- We spend the day at the incredible Hollywood Costume exhibition currently on display at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles! Adam Savage explores the gallery with his friend and exhibit curator Deborah Nadoolman Landis--the designer of Indiana Jones' iconic costume. They discuss the role of the costume design in cinematic storytelling and the wonderful stories behind some of the 150 costumes on display.

Thanks to Deborah Nadoolman Landis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for this amazing opportunity - Наука
Most of us will never be this passionate about anything in our lives- nothing we can fulfill anyways, and definitely not our jobs. This made me really happy to watch though, I wish I'd be able to see this exhibit!
> _Most of us will never be this passionate about anything in our lives_
That's just sad. :(
Now I value my obsessions.
o_O Oh don't get me wrong, I have several things that really make me enthused- but its either just hobbies or general interests, which as of now isn't anything I can do for a living or to the extent I'd like. Someday though, some day the hard work will pay off. :)
I could listen to her talk about costumes all day.
she's enthusiastic about them. What's not to like??
I agree, but man she gave me anxiety by what a 'close talker' she is -- you could see Adam trying to balance himself or establish his space a couple of times because she just gets closer and closer as she gets more excited.
maybe she just had stale coffee breath :P
It's wonderful to see this women come alive while talking to somebody who "gets" what she's done. Think about your job at work. When you run into somebody outside your office/place of business you feel a instant connection with them if they are in the same line of work. You have a deeper level of understanding of that person than somebody who doesn't. That connection makes you open up more, and can be more rewarding that someone who doesn't share that connection. What a great piece, thanks from bringing it to us.
It's funny because when Deborah was talking about her making the Indy costume for the DVD Behind the Scenes of Raiders, she comes off as rather annoying. But the truth is that there wasn't enough time for you to get to know her, which I feel is what this video does so well. You get to know her and discover her passion for costume design, and I'm all the better for it.
"Where do all these mannequins end up after this?"
Translation: "Can I have one?"
LOL, that's so totally Adam!
It's inspiring to see someone so full of life and with so much passion for her work.
lol Adam and that lady are soulmates. They are both geeks and so passionate and excited about their profession they both can't function properly at times. XD
2:18
Lol yeah theyre both so high strung and excited XD
Lol she's married to John landis
I love this woman! She has so much passion and I love hearing what she has to say about things!
Wow, this was fantastic. Just a video of two people having a very interesting conversation. Not an interview or anything, just two people geeking out over something they love. Felt like only 10 minutes.
Great video! Deborah's passion just makes it that much better. If she gave me a personal tour like that, I'd fly from Canada just to see it.
She is so passionate. Its a good thing to see someone so passionate about their work!
One geek geeking out to another geek. Beautiful!
Adam...You really need a series that just focus's on the stories behind the things that make movies happen. The "we get in the head of the......." and pick your behind the scenes designer/craftsman/artist d'jor . The insight into why things are chosen in each detail really adds a color to the image of what we know and takes it to a whole new level. Thanks Adam.
Had no idea this video was posted so many years ago and this comment is 6 years old but YES this needs to be done by SOMEONE on RUclips! I could never get enough behind the scenes/making of documentaries when i was a kid growing up. Those were and still are my favorite things to research and find out about after watching a movie that I love. There needs to be so much more documentation of the making of the movies (especially before it becomes all digital with CGI)
Just seeing this for the first time. I'm surprised how emotional I feel at this end of it. Wonderfully shot and edited to allow Deborah and Adam to tell their stories about costumes and designers.
Truly a magical experience. Anyone complaining has never felt a passion to create. Ironically, a lot of people are being critical of her age or the background noise, but as she says, films aren't a visual-based medium, but a story-based medium. Likewise, what makes this video shine are the stories behind every costume, behind every scratch and tear - the story of passion. If you are focusing on her age or the way she talks, then you aren't paying close enough attention.
This is amazing. I loved how casual this Tested video feels. Nothing feels canned, just walking through and discussing an amazing exhibit.
