The Speedpaint 2.0 is for someone like me. Full-time job, kids, maybe have an hour or so a night to paint. Right now I go model by model, but if I wanted to speedpaint, I could paint 10-20 models one color at a time and be done with 20 of them in 3 days (3 colors) vs. 3 models . I think the mistake with Speedpaint is thinking about it as a professional paint range vs. what The Army Painter always states, helping things get painted so they get on the table faster. I say this as someone who has used very little contrast paint of any brand, but own some large horde armies.
Ourwhole goal with SP is to hel get models on the table faster and to make painting easier and more enjoyable for beginners or hobbyists pressed for time. Our motto is Get More Time for Gaming after all :) We hope you enjoy them!
I've found SpeedPaints great for fast painting (especially my Warmaster and Epic armies) but they work surprisingly well for blending and other advanced techniques on heroes and monsters.
I'm in the same boat as you, mate, I'm seriously considering getting the new 2.0 Mega Set for the exact same reason. I love to paint, but my time to do so is limited.
"if you just".... if you just ignore the instructions, you can have things happen you don't want. I appreciated the "i waited 2 hours cuz they said to, and it worked right" I'm an engineer, so i appreciate the fair shake following manufacturers guidelines
"If you just..." reminds me of the "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from a rigged demo" variation of Clarke's Third Law. When you can define the conditions of a test as narrowly as you choose, you can control how the results come out.
This is so weird... The Speedpaint 2.0 actually dries so much quicker then the others that if you dont clean it up instantly you will have a problem. Then I realized going back to your colors presented at 8:38 that you are using the 1.0 colors that was known for long drying times. Are you sure you used 2.0 colors? The bottles in the video do not have the 2.0 branding.
The contrast paints mostly all look really nice, but they, ironically enough, almost completely lack contrast. Overall I was most impressed with Speedpaint 2.0. I want to get a set.
I've been looking at the Speedpaint 2.0. And What I like is that even if you do want to use the paints to get a solid base/wash it doesn't stop you from adding other mids or stronger edge highlights, it's just a way to speed up the initial slog of doing the base/wash/re ap mid tone.
they are best used in conjunction with other tech. Like cutting them down to do pseudo-glazing that takes a fraction of the time, but still looks amazing when you add your traditional layering highlights on top. they are great at shading in stuff because of how the pigment works. this is the thing contrast is best for IMO. pushing pigment to an area you want to be shaded. It's essentially the new part of "slap chop". The whole "underpainting/shading" has been around for a very long time in mini painting, but with contrast paints you can now direct the pigment way better than you could by just using washes and inks. means if you can lay down a nice dry brushed Zenithal type effect (but very easy to get wrong and end up chalky, I'd advice watching Byron from Artis Opus to get an idea on moisture control, as this is. This makes or breaks the step) then you use the contrasts to build your shadows from the dark points. you end up with a mini that is deceiving to the eye. For me this is true speed painting. learning a combination of tech that makes minis look better than they should for how long has been spent on them. Honestly though that dry brush stage is so imporant if you want to trick the eye though. if you can tell it's a dry brush (chalky etc) then you just register it as a slap chop, but if you get the transitions smooth then it looks like it was glazed. really works. also the other trick is not going black and white, and actually going with colours instead. like if you want a sickly, nurgle yellow/green you would start with zandri dust, and then dry brush on Orgyn camo. that way you have much more space to work in shadows with the brown, and the Ogryn camo is a nice, sick green with a lot of yellow in it for a base for your highlights. then when you apply your sepia wash (or probably like a nazdreg yellow contrast with a bit more brown in it, not sure, if you can cut a sepia wash from contrast it would be really nice) you get natural transitions starting. You would then go in with a medium bone shade with a much lighter dry brush to pick out the highlights. you don't leave it there though. you go with a lighter shade (krieg khaki is good as it has some of that yellow/green to it) and you do some layering highlights as well. it's about combining the different tech. Sorry if you are really advanced (i have no way of knowing this) but I just felt like sharing some info. maybe someone reads this who could do with the tips. I can't iterate enough how important getting that smooth zenithal with the dry brush down is though. if it looks chalky, it's going to show through. this can be be used for more grim dark paint schemes though, where you are going to be doing a lot of stippling anyway.
Keep in mind that there have been reports of Speedpaint 2.0 cracking, and there seem to be a few reasons for this - heat and humidity, how you prime your models, how much paint you apply, and even the paints not being thin enough have been cited as causes.
