I have same issue with my '06 and bought same slip on panels. I was debating welding them on, but this turned out pretty clean! Nice work I may opt for the rivet and glue. Did you do rivets on the top edge or just underneath? How are your cab corners? Mine are gone so not really looking forward to that mess.
Cab corners are in good condition didn't have to deal with those fortunately and the rivets are just on the underside, the Metal Bond Sb-12 is some really good stuff just make sure to clean the surfaces before using.
Thanks for the video. I live near Boston and as you can imagine our winters are full of snow and salt. Have the same exact issue. I found your video to be the most beneficial and I’m sure I can tackle this with ease. Thank you for sharing and saving me some $$$. I am confident this type of repair will hold up here in New England for as long as I need it to.
I used a similar method. 4 years of salty winters and still solid. I had to rebuild the mid and inner rockers as well. I keep the insides wet with oily rustproofing through the rubber plugs at inside rockers and middle rocker with added 1/4" holes.
well it isn't the right way that's for sure if you don't mind seeing a lap joint every time you open the door I personally couldn't stand it but you should have at the very least cut out the rusty areas and treated everything inside that you could get to with something like bed liner
It’s actually the absolute best way to replace rockers. No more rusting or denting. It was a genius idea for a product. They need to make for old trucks
Nice and simple👍 Yes you could cut out the existing panel and weld in a new one but for the average guy that just needs it to work, this is a good method. Thanks for the video🍻
I'm doing mine now and normally I would cut the spotwelds and install and weld back like factory. But now I'm old and don't want to do all that crap. So I like you put a heavy bead of body caulk on the top lip and about 30 rivets. Then same for underneath only started in the center clamping and riveting and it came out nice. I painted the old and new rockers both sides with bed liner and color sprayed to match. Also used some duraglass on top lip to blend and hide the rivets. Can't tell it was touched. Unfortunately I have to replace both cab corners and so I took off the bed for access.
Thank you for the video---very helpful. My only questions is this: What are you able to rivet too? My nearly call of mine is rusted out so I won't have much to rivet too unless there is another solid piece under there to weld to? I actually have a 2014 Silverado Extended Cab.
9/16 Self drilling flat pan heads or even regular pan heads work great too, I did my rocker panels on my 01 durango, I just used black coil stock I had laying around...:) ... I have a cat eye silverado, with the same problems...But, i think, I'll just use a body filler with hardener...
Since these companies usually are not paying for sponsorship, I have gone through my videos before uploading and blurred out the logos! (I usually purposely try to not have any advertising in the background - I know, there is a name for this type of personality, LOL!) Anyways, thanks for the video as I am building on my knowledge before I tackle my first rocker panels, on our Ford Flex! (Not gonna be straight forward)
Nice repair, But not to sure if it would pass Inspection in all States, I know It would never pass Vermont State Inspection. But for intent and purposes It is a nice clean good looking repair. Good Job. 👍
Hi Joey ... enjoyed the video and my question is SB-12 adhesive I think has a cure rate of 24 hours optimal ... how long did you wait before driving the vehicle (also I noticed it's been several years since you fixed the panel and it's holding up for you ... so ... don't want to drive it too soon after glue n riveting!!)
and the reason you had to trim it is because those are made to lap under the cab corners which wouldve ideally been replaced at the same time with no trimming
Great video and the best non-welding solution I have seen. Thanks for posting. Quick question, I can find cheap covers for silverados but not for my 2005 4 door Tahoe. Do you or anyone know if the $30 covers you bought will fit my Tahoe if I trim them to length? Thanks and God bless
I just replaced my 07 rockers and cab corners. What a pain… I wound up cutting all the old out, oil sprayed the inner rockers and welded the new stuff. I was a little extra particular and overall, I spend four solid days. Again, cut out the old, oil sprayed, installed the new. I applied chip guard on the entire bottom half. I hope it lasts a while… what a crappy design by GM.
Great video! Do you think this could work if the lower half of the entire rocker panel is rusted off? Basically, where you put your rivets is no longer there at all.
Thank you for an informative video. As a complete idiot with cars, this video is helping me to try and take a stab at it. I'm trying to get about 3 years out of my truck, do you feel like riveting/gluing could last that long? My fear is that in a year I'm going to have to do this again.
@@Arahsaka I'd do some research on that but I'm pretty sure they're the same just make sure you get the right ones, mine is extended cab so if you have crew cab they wont work
Hey great video, I will definitely do this to my outer but my inner panels are starting to go... do you think if I bought a inner panel I could trim it up and simply just cover the rusted inner and rivet it over top? Thanks in advance for the reply.
The only other thing I would suggest is using great stuff (expandable) foam inside the rockers.the benefits to doing that are strength, integrity and to keep some crap out of there.if your not going the patch panel method for a whole rocker it gives you a foundation to use fiberfill..rookies out there like me..DO NOT use Bondo anywhere.it just isn't meant for this use fiberfill. It's a million times stronger will last and the only issue it's working time is fairly fast.you got about ten mins..usually a little less actually.good luck everyone.

