Man I love Lydian mode. I heard a friend in college (I was a music major, he was a fellow sax player) say he thought Lydian was the “movie theme” sound. One day we were in class piano and he played that AMC Silence is Golden theme and everyone started laughing.
THANK YOU! "Teba's Encouragement" and the Vah Medoh ambience music are two of my favorite tracks from the BOTW soundtrack because they just nailed what it must sound like (musically) to fly.
WOW I’m so glad you commented, I didn’t know what this theme was called or I would have used this instead of the game clip 🤣 What a beautiful track. I remember very well the very first time I heard it like 2017 playing through the game. I freaked out and clipped it and listened to it on my Switch like 10 times. So beautiful.
Same! I was so annoyed that it was just a one-off piece that I never got to hear again in the game. It's just me, but that track alone was a big factor in deciding to purchase the soundtrack. Good grief it is just a phenomenal piece.
Maybe a bit late but at the beginning of this trailer, the melody really reminds me of *Spirited Away*, the "Dragon boy" theme in particular, so much so that I don't know if it's a musical citation or not. And it would not surprise me, seeing the major Hayao Miyazaki's influence on BoW and very much likely on Tears of the Kingdom. Hell, the last trailer has a direct visual citation FROM *Princess Mononoke*, when Link has his arm covered by malice. So, to look at those zelda music, maybe we can also compare them with the music from Miyazaki's movie and how it creates a sort of back and forth between the two. Lemme know what you think.
man you're such a genius. im playing the piano myself but i never noticed everything you said. i legit cant understand why this channel has so little subscribers
Wow what a nice compliment! I just love Zelda music and I kind of obsess over understanding the music I hear. I got a degree in music so I could better do that, then didn’t do music for a living 🤣 But this channel gives me a place to share it all. Thanks so much! And I posted my first real video 2 months ago so I’m already blown away by the reception. Just focusing on producing the highest quality content over cool musical ideas until I have more stuff for people to watch.
I would legit watch hours of this- it’s so interesting! The Lydian mode of the Columbia theme blew my mind- the music in Zelda is what convinced me to play botw so this is true to my heart! 🙌🏻
Hell yeah! I actually wrote a short essay some years ago on this very topic (but moreso focusing on its relation to Revali's character to serve as an analysis from a score-centered perspective) and also called that melodic theme present in the OST the "Flight" motif, found in Rito Village, Vah Medoh, and my personal highlight: the strings that come in during the activation of terminals in the Shrine of Resurrection dungeon (which I tie back to Revali as a champion, given that each new entry during that song brings in elements that represent the other four champions and their people, in my opinion). I really want to revisit that essay one day and rework it into something better, investigate further (since I'm no expert at all when it comes to music theory, and I didn't know about the Lydian chord either, I was trying my best) and repost it with a more solid framework of references. I would shamelessly plug that mildly embarrassing thing here but... I don't know 😆 I'm just very happy that you're actually exploring these topics within Zelda music, which I've always wanted to see and sought adding my little grain of sand into one day. Anyway, I loved this video! And I am even more excited for TotK knowing we'll get more amazing compositions and exploration of what made BotW's music so special ❤️
Dude that’s AWESOME!!! I’m so glad to hear that. I was a music major in college and spent most of my free time pursuing stuff I enjoyed as opposed to what the class material taught. And one professor gave us a project WE got to choose. So I analyzed Zelda’s Lullaby and all the things that make it “loop” perfectly and fit for a video game. I found a much more in depth essay about the “elusiveness” of Princess Zelda’s character, and how her theme avoids any major resolution, sort of keeps on the run. So I love stuff like that. Send me a RUclips like and reference to the shrine part you’re talking about and I’ll check it out! And feel free to post it here! All comments and ideas shared are welcomed! Glad you found my channel! And happy to have found you too.
