The song about a funeral. About turning his head when he sees girls in summer clothes, he's depressed he's mourning the death of a loved one. He doesn't want to see anybody having fun or Joy while he's mourning the death of someone he loves.
I always thought he meant he had to turn his head, because he didn't want to be tempted into falling in love, until his grief has passed.
When I first heard this song years ago, I totally got that right off the bat, it's that same feeling of when you're alone and you just can't look at a happy couple in love it makes you sick feeling. Seeing the girls dressed all pretty having fun, when you're depressed and lonely lamenting someone, you'd just get sick to your stomach.
I always interpreted that line as that he's so depressed that he doesn't even care about pretty girls, so he turné His head or maybe he just can't anyone pretty and happy deep in his darkness.
I look at it as, his hart is black because he is a sick in the head man. Wants to paint the red door black because red door could be the sign of a prostitute house and wants to project his disdain on it, and turn his head from the girls because it just fuels the fire in side.
“If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes.” He’s saying if he thinks about it too deeply at sunset, he will kill himself and laugh with his dead loved one by morning. Really the darkest and deepest line in the song and no one ever gets it.
The song is about grief and him losing a loved one to death " I see a line of cars and there all painted black" (a funeral procession) "both flowers and my love never to come back" and the girls in summer clothes turning his head till darkness goes, the darkness is grief and the girls remind him of his love he lost having to turn his head because the memory/grief is to painful

Exactly what I got from this song, the guy lossed his loved one, he's in no mood for anything happy hence: "I see girls dress in their summer cloths and I have to turn my head", he's grieving, he is in no mood to see happy or joy right now, his world is black. This song seems so easy to understand, but then, I've heard it many many times.
@@Moonshinedave1 I think you got it right. The dead girlfriend is just the catalyst for the depression. He's seeing happy shiny colors and he is far away from the feeling that it actually intensifies his depression.

Got to wonder what very narrow view of 'rock' set boundaries so tiny? Good grief... if there's reading that the Stones are the #1 Rock Band, why not read about this song? Saying so many wrong things hurts my willingness to continue.
A lot of bands were in the early days of this. The Kinks - You Really Got Me was the first in my opinion.
@@voltakackackack4303 not to take anything away from the Stones or some of the earlier bands from the 60’s but Black Sabbath took that 60’s sound to a completely different level and that’s why they’re considered to be the “true” birth of rock music. Kinda the same way that Metallica is considered the “true” birth of thrash metal. In the end, none of that really matters because all of that music was and still is, great.
After my father died is when I truly understood this song. It perfectly relayed how you feel watching the world continue when nothing will ever be the same again. You don't think there should be color, or laughter.
My mom died in '17 and I'm still not over it...
you guys have to understand that the sound of Rock isn't just what you decided to listen to when first embarking on this journey. To you guys everything is just the past but your spanning decades of evolving music. When you ask questions like "is this rock" it means you've already decided on what rock should sound like.......and you've only gotten started.
Basically what they have to understand is The Rolling Stones spans that entire evolution till today. They basically were at day one with modern rock and were instrumental in shaping the foundations of what rock became over the decades.
Just as their "rock" music evolved, so did the rest of the industry.
"Rock" is just a word, the music that has been put in that category covers a wider range than any other genre by far. Blues rock, country rock, progressive rock, art rock, alternative rock... the lines are pretty blurry when you try to pigeonhole music, as if it matters if this is rock or not. It's a song, and people call it rock. It would be the same song if they called it opera.

yeah, there was rock-and-roll, rock, soft rock, hard rock, then psychedelic rock, then metal ( being harder than a rock), and heavy metal. Rock now emcompasses 70 years of changing. The early Beatles were the "good boys" to the Rolling Stones being the "bad boys" of rock. unfortunately, at least where I live, "Classic Rock" radio stations are really classic metal , you don't get to hear much rock that was more mainstream anymore.
The Rolling Stones are one badass rock-n-roll band. Check out "Gimme Shelter", "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses", "Angie", "Tumbling Dice", "Honky Tonk Women", "Monkey Man", "B*tch", "Let It Bleed", "Dead Flowers", "2000 Light Years From Home", "Beast of Burden", "Shattered" and so many others.
you can go on and on with the stones. you still only named a fraction of their best songs.

I've always considered the Stones, up until Goat's Head Soup, to be amazing and Gimme Shelter (and Fool's Gold - The Stone Roes) to be the best songs ever and 100 Years Ago, Angie, Wild Horses, Sympathy For The Devil, Under My Thumb etc. amazing too, but I haven't heard Shattered or Can't Hear Me Knocking but definitely will do.

This song was teleased in 1966. I was 16. Glad somebody explained the meaning to you. I'm in the enviable position, if being 71 can be called enviable, of having grown up all the way to the present being able to listen to and appreciate so much fantastic music. When you listen try to understand it in the context of when it was produced and how it evolved. Love your reactions.

It’s very rock. Part of what makes “rock” a genre for anyone and everyone is the fact that there are a million different variations, a million different sounds and vibes.
The Stones were making rock for decades and just them by themselves have a ton of different sounds.
You’ll never even come close to hearing everything and there is always the possibility of hearing something new and different.
And Lex, you had it right. Most artists, including musicians, tend to be hesitant about divulging what the meaning behind their art is. They want people to experience it and come away with their own interpretation of what it means to them. Sometimes, we have no clue what it means other than we like how it sounds and it makes us feel a certain way.
GIMMIE SHELTER - Merry Clayton did an amazing job on this song. She goes to the studio in the wee hours of the morning whilst having difficulties with a pregnancy. The woman is simply magnificent. Thank u Merry.

