Please speak to SDS/Universal/Dreamworks Animation to release their traditionally animated movies in 4k. They did a good job with Prince of Egypt. Same love needed for Spirit: Stallion of Cimmaron and others. Thanks
Any reason you heard of as to why you still cannot pre order True Lies, The Abyss or Aliens 4k on Amazon US store? Also does Aliens and Abyss 4k come with the extended editions? I pre ordered on B&N but if Amazon has it cheaper I'd love to go through them.
@iidreddiipsn4720 One movie two cuts. They both have theatrical and extended. I would also like to know why you can order from just about every major retailer but Amazon?
@iidreddiipsn4720 also,,,does anyone know what studio is releasing the abyss 4k?
Physical media is dead. Bury it.
Just as long as physical media keeps coming out I will keep getting it.
Same here! Me too! 😊🙋♀️
Aye, same here as well.😊
And you can still look to the second-handle market or online to find titles to fill out your collection.
Concrete and steel is used a lot more than brick and mortar
Well, I guess that’s a massive goodbye to Best Buy for me. The only reason I ever kept going WAS for movies because they always more variety than Walmart or Target.
Gotta buy a fridge or TV every year now lol
@@idiot_city5244i got all my appliances from lowes because it was cheaper.
Walmart has cheap tvs.
Same
Jeff, your good sense is a welcome fact. Keep up the good work. You and Heath are a refreshing addition to the utube world. Thank you.
Yep. 80% of my annual business with them was movies. Their loss.
I am disappointed though. I’d rather see Target and Walmart get out before them.
I'm from the UK and over here Physical Media is going very strong last year 2023 was it's best year with sales and people are buying more and more 4k blu rays witch is great.
What a world of difference.
I'm in Canada, wishing I could play Blu-Ray & DVDs from the U.K.
What great prices you have !
Yes Indeed I have bought a lot of 4k in the last year and live in the UK also. Plus we have the amazing second sight and arrow video exclusives as well.
UK has great 4K prices - Bullet Train steelbook is £9.99 today at Zavvi.
Same although I only have HMV in my town along with cex and a couple of independents for 2nd hand stuff. Its great that HMV prices are the same as their online store so I do a mix of both. Only got a dedicated 4k player this year and picked up about 30 4k titles whereas before I hadn't bought a brand new blu for years. 4k has really grabbed me very much like when dvd's came out.
I'm from the US and spent half of last year in the UK and went in a number of stores that had such a better selection than most of our big box stores in the US. I was tempted by a lot of the Arrow stuff that were UK exclusive.
My experience with Best Buy the last few years has been that they seem to want to do everything in their power to make you not want to give them money.
Im so happy to see physical finally coming back with more people getting into it!
Thanks for the update, Jeff! My local library rents out 4K discs for $1/week! So far they have bought every movie I've requested of them. Everyone, ask your local library too!
Wow, that's really amazing
@@robertt9342 yeah! It's been really nice. It reduces my blind buys
That's incredible. My library gets the occasional Blu-ray but it's still mainly barely watchable DVDs. 😂
My library has no charge for borrowing Blurays or DVDs, and you can take like 10 for a week. The only time you pay is if you are late to return them, but you can call or go online and extend your time for an extra week if you really want to.
They get new titles weekly, and will get anything you request too.
I bet a lot of people just don't know their library does this, I didn't for the longest time.
Great recommendation! They should get back in especially for the big titles and classics
We really need Sony or LG, somebody to release a $100 4k HDR player. That's always been the price to get the masses on board
Panasonic UB420 was pretty cheap this past Christmas season. 🎄
I will agree cheaper is always better, it’s just that for them to release a cheap 4k blue ray player, it wouldn’t be able to support most of todays blue ray formats, with Dolby vision, and Dolby Atmos, or HDR 10 and DTS:X on the disc…
I think 200 on a player is not bad. But that’s me.
Plus both game consoles are capable.
I think issue is just people love to stream and video and audio quality is not a big deal.
DVD was huge cause streaming didn’t exist.
yea i can agree that price point isn't bad, i just remember seeing $100 bluray players not that long ago, and bundles with great movies. I just don't see much intent to increase sales from big box stores at times, and that is the real issue @@dishsoap1
Can't even get people to buy a 15 dollar Blu Ray player from a thrift store. People wanna stream or watch DVDs.
