hey dumb question but what specific vallejo metallic paint color did you use? I REALLY dig the look of the speed paint on it, looking more like it stained the silver than painted over it and want to experiment with it but I was really hoping to use the same metal color you guys used to base your models for this video.
@@malal6512 I think it was metal color silver... that line has like 5 very similar color (chrome, aluminum, silver, etc.) but any of them should work great! 🙂
Yeah, hoping that an affordable larger bottle of the thinning medium will be available soon. Many of the speed paints seem quite dark and it would be useful to be able to thin these for use as washes/tinting. Keeping these accessible to folks will certainly make these a staple going forward. Congrats as well on the overall favourable and enthusiastic response from the community.
Many of the finshed test models have a "grainy texture" to them (3:24 is probably the best example). I have seen this in other tests of your speedpaint line-up. How would you go about to limit this?
Here's a tip for the color thing. I do this when recanting my contrast paints, and I plan to do it with these when I get them. Put a layer of white primer on each paint lid and let it dry, then just paint the lids with the speedpaints! It will show an approximation of its highest and lowest shades with the ribbing of the dropper bottle lid, and it gives you a good idea of what the paint will look like on a model. I actually do this with all my paint lids, not just the contrast paints. Makes paint selections so much easier!

Which I also agree can be a pain for the CC because these vids don't just magically appear (see your commentary on the subject, and also Guy's from Midwinter minis for further support). Problem and clarification: But the problem with the building it too early is now in every video of this product that gets released, I am reminded that: I...can't...buy...this...product. Especially because people get, weirdly tribal about paint sometimes, but to the marketing team @ Army I would like to tell them that you might have stumbled a little with such a long lead in and sooo many previews spread out. A little more clustered closer to the...quarter...of release might be better. Markets tend to have ADHD and goldfish memory for advertising dollars. Bumper/Close: Thank you for your super chill content, and your advice with painting, I literally use some of your tutorials when I am introducing newbies to the hobby to demystify it, and I like the vid. @@GauldameGauldame They've been marketing these for about 3 months and have only recently started taking pre-orders. Ever thought that some of the previews are spread out because some content creators can't just drop everything to knock out a video and they might have sat with the paints for weeks or months? There's also the fact that not every hobbyist can afford to just drop $100 at a moment's notice on their hobby and having some lead time gives some them a chance to put a few bucks away, unlike say Games Workshop with their FOMO BS...
@@Gauldame But how about the video? Do you like the video? The Army Painter has a website and a contact us link. Let them know how you feel about FOMO and building hype.
Yeah. I'm a latecomer to the channel, and I really find "comfortable" to watch the videos. I really like the approach, very different from the many flamboyant jokers that crowd the Tube.
Now these are the paints for me. While I love to sit and paint I just don’t have the time it takes to properly paint a couple minis let alone an entire army. I’ve been meaning to give contrast paints a try but I might just have to go with these instead!
So glad to see a more complete review on these. Other content creators discussing the Speed paints have had smaller samples sent to them and I was afraid that said samples might not have been accurately representative of the whole range much in the way Contrast paint it's self can be wildly inconsistent. Thanks Brent, your hard work is appreciated as always.
Right on! I got those smaller packages in the mail too, and I liked what I saw, but I was holding out for the full range review. I guess they were just taking their time to get Sand Golem extra spicy! :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies I love how you approach everything scientific. You can clearly see how the paints work and how each color behaves under different circumstances. It sure is a lot of work but it does pay off! Thanks for doing it the way you do

