- This is a complete playthrough of the MS-DOS CD-Version of Alone in the Dark. I have cut away things like saving a game or leaving unimportant stuff behind. It should still work as a walkthrough for anyone who would like to experience the ending himself :)

If you happen to understand German, there are lots of Let's Plays of new and old games on my channel, so maybe take a look! :) Thank you all for being here!
I hope you will gladly play the remake.
@@Angels-zt3np I'm certain, I will. Thank you!
I don't understand german, but i would love to see your videos anyway
@@KwonAssassin Thank you so much! ✨

What a horrible detective. He's paid to find an antique piano, but instead he exorcizes a building.
...and leaves without the piano.
How was he even suppose to bring it back? Don't you need a piano mover for that? Maybe hiring a piano mover would have made more sense? Very mysterious game.
Hahahahahaha
To be fair, he was hired to "find" the piano. He did that. If she wanted it moved, she should have paid extra. Or have not hired a PI for a moving company's job. Lol
She still has to pay him. They had bailiffs back then. If you didn't pay bill for an exorcism, they'd come back and repossess your house.
my computer at the time wasn't good enough to play the music, and the silence made it all even scarier
Me too :)
Mine too but I think it's better (also so much scarier) without background music
I'm 13,but I'm fascinated by 80s to early 2000s technology, I have a windows 200 pc which my uncle gave to me, but Noone knew the password so I formatted it, and put freedos on it, also installed windows 3.1, I got this game on gog and I tried to play it on that pc but it said that the disc needed to be in, and my CD reader is damaged, but it also can't play music
Exactly the same for me. I eventually ended getting a Cd-rom and the Cd version of the game but as much as I love the CD soundtrack for me the true experience was always to play with sounds only, the level of immersion still gets me to play this game the same way from time to time nowadays.
Don’t agree
4:36 I love this shot so much. It so clearly illustrates the difference between the protagonist, the antagonist, and the player. A monster peers out the window, the main character doesn’t realize just how much danger he will be putting himself in by entering the mansion, the one with the clearest idea is you, yet you make him enter the house, and you will both soon find out just what you’re in for.
ngl I've always wanted to see a fan art restylized from this specific shot
Comparing the hands to those at 49:14, I've always wondered if it's supposed to be Pregzt looking out of the window.
@@Varrik159 mhmm, it seems to be
that game needs a proprer remake, was so creepy.
@@Thesavagesoulsit has one happening right now.
The father of all survival horror games
Actually, Sweet Home on the NES has many survival horror elements.
Incorrect. Many critics considered Haunted House on Atari 2600 to be the first of the genre.
@@LITTLE1994 still this game is the first 3D that alone is a statemen. for early 90s this graphics are sureal. u cant get much scared in 2d style
No
...and still the best one :)
This takes me back. I remember this was super high tech when it came out. What a time to be alive.
I remember being a youngling scared to death by that music when the monsters broke through the window.
And now I'm a father fighting the monsters hiding in the dark when it's time for my daughter to go to bed :D
Remeber the little instruction manual?
At 8:00 it’s James the Gentleman Masher Corcoran
I love you
isn't it cool living on the cusp of the most major technological advances in the average lifespan?
I used to watch my mom play this game when i was like 6 and i would hide under the desk when i got scared. Thanks so much for this!
you're very welcome! :)
@@Neo2266.wtf man the dude was 6
That's so fucking cute LoL
U have a cool mom. My mom plays mario
My dad would play it and my sister and I would run and hide behind the door. This game has always stuck with me.
The way he slaps the zombies is hilarious
Cannot believe this is already 30 years....Time flies.

Lets to the Time Warp again
Let's just...not...think about that. 😂
Remake is coming.
@@CommanderGrog 31 now :)
Wow this is actually super impressive for 1992!!
It really was. i remember being especially impressed by the sound.
Good Time
@@CommanderGrog Yeah, sound was paramount to this game! I remember I know Chopin´s farewell waltz thanks to it and I loved it
It's seriously impressive how detailed this game was for its time!
this and MYST are stuck in my mind
I wonder if the THQNordic reboot of Alone in the Dark will bring back the iconic Edward Carnby?
@@Swordslinger-hb1ns these are the times ahaha
For a game called "Alone in the Dark" it sure is brightly lit...
Haha, true! The sound design and the graphics were very atmospheric back then, though :). I
still recommend it, if you can look past the obviously dated controls and graphics.
