Clancy Brown (Shawshank, SpongeBob) joins me this week to share his personal experience with impostor syndrome throughout his career from its inception to highlights like The Shawshank Redemption. Clancy talks about how the industry had changed over the decades and how he feels blessed to have found voice acting for the presence it allows him to keep. We also get into some good ole Lex talk, how fame can drastically change a set, and even his personal experience working with the late great Sean Connery.

Rosenbaum nailed The Flash, that's still the best iteration of that character.
Rosenbaum wasn't in The Flash unless I missed it. John Cryer who was in 16 Candles played him.

at least the Wally West Flash…he was never the Barry Allen Flash as they’re completely different characters and personalities.

Clancy Brown is Luthor. He absolutely is. We should have seen him as the live action Lex ages ago in some medium. Brown can bring the calm menace, and physicality to look imposing next to, say, a Routh Superman.
And Cryer as Lex? I can't be intimidated by that guy.
Same reason I can't take Jesse Eisenberg's schizophrenic Lex Luthor seriously, he's supposed to be a big, imposing figure, it's part of how's he's been successful in business, through intimidation. A kitten wouldn't be intimated by him...
@@TheOneManWhoBeatYou I cannot even be bothered to look it up, but if this Cryer is the Supergirl series' Lex Luthor, then, yeah. I definitely cannot take him as Luthor seriously. Maybe Luthor doesn't necessarily have to have an imposing stature, like in the Superman or JLU animated series, but the guy in the EW Crossover, acting opposite from Welling, is...like...the other end of that scale. Just "hilariously" bad. But, actually not funny. The reason I mention the crossover, is because I only saw him for the first time there. I didn't even see him in Supergirl, 'cause I stopped watching that series midway through season 3. Recently, I saw a clip from Season 6, with the team going up against multiple previous villains, and Alex dodged an attack from...Parasite (?), I think it was, and she goes "No touching without consent." AND I was immediately reminded WHY I stopped watching that series.

because he has played such great characters as both heroes and villains, he nails both
Both Michael and Clancy were incredible Lex Luthors. Both my favorites. I honestly love hearing how much respect Clancy has for Smallville and Michael. Truly heartwarming.😀❤❤
Rosenbaum will always be young Lex and Clancy Brown adult Lex for me. The animated series did more for that character than any other media in my opinion.
Clancy Brown is also the voice of Mr. Krabbs from SpongeBob SquarePants. He played Kurgen, Lex Luthor, and Mr. Krabbs! Amazing!
Clancy Brown is my favorite Luthor of all time. When I read any comic with Lex speaking I always imagine him with Clancy's voice the same way I do with Kevin Conroy & Batman. Rosenbaum was great as too but I always loved him more as the Flash in JL/JLU than as Lex in Smallville.

I love the way they show not just respect for each other but also show love for the character . Very rare nowadays. The best versions of Luthor in live action and animated. Also love the animated flash he did just wish it was Barry
Clancy Brown will always be the one and only Lex Luthor voice 🙂. He is amazing as the voice and that’s the voice hear when i read a Superman comic .

Michael Rosenbaum is the definitive young version of Lex Luthor in live action
Clancy Brown is iconic rather in a voice-over role such as Lex Luthor or live-action performance such as General Wade Eiling in The Flash. All the respect in the world to him.
Funnily enough, the Animated version of General Eiling is voiced by J.K. Simmons
I love Clancy Brown! All the roles he has played have so mimicked my tastes growing up and through adulthood. I feel like he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. Tom Hanks and him I would have love to have met and had a conversation with. I feel like they grew up with me but I never met.
Clancy is right. Smallville is the best adaptation by far ... and Mikey i cant tell you how much lex influenced me at the time. I was in highschool. I used lines you used in the show at parties and people thought i was cool and shit. Lol. Thanks bud.

Honestly they were both my favorite takes of the character. Love that they showed love for each other. Michael Lex felt like a mix of classic businessman Lex with the Bronze Age Lex’s sympathetic and human nature while Clancy Briwn showed range from post crisis Trump inspired Lex to mad scientist to super villain Lex. The only one who comes close to them are Cryer and YJ ‘s take of Lex
The great level of respect here is inspiring. I loved lois and Clark but Smallville had that contemporary charm that I don't even think any cw show has been able to match.
@Mister Jay she wasn't really important to Clark's development to becoming superman besides introducing him to magic so it didn't bother me. Besides she has more history with batman anyway.

The ONLY reason Clancy Brown might beat out Michael Rosenbaum is because the cartoon did a great job demonstrating how brilliant Lex is in all fields. Whether he is inventing new weapons or maneuvering politically, the animated Lex was brilliant. Smallville Lex was also a genius, and Michael Rosenbaum did an amazing job showing how he becomes the comic Lex, but he never really demonstrated his scientific aptitude. He always hired experts to do the job for him. Now to be fair, I noticed that Lex always perfectly understood their research and was able to direct them towards the result he wanted, but he personally never built or invented stuff. He was more a Machiavellian mastermind than an all around "most intelligent human on Earth."