My local Beat Buy’s had stopped carrying CD’s and movie’s about 5 years ago. Now it appears to be nationwide. Best Buy used to be a physical media monster…..they will be gone in 5 years, I predict.
Meanwhile in Canada… Walmart is dropping physical media in many stores, bestbuy is getting out of it, we have no target or BN.
If you have one near you, there's Sunrise Records. But yeah, kinda grim outside of small local stores.
Best Buy is still carrying movies online in Canada….even true lies, the abyss and aliens just popped up for pre order
@@DefinitiveLove . Being discontinued there too
In canada it's just amazon or best buy for time being
Sunrise and Cinema1 are still carrying physical discs, depending where you live in Canada
With my surround sound, there is noooo comparison between the physical media and streaming. I will always buy/watch physical media when I can as it sounds so much better! Thank you for this great video!!!
I wish they could release a physical version of a movie first before releasing the digital version. Like the old days. I wonder how that would affect the business model. Maybe it would help boost sales before putting it on a streaming service. They’re not making money on streaming anyway. Might as well try the old model again.
Where I live I have poor Wi Fi coverage and the only way I can watch a movie is on physical media,I'm so glad you champion it.
I keep telling my friends and family, I work for a major cable company here in Texas. I tell them, then yes you stream your movies but when the cable goes out or they pull a movie from their platform, what then???
I learned that the hard way
The ending of Leave the World Behind proves the importance of Physical Media. LOVED that part
Sadly our Walmarts in Canada has changed this week. They’re reducing the footprint by 75%. Sad times really.
Physical media came in clutch yesterday when my internet service was out for almost 24 hours which basically turned my smart tv into a dumb tv and my cable box into a brick. Cell reception was also rarely at 2 bars even though I pay for premium 5G+ service. It’s safe to say for rural areas physical media is still an option that shouldn’t go away anytime soon. Thanks for keeping us informed Jeff.
I illegally downloaded movies back in 2011 and was obsessed. I have a terabyte hard drive with probably 1000 movies that I bring out occasionally in those no internet situations. They aren’t all the best quality but at least I have them when needed.
A freak storm knocked out power to my area for almost a week and internet for almost 2 1/2 weeks so my blu-ray library came in handy for everyone I know.
Exactly. I bring my physical discs whenever I rent a cabin for the weekend. Internet service in this area sucks big time. It’s always buffering.
Bro i live in the city and my Internet and phone collection sucks
Best Buy getting out of the physical media game is really unfortunate. They always had good prices and I would much rather go to Best Buy than go to Walmart. Now that they are dropping Blu-Rays, I have no reason to go to Best Buy anymore. Aside from a few very rare exceptions, movie purchases are the only reason that I've gone to Best Buy for the last 10 years.
Dido!
Someone pulled the wrong call, it's been always my thoughts. Something was cooking, likewise inside Disney but one got it wrong the other got it right.
@@mataiguana5 It's quite sad, really. I really remember going to Best Buy in the late 2000s and the movie section was huge. But over time it has been slowly whittled down until, apparently, now it will be completely nonexistent. I hate seeing something I love just die off like that.
Been collecting for years now, have over 1700 Blu-ray/4K movies, will continue to purchase remasters and new releases as long as they fit my need
Thank God I live within 20 minutes of a Bullmoose. There's something about browsing for physical media in person that's just better than shopping online.
Being on a shelf is better than being online bc films can be difficult to find online
Same here, Bull Moose has tons of movies, and tv shows on physical media and a much better variety than any of the big box stores currently have.
I want to my Walmart today and it was a disgrace. In a 40 mile radius, only one store had the steelbook section. My fear is that with Walmart most of us will be stuck with their preorders and shipping. My Walmart physical media section doesn’t even have the one row of movies. Point is that Walmart is very inconsistent from store to store. This concerns me. I should not have to drive past 10 Walmart stores to get to the store that has a proper physical media section.
After purchasing a brand new Sony 4K Blu-ray player, I decided to purchase 4K discs at Best Buy and Target. I was shocked how small the DVD/Blu-ray section was, almost to non-existent. Now, I have to purchase online…very sad to discover this. I really hope physical media will have a comeback, because watching 4K discs is so much more richer and satisfying to view than streaming.