@@stevejohncockram For you. I've never had a dropper bottle I've liked. I'd rather use GW's pots. They have their issues, but one that is overblown is their sturdiness. For the short bottles I find it's super hard to knock them over. Read as, you need to intentionally knock it over. The tall bottles are a bit tricky, but if my ADHD ass can remember it's there and not knock it over, then other people can too. And if you're going to be putting it in a pallet like you have to when you use a dropper bottle, then close the bottle and you don't have to worry about it. GW pots aren't that bad. You hate them and I respect your opinion, but your subjective opinion isn't fact. Stop treating dropper bottles like a damn cult.
This is the first of your videos I’ve stumbled upon and even though I have no interest in painting miniatures, I found it very satisfying and relaxing, as well as informative!
Thank you so much for doing that color showcase at the end! Many creators would not put as much time and effort into this as you did and that is why I have been following you for quite some time now! So glad I found this channel!
This is the most thorough, non-biased review of these Speedpaints that I have seen. Using them as instructed over matte and gloss, over metalllics, over zenithal, over drybrushed, through an airbrush. You didn't just take the paints do whatever you want with them then complain when it doesn't work as imagined they would without actually trying them first. Well done and a class act all the way.
I’ve been trying these out and they’re awesome. I recommend priming the figures in black and then heavily dry brushing them with white - it really makes the figures pop and adds a cool shading effect. I would also recommend using normal acrylic paints for small details over top of the speedpaint.
At least six months here as well. I had recently bought about six citadel contrast paints and used them with mixed results... Maybe it's time to go back to the brush.
My low point is still spilling a pot of Leadbelcher on a friend's bag, completely ruining it. I've since started transfering GW paints from those vile pots into dropper bottles and I'm far happier this way
A factor I think a lot of people would have wanted to see would have been how well they apply over flatter surfaces as that is always the biggest complaint about Contrast - especially in the interest of an honest review. As much as I hate Army painter paints and brushes, I will try these out, they look like they are pretty good and should be good for mixing and matching with my Contrast paints.
@@Brickfrog427 You're not wrong, but if I'm painting a mini I'm not going to want to try and match colors between the flat and more textured areas, I wanna hit the whole thing with the same paint even if it's not using the speed or contrast paint to its fullest.
I use Speedpaints daily. One of the best things about them: they mix well. I make strawberry blonde hair with fire orange and sand golem that looks like blonde with natural ginger that i can get almost nowhere else without layering over and over. And that is just the beginning. With speedpaint medium i can mix them with lots of other brands inks to make new shades without losing coverage,
The Sand Golem with a silver Undercoat looks soooo nice, I think a store around here is ordering a new batch of these soon, might go out and snatch up a couple of these.
I love that when you put out a review it can be technically crunchy and understandable for the average person. I am excited about these paints and your review is one of the best I have seen so far.
When I first bought mini paints I was baffled by how little information they give you for the price. What pigments are in something called "sand golem"? Is it sunfast? How opaque is it? I'm used to watercolor paint catalogues that write you an essay and an excel sheet on everything (which makes buying paint more fun than I can afford tbh), and felt a little cheated when trying to buy paints for minis that are priced like professional products and sold to knowledgable and interested painters, but described like children's toys. So this review was really helpful, and I liked that you spoke about the pigments being different from each other, and showed how they dry differently!
Take a look at Kimera Kolors - they are the only mini paints actually addressing this I think. Fortunately, we can also use professional paints for mini painting as well (eg. Golden high flow)
Man I feel you on this one! I switched to liquitex acrylic gouache for that reason. I know what I'm mixing and how they will react together and can control how muddy or vibrant its going to be. The ratios are also quite easy to maintain. Wish mini paints would be more ''transparent'' on this. But these paints look like a thing I may enjoy using over my gesso base to color and get rid of the texture to use my good brushes faster.
Frankly this is one of the best review videos I think I've ever seen, the range of tests you've done is remarkable, thank you! I'll be using this as a reference guide at a later date I suspect! :)
this video swayed me! This is exactly what you want to see when considering a new product. It was a thoughtful look at the product, and the timelapse of the paint actually drying was great!
Honestly would never have even considered using contrasts over silver, that is such a useful comparison next to the white undercoats. What a thorough and brilliant video. Great job Brent, thank you.
I don’t comment hardly ever on RUclips and videos but I just wanted to say your videos are awesome. I really appreciate the down to earth attitude you have and I think that’s what makes your videos good and easy relatable to everyone that watches them.
This is really a good video, it showed everything I was curious to know about these new colors (pros and cons, price, what to use them for, different techniques), the cherry on the cake being the last seconds dedicated to showing us what each colour truly looks like on a mini. Being a totally rookie painter with no interest for spending hours in painting my 40k and Infinity miniatures, these colours could be a serious help. Thanks a lot ^^.
@@GoobertownHobbies thanks. I just wish they sold them also as single colours, rather than only in boxes, but I hope that they will eventually do this.
Thanksa I'm a chemist as well and love seeing your careful "experiment design". The scientific and thorough approach to testing stuff is so much appreciated.
Great video!!! Easily the most extensive vid I've seen so far, without being THAT much longer than most other current reviews! I've seen some people who like the fact that the Speedpaints are not too similar to Contrast in terms of coverage and finish so they can have individual uses, mixing and matching between the ranges, which I also look forward to! I have the whole set of Contrasts, but I'm also getting the full set of Speedpaints as well. Again I really appreciate the different priming options you went through - it was more extensive than any others I've seen and showed even more interesting end results that can have individual uses! Keep up the good work, Brent! :D
I've been a fan of Contrasts for a long time, but the two things I hate about them are the price and the bottles. This seems like the perfect addition (not so much replacement I suppose)!
I wouldn’t bother, all the paint colors are exactly the same, if you already have contrast paints there’s no point in buying these unless you run out of a pot of contrast. It really irritates me that they just ripped off the colors 1 for 1 instead of making some different colors that people who already have contrast paint would actually buy. You don’t poach someone from a job by offering them the exact same money and benefits, you need to offer more, and Army Painter is offering the same if not less.
