NASTY NASTY NASTY!!! TOO FUNKY !!! I appreciate what he says about not fighting your bass and that makes sense. I've seen plenty bass players fighting their bass. But here in this video, he does it effortlessly, even when gets in his zone!! Simply amazing!!!
Absolutely true when he says "no need to fight with your bass". That's exactly what I was doing when played actively, hence, was never successful in slap playing...
But you have to admit that some bass design really need you to fight with it sometime ;-) but the bass will allways be the winer as we have 2 hands, she has 4 strings and 92 notes (minimum) to fight with !
I can't help but smile when I see this guy. As a bass player, I recommend Brian as a #1 influence for any style bassist. He is versital beyond any other bass player.
Brien, most probably, the most versatile bassist on the planet. He plays all sorts of weird and wonderfully tuned instruments, tenor and piccolo and certainly is a monster double bass player. All this as well as being an incredible composer.....
Brian Bromberg can be considered the best doubler on the planet right now. This video definitely shows this guys virtuosity even on the electric. Who needs double thumping when you can play like this! Simply amazing! Thanks for posting Gigi!
Ive always used my middle finger for slapping and i always felt that i taught myself wrong but it was just easier for me.. nice to see that someone like Bromberg does it the same way :).. makes me feel a lot about about my bass playing
Besides his technical abilities what me strikes me the most: his solos do not sound like bassists solos. His vocabulary and phrasing is that of a guitar player. Impressive.
You know what you're talking about - hitting the strings with your left/fretting hand is as much a part of a tight and fluid slap technique as a mighty thumb. I can remember being shown how to do it. A good day.
I wish he re-introduced his lesson video. What he says is true. Don't FIGHT with your instrument!! Play relaxed. My bass instructor told me in order to playing fast, learn it "slowly" first and build it from there. Great video clip.
Bromberg is god. Every note is spot on. I cant think of any other bassplayer who hits every note he intends to. ..................................ok Michael Manring is god too.
Johan Rodén I have always used my middle finger more for popping than my index finger. It just makes a lot more sense. It keeps your hand in what I call a claw formation. And it’s more natural for the human hand in general.
I've seen this relaxation stuff been "promoted" in more videos , Gary Willis for instance also is a strong believer in not overstressing the muscles in your hands and ultimately your arms and shoulders. At some point, all the greats develop similar techniques. Brian Bromberg certainly is one of them. Not all people like his, sometimes guitar like playing, but that is the price you have to pay for being a bass genius i guess.
For anyone interested, I created a short tutorial if you want to learn how to play the little tapping lick he plays at around 1:33 of this video. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/7J1mb1R_fXo/видео.html :)
My two cents: Brian makes several excellent suggestions, but perhaps doesn't "hammer them home". One: if you allow your right forearm to rotate on an axis you end up with a smooth, fast slap technique. Two: letting your left hand do some of the percussive work can make things sound a lot faster with much less effort. Try practicing drum rudiments with the RH thumb and LH fingers (slapping down on the fingerboard) working opposite each other like drumsticks, and you'll see what I mean.
This dude has always been one of my favorites. Such a monster!
Brian is an absolutely incredible bass player. Amazing.
The most amazing bassist. I watched him warm up for a clinic on his upright, the room was silent, then erupted into applause. That was a warm up.
“All you have to do is relax!”
*plays ridiculous slap riff*
“Relaxing, that’s all there is to it!”
He is so insanely good lol
This guys just rules - that's all I can say.
I'm playng with him at the Clearwater Jazz festival tomorrow..Its gonna be so much fun!!!!

I should have found him long before, but I am really happy to happen to find this basist.
I can't help but smile when I see this guy. As a bass player, I recommend Brian as a #1 influence for any style bassist. He is versital beyond any other bass player.
This bass sound is so f***ing PHAT!!! LOVE IT!!!
Brien, most probably, the most versatile bassist on the planet. He plays all sorts of weird and wonderfully tuned instruments, tenor and piccolo and certainly is a monster double bass player. All this as well as being an incredible composer.....
I can't believe how crazy sick Brian is at slap bass. Simply amazing!
I think it's great that Brian is willing to share his bass playing knowledge with other people:)
That Bass sounds REALLY GOOD!!!!
Ive seen alot of great bass players in my day but......Brian is amazing!

Incroyable ! Quel son, quelle technique, quelle démonstration ! Super.
That triplets!😍
Absolutely SICK!
His talented skills are from another planet. My favorite song of his is "Come Together". That was the first of him that I heard - 8 years ago
brilliant.
Bob Mick is a custom builder here in Tucson (Brian's hometown)
He's made a lot of basses for Brian and I believe that's what he's using in this video.
thanks for dropping by Zander...yeah super brilliant!
Besides his technical abilities what me strikes me the most: his solos do not sound like bassists solos. His vocabulary and phrasing is that of a guitar player. Impressive.
I may have no idea what I'm talking about, but I swear that his left hand is doing as much slapping, if not more, than his right.
You know what you're talking about - hitting the strings with your left/fretting hand is as much a part of a tight and fluid slap technique as a mighty thumb. I can remember being shown how to do it. A good day.
YES!

holy crap i never thought of using that finger
@sebhartke That bass is his DEAN signature,he has a couple of them.
Good bye tension/pain hello more slap and pop lines
Poping with the middle fingers feels so much more natural than poping with my index finger
thanks
Johan Rodén

For anyone interested, I created a short tutorial if you want to learn how to play the little tapping lick he plays at around 1:33 of this video. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/7J1mb1R_fXo/видео.html :)
@gretschjazzer I agree, his "insight" wasn't exactly helpful... if you slap, how do you go about doing it?
@Jack458111 Agreed, he's awesome tho... but not to fond of slapping either :P

This man is just ridiculous...
Does he not use double slap technique here? It is hard to tell
he means he is popping with his middle finger not slapping, right?
@virgilioherrera patitucci is the god
What song is that? From 03:25
the song is Bass Face of the album Choices
+Nahuel Machado Sweet! Thank you
Anyone who dislikes this is a hater!
18 haters in 4 years, not bad.
He didn't tech shit he just showed of.
he taught yah everything this video showed you
the use of relaxing and using your thumb and middle finger to slap
and then he demonstrated with a song
1. Victor Wooten
2. Brian Bromberg
My sentiments exactly!
O_o can you repeat please ???

uuuuhhh......uuuhhhh...... I GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!
@pabliyin29 thank God he switched to Carvin. Dean sucks!!!
My Opinion: Slapping isn't the coolest thing you can do with a bass. pino anyone?