My biggest problem with Walmart is that my Walmart has very little blu-ray and 4k titles, instead opting for a wide variety of DVD's. The only option I have for instant gratification is to drive one hour into the nearest large city to purchase there. It's very frustrating.
Do you think physical media could benefit from lower, regular prices? I’ve noticed a lot of older movies that are still in print are often more expensive than some other more recent releases.
Good question. Probably, yes, but these prices are historically low. Laserdiscs would sell for $50 in the 90s. That’s like $100 in today’s money. So the price is pretty good for a lot of stuff.
I think if they can get new releases to sit at 15/20/25 for DVD/Blu-ray/4K, that’s a sweet spot.
I think that's because the older stuff is often better and in demand. So many poor new titles.
@@JeffRauseo . The laser disc is a bad example, those were far more expensive to produce than even a low production run niche title. VHS were less expensive than those early on and this cost much more to manufacture too.
I do agree with you new release pricing. I do think old 4K should be more regularly found between $10-15.
@@JeffRauseoexactly. People tend to forget that VHS originally sold for $99 and that's why rental stores popped up.
@jeremydrew1227 Good point. I remember wanting my own copy of Terminator 2. And the asking price was $99.99. This is before it became readily available in retail stores. Pretty odd that the studios didn't think people would want to own their own copy.
Just want to say, I’m really glad I found your channel. I had been collecting physical media up u till about 2016(mainly due to a change in my living situation) Stopped for a while, and around summer 2023 started getting back into it. It’s been really cool seeing how the community has shifted in the just 7 years. I’ve mostly been buying from boutique labels(my favorites been arrow and criterion). I’ve been trying to keep up with releases and online stores, and your channel has been a great resource on seeing how this market and community continues to shift. Keep up the great work!
I enjoyed Black Friday sales of Movies at Best Buy 😢
*I wouldn’t count on Walmart.* My local Walmarts have _significantly_ reduced their physical movie selection. The $5 bins are completely gone & the movie aisle, which was both sides, has been consolidated down to a single side of that aisle. Target had a small section that’s been reduced to an end cap. Online & used stores might be the only places going forward.
I think with Walmart it just totally depends on each location. I do Uber so I'm around my city a ton and stop at a lot of them to check out the movies and some have an insane amount of isles packed and with multiple $5 bins, and some have basically none.
@idiot_city5244 it is based on location
We have a huge section at my local Wal-Mart
More $5 bins then ever
Dvd, bluray,4K,CD, Vinyl, video games etc
Are you complaining about only having 75/100 options at any one time at walmart?
My Walmart isn’t too bad. It has like 3 solid rows and a few small shelves for movies. There’s no $5 bins, but there’s some cheap movie bundles as cheap as $10.
It's weird that Target now has more books than movies lol and it's in the electronics section too. At least all the ones near me. I love books but it's just odd to see, most are either kid books or romance novels too lol. Odd times
dont forget about manga now.
I love your channel- maybe my all-time favorite! You are never short on words and you deliver it in an interesting and thorough way! Thanks for all you do!!
Thanks Jeff. Good information, some of which I hadn't about heard yet. Appreciate it.
I really want these big box stores like Walmart and especially Target to continue selling physical media in their stores for at least new releases! I went to Target in December, they still have one aisle of DVD/Blu Rays, but no more 4K blu rays, which I understand they’re not selling well at Target stores. They should focus on regular Blu rays and DVD combo packs, because those are selling lots of copies to justify new releases.
Great update!!! Thanks for the info and thanks for your hard work and advocacy 🙏🙏🙏
Here in the uk we have a Film and Music outlet called HMV. The one at Bluewater shopping mall is always busy and popular. There were a lot more HMVs scattered around the country unfortunately a lot shut down but the ones we have left thrive. Also we have a second hand electronics store called CEX, some of the films you can pick up there is crazy, I’ve picked up some rare gems on blu ray
Yes, I had a cex & hmv day in lakeside yesterday,
HMV have a large stock of 4k discs, hope they continue
My HMV has just reduced their 4K section and put them out with just white spine covers to take to the till. Asked today why? was told shoplifting ............ great kill browsing. GET BETTER SECURITY OR MOVE IT NEARER THE COUNTER NOT STUCK IN THE CORNER. As you can guess....... bit pissed off.
