately did everything to break the partnership... I still remember kaspro doing a action of a eagle (strange action) in his run-up to divert laxmans concentration....
What iconic batting by two of the greatest Indian batsmen of modern times (along with Tendulkar & Sehwag). We were lucky to have all four of them playing together for our country in tests. And to think that Ganguly saw it fit to relegate Laxman to No 6 (even after him!), in tests, is an unpardonable act. The biggest blot on his captaincy. The single reason for us to have an indifferent test record despite such a vaunted batting line up.
Yes U r Spoton infact whole team didn't want him in World Cup 2003 team as I heard from Dada in Lakshmans 281 nd beyond Book launch in Kolkatta video that i saw recently. Its bcaz they all Sachin Dravid Sairav Veeru Zahir all not want Lakshman to be more famous than them.🙄🙄😤😤
@@reinhardvanastrea4235 not only this, India that time did that very often, specially in test. at 2004 Australia tour, we even came close to win the series.

Unbelievable, unforgettable, unimaginable, unthinkable.................the test match that goes in the books of Indian cricket as one in a thousand (can't say million, as tests are very less nowadays, even one days, as T20, the cashcow game, is being played and shown more in TV as serials)......the way VVS counterattacked along with the company of Dravid the great innovative Warne, reliable McGrath, hardworking Gillespie was absolutely fabulous.... sorry Steve Waugh.....being such a great bloke and a humanitarian..... that piece of cake was not yours.... can't forget those golden years of cricket.......absolute contest of temperament, skill, stamina, flamboyance etc.,,,,,
For me, the 2005 Ashes is the greatest test series ever. This 2001 series is just behind. I’m an English cricket fan though and that’s only my opinion. Indian cricket fans will say the 2001 series is the best series ever. That’s cool. Cricket is great because of the different opinions fans have. 👍👍
For someone of Chappell's caliber to rate Laxman as a better #3 after everything Dravid has done for us in that slot speaks of how strong that batting lineup really was.
Great to hear from Dravid and Laxman themselves, I was happy to hear Laxman’s final comment about how despite the Australians suffering a loss, they appreciated and congratulated Laxman’s and Dravid’s knocks.
I was given a chance to revisit the past, I would always choose to be in the eedin gardens on 14th march to vitness the marathon of VVS laxman and Rahul Dravid.
Laxman 281 probably the best knock I have seen in my life along with some of the great knocks of Brian Lara...probably this is the reason why many crickters rate Lara ahead of Tendulkar as per test matches is concerned

Why Ian chappal is always on the beach😂
Ajmal Sami cuz he lives in Austtalia, thats why. Hope u get it
Happy retiree, ha ha.
Haha
becuz he needs to chill the fuck out!
Because Australian cities are at the coast of Australia. Middle of Australia is desert.
I don’t think Laxman gets enough credit for how good of a batsman he actually was.
I owe my dad a lot to take me to eden gardens to watch the final 2 days of this amazing test match. I was just 9 years old & the outcome, drama of this test made me a cricket fan forever. These players became my childhood heroes.
And I still remember Tony Greig commenting " The whole of Bengal erupted"
Steve Waugh’s legendary Australian side came in with 15 consecutive victories (no draws mind ya) and ended up loosing two in a row and with it the series. Indian cricket would never be the same after. The Dada era had started and it was there to stay
GREATEST INNINGS OF OUR LIFETIME...DON'T THINK WE WILL SEE ANOTHER INNINGS LIKE THAT...THE INNINGS THAT CHANGED INDIAN CRICKET...
Just get goosebumps listening about this match... One of the landmark moment of Indian cricket ❤️
Congratulations to Laxman and Dravid for inspiring people to not just give up and keep fighting and Kudos to the Australian for applauding vvs Laxman knock
For IPL lover indian Cricket Team change after 2007 T20 World Cup
But real Cricket Lover Think everything Changed after This Match in Indian Cricket.
Just Imagine that now if any player plays the same way to bring back the team from INNINGS BEHIND TO LEAD THE TEAM TO VICTORY how crazy the social media might go
Ben stokes did
I saw it live. Eden Gardens and VVS' 281. I will cherish it all my life.
@0:09 secs.... It was captain Ganguly and not John wright who promoted Laxman up the order.
But the advice would have very well come from Wright.
@@anujmchitale
One would never know.. but I would credit Ganguly with it as he was always known to be a top decision maker and had a great knack for spotting real talent.
Dravid is not just former Indian batsman, He is Former Captain..
The match that marked a new era in indian cricket
from two players who defined their generation- against the best bowling attack of that era!
players of such calibre are unreal!
those who watched the match only can realise the gravity of that match!
I was a kid watching this live on television and I remember the elation of beating Aussies from such a hopeless position, this has to be the best Test match ever!
Australia may forget their all worlcup final winning match...but they will never forget this match
Laxman when he gets going, run flows. In Perth he made 280 odd runs and his strokes were classic . He is very elegant player like Dilip Venkasarkar, Azarudin . In Perth I think , is the best knock with full of pulls, cuts , hooks and drives. worth to watch.
When did he make 280 in perth?
Good 'ol days of DD National, DD Metro, DD Sports!
That Eden test will remain forever in my mind. .. test cricket at it's best.. Dada u moulded the team from turmoil .. true inspiration for billions..