@@michaelbrand1173 I thought about selling my citadel, but decided against it because I have a lot of unopened pots and I'd never get a decent price for them. you always get low balled with 2nd hand paint collections, as people will always say "well what you're lying about the pots being full" easier to do in person, but I wouldn't sell them online. also most citadel paint is good, it's only really their colours with a lot of white in them ,that suck. so their bone colours, their whites etc, get vallejo or something or AK interactive who honestly make the best paint IMO. I sold some Citadel paints in like 2012 and I got seriously low balled on them, selling them on ebay. lost a lot of money on them. I ended up buying most of them again as well, so wouldn't do that again. Just keep your paints, if you are into this hobby long time, you will use it all. I now have around 500 pots of paint, around 3 boxes full of citadel as well. Just use AK for your light shades, or Vallejo. I use Vallejo game colour for my bone colours, but I use AK for my white. Vallejo model colour white is good as well though.
When you accidentally get speedpaints onto a primed area of the model it might make sense to rewet and remove the smudge with a wet brush. Use the non permanent quality to your advantage instead of trying to cover the smudge with primer
I'm with you and looking forward to the 2.0 set. I do agree with his point that if you're trying to speed paint a single mini in one session, the dry time could be a pain. Forgot one of the big benefits of the dry time though, is wet blending is super easy with them. I think the Vallejo will also have that benefit.
I agree and did pre-order the 2.0 set. it is a lose/lose for army painter if the drying time was shorter or longer it would make a difference when most so called painters do not already like the paints they make. i personally love them, but i am not a youtuber or influencer i just like painting minis.
@@haukke Ive seen someone use a paint wash over dried (not 2 hours) speedpaint, and it seemed to do the trick. It was an Army Paint soft tone wash, and it seemed to seal the Speedpaint so that when he continued painting, there was no reactivation (like was shown in the 2.0 stream after 2+ hours of drying)
I have both Express and AP 1.0 sets and I found that the Express is really weak and actually isn’t as smooth as the AP. I also love that you can blend AP because of the longer drying time (the Express in my opinion dries too fast to do anything, the minute I try to « move » the paint, it leaves a mark). I was really hopeful when I saw that Vallejo came out with a contrast paint but I find myself mixing it with a bit of Speedpaint. This gives it some of the properties of AP as well as diminishing the reactivation time. As for Citadel, the price is horrible and I think that the new contrast paint are more like normal paint, no contrast at all! Sorry for the rant, it is just my opinion.
Fully agree. I’m a pretty basic painter, and couldn’t really get any decent results using citadel paints. Picked up some speed paints to see how they compared, and they are far more forgiving for a novice painter like myself. I can get some pretty nice results with the speed paints, and they’ve built up my confidence to start trying out some new things
I haven't tried Vallejo, but between Speedpaints 1.0 have completely replaced almost my entire Contrast set. Just noticeably better results with them. Longer drying time isn't an ussue
@@RumpIeforeskin if you need me to spell out for you. if your speed painting your batch painting. if your batch painting its unlikely you will even be going over the same area on the same day if you only have an hour or two to paint.
I have 20ish contrast paints, and the complete sets of speedpaint 1.0 and xpress colour (though i haven't really used the xpress colour much yet) I'll say this. The correct choice for EVERYONE right now is speedpaint and/or xpress colour. Becuase of 1 reason- competition. We all need to get behind variations of contrast paints so other companies other than GW are incentivised to continue to develop and expand their ranges. If we can use vallejo and army painter options now, in 2-5 years time we'll all have all of the choices and can pick and choose how we want.
Never knew that trick about layering speed paint blue first then black, woulda been useful to know before I got started to work on some jade falcon epsilon galaxy mechs I'm workin on lol
Big Vallejo fan and I had huge reservations based on the bottle colour for Cardinal Purple, but it dried beautifully to a great shade of purple and gave me a really interesting reaction with the colourshift glaze. My Emperor's Children army run the gamut of purple shades, but this one felt the most satisfying and that's after spending a lot of time very happy with Game Color Warlord Purple.
