  • So I visited Carlisle and find to my surprise how many shops have actually closed down but there’s some good news in the horizon as a revamp is on the cards!! #explore #carlisle #closed #property #abandonedbuildings #abandoned #walking #carlislecathedral

To put some context into the vid, Carlisle’s main problem is identity, it doesn’t know what it’s for. Look at Newcastle, strong identity which it embraces well, football, mining and industrial heritage, great road system. Carlisle has no vision which comes mainly from the Council, plenty of pricey patch ups etc but under this Government the decline has got worse as costs have exploded. Labour were the last Government that put time and money into the place but Carlisle squandered its heritage by demolition, apathy and poor decisions over many years, just look around the country and see what other councils have managed to do with their resources and then come back to Carlisle, even the footballs turned sour.....again!. Thanks for the vid, great.

One main problem why it has no identity is it is situated basically in the middle of nowhere. Miles and miles of countryside eventually reaching carlisle which is classed as a city simply because of a cathedral being there but really Carlisle is a market town and calling it a city is misleading unlike city like Newcastle or Manchester which are excellent places with a lot going for them. As Carlisle back in the day used to be part of Scotland it is understandable it does not have an identity. Online shopping does not help either to be honest with shops in the towns.

Love your videos, your sense of humor and Keano's jockey interprets. I've learned a lot about northeast England following in your runs and walkabouts. I've seen you chronicle around Peterlee (great conversation with Len at the pavillion), County Durham, Roker Sunderland, Newcastle...
It is sad what happens to towns and cities all over the world when Industry is closed down or moves away, it is surprising to see it happening in mighty England.

Hiya mate great video i was born and bred in carlisle fantastic video, just thought i would give some info on the history of those buildings and some of my personal experience regarding them at 5:28 that used to be a frankie and bennys and thrived for many years i used to go there as a young lad it was a great treat of my grandma once in a while, over the way from there where you showed the red building used to be an iceland and was open until around 2021 but was relocated out of the city into a place not far from the city centre named st nicholas and right over the road from there it was two incredibly successful businesses first off it was a farmfoods which stood tall before being relocated out of the city and put near the new industrial estate opposite the sainsburys which is currently situated a few blocks up from the castle in around 2016
that farmfoods store then became a hairdressers named Gabriel Ruane, which had to close due to covid and sadly next reopened since then its simply been used for a few popup shop ventures such as a charity shop and i believe a gym supplements type of place simply the council have seen whats happened and has sold of the car park next to the old iceland i dont think the stores have been sold in this transaction however,
there are now plans to create a stack which has happened on the seafront at seaburn and newcastle on the former carparks land to build foot traffic into the city, it is going to thrive once more i hope thank you for making a video on our quant little city and i hope this info is useful

watched a little bit further on so i will give more context in order of your showing the lanes, from next to the timpson 6:01 that was a paper shop it just simply moved over the way as i think its because it had a back alley next to the old frankie and bennys which made it viable to get deliveries easier the next shop you show used to be a KFC and believe it or not has been closed long before covid no one really knows why but carlisle was without a KFC for around three years next to it used to be a old old brand that has since bite the dust JJB Sports ever since that brand went into administration that store has never been used and probably never will again many have labled it a cursed building as its been stood there for years without any tenants when you turn over that was a wilkinsons camera shop which moved out of the lanes and next to that cafe that just opened the one on the end was a clarks that moved up near the old debenhams building that building isnt available to use tho as it has exclusive rights with card and merchandise shops during the festive season and always reopens as a calender shop at the start of december next to the greggs was a carphone warehouse, next to the old jones building used to be a sky shop, next to clares has also had the same relationship as the old clarks shop it often reopens in the summer/winter months as an card or merchandise store
Peter Jacksons went online, tasker and shaw was very short lived was in that premises for around a year and a bit and must have suffered money troubles for years it was a save the children charity shop which closed in around 2015 with all the ones in the market hall, people really do not like the way it has gone it used to be full of everything from watchmakers, to grocers and even sweet shops but those days have ceased its taken on many uses its been a market and food hall but those days are slowly turning away the rent in these premises like the lanes are next to none and people just cannot afford to run a store here, im glad to see the fruit and veg place is still doing well next up the one with the scaffolding was poundstretcher gone are those days its been abandoned for years that huge shop that closed down was a Bulloghs and then a burtons which my grandma worked in for many years until it shut down it has also not been used for years since 2012 and finally all of the shops down castle street which where gone where banks until they moved into the city centre believe it or not no one uses that street at all even though the beautiful castle is there wierd and strange it doesnt have much more footfall this one is a long read but i hope it helps

There are no monk tunnels under Devonshire street. I'm not sure why this nonsense keeps coming up. The properties have large basements and there some old pathways that lead into the basements of some of the properties for deliveries but there are no tunnels criss-crossing Carlisle. I've worked at the station in the tunnels under there and they did connect to the hotel but they have long since been blocked. And in contrast to local legend they weren't put in for Queen Victoria they were there to take the bags for hotel guests from the train to their room. Back in those days only the wealthy would be staying in hotel and they didn't want to have carry their own bags.
