I think its weird that Chibnall decided to take the main plot points of the Pirate Planet - shrinking planets to keep and a weird monk esque group with superpowers - and yet didn't include the main appeal of the Pirate Planet, it's charm, humour and ambition.

    • @ameliawade78
      @ameliawade78 5 лет назад +12

The biggest advantage the pirate planet has over this story is that it was written by Douglas Adams. Seriously, there is no comparing Chibnal to Adams, because Adam's is a legendary writer and from what I've seen of Chibnal's work, Chibnal is a mediocre writer. Hope he proves me and others wrong in series 12, though it must be said I don't think it could beat classic who season 12 even if it was the best nu who series since the popular RTD days.

The battle was off screen. The Ux woman tells the doctor about it. Tim Shaw appeared, the Ux mistook him to be the ‘creator’ and defended him when ‘they’ came for him and there was a big battle. I assumed that is what the title of the episode refers to.

I like you found the idea of the planet trying to kill people was the best thing this episode had. Felt like a very classic who idea and if it wad classic who we would have them trying to traverse the planet to get to their goal. Yet its just thrown away Last episode for me it was the mirror world concept that I loved that could have been a full episode.

The one reaction that any TV show should avoid like the plague is boredom and apathy.
Even for most spectacular failures like a Hellbent or the End of Time there's a least a lot of fans getting angry showing that the spark to tell the showrunners to make some serious improvements are at least there to show that the fanbase has an active interest in the show they're watching.
Then we get to Chibnall's era which seems to be not bad enough to warrant any sort of outrage but also too unambitious to really shoot for the moon and achieve the high marks that some people seem to praise Series 11 for.

Series 11 had so much potential to start Doctor Who with a clean slate and come back different in tone, story-telling and character development. It was different in some respects: female Doctor, more historically-based stories, no story-arc or huge season-ending threat; but it was also a lot of the same: companions from present-day Earth, rushed endings, too many stories from the showrunner, way too much reliance on the sonic screwdriver and rather run-of-the-mill sci fi concepts. I agree that three companions was too many. The Doctor with only Graham... that would be so much better. Series 11 had some really good moments and the seeds are there for some interesting growth. The question is: what will grow from that seed?

  • @TheSkully343
    @TheSkully343 5 лет назад +7

Biggest problem with the Chibnall Era thus far is that it feels more like a majority of the episodes would've been selected as filler episodes of the RTD or Moffat Eras.
Its not so much for lack of interesting ideas so much as it is pissing about for 50 minutes while being the sort of Doctor Who episodes you put on while you're doing the laundry, paying the bills or watching on TV because there's literally nothing better to do.
Even Moffat at his most MOFFATIEST was at least able to spark something out of people whether it be immense joy or anger, bur at its core it had something going for it more so than setting up characters that only mildly develop over the course of the series as seen in Chibnall's era.
I mean you made the comparison between Yaz and Bill but at the very least I could remember the key parts of Bill's time with The Doctor and Nardole whether it be the stuff with Heather, the Monks storyline or her cyber-conversion in World Enough and Time.
Ryan's dyspraxia is completely forgotten about outside of a small reference here and there, Graham's grief over Grace only seemed to come up when it was relevant to the ongoing plot of stories like It Takes You Away and Yaz's family ended up getting more development than Yaz herself.
Even The Doctor felt more nebulous in her own series which I can understand not wanting to go the angsty route after the 12th Doctor's "Am I a good man?" story arc but Chibnall is really short changing Jodie on the 13th Doctor's characterization.
While I do think that Chibnall holds a more consistent management in terms of showrunning, his era strikes me as the kind of Series that lives and dies by its guest writers.
Russell was able to get away with most of his run due to having talent like Robert Shearman, Paul Cornell and a Steven Moffat in his prime and Moffat himself was a talent to be beheld alongside the newcomers like Jamie Mathison during his Era.
But Chibnall's only two (maybe three) writers to his name seems to be Malorie Blackman, Vinay Patel and the bugger who wrote Kerblam. And given this series Chibnall's writing track record is patchy to say the least.
It ultimately lands Series 11 in a spot that's not as terrible as the "OMG! DOCTOR WHO IS DEAD! R.I.P DOCTOR WHO!" crowd makes it out to be, But likewise isn't doing anything spectacular to wow newcomers or returning fans who wanted a fresh start after a lethal dosage of Moffat for over seven years.