Follow on comment for clarity sake, I've used vallejo based interpretations of a number of Warhipster paint treatments for some of my armies or sets of models, I've found the steps much easier to follow and you give each paint enough time that I can make a considered decision on a vallejo alternative (or if I need to just plump for the Citadel one)
Great video! One point worth mentioning is that due to the matt nature of the XPress colours they don’t really work over metallics as they dull the shine
The thing about contrast and speed paints is as you say. People like different brands and stick to them. For me, I like that AP is working with the community and are pretty well priced. Citadel or GW is a company that is really good but really pricy as well. But the thing that they are not working with their community is a bit, that i dont like about them. Still using both
For me, i am not a great painter but i love the latest contrast the Yellows especially are some of the best yellows i have ever had speed paint or not. i also still paint mostly from the pot so having that option with contrast is a big winner for me.
Lots of interesting points made, I do have alot of contrast paints but the longer working time on the others really gets me thinking about picking the express colours up when they start getting alot more into the UK Has alot of shops around my area do hold the other Vallejo ranges not so much army painter stuff. Thanks for the helpfull video
This has been awesome. I have struggled with my contrast paint being uneven and although I am not there yet your channel has helped me so much with how to use them and this helps me understand what options I have now
The hero we need! This was a great video, and definitely informative. I appreciated your approach to the review, and the attempt at being as non biast as possible. I have had my eye on the speedpaint 2.0, but as someone who doesn't have all day to wait for things to dey, I think you saved me some money. Feels good to get off the fence.
I like the goal post metaphor. We have really different goal posts, and that's OK. I've experienced some of the issues others have reviewed with APSP1, but it's not been enough to frustrate me, and I'm still having fun.
Going off just colors alone I really like the black you achieved with the Vallejo but the purple leaves a lot to be desired however the purple from the Citadel Contrast is excellent. I'm just getting into the hobby and am preparing to paint my first army so I suppose my opinion doesn't mean much here but right now I'm personally leaning toward a either Citadel or Vallejo...I like the more matte finish you get with Vallejo but some of those Citadel paints really have great color effects.
I started with Contrast paints and I do like them, but it was frustrating having to learn how to paint with each colour individually because they all behaved differently. I'm selling them now because the Speedpaint 2.0 colours are so consistently easy to use and look gorgeous. Also cheaper and better bottles. Also GW sucks.
This was a really interesting video. I've been using the Speedpaints 1.0 and will likely upgrade to the Complete 2.0. I mostly use them for boardgames so I fall into the exact category you mentioned; a large group of minis at one time, painted in batches. I also do a lot of short hobby sessions during the week, so I generally won't be ready to do the next step in the same night. I'll probably use them less for single minis (bosses, anything for Warhammer, etc) but I have standard acrylics for that.
It cost so much money for the average noob to find and test paints they like. It's become obvious to me some brands will have a better version of the "same" color than others, but one brand is not always the best. The problem I have is finding out what brand has the best of each color. (as a noob, best to me is coverage. Painting multible layers is such a drag)
Interesting result. I absolutely love Broadsword Silver. It gives perfect steel metallic. Maybe uou haven't shaked it for long enough ? If bottle stays static for some time it settele down metal flakes.
Thank you for this thorough review. Pity you’ve had such an issue with AP. I don’t know what I’m doing right, but thankfully I’ve never had to face it. Even with 1.0.
Great video, I found this much more informative than a lot of the other speed paint videos. Im in the process of trying to choose a range to go with and everyone will be different but I really like the look of the vallejo xpress range, the lighter colour seems to me to give the best value range that would work with a nice zenithil airbrush. The others although nice are just too dark for me although I do see a lot of people saying speed paint 2.0 is better so I'm still undecided.
Honestly, just take what you need from various lines. I’ve been priming with Army Painter, slapchopping with Vallejo, and painting on top with Speedpaint 2.0 for beautiful results. Then a couple layers and highlights with Citadel. Never once have I had to “take a break” and wait for drying nor have I gotten reactivation. But I’m not a big fan of the bronze and silver metallics. The good is actually quite nice! But I just use citadel for silver and copper and even black. I consider myself a slow-ish painter but even this method has me finishing infantry in approx 1hr.
I know another RUclipsr had good luck with the 1.0 range of SpeedPaints because she was doing an old professional mini painter trick of using a hair dryer to more quickly dry the paint. Would that have set the SpeedPaint 2.0 more quickly, so there isn't a 2 hour wait?
That's what I do and it seems to be ok. Would prefer not to have to but the flow, coverage and final result of SpeedPaint seems to be noticeably better than the other brands.