Her passion and pure excitement for her chosen career alone makes this video worth watching. The cool facts make it even better.
Deborah Nadoolman Landis' passion for costumes and attention to detail is just astounding. I could listen to her talk about her experiences all day. Excellent video, thank you for taking us along on the journey! Just fantastic.
This was such a treat to watch. Thank you for giving such care and run time to this subject, and letting Deborah guide the video. How often do you get to hear the thought process behind something like this exhibit? Fantastic video.
Adam: "Harrison Ford is actually my size. Like 5'10"."
Deborah: "...No. 6'2"..."
Adam: "...oh...😔"
Adam is so crushed by this. He obviously has some odd infatuation with Harrison Ford because he (proudly) mentions this same thing in another video (real Blade Runner pistol video). He says something like "Actually, Harrison and I are the EXACT SAME SIZE! Same jacket size, waist, hat, everything! Pretty neat!"
+Wash_Your_Fruits In the Blade Runner pistol video he says "Actually, We are almost the exact same size. Jacket. Hat, etc". He says it when the guy shows him where they shaved a piece of the grip off to better fit Harrison Fords hand. Adam grips it and says the above quote. He mentions it in a few other videos as well.
Well Ford was never 6'2". In his prime he just cracked 6', and everyone in Hollywood embellishes a good 2 inches (at least). But these days Ford is definitely in the 5'10" range, and Adam had good reason to say that - they met at some event a few years ago and you can see in photos that they are definitely the same height.
Thank you so much, this was extremely informative and thought provoking. Mrs. Nadoolman-Landis has exceptional stories. You can really hear the passion for the work, love, and thought put into costume design from both the curator and Mr. Savage. Thank you Mr Savage!
I found this fascinating, thank you for posting it. The ladies passion for what she does is so tangible which I love, but I also found it so interesting to hear just how much thought goes into setting something like this up & from how things are presented to what information is shared. As someone that loves museums on pretty much any subject, I never realized just how much care went into the presentations.
Never actually thought about how much time and effort is used in costumes, and how it's a art form all on its own, New found appreciation for costume designers.
That is a LOT of passion, wonderful to see.
What a wonderful exhibition. I am particularly in love with how she describes the music being synced with pictures and where the inspiration came from. My dad worked at Disneyland, he and his friend Larry Estrin designed the click syncing for The Main Street Electrical Parade. So, in away my dad’s work helped inspire yours.
This Lady is awesome. So much love and enthusiasm for what she does.
She is definitely a very good choice for curating this exhibit and Adam is priviliged to have gotten this tour. Thanks for sharing this experience
I loved every second of this. It's so beautiful to watch and listen to someone who has dedicated their life to a craft. And after all these years, still talk about it like their just starting. Both of them are truly amazing people.
That was seriously one of the coolest tours and conversations I have ever seen. Goes straight to the top 5 of my All time favorite tested videos I watched it twice it was so good. Seeing her passion for the detail of the costume design in evidence here brought literal tears to my eyes. A national treasure. Thank you :-)
I absolutely love whenever Deborah is included in special features/behind the scenes. I think the first time I remember seeing her was for the Indy box set. Her cadence and love for her medium make her fascinating to listen to.
This was freakin' awesome!! So many beautiful pieces and I loved hearing the stories behind them. Thank you for sharing this, I'd love to see more! :)
I love how passionate Deborah was. You can tell from the way she talks that she absolutely loves her job, and I for one actually enjoyed the video because of it.
What an amazing tour, Deborah is just fabulous. Can't rate this video high enough, Thank you.
What a fantastic video. I could listen to her talk about the exhibit all day. Thanks for doing this.
Maybe the best video yet on Tested guys! Passion all the way through! Adam please keep making video's like this one!
What a fascinating and passionate lady. I could listen to her talk about costumes for hours. Great video. Thanks Adam and Professor Landis.
Great exhibit - thanks for sharing this. I love it when Adam's friends in the industry show up on the channel, and Deborah was just full of interesting details about so many of these costumes.
