Thanks, Jarl! I gave you a shoutout in the description for the video title inspiration! 👍 I would have baked it into the video -- but was afraid I might need to change it later if I get ambushed by the ultralight haters! 😉👍
ARE! YOU! KIDDING! ME!???? You lucky son-of-a-gun! You got to enjoy the hospitality of Senor Muir's Taco Hut! A good hiker friend is a part of that group (Neenah Spellman). They've been doing this at random points along the JMT for several years. So cool that you crossed paths. (And, dangme, this was a great memory for me - did the JMT in 2018 and camped at Charlotte Lake).
Yeah -- really it was fine as I didn't have to backtrack much and it was all so beautiful I didn't mind at all. There's something great about hiking a trail in both directions too -- it does give a (literal) different perspective and yields a sense of completeness. Thanks for watching! 🌞
Never underestimate Jamal and his crocs! It's always an adventure tagging along on your hikes, thanks for the excellent camera work, I felt like I was right there with you! The Sierras are so dauntingly gorgeous.
Haha -- thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. It's always my goal to virtually take others with me -- so happy to hear that you felt that. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Another awesome trip with unbelievable views, beautiful sunsets and the amazing multi colored peak towards the end of the video. I also liked seeing the memorial from 1930 and the man's tools still on-site.
Thanks so much! Yes, I was so happy to see the tools were still there. In fact, I compared it to my pictures from my first visit long ago and it's pretty much the same. Good to see that people leave it all in place for others to see. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Wasn't that great? Truly a great group of people bringing joy to others. It's FAR from an easy task to do what they did -- so it was much appreciated. Cheers! ✌🍻🌮
Thanks! Yeah, walking on those shifty boulders was tricky. I wish I had more footage of the hardest part -- but I was too busy watching my footage! Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Thanks! I was definitely walking a bit slower out there. Protecting the knee and because I don't have as much experience on talus/scree in the mountains (compared to Utah.) Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Thanks! Those are via my phone -- it's just amazing how far technology has come. The biggest challenge for me now is staying awake long enough and finding the motivation after a long day to get out of the tent to get some decent shots. Thanks again for watching and the comment. ✌✨
Thanks! I really didn't explain it well, but I had jammed my toe so started the day in the Crocs with intent to change before the switchbacks. But... they felt so good, I just kept going. Thought I'd probably have to change once I started going down, but that felt fine too, so I just kept them on. It worked out even better than I expected. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Love all your videos Jamal but this one really brought back some great memories of my wife's and my hike of the JMT a few years ago. I well remember Glen and Forester passes. The Sierra is truly a beautiful and magical place. Thanks for taking us along. Glade to hear your knee is holding up. Several years ago I was scheduled for knee surgery but canceled at the last minute. My knee started feeling better and has several thousand miles of tough trails on it since then. Hope you have the same experience.
That's great to hear re: your knee. Glad you and your wife got to experience the JMT -- it truly is an amazing place and a route I think all hikers should try to do (even if in sections.) Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. 🌞✌
Yep -- the views were fairly non-stop great on this hike and that taco/beer was one of the best ever! (hiking really makes one appreciate the flavors of home!) Thanks again for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Yeah -- I was above tree line quite a bit on this hike and up there it really is barren. A friend once gave me grief for taking him on a hike in this area and asked "how'd you find the only mountains without any trees?!" 😬 There are plenty of trees -- just not up that high. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Really -- that's awesome! In the thru hiking community there's a bit of debate whether its worth the extra weight to take Crocs or any camp shoe for that matter. If you watched... you know which side I'm on! 😉✌
@@Acrossutah - In my world Crocs weigh nothing lol ... backpackers of course consider the long haul and accumulation of everything. As I watched you trekking along .. I figured you probably had a 2nd pair as back up in case a strap blew out. Navy blue yes?
Yeah, it's a different type of beauty that's for sure. I comment later in the series how I still prefer hiking in the canyons of Utah -- but there's no denying how amazing the Sierra is as well. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Haha -- guess the grass is always greener on the other side! As primarily a desert hiker I do enjoy amble amounts of sunshine, but... I like it more when there are trees/rocks that I can hide under for breaks. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Thanks! It weighed a bit more due to the bear canister and carrying so much food at once (had an eight-day supply to begin and at the re-supply coming up in the next episode.) BUT... luckily there's so much water out there that unlike Utah one doesn't have to carry much at all. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Thanks for taking us along. We must of missed you in early August in the Horseshoe Meadow- Cottonwood Pass area. We day hiked to Chicken Spring lake and the next day backpacked Cottonwood Lakes TH via New Army Pass to Mitre Basin and out Cottonwood Pass. Your video clip at 13:18 is my computer screen saver from a past trip. You helped me nail the location. Did you resupply at Onion Valley or did you cache your supplies from a prior day hike or have someone bring in for you? What is your pack and liter size and your pack weight starting out? I enjoy your videos. Hike on🥾🏔
Thanks! So you were up there too? It's funny, after I finished I learned that several different groups of people I know were also up there in August at some point. I pre-cached my re-supply at Onion Valley the same day I started hiking (which is part of the reason it was so late when I began.) My pack weight was probably around 35lbs to begin and then again after the re-supply (which is about 8 days of food.) I'm not an ultralighter by any means, but it's not as bad as it looks. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Thanks! Yeah, I was surprised and happy to get the shoutout from them. I really don't watch many hiking videos here on YT, but that series caught my attention and I thought it was really well done. 👍
Can't tell if that's sarcasm or not, but... even though I was pretty out of shape and the trail was kicking my butt -- I was still loving it! 🌞👍 Thanks for watching.
New subscriber here. Jarl sent me! Loving your journeys. Just finished all 12 episodes of your Escalante Loop hike. Awesome stuff!
Cool -- thanks for the sub! Glad you enjoyed the GEL series. And spoiler alert... you will see Jarl in a later video here on this channel. 😉👍
The GOAT of Utah backpacking strikes again! I cannot wait to enjoy this adventure.
Thanks -- most appreciated! 🌞✌
Haha, awesome!!
Thanks, Jarl! I gave you a shoutout in the description for the video title inspiration! 👍 I would have baked it into the video -- but was afraid I might need to change it later if I get ambushed by the ultralight haters! 😉👍
How beautiful can a gray stone desert be ❤
Yep -- it is a weird world up above tree line. Very barren and desert like -- but the distant views and the blue/green lakes are beautiful. Cheers! 🌞✌
I’m loving the look of those basin lakes from above. They just seem to pop out in comparison to the surrounding rock! Good travels!✌️
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Great video as always.
Thank YOU! Glad you enjoyed it. 🌞✌