Great video as ever. The terrific thing is, of course, you don't have to choose. The GW, Vallejo or Army Painter police won't come knocking at your door if you mix and match paints from their brands on the same model. Maybe you want a more pastel shade from the Xpress Colour range for for softer fabrics on a model, but really like a certain shade from a Speedpaint for the armour, and a Contrast paint for the skin. You don't need to invest in the whole range and nail their colours (hah!) to your mast. Pick, choose and use any of them however you want. What a time to be alive.
I don't really subscribe much and like videos even less.. but I really enjoyed your video.. Looking to get back into Warhammer (mostly fantasy) butIi will definitely watch your armor video for ideas on Bertonnia in the future. GREAT JOB!
I enjoy very much using the AP Speedpaints and "abusing" the reactivation factor to blend, get rid of splodges and mistakes, and do weird color contrasts (no pun intended) difficult to achieve with other brands. Plus, their properties work kinda... better than GW Contrast paints on flatter surfaces - sorry Warhipster, I do not have your magical hand dealing with those large armor panels. Yeah, you need to seal them down with airbrush/spraycan varnish. Bummer. Otherwise, regular Contrast paints have an excellent range and once you get used to some quirks (Shyish Purple I'm looking at you and you silly brother Dark Angels Green), you get great results, even though you have to plan more accurately the paintscheme and steps involved. The reliability is offset by the less freeform approach, so to speak.
i just find the speed paints more consistent in coverage, and overall easier to control. They arent as good as filtering as contrast, but they come in dropper bottles. At the end of the day whatever the hell gets you painting and playing is the right choice. I know having the speed paints has inspired me to get my army done, and maybe try some more advanced things on my leaders to help them stand out more.
I suspect the Speed Paint silver not quite being what was expected vs Iron Warriors base, is because they are for different purposes. Iron Warriors is more heavily pigmented and meant to cover flat and opaque. The Speed Paint silver is meant to be slightly translucent, so is best used over other colours (or mixed with other Speed Paints for interesting colour fun). It's not meant to cover up colours below as an opaque paint might. It does mean it's less generally useful, more a "special effect" type paint. I still go for opaque metallics when I'm doing them for the most part.
Great video. My bottles of Speed Paint 2.0 all say 2.0 on them. But I noticed in the video that the bottles of speed paint used here do not have that designation. They just say Speed Paint... I am not positive that the paint that was used for the Army Painter test was actually Speed Paint 2.0. Maybe 2.0 has been around long enough now that they've dropped the 2.0 designation? I don't know and I am not accusing anyone of anything. Either I am wrong and Speed Paint is now just Speed Paint and 2.0 has been dropped from the label or an honest mistake was made. I've used GW, AP, and just started using Vallejo (contrast, speed, xpress). My biggest problem with speed paint in general is that occasionally I'll come across a color that's simply too opaque and all of the dry brushing and/or zenithal priming I've done gets covered up in a solid wall of color. I've started having a test model on standby and I try out any new paint first. I've found exceptional colors from all three brands. I've been painting for a couple of years now so I am still not very good but am getting better. These kinds of videos help a great deal. Thanks for the video.
So my thoughts after using them a while. I am in the camp of speedpaints 2.0, everything but the metals I can use pretty much like contrast paints, find a better match to the color I am looking for, and have more consistent and easier working time. On top of this I am in the boonies and the internet is the only way for me to reliably get paints and having them available on Amazon just makes it accessible quickly (for internet). For all metals I precoat in duraluminum by vallejo before putting down any metallic contrast, it is an extra step but produces much better metal colors including if I want a green metallic sword for some reason. In regards to price vallejo is the best but are so difficult to find. Speedpaints are much cheaper than contrast paints though especially considering the larger amount of paint per bottle. Lastly my personal gripe is Citadels pots, everyone else has gone away from this for good reason, it is not the ideal way to do things especially if mixing. With Speedpaint 2.0 and pro acryl and even Vallejo game color, I very rarely find myself using Citadel any more, they just seem dated in comparison to the newer lines. I am interested in trying out the new fanatic line and seem how well army painter does, not because I want to replace my favorites, but have more options is simply better. Good review, thank you for putting in the time to make this video.
Still the undisputed king of metalics is the Vallejo Metal Color line. I have tried just about all the hobby paint lines version of metalics and they all fall short! That being said looks like they are only halfway there with the Express color line.