So, you like being charged more for a worse product, hmm? That explains why you like GW. Speedpaint has similar colors - because both GW and AP are covering the same basic colors - shocking, I know. Speedpaint is a lot more consistent across the line - Contrast is a great idea, with mediocre implimentation. There are Contrast colors that are excellent - Wyldwood will be remaining as one of my main choices. Others are horrible globby crap - the Dark Angels Green will be replaced with Speedpaint. But you gleefully ignore the price gouging that GW routinely engages in. The Speedpaints have moderate improvements over Contrast - and are more reasonably priced. A better product at a better price.
@@sindrimyr2423 It’s a new color range. Of course they’re going to offer all the basic colors people need. This is how paint ranges work. If the basic colors sell well, and at this price point I don’t see how they can’t, I’m sure they’ll expand the range.
@@bogatyr2473 yeah, sure they’ll expand the range at some point. When will that be? In 2 years? It already took them almost a year to release this range, they gave us 23 colors that’s no excuse for every single one of them to be the same at the colors of contrast. At least 3 should be totally unique.
I honestly had no real interest in these paints. However, after seeing some of your test models, mostly the white with Plasmatic Bolt and High Lord Blue, I am tempted to try a few colors. Thanks for the amazing breakdown!
It was nice to see that the paints can be used with left handed brushes as well as normal brushes. I don’t think this was covered in the video but I’m sure it’s noteworthy for some painters that feel neglected. Great video thanks for sharing! 😃👍
I have never painted anything before. But I did recently pick up Return to Dark tower and all the expansions and I am interested in seeing how much of a investment it would be to paint the little guys. Out of all the miniature model painting videos out there, this one spoke to me the most. I like it, get these paints, do this, and it looks good. Sold.
At first I was planning on just grabbing the starter set...but after seeing this I realize there are a good many colors that I want from the mega....may have to just bite the bullet and pay the extra XD.
@@GoobertownHobbies lol, for me its more that Cloudburst Blue and Purple Academy. Printed up some OnePageRules aliens and those would be perfect. Though I'm also really wanting Grim Black, Slaughter Red, Dark Wood, and now that medium.
Maybe it's because GW prices have made me cynical, but I was expecting way worse than $99. Definitely going to have to pick this set up. Thanks for the informative review!
This is probably my favorite part about speedpaints coming out. They were designed to go over white, whereas contrast is best over an off-white. It just makes me think these will work even better with traditional Zenithal priming.
The one purchased paint pot from GW was enough to put me off their paints for good. Loved the jab about it. Getting it onto my pallete was annoying and it did indeed dry out despite being closed. I still have paints in dropper bottles I'm using that I purchased well before that pot. Nice pigment load on these, and a pretty fair price. I still have inks to play around with before I consider buying more but I'll keep these in mind.
I really appreciate you doing test for each colour with different base coats, despite your comment that you barely touched the surface, i feel like for a product review it was actually fairly comprehensive, and gives a decent idea how the paints behave
Amazing review, thanks for all your work. I have also fallen in love with contrasts, as its so easy to paint and then highlight. I will be picking up a box of these however as the price seems fair and they dont come in those stupid pots which I knocked over reaching to skip a YT add. 😒
I love how thorough your reviews are and would love in turn to see your results if you have any issues with base layers of Speedpaint reactivating when you paint over them with any other acrylics. Seems a hot topic at present and definitely a deal breaker for many (including myself) on whether or not to invest in these paints so I’m curious if you’d encountered this in testing? Or would test this in future?
I already bought a bunch of contrast paints, so there's always room for them till the pots run dry :) They work very similarly, so there's no reason to stop using contrast if there's a color you love.
I'm not throwing out my contrast paints, but at half the price and a better bottle... yeah I'm pretty sure I'm never going to buy a contrast paint again... MAYBE if I was doing a group project and needed to standardize a color or something...
@@markgrehan3726 Because they are more prone to having the paint dry out unless you are meticulous in cleaning the dried bits from the lid - faster 'dry out' of paint = more sales for GW
With increased accessibility for 3D printing and now an inexpensive time saver paint line, the bar to entry for war games is the lowest it's ever been.
Not only have you been waiting months and months for them to come out with this paint, but even better, you’ll be happy to know that EVERY paint in the speed paint range is complete 1:1 copies of contrast paint colors. So not only do you get to wait months and months for it, you also get the luxury of getting the exact same colors that already existed!
The bottles look nice, but how are you supposed to put the shading on your workbench without citadel bottles? Mine has a lovely agraax earthshade and biel-tan green tone.
I recently got the entire line of AP Speed Paints as a random gift by my wife. I've NEVER been able to finish as many models as I have with these paints.! I literally finished 11 miniatures in less than 2 hours just the other evening, and while I have the entire Warpaints line by AP already, I'm not using a lot of those anymore.. Maybe I'll return to those when the novelty fades, but for now, this is the absolute best thing that ever happened to my productivity, in terms of painting miniatures! @TheArmyPainter i er fandemer vilde! Elsker jeres produkter!
... "I know that there are some people out there that make excuses for Games Workshop's paint pots ... but, um, those people are wrong." I love that statement! Thank you again for taking the time to share your insight into this product and explaining the science behind it. I enjoy your channel for that reason.
I noticed I had shifted to the brighter Contrast paints, probably mostly because they work better on a zenithal prime than the more muted ones and they mix a lot better. I will replacing them with these when they run out.
It's more than likely that your new favorite colors are single pigment based. The more pigments thrown into a particular standard color, the worse it will mix. If only there was a device that allowed us to select the most mixable colors from a given line, tweak their viscosities and such, and mix our own optimal color range on demand, like.. TriaDart II :) It was developed to allow us to master the best parts of most paint lines. You might only need an understanding of the most consistent primary paints in each line, some color theory, and your own style, in order to achieve this.
im not sure if i missed it in the video, but i also dont see this in the comments. You cannot paint over these. the paint will reactivate. these are made to be the be what contrasts were advertised as. Ergo; one coat and done. So you cannot use them how many Contrasts are used, as glazes. These have a very limited use. You *can* paint over them but only if you put a varnish on top first.
I haven't had any issues painting over these colors. The big thing I do is make sure to let the paint dry well between coats. I usually give the speed paints fifteen to twenty minutes to dry before going over them. I used a lot of them on the models out of the Kroot box and the paint seems to stick just fine, regardless of brand. Just gotta let it dry completely first.
@@GoobertownHobbies it's pretty awesome. I'm excited to actually use paints like this. I have 2-3 contrasts. And I do like them, it's just the steep price tag that always prevented me from doing more with CP. Y'know?

