Thanks for the compliments! As for your video question, Canon DSLRs use the same bit rate for 720p as they do for 1080p, so there's no 'saving' on throughput. Any good Class 6 card should be fine for HD video.
@BOTx5 Thanks! It was done with the Canon 5D Mark II and 50mm f1.2L. In fact that combo filmed most of the video. You'll also see the small DOF of this combo in the Quiksilver store location in this video, and in the cinema in part 2...
i'd just like to say thanks for all the reviews you have done. they're fantastically well spoken and give me more information than any other reviews on the net!
I must say Gordon Laing is the best and most professional I have seen in delivering a review. He doesn't 'waffle' but gets to the point and at the same time has a pleasant manner. He produces the information in a concise manner both in speech and visual presentation. He pauses between speech to make it clear. He knows how to set up the visual presentation - he does it in detail so that he gives you close look at how the camera is gripped etc. Cameralabs should be proud of him - a rare find.
Well spotted! I actually filmed the jetboat segments by the river using each of the cameras on test. The intro that segment was filmed with the 600D / T3i. But then when I'm talking about the Canon at 7:30, I'm actually filming with the D5100, and when I'm talking about the D5100 a little later at 8:20, I've switched back to the Canon. Note for the rest of the video I used a Canon 5D2 for filming.
D5100 is a great camera. The Nikon D5100 brings the high quality 16.2 megapixel sensor, great low-light performance, and full HD video. Click for pricing info : #amzn.to/1fsGSof
@Tuticrafts Thanks! You can use any Canon lens on a Canon DSLR, but remember all of them will effectively have their focal length multiplied by 1.6 times. So most lenses designed for film won't be very wide on a DSLR.
@UndergroundBerlin I think it would be a great first time DSLR, although if you don't need the articulated screen, wireless flash or movie crop mode, go for the cheaper 550D / t2i.
Mr. Gordon, I really like how objective and creative you are on your videos. I've been reading and seeing reviews about these two cameras, and I'm not so sure what camera could be the best for me, this will be my first reflex and I'm pretty sure either one would be a great choise
@globalarte Thanks, that was a fault at my end. I've corrected it now. The prices you'll now see for the T3i / 600D are indeed for that camera. Thanks for your support!
I did check out your site and it was what led me to chose the Canon over the Nikon. All the great photos and test videos of each camera and in depth verdicts of your research was great. Much appreciated!
@ron1111 Hi Ron, I think you may have mixed up the numbers. The T3i has exactly the same recording time as the T2i: both cameras can film for 29:59 OR until the file reaches 4GB in size. The file will reach 4GB in any of the HD modes after around 12 minutes. It's all explained in my T3i / 600D review.
Sir I must say I'm really impressed with your video. Very photographic, huge departure from the videos you used to make, lots of interesting background. Over all it looks very well produced. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Brilliant review as always. You should post more video reviews. There are no other camera reviews on youtube with the depth and practicality of yours and lack of unnecessary bias
@thumelen that's absolutely correct. It has a very small, but measurable impact on lens coverage and viewfinder image size. It's a tiny difference, but a difference none the less.
Hi Davina, all three have exactly the same photo and video quality, so your choice between them boils down to features, speed and price. I'd go for the 650D or 60D if you're serious about video as the flip out screen is useful.
Any DSLR will do for portraits, but the most important thing is to also get a nice bright lens so you can blur the backgrounds. You're looking for a 50mm with a small f-number like f1.8.
Impeccable reviews of these two very similar cameras. It definitively separates differences and informs of all pros and cons of these products. I checked out his website and after many [poorly created and presented websites and reviews] I finally made my choice on which one of these I wanted because of his through comparison and contrast. thanks a lot Keep up the awesome work.
Yep, all of the Nikon 50mm lenses will work on full-frame FX and cropped DX bodies. I have a catalogue of lenses at cameralabs . com and I've stated there if they're compatible with full-frame or not.
Ok so here's the deal, I'm about to start college & I also fell in love with photography in my senior year. I've decided to take digital photo classes in college & I'm trying to decide on which DSLR I should get. I've got some experience with the D5100 becuase my high school provided my class with them, but I'm totally open to Canon's DSLR. I'm still a beginner & so if you can help me understand & choose 1 between the 2 I would really appreciate it, thanks.
@NscaleAmtrak Sounds like the memory card is too slow to keep up. Make sure you use one rated at Class 6 or faster, and that you also format it with the camera.
@valordk No, all the cameras are on loan and sent back after the review, so yes, Pentax's problem is just about making one available and shipping it for about 75 bucks. Proves how much they care.
I love the interesting and varied backgrounds you use in this video. Beautifully done! After watching this, as well as part 2, I was thinking of going for the Canon E0S Rebel T3i. Thanks very much for taking the time to post all these reviews! :)
Gordon...Wonderful and tedious job you have been doing for CameraLabs in the past years! I actually recommended friends and customers in Canada, Aus and UK to visit and buy at your web! If you do happen to have work/holidays trips to Asia, do inform me so I can arrange nice shooting places for you. Keep up the great work man! Jim
This is my second year taking photography in my high schhol (now in advanced photography) I know how to develop my own film make prints etc.... I've been usind a 35mm slr and I've been looking at starting to use a dslr now I don't have the biggest budget. What do you think my best option would be ? A t3I or this nikon I'm not a bigenner or an expert either I would be using it for my photoclasses and hopefully in college maybe some video
You really know how to show the upsides and downsides of both cameras well and you actually know what your talking about unlike most. I'm actually looking for a camera, I was thinking the 600 or the new 650. Will you be doing a review of the T4i / 650D?
hello Gordan, your comparison gave a pretty good idea and info on which dslr to go for. Canon 600D it is. I'm a beginner, i'll be doing enthusiastic photography, playing with shutter speed and all. But with 650D in market, got confused again. Should I be checking 650D out, or I buy 600D and invest in a good lens? planning to buy an 18-135mm EF-IS and a marco lens. Please advice.