      @@iain9757 Who knows.
Optimistically I'd like to think that maybe Chibnall had plans to make it something of a character arc before the whole drama over Grace's death overshadowing that.
But in reality I'm sure Chibnall just forgot about it once he started introducing the stuff with Ryan's father and probably only added in those brief lines of dyspraxia into the script just in case people brought it up.

Maybe they should have swapped the two episodes in terms of order? Put the Battle of RAK first, so that we still had a grieving Graham and Ryan motivated by revenge, but finding themselves unable to pull the trigger. That way, the two of them seeing Grace again in "It Takes You Away" would have more impact, after they have brought the villain to justice, but still find it hasn't really given them closure or resolve, at least until they find the chance to say goodbye properly, and thus the arc would feel more complete between the two. Then you have Resolution serving as a suiting epilogue as Graham or Ryan are able to help Ryan's own father come to terms with his own problems.

I loved Resolution up until the last ten minutes. The set up for the dalek was amazing. There was a really good atmosphere about it. A dalek out of its casing isn't something the series has explored more than brief flashes so it added something new. The way they destroyed the casing while it could have been paced far far better was still interesting but didn't do anything to damage the dalek brand as it was a ramshackled casing made of earth materials. My biggest problem was the sucked out into the space thing. A dalek in the Tardis is kind of a big deal and I wish they had done far more with it. Would have been better if the Doctor had landed the Tardis on Skaro some few thousand years after the dalek race had ceased to be and let it self destruct at the existential crisis of its failed prime directive.
There were some small nitpicks I had with it all the way through. One or two things that could have used just an extra sentence or two of clarification but overall it was pretty good. I do have to say though I absolutely hate the "you have a serious problem with a family member but they are about to die so you forgive them but then they don't die and the forgiveness somehow stands despite them not actually doing anything to earn it" trope. It's so terrible.

Well... Resolution is Chris Chibnall's best episode of series 11 and possibly his second best episode for Doctor Who as a whole (still think 42 is better since that took risks) but that's not saying much.
The Daleks are surprisingly done well and it serves as a better finale to series 11 (begging the question as to why it was made a New Year's Day Special at all since it works better as an episode 11) and Ryan has some development (even it's resolved too quickly) but if you didn't like series 11, this won't sway you.
I personally enjoyed it because the Daleks (or Dalek in this case) act like like Daleks again and they do new things with it.
Yes the structure is odd, there are a few weak jokes, what they did to UNIT left a bad taste in my mouth and if plot holes are make-and-break for you for some bizarre reason, there is plenty to be found. But at least Chibnall actually tried to do something different, even if it doesn't entirely work and I found this one to be the most enjoyable and memorable episode of series 11, even it wasn't the best.

Cause he's used to character driven stories not scifi. Scifi can support a character narrative but you have to know how to use it properly and Chibnall clearly doesn't. He's learning. You can see a marked improvement of how those elements are being used throughout Series 11 but he's not at the point yet where his scripts are solid. I'm just hoping he has enough time to get there before the BBC pulls the plug and gets someone else to do his job.

There was no conundrum in The Tsuranga Conundrum either.
This would have been a kind of mediocre story even if it was put in the middle of a series, where clearly belongs, because it really wasn't a series finale in any sense. They didn't have to go for an RTD style big bombastic two parter with a notable villain and a whole episode prior leading into it, but even if you're not making a large scale story it still needs to feel high stakes, which this didn't. Also, this entire series has shown the Doctor to have quite a simplistic and childish view of morality, which is briefly addressed in the episode and resolved by the Doctor saying "no u". The production design and Bradley Walsh's performance are basically the only things that made this even resemble an actual story.
Three companions didn't work in the 1980s, and only barely worked in the 1960s, and both of those eras of the show had much, much longer stories. Trying to do it only with 50 minute stories was never going to be a good idea, and only seems to have been done because neither RTD nor Moffat did it. It, like casting Jodie as The Doctor, is just another way for Chibnall to easily set his Who apart from theirs because he has no other ideas.
Next time, Chibnall realises that The Battle of Rub Mah Boobies was a shit finale, and tries to compensate by remaking Dalek as a Capaldi-era style finale. It doesn't work.