Let’s go, you know I’ll be all over that. Honestly it’s overwhelming to think I may get a whole soundtrack immediately. I may to a quite drive by and give thoughts and then circle back. Or start with main themes and any popular ones and leave the others. This game soundtrack has to last me like another 6 years after all 😆
F I N A L L Y dude I just came from your theme break down video for the final trailer and I have never hit the subscribe button so fast. as much as i love lore videos & theory breakdowns, music is SUCH an integral part to the zelda series, yet nobody talks about it!!! im very happy to have found your channel, looking forward to what else you have to say :)) (also i've always exceptionally loved the rito village/revali/vah medoh themes and now i know why lol. thank you lydian mode!)
Absolutely!!! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I agree, like WHERE IS THIS CONTENT ON YT??? So many people would watch it if someone just did a good job with it. I’ve always had a love for these games and the music, I’m SO glad others are resonating with it. Thanks a lot!
By the way Benthoven, about why I put the vid as private when I released the Final TOTK Trailer breakdown- I intended to post Friday morning, so I uploaded it the night before and started putting tags, description, thumbnail, and then saw it was public and went Uh Oh let me change that. So you were one of the very few who got a sneak peak 🤣
I heard the Rito Village idea in that trailer track, for sure, but I always took it instead as an homage to the opening of Breath of the Wild, when leaving the Shrine of Resurrection. That was a G-F-G-F move that then stacked on Bb-Ab-Bb-Ab before resolving to the Silent Princess motif. The ToK trailer instead keeps rising and rising, ascending whole octaves before resolving.
Same idea of course, "building on BoW by rising way into the sky." The most recent trailer does the same thing by reusing the Silent Princess melody for a bit.
Nice! Yeah the first 16 notes are almost identical, although different keys. Probably not intentional but interesting that the flying themes sound the same. AnI do like the rising effect. Pretty cool. What is the silent princess theme?
@@ZeldaMusicTheory This one is the Silent Princess theme ruclips.net/video/GCe7noVKujg/видео.html This rendition is in the memory where Zelda talks about the plant, and the 2016 trailer ruclips.net/video/1rPxiXXxftE/видео.html gives a full expression of it before transitioning to the other half of the main theme.
Man, that moment when Link runs out and sees the view (or in the trailer you attached above runs and jumps with his paraglider), what a moment. Amazing music for amazing visuals. I remember how out of the norm this was for Zelda when it first came out. I wasn’t sure what to think of the music when it first came out. Thanks for sharing those!
I don't pretend to know anything about music theory, but I enjoy your videos all the same. Looking forward to your announced "Zelda Music Theory video". As for why people are not so fond of BotW's OST is probably because it wasn't as present/prominent like in other Zelda-games (in which you always hear one theme or another, depending on area). I like BotW's music and I appreciate the reason why it's subdued; it fits the theme of an apocalyptic world. Everything is subdued; the environmental story telling, the music, the atmosphere. It's quiet and you have to actively look.
I love this point. You’re exactly right, there’s a sort of emptiness, using what I refer to as “space.” Both in the music and in the ost. This was a part of my first ever recorded video from the first TOTK trailer, but I scrapped it. Because it was like a 30 min long boring video. But I took pentatonics and lydian/flying themes and made two smaller videos from it. Space got cut, but I love that concept. The map is expansive and space between things is huge. And I feel they used that effect in the music as well.
@@ZeldaMusicTheory Yeah I watched the Lydian one just now and currently watch "why TotK sounds Japanese". It's quite interesting. As mentioned, I probably am not able to hold up in a conversation about it, but I guess on a meta-level, following the thread of similarities in media in general and within Zelda, seeing recurring themes and easter eggs, is satisfying enough from my POV. Definitely keep up your high standards of analysis; even plebs like me who may be out of their element can still get enjoyment out of it. Just have to work the brain a little. Also one meta/out of universe-reason why BotW may have a more subdued OST, is because hearing the same Hyrule Field Theme for hours at a time could get tiring (since BotW is huge and you'll be in one area for hours (or days, depending on how thorough you are)). PS: yes the live-action Mulan movie is [insert derogatory word of choice].