Hi Gordon, in this review at around 7:30 mins in to the video you switch the cameras and there is significant change in the picture color quality (your shirt color changes drastically).Although this question might sound silly, can you tell us what camera you were using before and after 7:30 mins in the video? Why is there a huge difference in color saturation? I am trying to decide buy one of these two cameras. I prefer better color contrast and quality in my images, which one would you suggest?
Hi Gordon. I'm glad you have uploaded another video. and these cameras are both on my consideration list! I keep hanging on from buying a new camera and in turn I keep waiting for you to review ones that interest me. I don't think there are any comparable reviews on the internet to yours, which are the easiest to understand , most comprehensive and least pretentious . I am wait eagerly for you to compare the g12 with the p7000 and review the fuji x100 and the pentax family!
Very nice review, I was wondering if you knew of a free programme which I could use to convert my canon 550D footage to be useable on my PC? (without having a watermark on the footage), would be very helpful... Thank you
Whoops, yes you're absolutely right. I was thinking of the 550D for some reason. The 600D, 650D and 60D all have flip out screens. Of the three I'd go for the 600D for basic video. If you want something faster and tougher for action photography, get the 60D. If you want something that attempts continuous AF during video, then go for the 650D, but don't expect miracles! If you're happy with fixed focus as you film, then the 600D will be fine.
I am completely new to DSLR's, and haven't done much photography before. Based on yours and others' reviews, I am looking at the Canon T3i right now. However, some people prefer the T2i. Can you give me an opinion on that?
I wanna learn photography so i'm thinking of buying a DSLR..which one should i buy? I researched in the internet and got a lot of options. Nikon D3100, D3200, D5100and Canon 550D, 600D. I wnna buy a camera which is more worth for my money and which doesnt allow me to outgrow it any sooner..I'm not that into videography. It will be greatly useful if the camera is beginner friendly..
Hey Gordon, watched both the parts. Really informative video. I am a beginner and considering these two cameras for some astrophotography and videos. What do you suggest for these purposes?? One thing is at my place t3i costs around 15% more.
sir.. i am in a confusion...between canon 550d or Nikon 5100d or Nikon 3200d.. My main aim is to learn,Low light photography,landscape..... which one is having better image processing cap?? which one should i go for?
@goldenguy12345 if you like filming, 600D is the one to pick.. the articulated lcd screen will help and the video result won't be less than 550D. They both use same sensor, so practically similar result, but 600D has more features
@DavidRyanMiller I had too choose between these two cameras about 7 months ago so going by my personal experience the best thing to help you choose is to get to your local camera shop and hold both the cameras in your hands to see which one you like the best.
@ginostamaria I'm sure the folks at Rode wouldn't like to hear you say that! I used a Rode VideoMic Pro throughout this video. Sure, a lavalier would have been better, but I thought the on-location audio from a shotgun mic was ok...
I'm new to your channel, and it inspires confidence to see how exceptionally good looking the photography is in your videos, especially at the level of cameras you review. It's always a bit odd watching a semi-pro-and-above camera review* that is shot with little imagination. The content is quite excellent, too. Thanks for the work! * New videos. I can hardly blame videos shot before quality skyrocketed.
dear camera labs guy, i need an unbiased opinion. i have researched both very much and arent leaning towards one over the other. what do you think is better/recommend. please.
I love your new hands-on videos, Gordon. My wife called them jokingly "Where in the world is Gordon Lang?" :P Only the audio quality is inconsistent between locations. Have you thought about using a lavalier mic or do you just want to showcase the cameras in-build mics?
hello! i am trying to decided between the canon t3i or the nikon d5100! ive watched a thousand videos and cant decide! i will be taking mostly outdoor photos and want the best camera for my money! please tell me which to buy!
@chapmanvoris It's kind of weird, I figured it out fairly quickly though. When in movie mode, you press the button to flip between viewfinder and LCD to begin recording. Makes no sense, but I think there is a record button on it so that's how I knew.
one of the best review comparisons I've seen so far... And I've seen a lot. Had a hard time trying to understand what you were saying in the classroom part, though... Too much echo. I like more the D5100, and I know a few photographers who highly recommended the Nikon over the Canon, but I'll watch par two to find out.
Hi Gordon, Thank you for your ongoing reviews. I wonder as your video reviews are so thorough, -if you are using a prompter or in general what technique do you use to be able to tell so much and still keep eye contact with the rest of the world :-) ??
I am also planning to buy a DSLR but I am confused.. whether to go for Nikon D5100 or Canon 600D.. I basically want to buy a camera for photograhy and not much for videography. I like Travel, People and Sport Photography.. Please help me in choosing between these two DSLR's.. Thanks a lot !!!!!
Wow your reviews are really amazing but I'm not surw which one to pick.. I love everything about the canon T3i but the grip is just...it feels "cheap" like not safe in my hand. Also, I'm just starting on photography and I think this one would be really good. But I have a question about lenses, can I use lenses from the cameras that used film? or can I only use lenses from the new canon cameras?
@1p2o3i I'm waiting for a sponsorship from Destination Querenstown...! Weeell, all but the user interface clips were recorded with the same Rode Video Mic Pro, and most with it connected to a Canon 5D2, so the inconsistency is with the locations. I could use a lavalier - and perhaps should - but I like the immediacy of filming with a shotgun...
One of the best if not the best video you have made Gordon!Im glad you started making video reviews again.See you on the forums.
I've been searching for a solid review of these two cameras for a while now. Your review is by far the best.
Thanks for the compliments! As for your video question, Canon DSLRs use the same bit rate for 720p as they do for 1080p, so there's no 'saving' on throughput. Any good Class 6 card should be fine for HD video.