Outstanding presentation man! Your filming is so inspiring and simply enjoyable! Bravo
Thanks -- I appreciate that. 🌞✌
O those mountain 🏔️ streams! Worth the backtrack 😁
Yeah -- really it was fine as I didn't have to backtrack much and it was all so beautiful I didn't mind at all. There's something great about hiking a trail in both directions too -- it does give a (literal) different perspective and yields a sense of completeness. Thanks for watching! 🌞

Tacos and Beer! Wow!
Yep -- NEVER imagined that even when people told me that there was a surprise up ahead. It was a good day. 😉🍻🌮
Such an awesome surprise, beer & tacos!! Absolutely beautiful. Thank you once again for taking us on this hike.
Love it! Crocs FTW!
Thanks... and I agree! 😉✌

Wow. So rugged. Thanks for sharing. Great adventures.
Thanks again for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Best hiking videos on UTube!
God bless you sir! How awesome to have hot tacos & a drink 🥃
Wasn't that great? Truly a great group of people bringing joy to others. It's FAR from an easy task to do what they did -- so it was much appreciated. Cheers! ✌🍻🌮
Incredible thanks. Enjoy seeing the hard loose talus scrambling at the end.
Thanks! Yeah, walking on those shifty boulders was tricky. I wish I had more footage of the hardest part -- but I was too busy watching my footage! Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Rocks are no fun, but keep this up and you will be back to 100% . We will follow allong. Glad you are back
Thanks! I was definitely walking a bit slower out there. Protecting the knee and because I don't have as much experience on talus/scree in the mountains (compared to Utah.) Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Lovvvved those star shots! 🎉
Thanks! Those are via my phone -- it's just amazing how far technology has come. The biggest challenge for me now is staying awake long enough and finding the motivation after a long day to get out of the tent to get some decent shots. Thanks again for watching and the comment. ✌✨
You are a sport! In crocs or not it’s always a pleasure to be with you on trails. 😅
Thanks! I really didn't explain it well, but I had jammed my toe so started the day in the Crocs with intent to change before the switchbacks. But... they felt so good, I just kept going. Stunning! So many awesome views. I bet that trail taco and beer were the best ever!
Yep -- the views were fairly non-stop great on this hike and that taco/beer was one of the best ever! (hiking really makes one appreciate the flavors of home!) Thanks again for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Wow! I can't believe how barren it is. No trees or shrubs. Reminds me of desert mountains of the Middle East.

You admitted to some rough hiking during the video but at the end you still could manage a chuckle. You have a good attitude.
Thanks! Yep, still having fun even though it took some effort this time around. 🌞✌
Well spent time, watching your video content. As always, thanks for sharing.
Thanks -- much appreciated! Cheers! 🌞✌
I clicked on the video because of the Crocs ... my every day footwear!
Really -- that's awesome! In the thru hiking community there's a bit of debate whether its worth the extra weight to take Crocs or any camp shoe for that matter. If you watched... you know which side I'm on! 😉✌

Great video.
Thanks! Glad you watched and enjoyed it. 🌞✌
Awesome video Jamal! I need to catch up on your other videos ASAP!
Thanks -- glad to see you watching again! I really liked your Aurora videos -- good stuff. 👍🌞
It’s beautiful. But not red. Sit love it. Thanks.
Yeah, it's a different type of beauty that's for sure. I comment later in the series how I still prefer hiking in the canyons of Utah -- but there's no denying how amazing the Sierra is as well. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
"Constant sun is no fun." Huh, if you lived in England, you would never say that. Count your blessings, Jamal.
Haha -- guess the grass is always greener on the other side! As primarily a desert hiker I do enjoy amble amounts of sunshine, but... I like it more when there are trees/rocks that I can hide under for breaks. Thanks for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Much respect for hiking so much elevation gain with a bum knee. Does your pack weigh as much as it does on a Utah hike of comparable time?

Your videos are always awesome Hap tip To Jupiter in his Hayduke hike to give you kudos. You deserve it.
Thanks! Yeah, I was surprised and happy to get the shoutout from them. I really don't watch many hiking videos here on YT, but that series caught my attention and I thought it was really well done. 👍
You don’t look like you’re having a good time buddy.
Can't tell if that's sarcasm or not, but... even though I was pretty out of shape and the trail was kicking my butt -- I was still loving it! 🌞👍 Thanks for watching.