Very nice! It’s so strange that so many of my favourite excepts of music featured Lydian - Dire Dire Docks, plus all the Zelda, Interstellar. Always loved Dragon Roost too! And my all time favourite of favourites - Toy Story!
That’s awesome! Yeah Dire Dire Docks is mainly the b6 b7 1 progression, but that b6 Major 7 chord is the one I am calling the “Zelda” chord. Interstellar same thing, that b6 b7 1 progression and the b6 Major 7 chord. Neither of those are so much Lydian as they are the b6 major 7. And the opening chord to Rito Village’s theme is the b6 major 7 with a bit of Lydian vibe, then the TOTK Trailer theme takes that and sits there for like 15 seconds. The Toy Story one is brief, just a 4 and 5 chord in a major key but for that moment when he flies it gives us that “fake Lydian” sound. So I guess none of those are perfect examples of Lydian, most of them are that b6 major 7 chord. I will do a video this year probably on all the times I hear that b6 major 7 chord in Zelda. It’s just too good not to bring attention to. I gave like 4 examples in BOTW in this video. Thanks so much for watching! I’m pretty accessible so let me know if you have any Q’s and check out my other videos! -Kevin
I’m 100% in agreement and rooting for everything you said in this comment 🤣 and if I had to pick just one: TOTK being awesome or my channel blowing up… I guess I can wait on channel success, gotta get another amazing Zelda game! #TakeOneForTheTeam 😆
I am so happy your channel exists. I found it this morning and and I was glued to all your videos. I'm a fan of gaming and a music theory student and I am so happy someone is finally scrutinizing zelda and thr music of it.
Thank you! I guess I want to capitalize on the TOTK music being released and all the people searching it right now. And when I have more subscribers I’m going to start doing games like Ocarina of Time. Or just Zelda in general. Lots of good ideas but I want to make sure if I make a great video people see it. And I’ve really enjoying diving into TOTK and BOTW. Thanks for following!
Thank you, your content is just linking movies , games and themes to each other, bringing sens an satisfaction, making people dreaming and feeling happy. At least it did for me.
loved the video, but I have to warn you: nintendo have took down some videos using the "totk main theme" from the gameplay presentation, because They're salty I guess xD. Best not to use the song again until may the 12th, although it could've been a rare occasion. It's just good to be on the safe side!
Hey I appreciate that! I am glad some people are catching the reference. It’s possible a claim could come later, so far no news. Hopefully it’s alright. Can’t wait for more Zelda music though!
I really like the way you described that chord/sound with so many examples great job. Lydian sounds very ethereal. Bright, but in an almost divine, otherwordly way (hence flying here, or dreaming elsewhere). Also I would argue that Lydian is in the major key by definition (just like fish belong in the water), and that the question of "fake lydian" is about whether or not the lydian mode resolves to the ionian mode (which tends to happen very easily because of that raised 4th being so unstable). But switching modes within a key doesn't change the key (I get that this idea is a bit controversial and that some people don't see it that way ie see "key" as a tonal center rather than a scale). That pull/call for resolution is always present in lydian, and the fact that it sometimes actually happens doesn't throw out the window what was played up to that point. It doesn't mean that it was "fake lydian", merely that the coin was flipped to another side. But it's the same coin, the sides are linked, even if you can't see both at the same time (the major key has MANY sides, and anyone who calls it boring just doesn't realize how big it is). You could say the resolution to ionian (or alternatively, aeolian) is almost like landing back from the flight. Or waking up from the dream. Lydian is an unstable state!