i'd just like to say thanks for all the reviews you have done. they're fantastically well spoken and give me more information than any other reviews on the net!
I am happy that you brought back all your videos on YT again. I wish you a greater viewer base this time.
Yes, it's right below the video window in the description.
Best review I've seen for these two cameras so far!
Thank you!
@ActualVideos Thanks! It was mostly filmed with a Canon 5D2.
@spakuloid Thanks! It was mostly filmed with a Canon 5D, although the jetboat segments were filmed with the 600D and D5100.
I must say Gordon Laing is the best and most professional I have seen in delivering a review. He doesn't 'waffle' but gets to the point and at the same time has a pleasant manner. He knows how to set up the visual presentation - he does it in detail so that he gives you close look at how the camera is gripped etc. Cameralabs should be proud of him - a rare find.
@Lumanix1 Thanks! The blue one was just grabbed in the Quiksilver store - wonder if they'd sponsor me?! The others were my own...
Well spotted! I actually filmed the jetboat segments by the river using each of the cameras on test. The intro that segment was filmed with the 600D / T3i. 4 years ago I bought my first DSLR based on your reviews, and here I am again, watching you for advice on getting my second one. :)
D5100 is a great camera. The Nikon D5100 brings the high quality 16.2 megapixel sensor, great low-light performance, and full HD video.