And simple silly stories aimed at 10 year olds, with over simplistic endings ...that just end. Here's a little history lesson, about the show. The very Third episode, ever to be broadcasted, was: 'The Forest Of Fear.' In that episode: 'The Doctor,' 'Ian,' 'Barabra,' and: 'Susan,' are all running through the woods, for their lives, by angry cavemen. They're cold, sweaty, and starting to go insane. During the chase, one of the cavemen hurts himself, and, despite their sanity being on the edge, the companions decide to help him, despite: 'The Doctor's,' protests. 'The Doctor,' fearing the cavemen will recapture them, once they've healed him, picks up a rock, and plans to kill the caveman. Ian stops him, only for: 'The Doctor,' to be proven right, as they're recaptured again.
It would have been a nice callback.

I kinda liked this series, but the only one written from Chibnall is The Woman Who Fell to Earth. I totally agree with you when said that you know that he could do better and honastly, the episode one (and Resolution, for me) proves so. Resolution worth being the finally, actually. The Battle seens forced when Graham is once more confronted with Grace's grief, wich dosn't made any sense because "It Takes You Away" looked a clousere to this and was better executed.
Chibnall wrote for me the most emotionals bits of Torchwood and they all worked because they where heavy and brutal and true in their way, but here, as showrunner he seens being afraid to dare kill his main character just to be on the "family-show-confortzone", one odd thing since both finaly and Resolution don't do.
And honestly, seing the reaction from the audience, he can do better things like those two episodes.

Listening to this made me realise - wasn't there a field on the planet that messed with your brain? Couldn't they have used that somehow to complicate the plot by making Graham kill Tim Shaw? Taking inspiration from a Who Chasers "Doctor Who WHAT IF" video I watched somewhat recently (ruclips.net/video/cj5lTo_76g0/видео.html), what if "The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos" ended like this:
    -------
    *Ranskoor Av Kolos*
-> Let's say Graham loses the neural inhibitor while destroying all the robots - it falls off his head because of the shockwave of the huge explosion as he says "yippee-kai-yay robots".
-> As Tim Shaw comes to face off against Graham, Graham's mind is in turmoil - faced with his wife's killer while simultaneously being attacked by the planet's neural field thingy.
-> This makes him become super conflicted between killing Tim Shaw or being the better man and sparing him.
-> As he's struggling with his inner demons, Ryan comes along trying to save his grandad and Tim Shaw turns on him.
-> Graham, in his mentally distressed state, about to lose another family member, gets completely mentally overwhelmed and suffers a lapse of judgement.
-> He breaks down and shoots Tim Shaw "you've already taken my wife, I won't let you take my grandson too" or something like that, accidentally killing him.
-> As a shocked Ryan carries Graham back to the TARDIS, the two of them discover Graham's lost his inhibitor. Ryan gives him his one instead, forgives him instantly, and the two regroup with the Doctor.
-> The Doctor, in the spur of the moment (because she's lectured Graham about this before), is less forgiving, saying that (major exposition - which is a theme for this series so I'm letting this one slide) the planet's mental forcefield thingy just brings out the worst in you, but couldn't make you do what you weren't capable of originally - so in her mind Graham is still the one who pulled the trigger, and she believes that he would've pulled the trigger even with the inhibitor still attached.
-> Argument ensues, creating tension (for once) between the members of the TARDIS team.
-> The Doctor kicks Graham out of the TARDIS. Ryan threatens to leave too, as he's accepted that Graham couldn't have controlled his actions given the circumstances, and just wants to be with whom he considers the only family member he has left. The Doctor reluctantly accepts his decision.
    *Resolution*
-> This then links into the plot of "Resolution" - they get a distress call while the Doctor is dropping Graham off, and investigate the Dalek. Most of the episode would play out as normal.
-> They drop Graham off in his flat as Ryan's dad visits.
-> Graham defends Ryan's against his dad in front of the Doctor.
-> This makes the Doctor reconsider her hasty judgement. Meanwhile, they're investigating the Dalek. Graham is still in his flat because he's still apparently kicked out.
-> Towards the end of the episode, she accepts that it was very unlikely (not impossible, but just very unlikely) that Graham would have killed Tim Shaw with the inhibitor, realising that he just cares for his family and nothing else.
-> Most of the episode progress as normal - Ryan is going about his things normally in the episode because this is his dad and it's relevant to him. Graham is still in his apartment most of the time because he's still "kicked out".
-> Aaron still gets posessed by the Dalek and Ryan is distraught. Seeing this, the Doctor realises that Ryan needs support from his only other family member.
-> While Aaron is restrained in the TARDIS, they go back to Graham's apartment and the Doctor explains the situation. Graham comes along straight away - possibly saying "not for you, Doc, but for my grandson" - confirming to the Doctor that Graham cares about his family more than anything.
-> Rest of episode plays out as normal and Doctor forgives Graham for killing Tim Shaw, accepting that had he not lost the neural inhibitor at the time, he most likely wouldn't have killed him. Graham is reaccepted back into the TARDIS.
    -------
I'm not a script writer or anything and there's probably a better way to conclude this alternative plotline, but I feel that this would at least give some meaning to the neural field which the Doctor seemed to be SOOOOO worried about (but didn't even matter in the actual plot besides some mild headaches). It would also create more tension between herself and who I believe to be the best written companion in the series (juxtaposing the whole happy-go-lucky wandering most of the series seemed to be doing), while providing a natural progression between the finale and new year special (we probably won't get to see the cosmic fireworks but hey, we didn't really see much of that anyway so no big loss there). The "Battle" of Ranskoor Av Kolos would then refer to Graham's internal battle with himself as he stands off with Tim Shaw - and shockingly loses because of unforeseen circumstances. This would also give the title "Resolution" some meaning, because it finally resolves Graham's arc after the twist in Ranskoor Av Kolos. Once again (in case anyone needs reminding) this is heavily inspired by the video I linked above so I don't think I can get full credit for the idea lol