Thanks for sharing all the information with us all.
Jeff, I consider your channel a valuable resource when I need an honest opinion buying movies. I have been debating if I should sell my old DVD and CD collections. The issues with not owning the content and the ongoing upheaval in the entertainment industry has made my decision easier. Now I only buy movies when I want to upgrade to Blu ray or 4K.
I appreciate your reviews since they help narrow down the decision making process. It's difficult to wade through all of the marketing and hype sometimes. Thanks again.
Thanks for the update
My Walmart here in Canada has already cut their physical media section to basically nothing
I’ve been having a blast collecting films the last few years. Your channel inspired me to do it. And this video rocks. Thanks for making it.
Thank you for the informative update. Because streaming services are pushing into adding advertisements to their screenings, it will make it possible for movie lovers to buy more physical media, Ironically, streaming services were born against TV ad programming based on having screening free of advertising; Phephas, screening services are giving themselves gunshots in the foot.
They want to push physical media sales but keep raising the prices. 4 X 4k blu rays used to cost me £40-50. Now they are £24.99 each. 4 X 4K blu rays now cost £100. They need to lower prices to continue to attract an audience.
I wonder what Mark up they make on a 4k disc
Great info Jeff!!!
all my local Walmarts’ physical media sections are a MESS with torn slips, dented steelbooks, and scratched covers. I don’t trust Walmart much when it comes to discs
Thanks Jeff for all you do for the Physical media community we really appreciate it and you for doing it..
Man, the Barnes and Noble near me just got rid of their physical media section. Happy to hear Walmart will be picking up the Best Buy slack.
There are so many awesome 4K movies coming out over the next few months! I have quite a few preorders lined up; it's going to be great.
Thank you for always keeping us informed all the way! Nothing will ever replace physical media! ✌️
This is interesting Jeff in the UK we only really have HMV as the main bricks and morter location that sells blu ray 4k etc and the new release date is on a Monday so it will be interesting to see if they go bi weekly also.
I do think that physical media is getting more recognized of late so let's hope it has a proper resurgence like vinyl.
I’m in the uk the physical media situation at the moment reminds me of when vinyl was stopped and people missed it so it’s comeback and has a big following here I’m loving all the special editions at the moment you can see they have spent time and put a lot of love into the restorations not only giving us atmos and dts x soundtracks but on some titles the original theatre tracks so we get to hear it how it would of sounded and I also love the extras you get like postcards scripts original poster art etc
Very helpful video. Thanks for the specific information.
Thanks for everything your doing pushing physical media and sounds good news going forward!
I just wanted to say thanks so much Jeff for the whatnot order! The bonus goodies were awesome !
Al
Thanks Jeff so much for the update and for keeping us collectors and movie lovers in the know! You were the first person I subscribed to quite a few years ago and I have been enjoying all your content over the years. You are a hard worker and deserve all the notoriety and accolades that you are and have been receiving! Physical media is alive and kicking thanks to you and others like you out there and to all of us diehard collectors and cinema fanatics! From the mom and pops stores to the Blockbuster and Hollywood Video stops to the Redbox days to the Best Buy and brick and mortar stores to the internet, physical media for life!!
Thanks for these updates. I'm happy that physical media is still moving forward. And I don't mind that they'll be releasing biweekly.
I also saw Walmart prepping a few racks for their physical media. They're having a line of steelbooks coming in.
I now have no reason to go into Best Buy.
Thank you for this video.
Great video! Very helpful!
Here in The Netherlands, they decreased a lot of physical media for movies and series. In Media Markt stores they sold a lot of movies and series on blu ray, 4K and DVD, but since 2021 I believe they scaled it down! Now their is only a small department for physical media😢😢. For the last 10 years, a lot of stores have disappeared that sold physical Media. Media Markt is at least the only store nowadays here that sell physical media.
What do I miss the old glory days of the blu ray films and series since the coming of the PS3.
Thanks for the info man, you’ve been in the game a long time it’s good to see you getting your props.
Informative. Thanks.