Man I love comments like this. Clearly you speak the language 🤣 So… completely agree with the way you described Lydian as ethereal, divine, otherworldly (Polar Express, Mario Galaxy, ET) Lydian is even more “major” than Ionian 🤣 because it’s so freakin bright. That’s actually what I think makes that b6 major 7 chord so beautiful. The mix between the “dark” sound of being in a minor key, but this sort of bright, beautiful sound within that. And major seven chords in general straddling major and minor but leaning towards major. Just like minor 9 chords straddle major and minor but lean towards major. But the two are closely related. 8BitMusicTheory goes into detail about how it’s so unstable with the raised fourth sounding like it’s trying to resolve into a different key, just like Locrian. I agree. I guess my stance on the whole “is this really Lydian if it only hangs out there for a second” is that no, it’s not. But for a moment it borrows that sound. 8BitMusicTheory does a great job explaining it as well. But music theory serves to help us categorize and understand the music, we are not subservient to it. So when it comes to understanding the music, I do think our ears hear it as a “Lydian sound,” but by our definition of how key changes work it’s really just changing tonal centers briefly before returning. Not a modulation. And in some cases like Toy Story it’s barely even a change in tonal center. But others like Zelda’s Lullaby I could swear are in F Lydian until measure 5, then I’m like “Oh it’s just starting on the 4th chord.” Love talking this stuff, thanks for commenting!
I just discovered your channel and oh. my GOSH! This is such a perfect blend of my extreme love of Zelda and it's music (and I totally agree with you, I have no idea why everyone is so hard on the BOTW OST either) and my college music degree which I am currently not using. 😂 This is so amazing! Easiest choice to subscribe I've ever made!
I feel so lucky to have found this channel! you’re so smart and good at finding examples of patterns in music. It makes the music feel more alive! I always feel smarter after watching your videos-such an underrated channel
Another point for Van Medoh theme is that in every Divine Beast theme there’s a very subtle Morse code message “SOS” when the champions are attacked by the Blights. Revali’s start’s later in the song than the others, symbolizing his pride.
Hi, great video! Only thing I recommend is using Roman numerals to indicate a chord and it’s quality. “bVI” and/or “VI/i” is easier to read than “b6 maj7”
Yeah you’re definitely right that’s the correct way to write it. I’ve done some of both (trying to “keep it simple” for non-musicians) but I think I agree with you. It would bother me if I saw it on someone else’s channel 😅
@@ZeldaMusicTheory In that case you can show a keyboard display on the bottom of the screen and highlight the keys in relation to the chord you want to demonstrate. So if you wanted to show a bVI7, do it in the context of C major and highlight Ab C Eb G. I would suggest the grand staff instead, but as you said, you want to keep things easy for non musicians to understand.
Great suggestion- both my Zelda full videos have the midi data loaded into a keyboard and displayed, but obviously not for the clips I reference, only my playing. Sometimes I’ll play along with the example. Trying to find a balance so it doesn’t take me 3-4 weeks on a single video. But obviously I chose quality over quantity and fixing stuff along the way. My other videos the midi stopped recording and got lost like halfway through and I didn’t realize until I was done. I was like “Yeah I’m not re-recording that.” But now I stop it every 15-20 min and save just in case. Feels like I’m playing the original NES Zelda and don’t want it to glitch and lose my file 🤣
@@ZeldaMusicTheory haha that’s very relatable, it’s so easy to get lost with playing, I’ve sure experienced that plenty. I’ve seen some people that display software that automatically notates the chords they play onto the grand staff as well as the keyboard, not sure what it’s called, though.
Let’s Goooo! When I first got the name last year, I was like “How is no one ALREADY Zelda Music Theory. Like really?” Love 8BitMusicTheory but I really wanted to specialize in Zelda and use some of what Charles Cornell does so well (so much better than me 😂). Thanks for watching!
Close. I’ll try to keep it simple. The original Zelda Title screen (and overworld) are in C major, all white keys. So you expect no black keys. Black keys are sharps and flats in C major. So the “Zelda chord in the key of C major would be Ab C Eb G. Normally with white keys you’re get a c e g. But they borrow the bVI chord from C minor, which is rooted in Ab. And the “quality” adds a 7, and it’s a major 7 chord. Beautiful sound and it’s everywhere in Zelda (and many other types of music), but since my background is in Zelda I call that bVI Major 7 chord the “Zelda Chord.” This trailer is mostly in e minor or e Dorian mode (minor with a raised sixth, so E F# G A B C# D E). So the Zelda chord in that key is C E G B. Sorry, that IS the short answer 🤣 It’s a little advanced. Mode Mixture is the concept of borrowing from the parallel major or minor key.
