    I moved to Costa Rica from San Diego 8 years ago. I am retired military and later sold my small business to put things in order to make this transition with clarity. Never had been to CR, but the adventure of taking this new direction was something that made me feel totally alive. My family was very supportive in my decision and we have all worked toward supporting my decision. I met the love of my life (a professor at the National University of CR) When I made the decision to move here, I did not have all the details...and then...the magic presented itself. No regrets...I love my life here.

    I actually live in Costa Rica and one of the biggest advantages here is that you do not need a car. Public transportation goes everywhere. Also the rent here is low compared to the U.S. My first apartment was $160 a month in a shared living space. I recommend it but try to find a job before you come. Lots of call center jobs.

    Hi Sarah, nice vid. I have a couple questions that you might be able to answer for me. 1) How did you find your first place to live? 2) What did you do about a vehicle? 3) Would you be willing to be a source of information or contact for people who are interested in moving to CR? 4) I will be relying on my retirement check to get me by until I settle in, then maybe find a side gig. Can I find a financial institution to transfer my retirement checks to once I arrive? Great job and good luck to you! You are a brave woman to have made such a drastic move! Hope to hear from you! Thanks! 😎

    great video Sarah, I admire your story about moving to Costa Rica without a real plan and that everything seems to be working out well. My wife and I are currently in our 7th year of a 5 year plan to move from Canada to Costa Rica. Lots of planning involved, lots of stumbling blocks (as we are currently building a home from 4000 miles away,) and then the pandemic..Hoping that our plan will be fully executed in March of 2021! Keep up with the great work with your youtube videos, facebook posts, etc. I will certainly be checking out your blog as well.

      Costa Rica is very nice place to live if you have money coming in every month like a secure income . Because if you don’t have legal papers , you cannot work anywhere to get a normal jobs. Or if a company is willing to help you to get your legal working permits .this is is a big deal when you move . You need lawyers fee to process your working permit and if your investors over there . I'm thinking about this idea; the other countries include: Thailand, Bali, Vietnam, and Panama. I've traveled and lived around the world for the past 54 years. Hard to decide which country to retire. :)

      I have spent much time in Panama. It is a country full of charm and possibilities...and civil stability. Wonderful...wonderful culture. It is true Panama offers more incentives to retired foreigners...however, it is not just about bribery to gain dollars from the north. CR is not a ripoff...any country in in the world can take advantage of your ignorance. Do your homework first and then make your best decision. Every country in this world can rip you off if you don't pursue due diligence.

      I found Bali horribly touristy. I've traveled extensively thru Thailand and do love it. Just consider the expense and time in getting back home..if it's America. A 24 hour journey (that's with close connection times, not sitting in airports for endless hours which is cheaper) is a bear and cant be done on a dime for family emergencies.

    Not helpful at all. The title says "How" not "What to do". Obviously I'm going to sell my car, pay off my debts, find a place to go, and buy a plane ticket. This is very obvious information. You didn't tell me "How" to move there. Are you on a tourist visa? Did you apply for temporary residency? Where did you find the forms to apply? Where did you get your criminal background check performed? What is the paper process like? How long does getting a visa take? Should I apply for a visa before I leave the states, or do I do that once I arrive in Costa Rica?

    Do you need to shut down your bank accounts in the US and open accounts in Costa Rica? I wonder if there are US banks there or if I would be able to access my money from the US? Also speaking of money, do they use US dollar bills there or do they have a different currency, or both?

    • @SarahElenaDesignsLife
      @SarahElenaDesignsLife  3 года назад +1

      Hi Chelsie! In CR you can use both, US dollars or colones ;) You can open a bank account in Costa Rica, you can use an ATM to withdraw money from your bank... plenty options. You could ask in a Facebook group like this: facebook.com/groups/movetocostarica or this facebook.com/groups/114368828959992 and check what people is doing and decide whats is best for you :)

      Hello! US Citizens upon entry to Costa Rica will automatically get a tourist visa. But just make sure that your insurance and return flight match the duration of the visa that you want. You will get a maximum of 90 days.
      For green card holders from the USA, I did read that you can enter in Costa Rica and get a tourist visa. Just make sure to bring the Green Card and passport. But also, double check with the Costa Rican embassy before booking!

      Lol you don't make sense. Don't spread false info about working. You aren't going to work there anyway. Not in the sense of a typical 9 to 5 job. Who would go from making 3k plus a month in the states to doing the same thing making 500 dollars or less a month in Costa Rica. No body is doing that. Most people who aren't collecting retirement work online for a company outside of Costa Rica. If you have some cash the. Open a business and hire just one employee. The law says you can't work at your own business but no body follows this law. You hire one employee to follow the law and work there as well. My point is there is always loopholes to everything. Yes, food does cost a lot there if you want to est certain things. But you can also eat cheap as well. Just like you said beans and rice. There are pros and cons to everything. I can live in Costa Rica and wake up to the waves hitting the shore every day but I don't get my favorite sushi anymore. I'll take living on the beach.