@Tuticrafts Thanks! You can use any Canon lens on a Canon DSLR, but remember all of them will effectively have their focal length multiplied by 1.6 times. So most lenses designed for film won't be very wide on a DSLR.
Thank you, Gordon Laing! You are arguably the best reviewer here on RUclips. Your great work deserve awards like the Oscars or something. :)
Thanks! I'm glad you like my videos!
@UndergroundBerlin I think it would be a great first time DSLR, although if you don't need the articulated screen, wireless flash or movie crop mode, go for the cheaper 550D / t2i.
Thanks for the video, Gordon! Always looking forward to seeing cameralabs videos come up in subscription feed. :)
@Redzo79 It was a very echo-y room, which wasnt obvious when we filmed it. I thought the location was fun though, so kept it in...
I did check out your site and it was what led me to chose the Canon over the Nikon. All the great photos and test videos of each camera and in depth

@cameralabs Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D vs Nikon D5100 review comparison part 2 what about the part 2. I coulndn't find part 2 or 3. can you help me?
@coolave007 Absolutely! You can either set it to Single AF mode, or switch the lens to Manual focus. Both will prevent the constant whirring.
@sedwarg Thanks, I appreciate your kind words!
@Androgenies Thanks for your support!
Hi Davina, all three have exactly the same photo and video quality, so your choice between them boils down to features, speed and price. I'd go for the 650D or 60D if you're serious about video as the flip out screen is useful.
@154graciela I think I mentioned it at the end, but it was a Canon 5D2 with a 50mm f1.2 lens...
I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II mostly with a 50mm lens. But the parts by the jetboats were filmed with the two cameras on test.
@iamrolee Of course I do! They're quite a different operation, but I do like their style.
This was filmed with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, but the jetboat section was filmed with the two cameras on test...
Any DSLR will do for portraits, but the most important thing is to also get a nice bright lens so you can blur the backgrounds. You're looking for a 50mm with a small f-number like f1.8.

@09NXN06 That's the Shotover River in Queenstown, NZ!
@MrRubbish2011 Yep, it's filmed in Queenstown, New Zealand.
Another great review gordon! Great to see u back!
Yep, all of the Nikon 50mm lenses will work on full-frame FX and cropped DX bodies. I have a catalogue of lenses at cameralabs . com and I've stated there if they're compatible with full-frame or not.
@GeorgeMaier That's Queenstown, New Zealand!
@SmileySherief It's right below the video above...
@prettyspoken2007 you mean in the garden? It was the 5D2. Most of the video was with the 5D2.
Always a pleasure to watch your reviews even though I'm not currently interested to either camera you reviewed.
@Dasadorah From Canon, that'd be the 60D. But if you're open to other brands, Sony has some very fast models in its SLT range.
Ok so here's the deal, I'm about to start college & I also fell in love with photography in my senior year. I've decided to take digital photo classes in college & I'm trying to decide on which DSLR I should get. No, the continuous AF is not fast enough to track fast action like that, so between them you may as well get the 600D.
@NscaleAmtrak Sounds like the memory card is too slow to keep up. Make sure you use one rated at Class 6 or faster, and that you also format it with the camera.
@Excalibugi Glad you enjoyed it anyway!
Another great vid as always GL!!! Leaning towards the Canon right now, headed to cameralabs for the rest!!!
Excellent review! Watched the second part on your site as well. Really helped me realize that the 600D is the camera for me.
Thanks!
@Lifestoriesification I must try that sometime, although it's not my 5D2!
Jim
Good question! I was actually using the Canon 600D / T3i to film the Nikon and the Nikon D5100 to film the Canon during the river segment.
@muldelinder You're very welcome! Spread the word!
which camera is better for music videos ? I heard it was the canon but please let me know.
This is my second year taking photography in my high schhol (now in advanced photography) I know how to develop my own film make prints etc.... I've been usind a 35mm slr and I've been looking at starting to use a dslr now I don't have the biggest budget. What do you think my best option would be ? You really know how to show the upsides and downsides of both cameras well and you actually know what your talking about unlike most. I'm actually looking for a camera, I was thinking the 600 or the new 650. Will you be doing a review of the T4i / 650D?
Wow love the cinematic transitions and as always great reviews :)
hello Gordan, your comparison gave a pretty good idea and info on which dslr to go for. Canon 600D it is. I'm a beginner, i'll be doing enthusiastic photography, playing with shutter speed and all.

Why is there a huge difference in color saturation? I am trying to decide buy one of these two cameras. I prefer better color contrast and quality in my images, which one would you suggest?
Thanks Gordon for your swifty reply, the 600d also has flip screen but would you still recommend the 650 and 60?
@Androgenies Thanks! Please tell your friends about my reviews!
@NovaMains I sure was - great museum, unfortunately not so good for recording sound...

Very nice review, I was wondering if you knew of a free programme which I could use to convert my canon 550D footage to be useable on my PC? (without having a watermark on the footage), would be very helpful... Thank you
Yep, that's Queenstown! Maybe see you around sometime!

Also, I'm just starting on photography and I think this one would be really good.
But I have a question about lenses, can I use lenses from the cameras that used film? or can I only use lenses from the new canon cameras?
Hello sir, which one is better in making videos/film in terms of quality. Thank you :)
Great video sir! Can you please tell me which camera you used for this video?
Macro effect(if i am not wrong), is just awesome !!