I just loved how passionate Adam and Deborah were about the costumes throughout the whole video. It's so great seeing two people with so much enthusiasm for their art sharing their stories
I'm captivated by this!!!!! I'm a costume designer and illustrator myself so this just makes me so so happy!!!! Devastated i didn't get to see this 😭😭😭😭😭
This really made me realize how much a costume designer contributes to the movie. Really cool video and cool exhibition. Wish I could go
So incredibly AWESOME!!! This has now become one of the greatest showings and stories of old and great current Hollywood. Thank You for sharing it with us. I just wish I would have fallen on this video when the display was actually open. I would have been there in a heart beat to see some of those, and because of their obscurity, the likelihood of all those going on display again is probably slim to none. It's so sad how artifacts of some of the greatest stories ever told can end up in the corner of a garage completely forgotten about for decades and decades, if not longer.
Fantastic! Thank you for making these kind of videos
The exhibition is incredible and really appears fully alive and magical, but to me even more fascinating is this brilliant, captivating woman who is so passionate and inspiring and so dedicated to what she does! I would just hug her the way Adam did!
I love when people are passionate about what they do and they have stories to tell.
To hear about all kinds of different things I had no knowledge of and learn about them are one of my favorite things.
These days it is almost impossible to find on TV, but it's right here on RUclips.
I like this woman. She seems enthusiastic.
the costumes in films are one of my absolute favorite things about a movie.
this was such a joy to watch!
It is nice to see someone who is so passionate about what they do. So passionate about the little details, their contribution is so often overlooked.
You guys did a great job on this. The exhibit was great and Deborah Landis was inspiring to listen to. Adam asked all the right questions and was, as always, truly interested and engaged. Also, the cameraman (or woman) was excellent.
Adam and Deborah's nerdy passion for costumes invigorates me and calls me to listen to every story about those costumes.
Deborah and Adam's commentary was very interesting here giving these costumes second life. Nice work by Joey as well.
I think I need this to be reshot as a hour+ long walk-through of the entire exhibit. I'd even buy it on DVD. Great stuff and the passion and excitement from Adam and Deborah is contagious!
niiice love how the curator had took the behind the scene in depth process of visual presentation for the exhibit itself thus giving the audiences bits n pieces of how a particular costume or look for the movie is achieved.
Very beautifully done! Thank you!
What an amazing amount of passion for costumes from this Lady
Thank you for taking me through the exhibit. I would never get a chance to see it for real.
Her story of how that dress was made truly brought a tear to my eye. I love the passion in this. Thank you Adam for sharing this.
I have been lucky enough to see this exhibit not once but twice. It is truly one of the most awe-inspiring things I have ever seen, surely breathtaking to anyone with an interest in film.
This is Amazing. I'm with Adam in shock that this is only a temporary exhibit. I'm surprised that with all the money invested in this exhibit that this will not be a traveling exhibit. Thanks Adam Savage, crew, and those at Tested for sharing this.
Must be one of the best videos you guys ever made. All that positive, wonderfully geeky energy makes me smile!
This is once of the best interviews I ever seen Adam do. Costumes and props are not my passion but wow do the two of you bring this alive. This video has made me happy and I wish I could go see the exhibition. Thank you Tested for posting this. Keep up the great work.
What a stunning story and video! Beautiful shooting and editing Joey!
Wonderful to see someone so passionate talk about the things they are so passionate about. A fascinating video. Thanks, Adam and Tested!
Such a great video ! I need to see this exibition !
That was the best interview and show case I have seen in a long time so awesome so so awesome thank you so much for that
this was AMAZING! I love hearing people talking about things they love
Absolutely beautiful. Such a stunning exhibit I might actually try and go with my wife on her trip to LA at the beginning of the month. Deborah Nadoolman Landis' passion for her work and the work of her colleagues radiates not only in the way she speaks about the show, but in the forethought, care, and devotion she put in.
