    A lot of people will probably mention this, but the GameCube version of Budokai 1 has Cel Shaded visuals. Really like this game, and honestly the story cutscenes here were the best 3D rendition of the series until probably Kakarot.

    This was actually the first time I ever heard the Funimation cast since I'd grown up with the Ocean cast and the latter would actually make a comeback when AB Groupe started doing stuff post-Freiza with Ocean again (and they did go back and dubbed the stuff that Ocean never did like the Freiza arc)
    Re the color of the Kamehamaha: That's actually technically accurate to the Full Color Edition of the manga believe it or not. As for Cell's being blue, artistic liberties perhaps? Cell is also supposed to be yellow so there is that.

    Got all 3 of the Budokai games. Real fun back in the day. When gaming was loads fun and you had options.
    Plus the price back then for games is sorely missed. Still have the price sticker on my copy of 2 when I got it for $19.99. $20 bucks for a major title in 03.
    What times we live in. Hahaha

    It may be basic now but this still was one of the first games to really feel like you were watching the anime and that was cool if you did not have adult swim yet. And I do feel that the small amount of what if's did lead to Xenoverse down the line. And since your a mecha fan any chance you might cover any old Gundam games?

    P.S. I know it's not exactly mecha or anime related, but I'd be interested on your take of story driven games like Remedy or FromSoft games

    I'd definitely be down to see you review the A.C.E. (Another Century's Episode) series, especially since I'm reminded by Budokai of how barebones some aspects of the first game are, plus it's a mecha TPS!

    I was also able to unlock Great Saiyaman in Budokai. I'd love to see you review Budokai 2 & 3, as well as the Tenkaichi games. I'd like to hear your opinion on the Tenkaichi games. As strange as it sounds, those games got me back into fighting games. I fell out of the loop when Street Fighter III came out.

    OK I love the cuts of your gameplay from your other channel because it makes it feel like a fun experience lol. This game holds a special place in my heart and while I still say that the third game is the best in this series, this one definitely has the best story mode out of all the dragon ball Z games even if it is just repeating the same arcs over and over again. Great job with this and can't wait for you to talk about the sequel that has a board game as its story mode.

    I loved this game as a kid! I liked the 3D models more than what budokai 2 had to offer. I liked all the things they added in budokai 2 but it felt like 1 step forward and 2 steps back. Budokai 3 was a masterpiece and has aged pretty well.

    Budokai 1s visual design is kinda underrated. For all its faults it definitely still looks pretty sick.
    I think the final versions of the original Budokai series shows crazy potential for a deep fighting game. Shin budokai is just insane, which is why Im kinda disappointed they opted for Tenkaichi to get a follow up cause I feel like Xenoverse did that already.
    I dont think they even realize how hype a Budokai 4 or Shin Budokai 3 reveal would be.

    "they didn't include anything after Cell because western audiences we're not familiar with it"
    Most of the non-USA western hemisphere having watched DBZ back in the 90s makes that theory fun.

  • @Lanhalt2
    @Lanhalt2 5 месяцев назад

    I was goiing to make a comment why "I guess they didn't include that include that content because western audience weren't familiar with it" is wrong, and it's just the US that got a super late, and a lot of countries in the west got DBZ long before that, but while checking it, I realised even country like Italia or countries from South Amererica, where some animes were super popular from very early on rarely got more than a very limited run before 99/the early 2000. Coming from French talking country that had access to DB since 88 and DBZ since 90, this wild to me. It seems the only other dub that got a full dub from the early 90's is the european spanish version.
    For a long while I wondered why I saw so many people on the internet talking about DBZ and Pokémon being from the same generation, but I guess that's it.
    And concerning the other budokai, I would really advice you Budokai Tenkaichi 3. It was still considered as the best DBZ game until FighterZ, and it would be interesting to put side to side a DBZ fighting game from early and late PS2 life.

  • @PlanOrdo
    @PlanOrdo 5 месяцев назад

    The deal with Cell's voice is a problem that plagued the dub for many of the DBZ fighting games. In Japanese Cell never had different voices for his forms. So when they programmed the game(s), Cell only had one voice slot. And thats why the different forms of Cell always use the first form for grunts/attack/etc. IIRC, I think the win quotes dont have this issue? Not entirely sure on the last part.

    I was in college working at a Strawberries store (now TWE) and the day this came out i was off and my manager was so annoyed with me calling in every 30 minutes asking if ups had shown up yet so I could come in and get my copy. I was SOOOOO into dbz at this time. It was fairly close to when I'd seen the cell saga on adult swim and I lost my mind on release day. Fairly certain it was the most excited I'd been about a video game ever. Even modern warfare 2 with their version of halo sticky grenades (semtex) is a distant second place. I didn't leave my my TV other than a pee break for at least 2 days. Underwhelming? Yeah definitely a little bit but still it was a legit DBZ game and I could turn ssj 2 and whoop some ass. This was a flawed diamond for sure

    Wouldn't necessarily agree that Popo is an "overt reference to a racial stereotype", as that implies an intention I doubt Toriyama consciously had. I might say "unfortunate coincidence".

  • @redgrave4492
    @redgrave4492 5 месяцев назад

    I'd be interested to see you cover the sequels too. For the longest time I assumed the game didn't have an English dub, here in the PAL region they didn't include it for this game and Super DragonBall Z.

    About Cell's voice: the game only had one voice pack for Cell because his voice never changes between forms in the original Japanese version.

    Ah, the issue with Mr. Popo. A Japanese story (Manga and Anime) which based a side character off of a little known deity from India, is translated for a "Western" (US) audience and then people have problems with it because of things from their past.
    Oh, how I love our education system here in the States. Not everything that is created outside of nation is a reflection of our problems, issues or past.
    Yes, I get how Mr. Popo on first viewing could be seen as a R word kind of thing. However, it could lead to a little research and then a better understanding of another nations history and religious beliefs from the past.

    • @Retcon404

    • @esbenm6544
      @esbenm6544 5 месяцев назад +4

      Yeah no. This is just cope. It seems you're the one making assumptions on Japan's past. You think they never heard of this? Never read Tintin in the Congo? This is Japan in the 90s, not the 40's.

    • @Winterydee
      @Winterydee 5 месяцев назад

      @esbenm6544 - Mr. Popo is dressed in a Indian style of clothing and Kami's Lookout, where Mr. Popo lives, is designed with Indian style buildings. Also, Kami's Lookout in Japanese translates into "God's Temple" and Mr. Popo is sent there from another plane of existence to assist Kami.
      But call it cope and say that assumptions are being made.

    • @esbenm6544
      @esbenm6544 5 месяцев назад

      @@Winterydee So? This was not the sum total of their cultural understanding of the world. Being from Asia doesn't make a Japanese person naturally better suited to interpret Indian mythology in a way that is beyond reproach. You might want to consider where this tendency of cultural essentialization stems from.