Man, I’m sure I’ll put out some more educational content. I do some how to play’s on my Patreon and eventually I’ll release some kind of course or something I’m sure. Thanks!
Thanks for the video so much! The Rito is my favourite tribe as well as everything about them! From Revali, Vah Medoh's theme and everything about it! I would love to see a whole analysis of each Divine Beast theme, especially Vah Medoh's as each contain SOS and SAD codes in it. Also, do ye know any music that sounds similar to when ye are about to enter Vah Medoh (teba's encouragement) and Vah Medoh's theme? The whole thing where the bird tries to fly but cant fly much higher, like ye mentioned in 6:33 I would love to know if there is music sounds similar to it! Thanks!
@@ZeldaMusicTheory Thanks for the recommendation! I love this one too! Though, I actually meant something outside Botw soundtrack or in the series or outside it. Because Vah Medoh's theme is so special to me that I adore it! It is phenomenal! My sincerest apologies if I brag and drag the conversation a bit too long, but I cant help but love your content since I discovered the Mario video you did! (Im a diehard mario fan) I hope ye are doig well!
Oh that’s awesome! To date that video is my biggest letdown in views. The short took off and I was so eager to drop the full length version and then it go so few likes. Right as the video was coming out too!
By the responses I get, it’s always seemed like I’m dropping a hot take when I say that the BotW score is my favorite of the entire series, but I honestly think it’s an expansive masterpiece. It’s unfortunate how under-appreciated it seems to be.
You know that’s kind of the Zelda way. Majorca’s Mask, Wind Waker, Spirit Tracks- many times Zelda critics are about 20 years behind the brilliance of Zelda creators. These games age very well.
That theme (sorry for the delayed response) is called the Song of Healing. It is perhaps the theme that best embodies Majora’s Mask and one of my all time favorites. I have a HOW TO PLAY on my Patreon for that one on piano.
I am having a hard time understanding the flat 6 major seven information. In some of these examples, isn't it just building a major seventh off of the VI chord? Like Daruk's theme for example - It outlines C minor descending to B flat major, descending to A flat major seven. Assuming that piece is in the key of E flat major/ C minor (and it sounds like it is) - that "flat 6 major 7" would just be a major seventh chord built off the IV, right? EDIT: I think I may have found where I am messing up - I am looking at these examples in the context of major diatonic as opposed to the minor key that they are in. So in C minor, A flat is the 6th which is where you get the 6 major 7. But with Daruk's theme being in C minor(?), that chord isn't a flatted 6th, it's just the 6 major seven.
Yeah you are getting it! So I agree with your whole first paragraph (yes C minor). The reason I say flat 6 is because in a minor key it is just the 6th note… but the sixth note IS flat. So is the 3rd and 7th. So I’d probably say flat 3 and flat 7 as well. It just clarifies. Music theory is less “is this title right or that one” and more “Hey can we all speak the same language and understand each other.” But the main reason I say flat six (bVI) chord is because I really consider that ti be the “Zelda chord” when they play those chords in the key of C Major. And then for sure you must say flat 6. But probably good practice to say it either way. Although it is not incorrect to call it just the 6 chord in minor. I would always say flat 6 for clarity. You got it! 👍🏼
@@ZeldaMusicTheory Awesome! Thanks for the reply. I really enjoyed the video. I can hear 4 piece chords pretty well in root position, but when there are lots of inversions or extensions beyond the 7th, it gets harder for me to hear. BOTW and TOTK harmony seems quite a bit more colorful than other Zelda games, so I really appreciated watching videos where someone who can hear it better than I can goes in depth on how these chords are built :) I noticed lots of Zelda tunes like to borrow chords from the parallel minor or major as well. I look forward to seeing more of your videos!!