This is great news! Now if only they would open another pressing plant and have better quality control that would be amazing. That way myself and other wouldn't have to deal with regularly scratched discs. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction. Thanks for the update Jeff!
I have streaming services for everyday watching. But started collecting physical media for our friday night movie or when we really want to sit down and enjoy a movie. Ive been upgrading my home setup since finding your youtube videos, and now my wife and i never go to the movies. We just wait for the 4k and enjoy it at home. No stranger texting or chewing loud ruing our movie.
Great discussion! Any updates on Walmart & SDS? I know several months ago it was said that Walmart was interested in taking over SDS so they can cut their costs, but have not heard anything since.
Please ask these folks why they're not releasing any titles on 3DBD via MOD - zero upfront investment, basically pure profit. There's a serious niche there that is being entirely ignored aside from Disney (who themselves are mostly ignoring it still too!)
I mean the switching to release every fortnight I think is the move to give stuff more time for titles to clear shelves and for people to get it in time with their paycheck’s. I don’t know outside of the US, but here people typically get paid every two weeks.
Thank you for sharing. Also, my biggest concern it's the way Walmart has been shipping their steelbooks. They have been using plastic white envelopes, which its not good at all.
I finally got a really nice 4k qled and one of the first things I bought after a good soundbar, was a 4k blu ray player. I’m excited to get copies of my favorite movies and tv shows and be able to enjoy them in 4K and not have to worry if they’re on a streaming service. But I still stream shows that I like as well.
I'm glad I was able to put expanding my collection on hold until I got my new 85-inch Sony Bravia XR85X90CL 4K UHD TV without the format disappearing. I have the TV, am learning more about how to use it with 4K Blu-rays, and enjoying every moment of the journey. I just started adding to my collection again and am glad I'll still have plenty of opportunity to continue doing so.
My local Walmart mostly has dvds still which is disappointing but hopefully that changes this year. Also I am however impressed by the amount of steelbooks they have on their website and they’re significantly lower priced than the same ones were at Best Buy. So going forward this whole Best Buy dropping out thing is just gonna save us all money.
I don’t give a shit about going to the store to pick up media, I order from Amazon. I just want physical media I don’t give a fuck if the stores are selling it or not just sell it somewhere best be online.
Nice to see I won't have to get my Blu-rays from Amazon from now on. I like going into the store and browsing.
My local Walmart's physical media display is pretty terrible. I hope they add more 4K media
Not just physical media but alot of stuff at Bestbuy is changing. I just went to my local one over the weekend and they literally had more movies than bluetooth speakers lmao. The audio aisle was completely baron aside from the big party speakers.
I can't imagine buying my physical media from Walmart. The occasional find, sure, but for them to be the major source of physical media is disheartening. Have you seen how their physical media is treated and mulled over by customers? Not well. It's manhandled so much that corners are dented, scratches are often on the slip cases, and you can hear the discs bouncing around the inside of the case. Good luck finding acceptable copies of media there.
Great video. Thanks! Do you think one should pick up a “spare” 4K player at this point? There only seems to be 2-3 manufacturers left. Can I find a Sony or Panasonic a year or two from now? Their models date back some 5-6 years now.
To be fair, your argument "to use both" so you can "have the best experience" is a very reasonable.
However, a reason why **I** don't put my money to streaming services and I am "one sided" because I want to keep physical media alive AND I believe a law should be passed for these major publishers to sell physical media
I think Best Buy is making a big mistake by removing all physical media, imo...Now all people will go to Walmart to buy their bds/4ks, steelbooks, etc.
Congrats on getting the notoriety you deserve. You work hard and have the knowledge. I can’t believe you are 30! I mean, this isn’t bout your looks at all. It is all about the way you explain and you dive deep into topics. Good to see someone I’ve followed for a while getting their dues with all these outlets. U da man
I appreciate you
Notoriety means being well known for some bad quality or bad action…
As a best buy employee upset about the loss of physical media. I talked to some people about what's happening and they said that they "rent" their movies until bought, and whatever goes unsold will go back to the distribution center until mid May/June for online purchases then after May/June they're out of the game
Are new releases going to be released every other Tuesday or will they still be released each Tuesday (able to buy online - amazon, b&n online, etc) but just not stocked on the shelves until every other Tuesday?