Damn, I just ordered The Vallejo XPress colours full set, I regret not going for the Army Painter Speedpaints, the Vallejo range seems to be missing pigments
that was my experience today. used a Templar White (light gray) on a white primed model and everything shows through. going to order some Speedpaint 2.0 and see if that is any better since I usually prime with white.
I keep getting distracted by how nice your hands look. Just really well-kept and soft-looking. Sorry, it's a bit of an artist (illustrator) thing, my brain immediately goes "AESTHETICALLY PLEASING, WANNA STUDY AND DRAW" haha! Also really appreciate the way you point out biases in the beginning and approach this from the standpoint of individial needs rather than objective superiority.
Are those really speedpaint 2.0 though? My bottles clearly say 2.0 on the label. The ones you have look like the original. I've tested the 2.0 ones and I've never had any reactivations after 30 mins of drying.
This was a great video. I've only been painting around a year and I just got some 1.0 speedpaints and really like them. I'll likely get the complete set. Great advice about the base coating, I never would have thought to do it because the speedpaints are heavily advertised as "one coat and done." Do you have any advice on white speedpaints? I can't seem to get anything more than a grey out of them..
If you are using the Army Painter Holy White, it needs to be shaken for a long time and then thinned with speed paint medium for it to produce a good result. I then layer over the top with white paint to make sure the highlights are white. It can take a few (thin) coats of paint to get the highlights looking bright enough.
I know I'm late to reply, but I didn't see this mentioned anywhere in the comments. Any of these paints will have their drying time change dependent on how humid it is in your painting area. This might be affecting your 2hr dry time. I wait 30mins at most with speedpaints 2.0 and I can put more layers on top. I do live in a very dry location (10-30% humidity throughout the year and that's with a humidifier in my room).
Ace video - I had a chuckle at the "who are the Army Painter ones for?" - agreed they're not for me either, but lots of minis, two or three colours.... like, historical armies. Which is (theoretically) what Army Painter's core audience is. It's fascinating as much of what they make is still best suited for that audience, even if it's really not how they market it any more.
the new vallejo ones are supposed to great. I've seen entire Imperial Guard tanks painted in them (at least the majority of it, some details like metals were not) and it looked great. I didn't think it was possible to really paint flat plastic areas with a speed paint like contrast, but you can do it with the xpress paints. I'm not sure if they are just different as not used them yet, but I love what I see. I really like contrast as well though, but I use them to cut glazes and washes with mostly. You can use them to do quick face shading and bone and stuff like that as well though, they are very versatile tools that go beyond the marketing (speed paints) even the best painters have started to work these paints into their schemes more and more. You might as well use everything you have access to though. You never know what might be right for project until you try it out.
3D printer is cheaper if you amortize the cost of the printer and resin over plenty of prints. That's objectively proofable. Sadly with GW's prices, the number of prints you need to amortize over isn't absurdly high...
This vid inspired me to grab the AP speedpaints to recreate that faint blue-in-the-black effect you have there. Mine ended up quite cloudy but a layer of Nuln oil made it look like full-on Darth Vader armour. Thank you!
I have to agree sadly. Citadel contrast just owns the market at being the best in my opinion. its smoother, more vibrant and readily available. i wish the army painter could fix their issues with reactivation and drying time, then they would take over the market. however until then, contrast definitely owns the day. which sucks for me as an army painter fanboy (at least with the new fanatics paint line and air paints)
For silver, what about Nuln Oil over the gray base, then the speed paint silver? Seems like that could solve the depth problem so that it doesn't look flat when applied.
I like how smooth Army Painter seems to come out over less detailed surfaces. But like you say that shorter drying time with the Citadel really wins out if you're "properly speeding" getting through a project
in all fairness to the speed paint set, i do respect you have valid criticisms about its drying time for the purpose of painting ONE mini. But i mean, the brand IS literally named ARMY PAINTER speed paint. The idea is that you're going to use speed paint to SPEED PAINT and army after all, so if it takes you 10 minutes to apply it to one mini, then you have 10 minis in that squad alone, you paint 100 minutes, wait 20, and go back to the first model and do the next layer
Ah! I have not no there’s a few more out there but I ain’t made of money! I’ll be saving up my pennies for these ones the Warcolours ones and the Scale 75 ones as well. Everything gets a test eventually!