Sooo interesting. But you seem to have missed another similarity ! Yes, these rising piano notes resemble the flying themes from BOTW... but not only. They also resemble the very first 4 seconds of BOTW's main theme. Here is the link : ruclips.net/video/cPWBG6_jn4Y/видео.html They are the exact same notes, in the exact same key! I think these notes in BOTW's theme were here to tell us : "welcome to a new world". In my opinion, TOTK's trailer referenced that theme to say the same thing.
@@ZeldaMusicTheory How could you define this musically? what style? the motives? the setting of the instruments to create a unique characteristic for the character? I ask a lot since I love music, and my favorite music in life is Zelda's 😇
Nice! I’m the same- love music but especially Zelda. So the first link above- there’s a sort of hemiola, or a rhythm of 2 vs 3 that gives it an upbeat, almost Latin feel. Ukranian Bell Carol has that same 2 vs 3. The chords are almost all the same as the original Revali’s Theme with a couple added. I’ll have to do a breakdown of all 4 Champions!
Great video as usual. I love using bVI M7 and then modulating to vi m7. I wrote a very zelda-sounding thing by going to the bVI of the dominant and doing that. It's timestamped here: ruclips.net/video/weVP5Q5OlA0/видео.html
Wow, that’s awesome! At 30 seconds definitely sounds like Zelda, and that bVI to vi does sound cool. It reminds me of a French movie I saw and the opening theme which basically went 1Maj7 to 1min7. Beautiful. A little like You Only Live Twice (James Bond). But at 1 minute it sounds a LOT like SIMS Mall Rat by Jerry Martin. Similar Pizz string and a 2516 kind of chord progression. Go listen and you’ll laugh 😂 At 2:06 ish you do that movement again, sounds very nice. It’s a little like “Intro Story/Prologue” from ALTTP Zelda. Thanks for sharing!
@Zelda Music Theory Thanks. Yeah, I understand. I just am kinda lacking in theory knowledge and I feel that having it be on songs I care about would be more fun. Also, can you add a midi reader on screen for when you play the piano? I don't have good aural skills so with your hands covering it's sometimes hard to tell what notes you're playing. It's just a minor thing, but it'd be a quality of life thing for people trying to analyze the chords you just kinda glance over.
You know what to be fair, I have never played it. I’m totally judging a book by it’s cover. I guess I’ve always skipped the Zelda games that weren’t on plug in consoles (like Link’s Awakening). But totally not fair of me, and once I was listening to a long video of 100 greatest Zelda compositions and a couple that grabbed my attention were from Spirit Tracks. So I need to listen to the OST at a minimum. But I will stand by the claim that it’s not nearly as highly anticipated a “sequel” 😂 I appreciate the comment! (I’ll definitely give it a chance)
Hahaha honestly it’s because I didn’t play them. I’m starting to come around. Also it was really only in comparing them as sequels. They aren’t nearly as highly anticipated as TOTK. But fair enough 😄
It is so cool so see how this mode keeps coming back through the years in all sorts of media!
Man I love Lydian mode. I heard a friend in college (I was a music major, he was a fellow sax player) say he thought Lydian was the “movie theme” sound. One day we were in class piano and he played that AMC Silence is Golden theme and everyone started laughing.
@4:19 literally fave Billie song, maybe the zelda chord is why I love it so much
Exactly. It’s not because it’s Zelda, Zelda uses it because it’s beautiful. Just a name I’m giving it 😆

Hahaha it’s a very catchy sound
Let’s goooo, a little collar in the comments section
Zelda, Tomb Raider, and Final Fantasy. Epic video game music that I can just listen to the soundtracks for as well as covers. Never gets old.
Tomb raider is amazing! I forgot about that one!
This is my favorite Lydian video ever. Thanks!
Love it! I have never seen anybody make connections like this. Keep it up!
Thanks so much! Working on a TOTK Final Trailer breakdown, stay posted.
Cant wait to see it!
Hahahaha
-Kevin
I'd definitely be interested in that video!
