Great video and your mom is so wonderful and funny. I know for sure these prices are too high for average Sri Lankan, but I am glad to see that you guys have everything that you need. Even in North America, the grocery prices are so expensive these days, I feel my personal inflation would be more like 20% -30% whenever I shop. Hope things settle down.
It's true we are sheltered as expats with foreign income... I dread what it would be like to be a local and try to survive... And I THANK YOU so much for your support of our charitable endeavors.
Fascinating video, Sami. After watching the grocery bill, food items are indeed expensive in Lanka. However, one can buy anything as long as they have money. Not many countries can say that these days!
John Keells Holdings is the largest listed company in Sri Lanka. Their largest divisions are shipping services, tourism and real estate development. SL supermarkets are an interesting microcosm of Sri Lankan demographics. As Aussies we are astounded at how expensive the supermarkets are in SL. Everything is at least 20% higher than in Australia. Here there are massive complaints at our prices and our minimum wage is 5x higher than SL! If the prices in our supermarkets were of a similar wage/price ratio there would definitely be riots. I think average Sri Lankans have no capacity to shop in supermarkets at all. In a Western country this level of inequality is a recipe for disaster. You can see this problem developing in Britain and if we end up with a recession it will spread to other nations. Sri Lankans show incredible restraint in view of the massive inequality. There are no easy answers but I feel that it is a mistake for the elite to keep pushing trickle down economics in a country so close to the edge. Strengthening agriculture is the real future for SL. This will not benefit the ruling class so will not get the support required. This is shameful. Everyday I read about Sri Lankan businesses moving into AI and corporate services. This is all nonsense when the average Lankan struggles to buy food.
its is NOT an easy place to live in as a LOCAL... as an expat, its easier... I don't know what the future will bring, but keeping my options open to living somewhere warm is #1