Only think I don't like about Xpress is that I haven't found it anywhere locally in Vegas. Most carry Army Painter and GW's paint and that's it. If by any chance they have Vallejo, they only have the standard model line.
Something I'd really like to see is if the Speedpaint 2.0 look as good over metallics as the 1.0 rendition did, because I feel that was surprisingly 1.0's best feature in my opinion. I almost committed to doing an army with Dark Wood(speedpaint) over a silver paint, but the old paint's reactivation killed my motivation.
Agreed. I would base my necrons gunmetal and put grim black over the carapace. It looked great. The reactivation did frustrate me until I leaned to work around it.
I found the reactivation to be more of a feature when utilized right, especially when painting over metallics! You can do kind of a "reverse drybrush" with a lightly damp brush, taking away the tint on the very edges and bringing back the metallic more after the tint. A bit like you would take away oil paint washes with white spirit. Really like that finish.
Hello. I really enjoyed this real world look at contrasts. Question about the Speedpaints...Is there a reason the bottles you showed in the video didn't have the "2.0" on the label? This may sound like a ridiculous follow up question, but are you sure you actually got the 2.0 paints?
Nice vid! Wasn’t surprised by the speedpaint metallics but I was a little disappointed by the Vallejo paints. I have speedpaint 1 and some contrast 1 paint and will probably get some of the 2 in both as I like having the options but probably will skip the Vallejo express.
Tho not a speed paint, the vallejo airbrust metal paints work almost the same way as a speed paint and are very good tho it took me a little bit of practice to learn how to apply them.
I’m torn. I am starting to get fed up with citadel range(not tried contrast yet) and don’t really like vajeao. Was thinking of army painter speed, but didn’t know that they took so longer to dry, and worried about reactivation as I didn’t know that was a thing.
Your comments about moving the goal posts are spot on, and it's too rare that channels focus on transparency in this way. Buuuut... I'm going to say that you can get the elegoo mars 2 resin printer for $100 with free shipping. You have to add Resin and some tools and basic PPE, but you can still be looking at less than $200 to be able to spit out minis at cents per piece. The caveat isn't the price of the printer any more, but you DO have to be willing and able to put in the work associated with Resin printing. And it's totally fair to not want that.
when you factor in labor hours and potentially serious and poorly understood health risks associated with resin printing, the money you're saving int he short term is a lot less than it would seem, especially compared with the secondary market.
Good vid, thanks! The metallic speed paint looked like my lead belcher when i put too much water in it =/ but that purple was great... still, i'll stick to contrast!
Love seeing these side by side comparisons and you gave a really fair appraisal of each make. I basically use citadel paints as (like you find) they are easiest for me to get hold of. I can’t spend loads of money on paints all at once in a mega bundle type deal (I’d love to but just can’t) so I’ve bought most of my paints 1,2,3 at a time. If Vallejo become available where I’d live, I’d give them a go for the price but I’m not waiting around for two hours for speedpaint a to dry. I only paint small warbands and like to focus on one or two figures at a time. They colours do look great though.
I reckon I could paint an entire mini start to finish to a decent standard in 2 hours. Speed Paints are not speeding that process up in that case. I agree about contrast though. It is too quick on drying and the only way to slow it down is medium which then changes the way the paint works. Not exactly great.
This comparison is too cool 🔥. Vallejo is by far the weakest. I really want Vallejo to dominate because I’m Catalan, like the brand… But Citadel outshines Vallejo every time with its superior saturation and contrast. I hope Vallejo continues to improve, but at the moment, Citadel is unbeatable (and I know, economic extorsion) 😂😂
I prefer speed paints. I've rarely ever gotten activation that wasn't intentional Secondly I like contrast, mostly a few of the old and most of the new. Mostly for vibrant colors rather than .. Ironically... Contrast I'm on the fence with xpres. I really don't like the colors.
Totally agree with this. I just need to Slay the gray.
I've found SpeedPaints great for fast painting (especially my Warmaster and Epic armies) but they work surprisingly well for blending and other advanced techniques on heroes and monsters.
@The Army Painter I just bought a beginner speed paint set for my friend who is interested in miniature painting. ❤️ you guys!
I'm in the same boat as you, mate, I'm seriously considering getting the new 2.0 Mega Set for the exact same reason. I love to paint, but my time to do so is limited.
I like how the blue and black merged, gives it a nice cool tone.