This was exceptional, I wish I could fly to LA right now and go see it. There was a palpable energy to the way she described each piece that was overwhelming, especially when she was talking about Dorthy's dress. I know we're only a month in but this was the coolest thing I've seen so far this year. I look forward to seeing more stuff like this from Tested in the future.
What an enriching experience to be able to see and understand the design of this amazing exhibit. Thank you for sharing.
The way she talks about the costumes and the stories behind them, almost makes me jump on a plane, fly half-way around the world (from Denmark), to go watch this, just because of the love of the art that is on display ^^
But alas, I could never afford a trip like that
I absolutely love this! I would never get to go out and see it myself. So thank you for putting this experience up! I've always wanted to work in the movie industry and love seeing the inspiration behind the films almost even more than the films themselves.
A truly amazing tour and film. Thank You!
Thanks Tested (and Adam) for sharing this. It must have been amazing to talk with the designer who gave birth to your favorite costume. I really hope that the exhibit goes on tour.
Wow, what an incredible, sweet, passionate woman. Thank you for this interview. She was better than the exhibit ... and that's saying something!
Simply fantastic. The characters really truly came to life. Thank you Adam and Deborah.
This is absolutely amazing, thank you so much! She is great!
Thank you ,Tested, for posting this. I wish I could've gone to this exposition, but at least I got to see some of it through this fantastic video. :)
Deborah is a true gem, we need many more people like this in the world! Inspiring creators!
thanks for sharing guys! amazing pieces of movies history !
I have leukemia and I'm very sick at the moment. This video made my night. Thank you.
+Jonathan Doss Hope you're feeling better.
+superstormj I am actually at the moment. Thank you very much.
i hope you get well soon my friend!
This utterly FASCINATING!! I really love and respect the work of these exquisite artists!!
Thanks Adam I could never afford to go see this I appreciate you filming this for other people like me to enjoy the work of some of Hollywood’s greatest designers.
Thank you for this video, which is art in and of itself. I appreciate you sharing the beautiful costumes, and also the emotions they create.
I admire her passion for creativity. Its nice to see people share the love and labors.
I really wish I would go to see this. Thank you for sharing your trip with me. I'm even more motivated to work on my cosplay now.
I literally live across the street from this exhibit and I didn't know about it until now. Thanks, Adam. I am totally going to this!
It's so refreshing to see someone so passionate about their work.
These passionate and knowledgeable people are the best to listen to. Really jealous actually since I, like a good amount of people, are so tried of their day to day. She is curating a museum that probably makes her smile every time she glances at a display.
I love spotting all the costumes in the background. I saw Captain Miller's costume, wish you guys got a close up of it but. As an artist I can see how much work as been put into that exhibition, god damn floating faces must of taken a long time to set-up. Nice editing though.
beautifully edited and filmed piece!
I've realized one of the main reasons I love this channel is that not only do I get to go behind=the=scenes of people who have fun, unique and interesting jobs, but you also get a look at just how passionate people can be about their interests. The geekiness is infectious.
...and THEN I scroll down to see everybody is basically saying the same thing. Seriously, this lady epitomizes passion for her art.
started watching and thought i'd get bored and click away after the first couple of minutes but i was hooked! her passion for the craft is intense and so many cool stories and ideas. had to watch it all. so cool.
I love the entire Landis family. Thanks for this video, Adam.
Her passion is so contagious! What an incredible woman!
How i love to see people on fire for their subject. Had goosebumps for nearly the whole video. Simply Great. Thanks.
Wow incredible! Have to see this exhibition.
Amazing! I wish I could see the exhibit.
Wow, just wow. Passion is one of the most beautiful things in this world and Deborah is the wizard behind the curtain making the magic. Love the end shot too, Adam walking into his sunset a huge movie screen.
More like he finally got away from that crazy ol'bird and is making a break for the closest exit! Lol
Oh, i would love to listen to her all day about costumes and their back stories in each movies.
Thank you for sharing. That was very interesting and something most of us will never get to see in person.
This was awesome!, more like this please.