Can’t wait for you to breakdown TOTK music 🙏🏻
Editing my musical breakdown/reaction now. Probable release Friday afternoon. Check it when it drops!
this is actually mind-blowing, omg
Mind. Blown.
Very good job again, I hope this channel blows up soon, you deserve. Let’s hope totk will bring in some fresh material to analyze!
Let’s go.
I really liked how you visualized music around 1:40!
I appreciate that! I wish I better understood how everyone else visualizes music so I could teach ear training more effectively.
Seeing the music is helpful and people are hating BOTW OST? I guess folks need their ears cleaned.
The music is so beautiful. It’s just different than the other Zelda games. But it’s also perfectly suited to match the environment of BOTW. I love it.
It was definitely helpful, the way you visualize music
This is great! I'm glad I found your channel, I am really looking forward to see your upcoming series!
Thanks so much! I won’t do only Zelda, but it’s popular with the game releasing soon. Excited!!!!
loved the video, but I have to warn you:
nintendo have took down some videos using the "totk main theme" from the gameplay presentation, because They're salty I guess xD.
Hopefully it’s for calling it the “Main theme” and not just for using it. At some point I’d love to do a cover of that song. I’m a sax player anyway 🤣
Clearly you speak the language 🤣
So… completely agree with the way you described Lydian as ethereal, divine, otherworldly (Polar Express, Mario Galaxy, ET)
Lydian is even more “major” than Ionian 🤣 because it’s so freakin bright.
But others like Zelda’s Lullaby I could swear are in F Lydian until measure 5, then I’m like “Oh it’s just starting on the 4th chord.”
Love talking this stuff, thanks for commenting!
I saw your short video about this and had to check out the full length one!
Let’s goooo!!!!
Welcome aboard!
I feel so lucky to have found this channel! you’re so smart and good at finding examples of patterns in music. It makes the music feel more alive! I always feel smarter after watching your videos-such an underrated channel
Thanks so much!
Omg you just had to drop my favorite film music from interstellar in this :00 oof the feels
Hahaha I need to do a whole video on that honestly. So amazing.
Was I the only one who thought of the Stone Talus theme when I heard the Lydian chord?
Thank you for your video, so well done! I love the soundtrack of BotW so much. It is my favorite of all the soundtracks of Zelda.
I appreciate it! Zelda music is SO good.
i know you are zelda coded but i'd die for an interstellar breakdown
Oh my gosh one of my shorts I’ve already referenced it (The Zelda Chord) and stuff like that is 100% fair game
Whats the flying theme?! I've been looking everywhere for it and I can't find it but I've heard it before and it's driving me crazy!
So this is from the second trailer for TOTK I believe (or first). And it’s the end of the trailer. If you look up 1st or 2nd you’ll find it quickly.
Love it…solid editing 👌👌👌
Thanks!
amazing work, love your channel!
Thanks Erik!
Great content! Keep it up
Thank you Sir!
Great vid!
Thanks so much!
Omg ❤ such content ❤ so necessary for us in love of zelda and music
Let’s Goooo! When I first got the name last year, I was like “How is no one ALREADY Zelda Music Theory. Like really?” Love 8BitMusicTheory but I really wanted to specialize in Zelda and use some of what Charles Cornell does so well (so much better than me 😂). Thanks for watching!
@@ZeldaMusicTheory the zelda chord u say would be: B D# G A# ?
Beautiful sound and it’s everywhere in Zelda (and many other types of music), but since my background is in Zelda I call that bVI Major 7 chord the “Zelda Chord.”
This trailer is mostly in e minor or e Dorian mode (minor with a raised sixth, so E F# G A B C# D E). So the Zelda chord in that key is C E G B.
Sorry, that IS the short answer 🤣 It’s a little advanced. Mode Mixture is the concept of borrowing from the parallel major or minor key.
Where can I learn all this music theory? I LOVE it!!
The whole thing where the bird tries to fly but cant fly much higher, like ye mentioned in 6:33
I would love to know if there is music sounds similar to it! Thanks!