Keep in mind that there have been reports of Speedpaint 2.0 cracking, and there seem to be a few reasons for this - heat and humidity, how you prime your models, how much paint you apply, and even the paints not being thin enough have been cited as causes.
i have 21 speedpaint 2.0 colours and I love them. I want to sell my citadel colours now.
@@michaelbrand1173 I thought about selling my citadel, but decided against it because I have a lot of unopened pots and I'd never get a decent price for them.
you always get low balled with 2nd hand paint collections, as people will always say "well what you're lying about the pots being full"
easier to do in person, but I wouldn't sell them online.
also most citadel paint is good, it's only really their colours with a lot of white in them ,that suck. so their bone colours, their whites etc, get vallejo or something or AK interactive who honestly make the best paint IMO.
Im pretty satisfied with the speed paints, they are a joy to work with compared to citadel for me (longer drying time is super nice)
I can get some pretty nice results with the speed paints, and they’ve built up my confidence to start trying out some new things
speed paints the best. drying time isn't an issue for most casual hobbyists as we dont have that much time to paint anyway.
I haven't tried Vallejo, but between Speedpaints 1.0 have completely replaced almost my entire Contrast set. Just noticeably better results with them. Longer drying time isn't an ussue
drying time isnt an issue because you dont have that much time. hmm ok..
@@RumpIeforeskin if you need me to spell out for you. if your speed painting your batch painting. if your batch painting its unlikely you will even be going over the same area on the same day if you only have an hour or two to paint.
I have 20ish contrast paints, and the complete sets of speedpaint 1.0 and xpress colour (though i haven't really used the xpress colour much yet)
I'll say this.
GREAT comparison video.
I will say I love the tone of black speed paint caused. The blue undertone comes through and to me makes a more interesting black.
I don't have any of the metal speed paints, but I find that all the regular ones works wonderfully over some shining silver, including the grey one.
Just get a bottle of "Fairy dust". Now ALL your speedpaints are metallics!
I think this may be the most unbiased review of anything I have seen on youtube, hobby related. Props to you bro for refusing to be owned.
Great video! One point worth mentioning is that due to the matt nature of the XPress colours they don’t really work over metallics as they dull the shine
Too right! I work with data, I can make it read whatever you want it to. It does depend on how many biscuits I can bribed with. Great video 👍🏻🤘🏻
The thing about contrast and speed paints is as you say. People like different brands and stick to them. For me, I like that AP is working with the community and are pretty well priced. Citadel or GW is a company that is really good but really pricy as well. But the thing that they are not working with their community is a bit, that i dont like about them. Still using both
Super interesting, I think the finish of the Vallejo was nice enough that I'll give it a go some time! 👌 Great stuff
You say you test AP speedpaimt 2.0, but your bottles are definitely 1.0 version basing on the layout of the logos... Are you sure you have 2.0?
For me, i am not a great painter but i love the latest contrast the Yellows especially are some of the best yellows i have ever had speed paint or not. i also still paint mostly from the pot so having that option with contrast is a big winner for me.
Great video and good to see time taken to try and run a fair test and comparison between different ranges. 🔥🔥
Good to see your work on Warhammer Community, nice job 👍
This has been awesome. I have struggled with my contrast paint being uneven and although I am not there yet your channel has helped me so much with how to use them and this helps me understand what options I have now
The standout from this video is the Beowulf Blue.
Like the Speed Painter black with the Citadel Contrast Purple
I've found a cheap travel hair dryer works well. I can crack through heroes and monsters fairly quickly.
i really like the matt finish from valejo black lotus and the blue i will definitely be picking them up
I got the speedpaint mega set. I'm looking forward to trying this with a graveyard grey undetcoat
I use GW and AP Speed. I have favorites on both. Havent had a chance to use Vallejos version so we shall see
It cost so much money for the average noob to find and test paints they like.
It may be that you don't thin your paints? Using as little water and medium as possible is suppose to help.
Worth mentioning that Vallejo have their own version of Black Legion now. It's part of their Xpress Intense range.
I really like the speedpaint armour.
Love your videos. Your voice/accent sounds like Jared Harris. The first few videos I watched, I thought that he was you LOL. Keep up the great videos.
I like the reactivation of speed paint. I see it as a feature.
Good video, really like your approach overall :) And comments apparently benefits the channel as well. Thanks!