TheIrland09 You know, I kinda miss horror games where the atmosphere is bright yet deceptive...
I think the name came from those certain rooms throughout the game that were pitch black and where you had to light-up the lantern to go any further.
@Lauren Victoria I expect you not to be a snarky little prick.
@@TheIrland09 stfu
I remember playing this as a teenager. How hyped the low polygon graphics were back then.
This game is notoriously hard. Not only it's got apocryphic puzzles, but the user interface was kinda the hardest fight in the game. The cool cinematic camera angles had the drawback of not knowing where the character is actually facing which made hitting monsters quite difficult at times and the movement reminds me of a flea stuck in a puddle of tar carrying the piano from the loft.
And about the game's plot and puzzles. You actually had to read into the books, notes, letters, parchements and stuff and think. The solutions to the puzzles were not offered on a silver platter, you had to work for them.
It's a very cool game and it's got a tingling atmosphere. Scary, too. The story is very good.
I didn't recognize this game until I heard the sound effects. I totally remember the sound effects! Then it all came back. Yes the constantly changing camera angles were a big challenge
the character is facing the way the front of his body is pointing
For 1992 the graphics were quite good compared to other games.
Something about 90s games that went beyond the simple shoot-em-up style being extremely difficult; if you have played Daggerfall, you'd know what I mean.
I can't imagine how they could pull out this level of graphics for 1992 but make such a bad UI. Like, just make some hotkeys for that "Fight", "Push" etc actions, wtf.
I remember playing this on a cold winter's night for the first time in 1993. I must have been about 11 at the time. I still remember being absolutely terrified. Was hooked on Survival Horror games ever since. This wasn't just a game for me, it was a lived experience. I even often dreamed about it.
i got nightmares man. those sound effects were amazing..
Love how Carnaby runs like he crapped his pants
😂
Can remember when I first played this and told my brother "it almost looks like a movie!". Wonderful Memories!
Now it does. The Remake is out and on Steam
Aww heck naw he said “it looks like a movie” and it looks like old school RuneScape 😂💀
@@ginosko_ yes 😂
I’m pretty sure this game helped pave the way for Resident Evil
100% AITD is the grandfather of survival horror.
That and Capcom’s survival horror RPG based on the movie “Sweet Home.”
Pretty sure? Lol
That, and Silent hill.
Alone In the Dark was the reason why I purchased a PlayStation to play Resident Evil.
For ultimate experience put the quality on 240p
tomyhas boi
144p: "Am I joke to you?" :D
Not that much of a difference tho
My friend, you're brilliant!!
Maybe you never had a tube TV.
The camera angles definitely inspired resident evil. I had only seen screen shots , so i didn't know, how many things were taken to make re. The loud footsteps , zombies, tank controls , inventory screen, camera angles, creepy music , female/male character choice, huge mansion with creepy puzzles and traps, and notes everywhere explaining the story. Surprised for 92 the polygons are really good. It seems they used a limited color pallet. Due to restrictions alot of dark green and pink but i think it helps hide the faults , by making have a certain artistic style with the colors. It's very cool seeing the building blocks that made the survival horror genre. I've heard sweet home also inspired re, but haven't ever seen actual gameplay of it either. I might have to watch a play through of that and see what was taken from it as well.
The mighty slap of death

Reminds me of the slap sound they used on the Three Stooges, lol. *SLAP* *SLAP*

Here because I heard THQ say their version is a "reimagination", so I'm here to learn what the original was like, thanks for posting this man! Really appreciate the knowledge!
this was basically the first Resident Evil... you're methodically exploring an old mansion full of "zombies" while working your way through puzzles and traps... even the "dog" jumping through the window in front of the player camera @ 13:26 is an exact copy of the gameplay that Resident Evil 1 would lift from Alone in the Dark
it is hard to explain to the younglings how this game was scary as hell at the time and very different from things that came before it
It scared the living daylights out of me back then. The change of walking sound when you went from carpet to wooden planks just made everything feel so real. 😅
This game put the absolute fear into me as a child. Even hearing the music now 30 odd years gives me chills. Lol
I tried to play this when I was a kid, couldn't work the controls, got fed up and quit. Great to see it actually being played!
You're awesome for taking the time to do this. I have one fond memory of this game when I was a kid. I'm at some doctor appointment and all I can think about is wanting to get home to play this for the first time. That day was perfect, I got home at night, it was a weekend, and there was a decent thunderstorm which accompanied the gameplay perfectly. I literally sat alone in the dark, thunder rumbling, rain coming down, in my basement, and even though the graphics suck now, they were awesome back then. I was totally immersed and watching you play brings it all back. Thank you for sharing!