People are saying the moment Link runs out in the Great Plateau sounds like it. It’s similar.
So I’m lad you liked it! Those two Mario themes at the end, the Jimmy Fallon secret reference… so much good stuff! Glad you liked it.
Oh and I’m not sure what else will have similar sounds…
By the responses I get, it’s always seemed like I’m dropping a hot take when I say that the BotW score is my favorite of the entire series, but I honestly think it’s an expansive masterpiece. It’s unfortunate how under-appreciated it seems to be.
You know that’s kind of the Zelda way. Majorca’s Mask, Wind Waker, Spirit Tracks- many times Zelda critics are about 20 years behind the brilliance of Zelda creators. These games age very well.
What is the title of the piece that follows Saria's Song from Majora's Mask? 1:44
That theme (sorry for the delayed response) is called the Song of Healing. It is perhaps the theme that best embodies Majora’s Mask and one of my all time favorites. I have a HOW TO PLAY on my Patreon for that one on piano.
@@ZeldaMusicTheory Awesome! Thank you so much. :)
Music theory is less “is this title right or that one” and more “Hey can we all speak the same language and understand each other.”
But the main reason I say flat six (bVI) chord is because I really consider that ti be the “Zelda chord” when they play those chords in the key of C Major.
BOTW and TOTK harmony seems quite a bit more colorful than other Zelda games, so I really appreciated watching videos where someone who can hear it better than I can goes in depth on how these chords are built :)
I noticed lots of Zelda tunes like to borrow chords from the parallel minor or major as well. I look forward to seeing more of your videos!!
You’re exactly right. And it still takes me a bit to figure some of this stuff, it’s beautifully complex!
Sooo interesting. But you seem to have missed another similarity !
Yes, these rising piano notes resemble the flying themes from BOTW... but not only. They also resemble the very first 4 seconds of BOTW's main theme. Here is the link : ruclips.net/video/cPWBG6_jn4Y/видео.html
They are the exact same notes, in the exact same key!
I think these notes in BOTW's theme were here to tell us : "welcome to a new world". In my opinion, TOTK's trailer referenced that theme to say the same thing.
Wow, that’s true! Same key and very similar patter and notes!
you have heard the songs of Revali from Hyrule Warriors?? Is Amazing! what is your musical analysis on that?

@@ZeldaMusicTheory How could you define this musically? what style? the motives? the
setting of the instruments to create a unique characteristic for the character?
Wow I’ll have to check it out! And tinker with that on piano. Thanks for commenting!
I’ll get back with you on your video soon.
Go listen and you’ll laugh 😂
At 2:06 ish you do that movement again, sounds very nice. It’s a little like “Intro Story/Prologue” from ALTTP Zelda.
Thanks for sharing!
@@ZeldaMusicTheory Thank you very much for listening!
0:34 majora’s mask fans when someone even implys that another zelda game is better than it. yur so brave for saying that.
Spirit Tracks is so good though :(
I know I’m getting in big trouble for that! I need to go back and analyze it now 😂
Please talk more of the actual theory
Man it’s a balance between giving music theory lessons and being engaging. I’ll have to do some deeper dives sometime for the viewers like you.
I may go back to that- my MIDI auto deletes like every 15 min lol. So I keep ditching it.
@@ZeldaMusicTheory oh. Lol. Sorry about that. That's strange.
Y'know for someone who clearly loves music and Zelda, I'm surprised you don't like Spirit Tracks...
But I will stand by the claim that it’s not nearly as highly anticipated a “sequel” 😂
I appreciate the comment! (I’ll definitely give it a chance)
LAUGH AT SPIRIT TRACKS AGAIN I DARE YOU
Hahaha I’ve changed my tune since hearing it.
why u gotta laugh at the ds games man 😢
Hahaha honestly it’s because I didn’t play them. I’m starting to come around. Also it was really only in comparing them as sequels. They aren’t nearly as highly anticipated as TOTK. But fair enough 😄