Because, the: 'Stenza,' was set up, as a: 'Great Warrior,' and, although I haven't seen the episode, from what people said (and showed.), in reviews, he gets defeated, by a shot in the leg.

    Ah, yes.
    The Battle Of Ravishing Bollocks.
Then again, "Ravishing" implies that it was even minorly brilliant.

Sorry Chibnall, if you don´t take your villain seriously enough to credit him with a funny name, don´t expect me to

The series was just fine just fine but it's rapidly fading from my memory with each passing day which isn't a good sign.

Hope now you realise how much you took Moffat’s writing for granted!

I do think series 11 has dropped in quality since series 10, significantly.

This was the series that made me give up on New Who.

When someone rips off a major plot mechanic from The Pirate Planet and make one of the biggest jump the shark moments their big finish (the TARDIS towing the Earth) that's bad. When you think its a good idea to do it again and name check said jumping the shark moment I mean, what even...
In regard to companion numbers, three is fine but putting them through a selection of one episode stories is where alot of the problems stemmed from.

@Stubagful OH DEAR! You need to do Resolution - God help you! No joke - I watched it and, Oh jesus so many good ideas but ... WHAT THE HELL WENT WRONG?
Other than Chibnall watching Hollywood movies that were hits and saying 'Hey that is what people want from Doctor Who - lets do that!' - Godzilla entertains by having Giant Mutants - Lets make the Dalek Mutant Bigger so it looks like a Kaiju!!! Men in Black had a Squid Creature that threw people around and got people laughing - Great! Lets steal that for the Dalek Mutant attacking Police Officers!!! The A-Team and McGuyver were hits making Tanks out of Junk - Great idea... Lets have the Dalek do that! (although that last one to be honest at least is SLIGHTLY sensible and fits the story!!! No one can tell me it wasn't a Stolen idea!!!)
HELL EVEN THIS EPISODE STOLE OF PREVIOUS WHO EPISODES... The Shrunken 'Stolen' Planets - THAT WAS DAVROS AND HIS REALITY BOMB FROM SEASON... Oh crap I forget which season.. But You know the one!!! It was a Season Finale!!!
It really hurts as while I was Dubious about a Female Doctor - I LIKE JODIE!! I think she is actually doing bloody well with the material she has to work with! Jodie Whittickar isn't the problem... Much as the Anti-SJW crowd claim...