This is pure rock. The darkness he has to turn his head from is the darkness that follows the death of a loved one. The row of black cars is a reference to the funeral.
The Stones were rockers in the early 60's and this tune is late 60s, when U.S. rock was really changing. Hippies were everywhere! The Stones were very bluesy and even put out country music. They wrote almost all of their own material. Their sound changed constantly, but never got old.
To me, The Rolling Stones are the epitome of rock. Like rock music in its purest, most distilled form. Straight up rock n roll.
This song and the Animals "I Got To Get Out Of This Place" were the the 2 songs adopted by the troop deployed to Vietnam during the war. They tended to exemplify the emotional mindset of those of us fighting in that conflict.

If you have watched Full Metal Jacket, this song is played during the ending credits. It definitely is about grief and mourning. It definitely got played heavily during the Vietnam War era.

Imagine listening to the Stones for the first time and it's this track. Has been and always will be on my top ten of all time.
He sees the girls "in their summer clothes" an he "has to look away" because he's not ready to look at happiness again (especially the context of pretty women).
He is also describing the obvious discomfort of other people when they see a person who is grieving . Most people are uncomfortable seeing a window. CS lewis wrote about this very thing after he lost his wife.
The guy doesn't want to see happiness and other people don't want to be reminded about death.
The rolling stones have a massive pallet of styles, something for everyone!

The Rolling Stones - like the Beatles - recorded literally hundreds of songs in many different styles and genres . They have been performing since 1962 which is a remarkable 59 year career .

Great way to honour him by checking out this great song! The song sounds like it's about a lover who's died but I think in interviews the band said it was more about depression in general and how it removes all the colour from the world. Hope you check out some more music by twenty one pilots
The "belly dancing" sound is likely due to the use of the sitar, a south Asian instrument introed to the Stones by the Beatles' George.
I agree with a few commenters that reactors would be best off listening to a song for (at least!) more than one minute before interrupting the tune to speculate on the song's meaning(s)...
That said, I enjoy the couple dynamic, and especially Lex's ability to get into the vibe of most songs, almost from the get-go!

Rock is so vast and diverse but this definitely is rock, specifically from the 60's era.
Rock musicians get their inspiration from all types of music , mostly blues and jazz .They also in past were not limited to these influences classical , folk and world music. This song is heavily influenced by the sitar , The musicians seemed to have become aware of it and world music and experimented with it at the time when they were more free to create . Lex I heard you mention classical music in other videos, you should check out YES ( Roundabout ) or Genesis . Progressive rock where Rock is heavily influence by classical music .

The "belly dancer" sound you hear is a sitar, a guitar like instrument from India. A lot of bands during the 60s experimented with it in their music. Primarily because many of the "hippie" types of the time were dabbling in Eastern (Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern) self-enlightenment philosophies and religions and were thus exposed to the music of the region as well, which lead to some bands incorporating new (to the West) instruments and rhythms into their music. This song is probably one of the best examples of where it worked really well.

Just a suggestion: Enjoy the music and don't try to figure out the meaning of the lyrics. It's usually about something super specific and you'll never figure them out. Look up the meaning before or after listening to the song. I've been listening to these songs regularly for 30 years. I still have no clue what half these songs mean.

Agreed! If I was moved by a song and enjoyed it I never worried about what it was about. Some I knew, others I didn't. Same with song names. I'm a huge Zeppelin fan and I never knew the names of most of their songs, until RUclips and streaming came along. I used to play side A, then turn it over and play side B. Quality bands put out quality albums, not a hit song or two per album.

Two real ‘moments’ lyrically in this song, the first, as so many have mentioned is his woman’s funeral. The second is him contemplating suicide to be with her ‘If I look hard enough into the setting’ sun, My love will laugh with me before the morning comes.’ Most people miss that part - it’s deep grief. One of your commenters thought it was about being dumped - so even at first listen you are way ahead of that guy! Some songs have specific meanings, some don’t, some artists share the meanings some prefer not to.
I was 6 when this was my first single that was given to me in 1971 (originally from 1966). It locked me into listening to the full force of music. Although, I got sent home from kindergarten for singing this song. Never stopped me from searching for great music. Enjoy!

The black cars are during funerals for all the soldiers dying in the Vietnam War. It's a song about grief and loss.
It's not about the vietnam war, even though just about every war movie uses it in their soundtrack. A loved one of his has died and he is depressed.

I just feel this song's about me. Like I have a childhood trauma and depression which doesn't let me enjoy my life just like the song says

I always played this on repeat back in the day
To me I always imagined this song was about a solider coming back from war (like Vietnam or Korea) and being haunted by what he had seen and perhaps done. Red reminded him of the blood and fire, seeing the girls in summer clothes, the things some people did they weren't proud of and how the memory of this and all the friends lost (funeral procession of black cars) had ruined his ability to enjoy life. The drug addiction and PTSD making it impossible to fit back into society and people turning their heads when they see him and quickly looking away?? Just my read on it anyways.

Many decades after this song was released, it became the theme song for the tv show "Tour of Duty" which was about the Vietnam War. Commenters below have made a good case that this song was about a funeral, but I had always considered it to relate to depression or, as Brad said, mental health. Fits pretty well there.
It's about grief and how it hurts to see the world so happy and colorful when everything has gone black for you- you want everyone to feel it and to stop being so cherry and bright.
THANK you Brad for making the "belly dancer" connection with the sound of this song. I have thought the same thing from the first time I heard it 50-some odd years ago, I don't know if it's a Moroccan, Middle Eastern or Indian thing. Anyway, it's a special song, one of the 1960's best.
