Everyone Else: Right Russell, the resolution to the last series finale was a little controversial, so maybe we'll avoid the Doctor-is-Jesus subtext for a little while and-- Russell: The Doctor gets lifted into the air by ANGELS!
That's what I loved about Russel, the tonal whiplash. The silly, over the top stuff and then BOOM death. I love how many people die. It's so surreal, and I think the addition of comedy makes it even more scary somehow. Like, I couldn't listen to "In the jungle" for a while as a kid, because everytime I did, I got flashbacks to that Cybermen production line with the screams of people.
Very true. I'd rather have Voyage of the Damned than Hell Bent or Twice Upon a Time and Voyage is more entertaining than Tsuranga or Battle of Whatever You Call it.
Bad RTD was like the Star Wars prequels, complete rubbish but laughably entertaining in its barminess. Bad Moffat and Chibnall was like the Disney Sequels, competent but arse numbingly tedious.
For all the silliness in Voyage of the Damned it does pose a strong counter argument to those saying that Moffat's tenure was darker and more mature than RTD's. When you get past the panto feel of the early scenes VOTD is shockingly bleak. The Guest Companion, most of the passengers and even the goofy comic relief side characters all die horrible deaths (One of them commits suicide in a fit of grief) while the slimy, amoral Slade not only survives but profits from the carnage and remains unchanged by his ordeal. Compare that to Moffat who almost always reversed any meaningful death, or sugar coated, like Amy and Rory going back in time and living happily ever after. RTD's Who, for all its campiness was in many ways a much bleaker, more uncompromising show, where fate was cruel and bad things could happen to good people. His Doctor's had to struggle to do the right thing in an unfair universe, heavy stuff for cheery teatime entertainment.
I largely agree. I never understood the RTD hate. As a long-time fan of the OG series since the 70's, it always seemed to me he had a mostly good handle on what proportion of camp silliness, and scary darkness, was needed to emulate the overall feel of the old show, while nodding to more modern sensibility, that would appeal to a younger audience, in a world shaped by IP like Harry Potter and Twilight.
@@TheEvilChipmunk I'll have to have a new who rewatch. I always preferred Moffat, felt he brought scifi and some magic back to the show but I do feel he couldn't let most things go. Its fitting his first thing for new who ended with the famous line "this time everyone lives" or something like that. Rtds era was a bit too camp and soap like at times for me but this video has made me want to go back. Both showrunners in my opinion had a bit of an ego and could have done with someone telling them when things hadn't worked or they where taking something too far
@Rebecca Woolf yeah I agree and wonder if the two combined would have worked. When I heard about the writers room for series 11 I was excited but it didn't seem to happen. I think the show would benefit from maybe two showrunners with different ideas
Glad that you've reconsidered! It _may_ be an over-the-top-as-all-shit episode, but man is it good! It's really fun and pleasant and also really deep. Such a wonderful mixture of all manner of experiences!
This story is awful but I love it. Davies and everyone involved knew that they were making a stupid fun time and just rolled with it and the result is a hilariously entertaining and brilliantly bad story that I love despite being absolutely dreadful in every way. To me, this is a Horns of Nimon/Twin Dilemma level of so bad it's good and I adore it.
A little bit of topic but how do you feel about time flight. It's very unpopular but there's just something that makes me want to keep watching every so often. Its cheesy but sometimes you need a bit of cheese.
Honestly Stu I would pay for you, billy, John and Richard going back and rewatching some of Russel’s era because the episodes actually get so dark and edgy and it’s just fucking hilarious
It's the perfect "stuffed full of turkey and rather tipsy" episode! Sometimes at Christmas you just want to sit down and watch a fun silly romp of an episode!
Speaking of Riffs: 3:30 "He tried to kill me with a forklift!" I haven't checked but I am really curious how the Five Doctors live rifftrax went over with the Doctor Who online community. I mean if fans went into full defense mode for a negative review of VoD...I can only assume most of them haven't seen it yet.
This episode really is weird, I can't take it seriously but, I really take it seriously. I mean my God how does the man who would never show blood because kids are watching kill all these characters off? FOR GOOD!??!!?!!??
"Can't show blood." "Well, that's great Mr. Davies, how are we meant to know if people have died?" "Watch me." Seriously, there's a massive variety of deaths in the Russell Era. People aren't just shot with lasers, people are gassed, crushed, evaporated, aged to death, beheaded, drowned from the inside, eaten, sucked in giant brains and basically anything you can get away with on a PG/12 rating.
The worst episodes are when doctor who is boring. This is so stupid and ridiculous but genuinely adventurous and entertaining. That's what makes doctor who great.
Voyage of the Damned is the epitome of Russell's amazing ability to let the audience take the stupidest things in the world totally seriously. I unironically LOVE Voyage of the Damned. I can take everything seriously, but I admit I'm in a minority there. It's totally ridiculous, and I love it.
Which is one of the reasons I'm looking forward to series 14... even if it's bad (which is unlikely) it'll at least make a change from Chibnall's dry era.
Also are you watching the Christmas Carol adaptation and if so what are your thoughts. Personally I love it, but Steve Knight (the guy who adapted it) is my favourite writer and every thing he touches seems to line perfectly up with what I like and turn into fucking gold!!!
guessing the defenders of this one got into doctor who they way i did, this episode is emblematic of the kind of doctor who bullshit i fell in love with back when i was 14. in fact a lot of the "worst" episodes in this era i love just as much as the "best". really if you had fun then it was good, imo.
This is why I think RTD Who works, the ideas are batshit and ridiculous, but it’s so sincere and takes itself so seriously that it’s so genuine, and very admirable in the era of the wink-and-nudge to try and downplay silly elements, where Russell goes all in

He gave a massive cop out for all of them. River lived on in a computer Rory and Amy lived full long lives in the past. Clara can go die whenever so she's effectively immortal now The worst (as in most tragic) was Bill, who even then still remains alive in some form.

Regardless of the quality of the plot of any particular episode of the era, it's hard for fans to hate a Davies/10th story based in the story beat that made them famous. To be fair to the episode, just because they're aliens doesn't mean they wouldn't have normal dress and fancy dress. The clothes the couple are wearing do look noticeably different from what everyone else is wearing so it could be fancy dress on their planet. I think Max was on the ship to fake his death but you're right there's no reason he couldn't have been hiding somewhere else. The titanic breaking the TARDIS is silly but it did give us the Fifth Doctor meeting the Tenth Doctor so I think that plot hole was totally worth it.