In 1992 I was 12 and I still remember this game as one of the best games of those times. One of the first 3d, investigative and horror games. The whole game seems to me to have occupied 4 floppy discs and 9 the second title.
Alone in the Dark, Monkey Island and Syndicate are in my opinion among the best games of the early 90s
P.S. Of course I played and finished all three games
I was 10 in 1992. We didn’t get our first computer till I think ‘93; some Gateway 2000 that was supposedly super badass for the time. This game really stood out to me. Though as others said; I can’t recall the music playing for me. Maybe it did and I just don’t remember. I swear it was eerily silent though. I don’t think I ever made it very far in this. I remember also having AITD 3; a western vibe. What a great time.
7:55 top 10 fight animes
Lol
37 seconds
Game started at : 6:08, thank you very much for sharing, one if not the scariest game ever
Thanks so much for this!! I was obsessed with this game when I was about 14 years old. I’m 37 now. Stayed up for days playing it and calling the 1-900 number for game hints and tips. 😂😂
This was the first horror game i ever saw when i was a kid. Was fucking scary. I never was able to exit the first room and the monster jumping in from outside always kill me :(
Ahaha, yes. I was scared by this as a kid myself.
I used to watch my grandma play this probably in 92 or 93. Very scary stuff when you're 7 years old! This game was super formative for me and a big reason why I still think indie pixel horror games are the pinnacle of horror.
Your grandma is/was a badass 😊
I remember when I first played this game as a kid, I had literally never heard music of such quality in a video game before. I was so drawn in to the experience. Awesome times :D
And now, this game is having a remake!
Hopfefully it will be good! 🙏 But I'll most certainly play it.
A remake?Ugghh SUCHHH a rip off of resident evil 🙄😵
Jk before anyone gives me a history lesson
Who remembers the shivers that went down the spine when you heard the demonic laughter as you walked down the stairs having just defeated the gargoyles with the mirrors? What an epic game!
The inventory is the real antagonist in this game
you are VERY right!
CONGRATULATIONS!!! you have unlocked a childhood's memory
I miss the old game stores with the big box pc games. I would spend hours in them. The 80s / 90s were a great era for gamers.
Back when saying " Super VGA, Sound Blaster 2, editing Autoexec.bat and Config.sys and tweaking your Highmem" would get you a date with the hottest lady in the club (not really).
steven wallace ...I had a genuine laugh reading this comment. I remember the days of dealing with the config.sys and autoexec.bat tweaks. And I had a SoundBlaster as well!
Yes every game must run within the 640KB boundary back then so we often must edit those 2 files to free up some memory.
I thought I was pretty cool with my 486 DX 40 pc. Was gaming elite back then. :D
@@hotmanpasaribu665 I think that stopped being a problem with the DOS4GW protected mode.
The times when you were popular on your neighborhood because you had discovered Quarterdeck's QEMM and it worked better than DOS' memmaker...
Just to play this game when i was a kid, this game gave me nightmares i think the sounds was the thing that got me everytime
This game had a lot of influence on survival horror going forward but I'm thankful for this playthrough because it's aged too much for me to enjoy playing myself.
Did you know you can block the trapdoor at the start by pushing the chest over it before the zombie rises out? :D
yes, but I didn't want to spoil the zombie reveal. But thank you for mentioning!
I could listen to that page turn sound effect all afternoon... and every time I read a hard copy book IRL.
You know the game is really old when it says "Return to DOS".
Something I really like here is how so much - from Carnby, to the house itself, even to the character select screen - has this eerie green tint, like something that's rotting. It's such a subtle detail, but right away it hints that things are...off a little bit.
Who else is here after the new game has been announced?
wow this is the clearest footage I have seen of this on youtube, great upload thanks!
DAMN !!! Even i've completed this game as a kid and now after re-watching it i'm puzzled as of how i managed to complete it back then. It took me weeks or months to do it without any tutorial back in the days. This game deserves a remake but not like the other ones in the series but a completely new remake that has this particular feel to it.
We did it by dying and repeating :)
3 yrs later it is getting a remake! Can't wait!
It’s happening!!!
I get VERY strong Luigi's Mansion vibes from this.