Go quote it out at a body shop and tell me what they charge and compare it to my fix. Guarantee it will cost way more and this is a cheaper alternative and holds up just fine.
Sorry so it took so long for the reply but you could cut out the rusted rocker and theoretically you could weld in a new one but i opted to to do it the easier route. Hope this helps.
The issue is, rust is “cancer” so when you leave that cancer present, it continues to spread. All you did was cover it up. You should have cut out all that rust first before covering it up.

For those saying this isn't a valid repair and it won't last guess what WRONG! 4 years later still as good as the day they were installed.

This looks like the best way to do it, for a do-it-yourselfer. I've looked at a number of other approaches.🙂
Totally agree!
Good video. It really shows the do it yourself guy a good repair for a common problem with Silverados.
ABOUT READY TO DO MY 2004 SILVERADO BOTH SIDES..THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND SHARING 👍

Man I wish I had something on the bottom to rivet to! Damn new england road salt. Nice work man looks good.
Most northern trucks suffer the same issue as yours.
Planning on doing this with my 04
Good video. Easy to follow. Am doing the same thing to my 2000 GMC. Thanks.
Glad it helped
Nice thoughtful job Joey! And thanks for the link.
Any time!

Might have to just do the glue if there is no material for you to rivet to.

Wow beautiful job I just picked up a truck same truck that needs the same both sides
Sounds like a fun project!
Good job I learned a lot from the video
Thank you good feedback is always appreciated!
Nice work Mr., Fyi herculiner and monstaliner have different colors of bed-liner roll on coatings for a closer match for repairs that show
I will have to remember that next time. Thanks for the heads up!
Would it be good to soak it with anti rust oil with a garden pressure sprayer before closing it?
It would not be a bad idea to do that.
Expert Video! Do I use Bad liner if I am going to paint the rocker with factory color?
If you're gonna do factory color I wouldn't bed liner it

I let it sit overnight and its been fine ever since!
Rustoleom oil based paint works great too
Great point!
nice repair. I'll try to copy your work on my GMC.
Quick question: are these panels only made to slip on over the existing or can you also cut out the existing piece and weld this one on in place?
The panels i ordered were specifically stated as slip on panels.
Hello, can you tell me plis what type of glue you use, what is the name of the glue? Thank you!
Check description
Very nice job 👍 my rocker panels on my classic 07 Silverado are totally trashed where did you buy these panels at where can I get them from??
You can find them on rockauto as well as Amazon
Wisconsin truck owners with non-existent rocker panels be like😂😂😂. I wouldn't of made a big deal about the rust that was on his truck😂.
He said rusted out and then he showed those two tiny rust spots 😂 mine are gone I’m from Illinois 😂
The truck was originally from Northern Virginia so there was rust but not as bad as farther up north.
and the reason you had to trim it is because those are made to lap under the cab corners which wouldve ideally been replaced at the same time with no trimming
It turned out good and has held up. Thanks for the input!
Great video, good grinding skills, I think I'll buy that ryobi die grinder before I do this, thanks
Ryobi tools will definitely get the job done. Thank you!
Will your state inspection fail a vehicle for outer body rust through?
I understand some states do.
No outer body rust does not fail inspection in my state.
@@joeysautodiy7740 lucky. Anything more than the size of a dime is a rejection in massachusetts
excellent video what type of glue did you use. thanks
Metalbond sb-12
My bottom rockers are completely ate up I have no where to put rivets. Would the glue be enough to hold it for awhile?
The glue needs something to bond to if you have enough metal to bond it I think it would hold up for a lengthy amount of time

I've seen so many GM trucks with the same issue unfortunately

Probably if you use alot of the glue it should hold
Where can I buy the glue from?
I purchased the glue in the video from Amazon.

Im going on three years now and still haven't had any issues with it. SO you should get three years no problem.
nice job, thats how im doing mine. thanks for the know how
No problem 👍
Does the glue require specific temps to set up in?
I believe it has to be above 70 degrees Fahrenheit to properly adhere and dry.
How much did it run you? I have an 04 Silverado Maroon red, and the rockets are fucked as well as cabcorners looking to see how much it’ll cost me
Around 80 to 100 bucks if i remember correctly wasn't to expensive there are links in the description to where i got all the stuff needed.
