It’s actually one of my favourite Christmas specials 😭 This and The Runaway Bride are always so nostalgic and easy to jump into. No need to catch up on the plot beforehand. It’s fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously.
As many issues as the episode has, I still think it's quite good. The incredible score and Tennant's performance I think do a good job of carrying the episode. Despite its low points, I think the highs from this episode are quite memorable and give a charm to the episode that covers for its flaws. In particular, that scene where the angels carry Tennant to the main deck really stands out to me and the quick changes of emotions that go on in the scene that follows makes for a really entertaining sequence. Another thing that I like is that we find out in the Stolen Earth that Mr. Copper spent his money well as the subwave network was made possible by the Mr. Copper foundation (Also, I just realized that Mr. Copper's quote about being a monster connects well to Harriet Jones' "death" as she was someone the Doctor opposed and yet she sacrificed herself because she believed in him. Her death also comes full circle since Tennant is deeply upset to find out about her sacrifice despite deeply opposing her views early on). Overall, I'd say that this episode carries with it a charm that makes it so much more watchable than most, if not all, of Jodie Whittaker's episodes (still haven't seen Power of the Doctor yet so that might be the saving grace of her run, but my point still stands).
I love this episode. I really like all of the characters so their deaths really hit me. That’s the highlight of the crossing-the-small-bridge scene is three wonderful characters die in very sad ways
i think one of the funniest moments of this ep was the doctor " take me to your leader" moment Fun fact: murray gold made a cameo in this episode playing in the band (he the gutarist with the mustache)
That always makes me think of Red Dwarf, which did the same joke first: Lister: "I can't bring myself to say it..." Rimmer clone: "Say what?" Lister: "Take us to your leader." Kryten: (winces) Oh sir, how could you?!
You don’t “need” a licence to know how to operate a forklift any more than a go-kart, but to legally operate one in any formal sense it’s the law. So I imagine legally they’d never let an actor (especially not a celebrity guest) operate any machinery that they don’t have a licence for, even if she AND the character would probably be able to figure it out
3:50 As a British person, I confirm we Brits fought in the annual Christmas Eve war against Turkey and had lovely Turkish people for Christmas dinner. And yes, we were savage about it. 🇬🇧🇹🇷
Ahhh you know what, the concept behind this episode was perfect. The problem lies in the fact they needed this to be a family show, and therefore they needed to soften the tragedy of the Titanic. Every death is a little bit silly, the sets look cheap, the characters are one dimensional, the special effects are cheesy. A real dark and scary episode where you could feel the fear of the characters would have made for such a great show.
Best part about the episode is the reference to something that wasn't even a thing yet! The "NO MORE" moment, which is retroactively made so much more important thanks to Day of the Doctor, same for the "NO MORE" moment in Journey's End!
Bruh this episode is 15 years old? I remember watching it on VHS after we taped it because I wasn’t allowed to stay up that late. My god I feel old now.
On my recent rewatch something clicked, Mr Copper gose on to help create the subwave network with Harriet Jones (former prime minister ) which was used to help the doctor in the season 4 finale.
This is actually one of the better Christmas specials. I admire their audacity to kill off so many characters in a family friendly Christmas story. It's definitely not perfect, and there are some cheesy moments, so I would probably give it a 7 or 8/10. 5/10? No, that's way too low.
the turning upside down would have been a nice reference to the Poseidon adventure, the other ship disaster movie where the ship turned upside down as it slowly sinks.
Man, back when they used to show Doctor Who in Greece, they would broadcast this episode any time they could and on any holidays. I must have seen it 10 times and damn, I love it so much. I love the story, the characters, the silliness (I've really missed memorable secondary characters in Who), the cheesy overblown stuff, really everything. I wouldn't argue it's an "objectively" quality Doctor Who story, but I doubt RTD was going in that direction in the first place. He wanted an over the top spectacle for Christmas viewing, with the Doctor kissing Kylie Minogue as a space waitress, Titanic as a giant spaceship, a red dude with spikes and a funny voice, moustache-twirling villains and the queen in slippers thanking the Doctor. And damn it, did he succeed. I'm sure people watching it back then, must have had one hell of a time. We need more of this awesome over the top drama in Doctor Who with no heavy lore elements from time to time, especially in the last decade or so.
I loved this episode. Probably one of my favourite Dr Who episodes period, thanks to the high body count, constant chaos and humor. Yes, the engine room / falling deaths were a little repetitive and hokey, but I could care less. I loved or hated (slade and slimy max) all the characters and the story made ENOUGH sense.
As much as with hindsight this episode is corny, has dodgy CGI and a few obvious plot holes, that to me is what Dr who Christmas specials are meant to be. Tone down the seriousness, up the cheesy comedy, sit and watch with the family on Christmas day. In my head it's one of my favourite doctor who episodes, though I'm sure if I rewatch it these days it may well lose that title. Plus shout-out for its soundtrack, voyage of the damned suite is one of the best officially released Dr who tracks, shame they didn't release full suites for other episodes like silence in the library or waters of mars.
I like the fact that rickston survives the episode because in disaster films they have a trope where the rude arrogant person tends to die early but in a realistic scenario everyone could survive, everyone could die death does not discriminate and it's a good test on the doctor's morality