A friend working at Infogrames showed me a beta (or may be alpha) version of this game many months before it was released. The sounds, the graphic, the 3D, the whole atmosphere of this game looked way better than all other games I've seen at that time.
Which system?
You're a legend
Thank you for this! It got my heart racing at the end just like 25+ years ago!!!
Carnby voice actor sounds terribly drunk... lol
+Herman Toothrot well, he is sipping on the large decanter of scotch lol.
+Herman Toothrot Play it with 0.5× speed for enhanced effect.
Потому что озвучивал Сергеборисыч.
Its a different voice than the one I remember.
Kinda fitting for a PI behind on his rent though.
When this game came out, 3D gaming was just getting started. It was state of the art at the time and scary as fuck. Lol
Haha, true! It was so scary back then. I distinctly remember how the realstic walking on wood sound in the first room managed to scare me. 😅
Yup, and than 4 years later Resident Evil perfected it
Needed the VesaLocalBus Tseng Labs ET-4000W/32p graphics to handle it. Felt like I needed to upgrade my system twice a year in those days.
Thanks man, for upload this video. It's remember me my junior high school memories with my friend play this game together. And now i'm 32 years old 🤣
I'm glad you liked it. Nostalgia is a powerfull feeling, isn't it? :)
@@CommanderGrog i agree with you :)
The true grand daddy of survival horror games. Resident evil, eat your heart out.
The father of Resident Evil
Haunted House in Atari 2600 may have started the genre, but this game is what set the template for survival horror games to come since.
Many fond memories of playing this game for hours at a stretch when it first came out. Awesome playthrough. :-)
One of the scariest games I’ve played in my young days… great game!!
Brings back memories, thx man
Next gen graphics.
Now imagine if Capcom bought this IP then rebooted the original trilogy with RE8’s visuals. That would be a sight to behold…
I remember playing this as a 5 year old. It was very haunting to say the least. The ''monster'', as I would call it, would always scare me. I was pretty bad at the game, didn't really know what to do. But hearing the ''monster'' walk almost into the room I was in, made my buttcheeks clench and had me sitting at the edge of my seat. Good times.
The sound was so important in creating the atmosphere in these older games. I think the sound (minus the voice-"acting") still works very well to this day. 😊
Be sure to play this video at 1080p for the best visual quality 🙂
I finally remembered , i played the demo of this game when i was a kid, the scene in the attic...it gave me nightmares back then... :D
What demo was this on? I remember it had other games too, was it on out of this world cd?
@@Dakobah20 idk it was some kind of "50(or100 idk anymore) demo's games CD" thing, a lot of games were on it and a lot didnt really work but it was some kind of an official CD ,i mean was this even a thing back then?
I remember playing this game when it came out and I dared not play it at night because I was too scared! BTW we considered these graphics as something top notch at the time! we loaded the game from DOS! I think I played it on a 486 DX2.
They call it "drunk fight", but actually fighting in this game was the most real-life like i've seen in a game, nothing spectacular.
Also, it was interesting that the two characters you could play looked like the staff from a library, not like superheroes, which made the player feel more vulnerable
7:50 the tense music, the zombie rising from the ground, danger is imminent.
Everything going silent the second Carnby starts slapboxing them is hilarious.
What a beautifully rendered game - beautiful graphics, and amazing for its time.
Here after the original was released as a remake
This is such a great game. It was my first experience with "Survival Horror", my older neighbor showed it to me. Too bad the series got ran into the ground. Here's to hoping it gets a proper new edition or reboot!
Hear, hear! It has so much potential, but they keep trying to make it something it's not. It's like they say, "Let's make Alone in the Dark, but THIS time---", and at that point they need a Carnby-esque slap.
Peeps seeing the graphic-quality now falls to the floor laughing, but this game was _highest_ possible game-tech, and so much that the game was featured in non-gaming media, as an example of what could be done with sc. _Home-computers_ !
There was of cause also the usual outcry from the Karens og that time, warning for the horrific content, that without doubt would destroy a whole generation of youth!
The game was also Marked with " _For adults only_ " 21 years was afair the advised age-limitation!
The game also spearheaded every survival-horror game that would follow.
This game was indeed a game-changer.
The play-through in this video is avoiding all the traps, and also leaves out all the strange and gruesome books, that actually was an important part of the atmosphere in the game. That is making the gameplay look simpler than it actually was.
AITD was _not_ an easy game. But imho still with _gameplay_ that place it as one of the best in the genre!