It is a brilliant video. This is how you show the effects of the paints with a great reference in the end. It is not like "look how I painted my mini with these paints" but "this is how this paint looks on this model and it is your choice". I love it
Have you experienced the issue Tale of Painters encountered in their review? That if you apply speedpaint over dried speedpaint, it reactivates the dried speedpaint? It bleeds and mixes into the new paint layer, ruining it, unless you seal every coat, glaze, or wash application.
That sounds like the effect of a flow-aid (such as that seen in Vallejo airbrush flow improver). Contrast does the same if you apply it before it is fully dried. I could imagine these army painter paints take an even longer time to dry. Solution would be to wait 24-48 hours - but I can see how that would not be convenient for many painters! You can use flow improver to ‘erase’ acrylic that hasn’t fully cured. It’s a neat technique.
I didn't test this widely, but it's a valid concern. I waited ~8 hours between coats and worked quickly with subsequent layers. I didn't have a problem, but I was vigilant to avoid reactivation. I'm glad stahly is looking into this!!! :-)
I've decided recently to get back into minis and I want to say, this video did a wonderful job showing off the range of these paints. The biggest eye opener for these paints was the black undercoat with white either spray or dry brush. That REALLY made the colors stand out. Thank you!
Super dope review. Thoroughly enjoyed learning and listening to your chill vibes after a long day at work, this got my mind right and ready to put down some paint.
Thanks for the paint test. These look very useful and fun. Especially not needing to thin them for an airbrush. I mostly only watch for your amazing goofy quirkiness and your face!! Keep up your amazingness my dude.
I have this video saved right to my phone so I can review that last minute whenever I go to use my Speed Paints. It's a wonderful show case and has helped me immensely. Just starting to paint and push myself to learn new techniques. Over heated gun barrel for my flamers, plasma gunners and melta gunners were the last technique I jumped into and the showcase of the colors helped me pick the right colors the first time and saved having to redo multiple times. Thank you!
First video of yours I have seen. This was extremely thorough. Purchased the large box of these to share with some friends who are new to the hobby. Thank you for your effort in informing all of us.
One takeaway from this video and Squidmar’s is that the low viscosity (lower than Contrast paints’) is a real boon: whereas with Contrast paints pooling can erase fine details - it appears the Army Painter Speedpaints don’t have this problem - despite the pools seen in this video, they didn’t dry as solid clumps! I’m sold!!
I love the pooling effect personally. The idea that what I see is what I get seems like you'd be able to brush out any heavy spots before it dries too much.
I found this really enjoyable to watch/listen to even though I'm not even in this hobby and randomly ended up here. Your voice is super soothing, the explanations are clear, and the painting footage is really satisfying.

