  • Today I'm back behind the wheel of a 2014 Lotus Evora S. A wonderful car, but almost completely unloved except by those who were brave enough to buy them. With the Evora finally being discontinued this year, I take a look back at the car and see if I can figure out why.

This channel lacks even the slightest hint of snobbery, and I just watched 20 minutes of “Brit in Lotus on damp B-road”. On top of that, you avoid a needlessly clinical approach to car specs. It’s just pure, unadulterated appreciation for driving. Like many, I don’t come here to see the latest M4 video, I come to hear James’s unique take on whatever he’s prepared for us, because his take is always entertaining and authentic. And that is *truly* powerful currency on a platform such as RUclips. Bravo.

    •  3 года назад +16

Kinda same, I like that his review looks just like some familiar regular bloke telling you the truth, just more eloquently.

The most lovable feature of this channel, is that James gives you the impression of being the sort of bloke you'd meet in some isolated country pub, wondering why he's drinking lemonade with his pie and chips, and when you get chatting, he tells you he's leaving the beer aside so that he can enjoy his new car properly ... and then invites you to share the ride.
Then, after you've narrowly avoided prolapse because his new car is a bona fide rocketship, he turns to you with that inimitable smile, and says "goes well, doesn't she?" :D
This being followed by him reaching for a notepad, scribbling down contact details for where you can get your own, and dropping you off home with the exhortation to get in touch if you buy something interesting he hasn't driven before, so you can do a swap for a week. :)

@@Meekmoonlitmuse No. While I had 'reliability concerns' before buying my first Lotus (a new S4s) in 1996, I looked into it, found out the quality control really improved during the time GM owned Lotus, and bought my first of three new, from the dealer, Lotus cars.
No issues with any of the 3 Lotus cars I've owned.
My latest is an Evora GT. What a beast of power and handling.
A handmade car that you never see on the road due to limited production is a joy for those of us who can afford this privilege.

    • @Greg_Chase

@Emerald Pipes Learn to write software. You could make enough to pay cash for a brand new Evora GT in a few months if you do some software consulting. If you don't have rent to pay etc. you can pocket everything you make. A lot of people do this. It's detail-oriented work and not for everybody but it pays well.
The first new Lotus I bought in 1996 - an Esprit S4s - I paid cash for. I had only been out of college a short time, a couple years.
How did I do it? I got a job writing software at a startup and got 0.15% of the company stock as part of the 'incentive stock option plan.' It may not sound like much but that tiny percentage was worth millions.
When the company went public, the first thing I bought was the new Lotus.
People who start coding early can pay their way through college, have no student loan debt, probably be making more than their parents, then get rich in a few years writing code in startups.
      Good luck.

The 2GR-FE is an amazing engine. I had one in a toyota Aurion for 8 years. The guy i had driving it put 360,000km on it. Other than very routine oil changes and one set of oil cooler pipes (known problem, preventative maintenance) the was was super reliable. We would have sold it at 200,000 but we had spent that little on the car we took a gamble that it would stay reliable, what an engine, who ever thought it sounded like this.... amazing.

I own a 911 and agree with your comments. The Evora is just so much more fun to drive and has a lot more character. Surprisingly though, the Lotus dealer recommended to keep the Porsche, as the Lotus has too many quality issues. So I did…

I currently own a 996 Carrera (with a lot of engine improvements) and thinking to buy a Lotus for more fun to drive, but still I'm worried about quality downgrade. Maybe Elise/Exige, thanks to their semplicity, are a better choice against the Evora.

I always felt that the issue is lotus delivers a great drivers car but not a great car. For the price they charge most people aren’t willing to deal with awkwardly climbing over the door sills, the less than finished interior, the lack of a dealer network, etc. amazing to drive for sure but there’s multiple reasons I bought a cayman instead of a lotus to daily drive.

Agreed. I’ve always seen Lotus as sort of toy “kit” cars. Fun to drive, yes but unrefined with sloppy fit and finish and not in the same league as Porsche-but close to the same price. Financially they make no sense.

    • @TheBrendonian
      @TheBrendonian 3 года назад +3

I can respect that view, but for me, the sills are a non issue, and whilst the interior quality is slightly lacking, it feels way more special than the Cayman, which is nice, but a bit “generic German mass-produced car“ by comparison. Can I ask if you’ve actually driven an Evora? I’ve had mine 8 years now, and never given a second thought to the Cayman R I test-drive before I got it.

@@xjk5Mikel I would say the Evora NA is a far superior car to the Audi TT (depending on the year and spec of the TT), but the Evora may not be MUCH quicker. The Evora looks better, handles better, but may not be enough of a step up in speed to justify the extra cost. Unless the handling and looks are enough. II hope that helps. Evoras are not cheap right now, mine was the cheapest in the country when I bought it and now the cheapest NA even, is still almost $10K more than I paid for mine and it has a salvage title. In the UK you can find people to pull spanners on the car without too much ado. Anywhere else, and you have a problem.

As usual I had only heard of one, stop what I had planned and go around and learn what all of the excitement was over. Always an enjoyable ride going along with you. Thanx, Jack in New York. The late 2000s was such an underrated time for sports cars. 997 911, Evora, V8 Vantage, R8 4.2. Then the GTR had to come along and change the game. And I'd definitely get an early Evora before any of the above.