A Test match is like a war n the sessions like battles. It's abt winning the key sessions, thereby winning the war.
Judging by the current situation of test cricket, for me , this would be the best test cricket match of all times.
I still remember this match shouted with joy and excitement ...takes me back to my childhood
Very very special inning from very very special batsman of India......vvs laxman
With all due respect, Rahul Dravid was the best number 3 India could have had :)
VVS against Australian bowling attack was poetry!
@@divyadarshanjain5820 Agree. Nice post. Thanks.
I keep on watching it's clips even now . That's what you call a match .
One of the best series I have witnessed. Perhaps the start of modern Indian cricket.
Rahul dravid is one of my all time favourites, what a gentleman. Love from Pakistan 🇵🇰.
One of the best comebacks in Test cricket ever!!
It’s the sole reason a follow-on is so rare these days
It was if we had won a World Cup. Hugs, High-Fives, Fireworks and Celebrations were all around for days and weeks. Laxman and Dravid lead from the front and Harbajan.
Laxman and Dravid made those runs against one of the best bowling of all times.
This knock gives true meaning what VVS stand for very very special... VV S for Wall stand still.
That's not bad bowling, that's great footwork 😍😍
That was the genesis of Team India!!
Goosebumps just listening to them talk about it.
Ian Chappell always puts forward his analysis so clearly!!
The clarity of his thought, crispness of the words...very impressive... and he is a master story teller....I mean giving a detailed account of an incident...unmatched skill.
I was at the ground in Eden Gardens.... Its was an iconic match... This was THE MATCH of the century..the legends playing each other..
THE greatest test match India has ever played and probably will ever play.
@pradip basak bro they played it last month in gabba 😊
Dravid and Laxman.. definition of stability.. on and off the field
Probably the greatest Test Match I have ever heard of..This truly would have been the match the light the spark of Test Cricket craze in India...cause man what happened in the ground that day is truly unfathomable and special. That moment cannot be redone
Salute to rahul's modesty when he says you can bat all day but bowlers that day won us that match.
Eden Gardens - Calcutta, the best stadium in the world. Having the most sentimental yet supportive crowd!!
this must be the greatest innings top no 2 in world cricket after bradman 270 this innings against the best bowling attack comprising mcgrath warne gillespie i think no team would have played in there own backyard salim malik played an innings to save the test match 7 years prior this was match winning innings salute to very very special laxman
Bradman's 334 with 46 boundaries in Leeds in 1930 is more famous. He made 1st session: 105 runs in 153 balls
, 2nd session: 115 runs in 152 balls and 3rd session: 89 runs in 115 balls, total 309 runs in a single day.
Its bcaz they all Sachin Dravid Sairav Veeru Zahir all not want Lakshman to be more famous than them.🙄🙄😤😤
Beating that Australia is like impossible
No it wasn't. ;)
It was hard but not impossible , this test match proves it ;)
@@reinhardvanastrea4235 not only this, India that time did that very often, specially in test. at 2004 Australia tour, we even came close to win the series.
@@WSTRNS that series was tied wasn’t it?
@@ragagamer7950 yes, Steve Waugh and Katich save Australia in last day.
Still remember the test and the series and loved both the test messages and love it's signification for the Indian Cricket Team in term of the confidence that this gave us and the way that Ganguli led the team to play and this led the foundation on which India is No. 1. test nation today in 2018-2019.
Well done cricinfo for this program. My fav innigs are being considered in this. One of lara against and now VVS both against top bowling unit. Thanx cricinfo
Unbelievable, unforgettable, unimaginable, unthinkable.................the test match that goes in the books of Indian cricket as one in a thousand (can't say million, as tests are very less nowadays, even one days, as T20, the cashcow game, is being played and shown more in TV as serials)......the way VVS counterattacked along with the company of Dravid the great innovative Warne, reliable McGrath, hardworking Gillespie was absolutely fabulous.... sorry Steve Waugh.....being such a great bloke and a humanitarian..... that piece of cake was not yours.... can't forget those golden years of cricket.......absolute contest of temperament, skill, stamina, flamboyance etc.,,,,,
I remember that match, my grandma had tickets for Eden gardens and still talks about it.
I saw that match live on T.V it is the most epic test I have ever seen much better than Ashes!!!
I don't know why I have tears in my eyes while watching this
Best test match for at least India thus far in the modern era. VVS was one incredible cricketer.
Literally its once in decade match
Once in a century.
@@LamboWalker23 i said it before reaching to your comment bro, seriously, once in a lifetime match
@@amitj5916 stfu , it's not a fact. We may be wrong. We may see similar or maybe better game in future.
@@reinhardvanastrea4235 Nah No way.No way in those fucking T20 dominant Cricket.
@@reinhardvanastrea4235 It has been done ONLY twice in the entire 200+ year history of Test Cricket. I'd say darn near impossible mate.
I was given a chance to revisit the past, I would always choose to be in the eedin gardens on 14th march to vitness the marathon of VVS laxman and Rahul Dravid.
That 4th day still gives me goosebumps. Literally.
Miss the test match crowd of Eden Garden!! So much love for the game back then!
Laxman 281 probably the best knock I have seen in my life along with some of the great knocks of Brian Lara...probably this is the reason why many crickters rate Lara ahead of Tendulkar as per test matches is concerned
Laxman and dravid played a total of 134 overs. This is a remarkable stand