Clancy Brown is such an iconic actor. He can be big, imposing and villainous or he can be warm, kind and fatherly. Amazing range and tons of voice work. Salute for being a part of the stories of both my youth and adulthood.
You both did a great job as Lex, but personally I think that Mr. Brown played it best!

Both are correct. One is best w/ Lex becoming Lex & the other is best as Lex fully formed.
While I agree with them on Lois and Clark I have to admit John Shea in season 1 as Lex Luthor knocked it out of the park with one episode where he said: "Superman has morals, he has ethics, he’s unrelentingly good and because of that I will win." That's Lex at his most ruthless and evil. His time as Lex might have been the shortest but he made every scene he was in count... in that first season at least. After that... it's hit or miss.
I agree. Shea's Luthor is my all time favorite version. Too bad everything around him was fairly subpar.
I really wish we could've gotten all of the lex luthor actors on smallville in live action working together as alternate lex luthors or something like that. Pity the cw never thought of it.
I like respect and that both appreciate how in different way they played one of the most iconic DC villain: Lex Luthor. I love the version from DCAU to which Clancy Brown's voice acting was great. After that when I read the comics I imagine that voice for an adult Luthor speaking. Clancy Brown has very charismatic and specific sound of voice and way of speaking, which was perfect for that role. I haven't watched the whole Smallville series, but from what I have seen, I liked Michael Rosenbaum's performance as younger Lex and he was one of the pluses of the show (although it wasn't enough for me to continue after the third season). Writing of the character and overall how is the show is one of the major factors for sure; but beside that DCAU Lex Luthor is usually very well written, Clancy Brown's acting made it amazing and iconic. Michael Rosenbaum has proven to be a good voice actor in DCAU as Flash too. I appreciate them both in the role of Lex Luthor and other ones, just Clancy Brown more (in live-action he was great in Carnivàle, The Shawshank Redemption and also in many others productions).

I was watching a movie the other day with Rutger Hauer, about this guy that gets out of prison after supposedly killing his wife. Sure enough there is Clancy Brown! (Movie was Past Midnight). He was great in the high lander but his acting in Shawshank Redemption was fantastic.(That in my opinion is one of the best movies of all time.)
he's right though. i loved Lois and Clark at the beginning. but rewatchability? give me Smallville any day. the brotherhood of Lex and Clark; hearing all the early 2000 pop songs. i started listening to smash mouth again because of it. iChuckle. to be honest, i just finished season two all over again and it gives me such a great feeling. [also, JL/JLU Lex that Sir Clancy played is delicious! always!]

The Smallville Lex, Rosenbaum, gave us a great backstory of how Clark and Lex met and became friends, then eventually turned into enemies, all with an incredible performance.
The Superman Animated series and JL+JLU Lex, Clancy, is right up there with Hamills Joker and Conroys Batman as some of the most iconic voice-acting performances of all time.
Whenever there's a DC animated event that features one of those 3 characters that aren't voiced by those 3 actors, I'm a little disappointed.
I also feel the same with George Newberns Superman, thinking about it.

Smallville was the best. HD helped, but they had great writing and a great cast and they are responsible for a number of other properties that followed. And yeah, they had the best Lex Luthor. The character was interesting and well-acted.

Lex Luthor interviews Lex Luthor, this is one for the ages. Can you imagine the Arrowverse or DCEU bringing Clancy Brown in as Lex Luthor, even if from a parallel universe similar to what they did with Kevin Conroy?

They are both REALLY good Luthors for different reasons, but Michael's is 100% the gold standard i judge everyone from.

I don't know if Clancy Brown as Lex would have saved BvS, but it would have been a huge step in the right direction.

Michael was a great young Luthor who had an innocence that devolved into malevolence, but Clancy nailed the mix of genius, business savy, and menace that others haven’t been able to capture before or since.
Hackman was good, but Brown was better

Yeah. Smallville did something that maybe be a problem, now. It didn’t follow the comics and became its own, and people gave it a chance.

I’ve seen many movies or TV bad guy roles where I think Clancy would be better choice.
My favorite Luthor is always going to be John Shea - the show was terrible, the writing was terrible, but the performance was so delightfully evil. That said I think Rosenbaum and Brown's performances are much more true to the character.

I feel like Clancy's Lex was more of a genius but as a personality he was just one dimensional evil. Watching Michael's Lex was like watching the fall of lucifer. Superman's trusted friend to hated enemy

I have to agree with Mr Brown. Smallville was the best live action rendition of the Superman story on the small screen. The first two Superman movies with Christopher Reeve - hell, no comparison. Michael played the best live action Lex in my book, out of all the ones I've seen. I don't watch the animated series so I can't comment on those.
In a different reality, Reeve's doesn't get paralyzed, and Margot Kidder is still with us, and the Multiverse starts with Smallville, bringing back Dean Cane, Teri Hatcher, Margot Kidder, Reeves and Hatcher. That would be fun i think.
Maybe a nightmare to write and cast and shoot that (Gene Hackman is not easy to work with i have heard).