You've got lots of time to spare. Thank you for spending it here 😁
Now these are the paints for me. While I love to sit and paint I just don’t have the time it takes to properly paint a couple minis let alone an entire army. I’ve been meaning to give contrast paints a try but I might just have to go with these instead!
Oh yeah, you'll love these! :-)

@@clarkey7760 i dont need to watch someone talk about it to know what everyone who has worked with artist paints already knows, containers that you can drop out of are better.

@@DrMcCoy How do you do that without wasting a lot of paint?
A factor I think a lot of people would have wanted to see would have been how well they apply over flatter surfaces as that is always the biggest complaint about Contrast - especially in the interest of an honest review. As much as I hate Army painter paints and brushes, I will try these out, they look like they are pretty good and should be good for mixing and matching with my Contrast paints.
Dana Howl's video looks at a few of these on space marine shoulder pads compared to contrast paints, you might wanna check that out!
I do think that applying contrast/speedpaints to really flat surfaces is kind of a waste, they really work best with textured surfaces.
@@Brickfrog427 You're not wrong, but if I'm painting a mini I'm not going to want to try and match colors between the flat and more textured areas, I wanna hit the whole thing with the same paint even if it's not using the speed or contrast paint to its fullest.
The sped up footage of drying paint is actually amazing. You could make a whole video of just that. Love it.
I honestly might make that video hahaha :-)
Oh you have me tempted, the kind of laid back sales pitch gets me every time 😜
I use Speedpaints daily. One of the best things about them: they mix well. I make strawberry blonde hair with fire orange and sand golem that looks like blonde with natural ginger that i can get almost nowhere else without layering over and over. And that is just the beginning. With speedpaint medium i can mix them with lots of other brands inks to make new shades without losing coverage,
The Sand Golem with a silver Undercoat looks soooo nice, I think a store around here is ordering a new batch of these soon, might go out and snatch up a couple of these.
right? I'm on Team Sand Golem for sure :-)
Sand golem over silver looks better than retributor armor and probably covers way better and you can't change my mind.
I love that when you put out a review it can be technically crunchy and understandable for the average person. I am excited about these paints and your review is one of the best I have seen so far.
I really love that Goobertown scientific and systematic approach to testing out products like this 👍
THE most professional review. Thanks.
Man thank you for actually going through all the colours and not just using 1 or 2 as an example. This gave me all the info I was looking for!
Those metallic basecoated minis came out fantastic!
heck yeah!! :-)
They really did!!
Try a green or a blue/green mix over a copper or gold basecoat.
Some of the best verdigis I have seen.
"but ummm, those people are wrong." Perfect example of backing the right decision. Nice go, Goobertown.
I wish mini paints were more like artist paints and actually told you what pigments were in there! it's so frustrating to have to guess!!! :-)
@Goobertown Hobbies Thank you so much for your thorough and interesting video, once again great information and delightfully presented!