For the science I finally played this through using your video as walkthrough. When I was young I felt uneasy to play this as it was too scary, also I had no idea what to do. The sound, the music were terrifying. Usually used the shotgun until I had no ammo. The opening scene was great. Now playing this like 30 years later it has some very clever puzzles and ideas but at the same time the inventory struggle is real and it would have been quite a frustration probably going too far and missing some essential items and getting stuck there forever. But that was quite usual at the time. Still, a great game. I remember my friend having the sequel but it felt like it was nothing but constant combat and missing all of the intensity of the first one.
This is a masterpiece.
I remember wanting this game so bad when I was a kid!
7:56 Only a real gentleman can defeat a Zombie by slapping them in the arms until it dies
I remember playing this as a kid. I still very clearly remember that window at the very start of the game, and that I had no idea what I was doing, so every time I walked up to the window, a dog would jump through and kill me.
I never ended up getting further than that because I was too young to know I could have pushed the cupboard, but I distinctly remember having nightmares about it. I would dream that the character would run around and jump through the window to escape it, but I never ended up being able to do it when I played the game IRL.
Anyone here after watching the AITD remake trailer ??
Oh my god, i was sooo scared as a child from this game!! Thx for the great LP!
Oh! I remember it. I played this game when i was a teen
Oh what gret memories i had playing this game, took me forever to figure out the puzzels, no youtube walkthroughs then had to figure out all by myself...great to see this again
those were damn good graphics and sound effects in 92
It sure was impressive! I mean: there were textures!!! 😁
I remember my dad playing this game and I wasn't all that scared but when he played Silent Hill I was terrified. It didn't help that he had surround sound either. Great memories
My dad and older brother used to play this when I was little I loved watching
Man, what memories viewing this game brings back. I played it 30 years ago! I think it was the first game with 3D graphics I played. My computer was all over the place! The FPS, in the heaviest parts, should be half a dozen, if that. And yet, playing this game was a dream come true. Nowadays, if a game doesn't show 144FPS in the upper left corner of the computer screen, a bunch of kids come to RUclips screaming that the game is poorly optimized, kids who don't even know what a meshe is, a script or what it is a draw call, kids who haven't seen the fantastic evolution that computer games have had in 30 years. Sadness!
Ah a trip down memory lane. Loved this game!
I'm more scared of the detective's face than anything else
Paved the way for so many games - what a classic...
Wow this takes me back, thank you! I couldn't finish this when I was a kid, too scary. Man games have come a long way
They should re-release this with more polished controls. Such an hidden gem and quite ahead of its time.
Yeah, better controls higher-res backgrounds and a few polygons more (not too much, to not loose the style) and it would be gold. Though I could see it go the Resident Evil Remake (the first one) route, too (regarding the graphics). 🤔
Hello! They are remaking this game. Coming out October 2023!
Such a game. It's ridiculously hard but it's insane to think the atmosphere they managed to create in those early years. I love the shameless mega backtracking at the latest part of the game. Those were the wild days :) Thanks for the walkthrough!
30 years ago, I watched my father playing this game, which i still have.
My turn now.
That's great. He passed you the baton. 😊
I loved this game, those zombies would always make me jump just when I was chilled out trying to figure the puzzles out 😱
I remembered so many different and gruesome ways of dying. This was s as fantastic game.
The Inspiration of Survival Horror.
Sort of. Definitely the modern wave of it. Some Japanese games done years before
Definitley, paved the way for games like resident evil, or silent hill, now I think about the mechanics and the whole layout of this game is very similar to re1, old house, clues, objects, hidden doors, scary enemies. It’s all there. This was obviously the foundations of the future games.
Loved playing this as a young teenager on a 386 but quickly got frustrated when couldn't get out of the room with the piano, then I realized tight arse mum and dad only got the shareware version.
The noise the man makes when he gets hurt is extremely similar to the noise the zombies make in the original Resident Evil.
I hope the new game does the classic trilogy justice....I still play the originals once I year, I've such nostalgia for them.
I definitely hope so, too.
I went down to the secret tunnel and came out in the cellar. The bridge is gone now so I can't go back the old way, and when I enter from the celler, the worm comes.
Any idea? I can't get back in.
Its a wonder that this didn't give me nightmares as a kid, but I always loved watching my dad play it and a few other games similar to it as well
Played this when it just came out on Dos, i was 8 or 9, i remember it was scary as hell and the controls were atrocious! This video brought up great memories!