I was watching your video on Jurassic Park.
Sadly we may never get a new scan of the movie or a definitive edition with deleted scenes because of the fire that happened at Universal Studios that destroyed tons of master tapes.
But hey, I’m still waiting for the original version of Event Horizon to be found.
So here’s hoping. 🤘🤞🖖
My opinion stands as it did years ago. The quality of disc is so much better than streaming. You lose so much and what you get isn’t what you saw in the theater. Plus the obvious benefit of not needing internet or a paid subscription to enjoy them
I’ll believe it when I see it with Wal Mart. My local WM is nothing but bare shelves in the physical media sections.
Here in the UK i went to a Tesco superstore and they didn't have a single DVD or blu ray for sale. Not even a section for video games. I was very disappointed
I’m also in the UK and somehow found myself in a big WH Smith recently for the first time in years, and I remembered they used to have a decent physical media section. Not anymore - one small shelf of DVDs, not even blu rays and certainly not 4K. In terms of physical shops to browse in for physical media in the UK, it’s all about HMV now.
Hell yeah...physical media is the FUTURE!
Thank you for the video very informative.i still love buying physical media blu rays and 4k's of some of my favorite movies i just upgraded end of days to blu ray .
Apparently, HMV might return to Canada inside Toys R Us stores as their own sections inside those stores. If they do come back, they will definitely back physical media and will probably become one of Canada’s largest physical media retailers in a very short amount of time.
Isn't HMv just another brand for sunrise records? They also have a third brand too. Still interesting about the TotsRUS stores. I don't believe America has those anymore.
Don't I wish. But I'll have to wait til I hear more.
Doubt this will happen considering Toys r Us got out of selling even video games. And yes, Sunrise bought up everything HMV had years back. However, their prices can't come close to Amazon. Brick and mortar in Canada is unlikely to be strong any time soon unless it returns to the days of how Future Shop handled it.
I like when dvd/blu ray comes out and has a digital version with it too.
Not to mention physical media seems like it’s a little more sustainable for the environment than streaming. Yes, it takes oil to produce them but the Internet has files in different systems resulting in companies needing to cool down them using fans.
I'm noticing a lot of retailers dropping Physical media now. Walmart, Target, now Best buy. I collect steelbooks and it's just getting thin.
But what about the longer term?
Will formats change, what about players?
Will software be available to use CPs whan dedicated players are no longer available?
I've already go thousands of DVD-Rs I need to find a player for.
Thank you Jeff for this information because physical media needs a lot of support and more important in this day and age.. I think the shift of physical media is going more positive is the BS of streaming services that they are doing and with physical media, we can have special features to watch after watching the film while streaming services do not have. I am optimistic with Jeff and hope physical media survive this year
The problem with Walmart as a local brick and mortar spot for purchases is that none of them are consistent. You have to get employees that actually care and understand the importance of these sections to really have a good experience/physical media relationship with the Walmart. For me specifically, I have to travel 2 hours to get to a Walmart that has that Steelbook display stocked and displayed. I thought it was, “let the 7 Walmarts around me catch up”. Here we are 6 months post this display first becoming known and none of them have it nor are there any signs of it ever coming. More online shopping equates to sad days a coming.
I know that’s the Jaws Funko over your shoulder but it low key looks like you 😂
The only movie I've seen walmart have the bluray and 4k for in months was Trolls. I can't find any of the movies actually on my list, and online shopping is always a gamble.
I'm visiting NYC in a few weeks from the UK and am wondering if anyone knows of any good places that still stick 4K blu rays? I'm looking to save on a few import fees 😂
There were news reports a few months back that Walmart wanted to buy SDS from Universal & WB to coordinate physical media distribution from all the studios. Is that happening?
Well not sure about all Walmarts, but the one closest to me had the largest media section anywhere around until last fall, now it's been reduced to almost nothing. Hard to imagine they're going to just put it all back again :(
Great recap
Been following the release of Trick or Treat but nothing new has came up. According to Vinegar a 4k was expected late 2023 early 2024, but have not found any updates.
I may have said this before but the best buy i go too, they still have 3 full sections for movies, I will check with the manager to see if they will this