Oh goober time! Love your videos Brent thanks for your hard work in entertaining us and sharing with us your time and joy of painting miniatures.
This is really a good video, it showed everything I was curious to know about these new colors (pros and cons, price, what to use them for, different techniques), the cherry on the cake being the last seconds dedicated to showing us what each colour truly looks like on a mini. @@GoobertownHobbies thanks. I just wish they sold them also as single colours, rather than only in boxes, but I hope that they will eventually do this.

Hey thanks! Have fun with these when you get them :-)
I've been a fan of Contrasts for a long time, but the two things I hate about them are the price and the bottles. This seems like the perfect addition (not so much replacement I suppose)!
I don't mind the pots, I don't like how inconsistent contrasts are our how you gotta guess how it's gonna look
Holy cow, this review was beyond perfect. Thank you for being so thorough! I've preordered the whole set from my local store!

I have never painted anything before. But I did recently pick up Return to Dark tower and all the expansions and I am interested in seeing how much of a investment it would be to paint the little guys. This is probably my favorite part about speedpaints coming out.
They were designed to go over white, whereas contrast is best over an off-white.

Nice to see more options available, I think there is still room to use Contrast honestly though.
I already bought a bunch of contrast paints, so there's always room for them till the pots run dry :) They work very similarly, so there's no reason to stop using contrast if there's a color you love.
I mean they don't have a analogue for every contrast. They seem to be missing Akhelian Green, Magos Purple, etc.
I'm not throwing out my contrast paints, but at half the price and a better bottle... yeah I'm pretty sure I'm never going to buy a contrast paint again... MAYBE if I was doing a group project and needed to standardize a color or something...
@@GoobertownHobbies Yeah I don't know why G.W stays with that paint pot style.

@@psibitful2 my standard paints are Kimera Pure Pigments, so yes, you are correct I prefer, well, pure pigments.
@@mycatistypingthis5450 Nice. This is a very professional and artistic range.
Well then...that's a hard to beat combo!
im not sure if i missed it in the video, but i also dont see this in the comments.
That prismatic blue makes me think of Alpha legion. And I love it.
pretty sweet eh? :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies it's pretty awesome. I'm excited to actually use paints like this. I have 2-3 contrasts. And I do like them, it's just the steep price tag that always prevented me from doing more with CP. Y'know?

And I just got a bunch of gw Contrast for christmas...

@@GoobertownHobbies gonna use them to paint a lot of Bretonnians.
@@Nikelajsen there ya go! :-)
There’s no mention of the re-activation issue people are reporting. Would be good to follow up on this
What does this mean?
I've decided recently to get back into minis and I want to say, this video did a wonderful job showing off the range of these paints. The biggest eye opener for these paints was the black undercoat with white either spray or dry brush. That REALLY made the colors stand out. Thank you!

Yours and Dana's videos on these are A+
aww thankee!! :-)
I’m sold!!
@@redscope897 I mean every review I've seen all say they are better than contrast for a lower price.