Test-drove a s/h Evora S at Bell & Collville sometime around 2015, when my 911 started showing signs of the usual engine problems. Absolutely loved it, for all the reasons Jay says. I’d looked at Lotus carefully and decided that the Evora really was the ideal one to get, usable but still fun. Spent the money rebuilding the 911 engine instead of px’ing it for the Evora; that was, with hindsight, a mistake, I should have fixed the 911 AND bought the Evora.

I can totally agree with you regarding the BMW E46 M3. Back in 2002 I had a carbon black coupe. I kept it for 6 months and 8k miles.
I had one decent hard drive in it and it killed the brakes, new discs and pads needed!

Great report on a magical car. Mine is a near identical model, built in 2012 when I bought it new after it served as the Brussels Motor Show press car for my dealer Lotus Thierry VERHIEST in Ostend, Belgium. The upgrades compared to the original car had just been introduced. It’s nearly this spec, albeit with the IPS auto box. It’s been my daily driver since,, with nearly 100000 KMS on the the car. Fabulous machine, with very limited issues, all ironed out by Thierry and his skilful and passionate team. If you want the best Lotus dealer on the Continent, look no further! I bought it after having owned two Elise’s, and I’ve never driven a better car. Sole difference with your yellow 400: my paint has never come off, not even by the wind…

Great video! Was massively excited when the Evora was unveiled, and then by pure chance I ended up driving near Loch Lomond at the press first drive event, with them rocketing past my then girlfriend's Fiesta. I hope with the Emira they do offer a genuine entry version of the car that is fast and fun to drive, rather than being scary to drive or afford. As much as I love the sound of the V6 a turbo 4 with around 300hp would be great for me, although I know many commenters will inevitably want a lot more power!

Main problem is the price - understand it’s a 911 equivalent but most people who have the money are not car enthusiasts therefore would more than likely buy a Porsche or an Aston. If it was priced more keenly and being a bit less luxurious or maybe a drop in power, may have appealed to more buyers.

Totally agree. Porsche are a large volume producer with large budgets to do things right. Lotus are low volume and simply cant compete so have to do things differently.
Hopefully it changes with large investments of Geely money invested into car production rather than previous owners who bought Lotus purely for their expertise as a way of developing their own cars

This automobile is really quiet special. It was overbuilt in just the right way. It looks like a true exotic. In a time when electric vehicles that are for all practical purposes a midsize economy cars can beat super cars in quarter mile races the true appeal of a contemporary sports car is handling and performance driving. Gone are the days of 0-60 being that which defines a sports car. As for the power plant in the Evora I can say without shame that the Toyota 3.5 is an excellent parring.

Yet only GT series Porsche 911s get a single mass flywheel, while every manual Evora gets a single mass flywheel as razor sharp throttle response shouldn't be optional. It's so strange to forgive such shortcomings of the Porsche!

The Toyota Aurion is the model you are thinking of. Just a big Camry really - nice cars, but very limited by the FWD, particularly the supercharged model which was torque steer central, and really not as good as it should have been given the power it had. I nearly bought one back in 2014, but after driving it was disappointed, so ended up getting a Ford Falcon G6E-Turbo, which is just as practical, much, much faster, and vastly more fun.

Really enjoyed this video as with all your early Evora content when no one else was covering it., Evora looks great in this cover, shame so rare. Here's hoping the Emira is more successful. Hard job taking on the Cayman and 911, think Lotus missed a trick with the original Evora that the Esprit did so well - providing supercar performance and looks for a lower price. I get the build quality concerns but surely the engine is bullet proof vs. Porsche issues and no rust!

the problem is that many people in this country think that foreign is better even when its not , all cars have issues but people forgive Porsche and ferrari but are not willing to forgive lotus , i think the evora is a beautiful car and has alot of personality it was hand built so people should give them a little slack , also they do not have the budget that porsche and ferrari do so they put most of their effort into the driving experience which is what makes a car special at the end of the day

It's not an investment that will keep ticking upward. But I imagine an amazing bespoke British racecar, powered by a reliable Toyota engine with low-cost drivetrain service costs. So I think I would really enjoy owning this car.

Despite sales probably not being as great as they hoped, their popularity is shown by how well they are holding their value. Not sure what that says about how Lotus manage to sell cars.
The Dany Dahar times (where the impression for many was they would dump the Evora, and they produced a load of vapourwear) probably didn't help. Especially as that was early in their production when their best sales would have been.

  • @BigUriel
    @BigUriel 2 года назад

The main problem with these was the price in my opinion. Most people would rather spend this money on something like an M3 or C63 and have something that is much more practical and better equipped, but can still be loads of fun. Also not long after the introduction of the Evora S you had cars like the M135i hitting the market which for most people kinda of made small sports cars obsolete.
Cars on the same price range like the 911 S sell because, well, it's a 911 and that car has its own market niche that will always buy a 911, and something like a GT-R is a much more serious performance machine for those who want a proper supercar.
The Evora sits in a sort of no man's land where only a sports car purist that is willing to pay a premium and sacrifice things like outright performance, equipment and practicality for great steering feel and responsiveness will consider. And someone who just wanted an uncompromising, fun weekend/track day car had the Exige which was faster and cheaper.