I'd love to see some green recipes! Difference shades and effects from layering over other colors.
Hey Warhipster, love the vids. Could you do a paint tutorial of the new Commander Farsight model when it's released?
Great video, I found this much more informative than a lot of the other speed paint videos. Im in the process of trying to choose a range to go with and everyone will be different but I really like the look of the vallejo xpress range, the lighter colour seems to me to give the best value range that would work with a nice zenithil airbrush. The others although nice are just too dark for me although I do see a lot of people saying speed paint 2.0 is better so I'm still undecided.
The next wave of Xpress Colors are coming in October. Looking forward to what's coming then, hopefully there's a good black in there
Honestly, just take what you need from various lines.
The gold is actually quite nice***
Really enjoyed this and seeing an overview of the strengths of the three paints together was really helpful.
Great video. I'm looking to start painting and I think this video edged me into team Citadel. Good stuff!
i just find the speed paints more consistent in coverage, and overall easier to control. They arent as good as filtering as contrast, but they come in dropper bottles. At the end of the day whatever the hell gets you painting and playing is the right choice. I know having the speed paints has inspired me to get my army done, and maybe try some more advanced things on my leaders to help them stand out more.
I *highly* recommend deep purple from the xpress range
I wanted to buy the new complete Speed Paint set, but my wife told me not to, as I have a birthday coming up xD
How did I miss the ultimate black Armour vid? I’ve been on the quest for like a year now!!
Thanks for the video.
the first batches of labels for Speedpaint 2.0 were the same as 1.0. After some feedback future labels were changed and color description added
Good review, thank you for putting in the time to make this video.
the conclusion for me was not a surprise but we like what we know.
I'm actually surprised how light the xpress colors come out. In the bottle it looks dark and inky, but on the models it's super bright almost pastel.
Still the undisputed king of metalics is the Vallejo Metal Color line. I have tried just about all the hobby paint lines version of metalics and they all fall short! That being said looks like they are only halfway there with the Express color line.
I wonder if the Hive Dweller Purple would have been a closer match to Leviathan Purple than the Purple Swarm was?
IDK if they ship to the UK but Michigan Toy Soldier has all the new vallejo colors. Including the re-labled regular colors.
Damn, I just ordered The Vallejo XPress colours full set, I regret not going for the Army Painter Speedpaints, the Vallejo range seems to be missing pigments
To me it looks like the Vallejo paints would do much better with a little darker primer, they look pretty transparent.
that was my experience today. used a Templar White (light gray) on a white primed model and everything shows through. going to order some Speedpaint 2.0 and see if that is any better since I usually prime with white.
I had the opposite tried dwarf skin on a "slapchop" model. Thought dwarf skin would look kinda surfer tanned dark not sub Sahara...
Woaaaa! I’m famous. Can’t wait to tell my mum. How do these compare to Dipping Inks and have you tried to make your own Contrast paint with inks?
Ah! I have not no there’s a few more out there but I ain’t made of money! I’ll be saving up my pennies for these ones the Warcolours ones and the Scale 75 ones as well. Everything gets a test eventually!
@@Warhipster thanks for the response! I look forward to more videos like this.
I just hit it with some clear coat if I’m worried about reactivating. Red was the worst for it.
My favorite chapter! I'm taking notes for my army lol
Vallejo for me.
Hello. I really enjoyed this real world look at contrasts. Question about the Speedpaints...Is there a reason the bottles you showed in the video didn't have the "2.0" on the label? This may sound like a ridiculous follow up question, but are you sure you actually got the 2.0 paints?
I’m like 2 minutes in and I’m already a fan of this video
Just like I'm always a fan of you sir!
I do prefer the intensity of the contrast paint, with a yellow or a gold, it could be really fine !
Are you sure this is Army Painter 2.0, the labels look like the 1.0 version? 2.0 labels say 2.0 on them and have a color description at the bottom.
I think the first batches of Speedpaint 2.0 didn't have the color description
I have an orc stompa that has been setting on the shelf for 3 to 4 months. I got it wet and dabbed it with a dry paper towel, and it was bleeding
Painted with which brand of paints?
I prefer Liquitex transparent inks over any of them.

I've rarely ever gotten activation that wasn't intentional
Secondly I like contrast, mostly a few of the old and most of the new. Mostly for vibrant colors rather than .. Ironically... Contrast
I'm on the fence with xpres. I really don't like the colors.