A neat detail I did like from this episode though is that The TARDIS landed in Cardiff. I know it's where Doctor Who is primarily produced and filmed but I just geek out that she went to the main centre of Rift Energy to recharge herself while The Doctor does his "flim-flam" (as Wilf would put it) on The Titanic. It would've been quite funny though if she landed directly on that paving slab above the Torchwood Hub. 🤣
This is one of my favorite Specials. Then again, it's probably because The Poseidon Adventure is one of my top favorite movies. I also love most of the characters.
This Christmas special episode I enjoyed compared to the Christmas Invasion and the Runaway Bride but still all of three of these specials have their pros and cons
One of the big disappointments was that before this aired, Kylie's character was publicised as being called "Astrid Eth" (rather than Peth) - an anagram of Tardis so we were hoping for something special.
I read the Writer’s Tale for the first time last year and reading Russell continuously procrastinate on writing this script for months and then banging it out in two weeks before the filming start date sure explains a lot about this episode’s … everything
Yeah, I didn't get the humour either. You need a special licence to drive vehicles like buses and lorries, it makes sense you'd need one for a forklift too. To be frank, it'd be weirder if you didn't need a licence for a forklift
@@christianwise637 exactly, having worked in an industry where I’ve seen people lose limbs and life due to improper forklift use, it’s a weird comment to make!
That point about how Christmas is more frustrating for an adult is very true, I mean, my stringy furry ass couldn't buy my parents a present this year, but I did in the end, and they liked them, it's the thought that counts, my boyfriend offerd to chip too after I brought the gifts, so I could have gone better, but they enjoyed the gifts I got them anyhow, lmao.
I thought the Doctor being the "next highest person of authority" to the Hosts was because he called himself Capricorn's apprentice, and the guy didn't correct him.
How can you be a fan of the Doctor Who franchise if all you do is complain about every episode? The only episodes that you give any attention to are the ones that are critically acclaimed to be the best episodes like blink or silence in the library.
It's a bit crazy how you decided to make a main focus of your channel doctor who but it feels like 90% of episodes you've never seen more than once before the review and only like 5 episodes you've seen at least 3 times. I'm not complaining or saying its a bad things its just well... Odd
It's nothing like that story. This was just like The Posedon Adventure, a disaster movie. Robots of Death was about an insane guy who thought humans were oppressing their robot slaves, so he was trying to liberate them. Voyage has more in common with the Lady Cassandra episode of Series 1, as both she and Max simply wanted to make money. The only thing Robots of Death really has in common with Voyage are the robot designs (which was intentional, as Davies loved their look). If they had used a different design for the Angels, you wouldn't be making that comparison.
Okay I would much rather prefer watching the Christmas invasion then watching voyage of the Damned or even Doomsday or journeys and are still on earth I rather drink a whole bottle of diet Coke this is like watching Doctor who meets Star wars or Yoda
Yeah the whole what thing was so overused almost the same as we're not together we're not married no not that was also overused and overplayed it's like playing a grand piano that doesn't know how to shut up did again that's the doctor doesn't know how to shut up
I really didn’t enjoy this episode when I recently rewatched it. RTDs fatphobia is something I really hope we don’t see again in his new era. Regardless I always enjoyed your review. Happy new year mate
The most unrealistic thing in this episode was the notion that Copper could afford a house in London with just a million pounds.
In 2007 houses were cheaper
@@barney9456 not that much cheaper. You still could barely buy a studio flat in central London then for less than a couple of million.
@@lesigh1749maybe all the alien invasions brought house prices down
And had enough money leftover to setup the Mr Copper foundation in time for Harriet Jones to need the subwave network in The Stolen Earth.
@@qayyuma9622 well yeah, london is a ghost town around holiday's and the population is aware of the aliens.
How could you not be heartbroken when Duke fell to his fiery death? Greatest tragedy in Doctor Who history
It’s actually one of my favourite Christmas specials 😭 This and The Runaway Bride are always so nostalgic and easy to jump into. No need to catch up on the plot beforehand. It’s fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously.
I actually really enjoyed the episode, despite some questionable decisions it had great humor and was quite thrilling.
Dayum. I had no idea the guests literally turned to immediate skeletons with the flames 😱
Morvin’s death is still one of the most sudden and shocking deaths of the entire show.
It is?

the score of Astrid falling to her death and the direct aftermath is one of my favorites bits of music in Doctor Who.
I love this episode. I really like all of the characters so their deaths really hit me. That’s the highlight of the crossing-the-small-bridge scene is three wonderful characters die in very sad ways
This episode is my childhood, it felt like a movie to me when i was younger
i think one of the funniest moments of this ep was the doctor " take me to your leader" moment
Fun fact: murray gold made a cameo in this episode playing in the band (he the gutarist with the mustache)
Funniest scene to me was when The Doctor wasted 2/3 of his questions.
That always makes me think of Red Dwarf, which did the same joke first:
Lister: "I can't bring myself to say it..."

The fact that Ten has got a light sabre in the thumbnail is an automatic W for this video. Thumbs up.

The rope that foon uses to tie around the host is part of her costume its just not very noticeable.
