What a totally underated talent.....They would always cast him as tough brute or something, but hes got more charm and humour then anyone. A great interview
His performance in the Night of the Hunter was a tour de force and he was a much more sinister Max Cady than De Niro who was almost comical in his portrayal.
Mitchum is beautiful in those shades. A real man of which there are none today. Highly intelligent and absolute naturally great at ease actor. What a presence and that walk! So missed!
Mitcham went to Vietnam in 1966 & 1968 to touch base with the troops.Took phone numbers from the soldiers to relay information to their loved ones.He called every soldiers relative,& there were hundreds...classy guy.
Robert Mitchum was a man's man. Down to earth, blunt, tough, honest, charming, pick an agitative and it'll fit. Here he goes on the Dick Cavett show and he's drunk!!! That takes major stones to be stoned on national TV and not care, yet, pull off a brilliant interview. He was old Hollywood at it's most excessive and it's most vulnerable. God Bless Ya Robert Mitchum!!! We need more real men like you right now, except without the excessive boozing.
Nah man, the excessive boozing is all part of the coolness! He couldhandle the drink his drinking levels were legendary he could drink excessively and still appear to be quite normal this interview is one example. unlike say Oliver Reed who would make a joke of himself he couldn't handle that much like Mitch could.
this guy is so cool he makes me feel cool. I believe him when he says he likes to hide--I think sunglasses are good to hide out behind--people can't see your eyes.
When you think of who has an Oscar ( anyone!) and Mitchum doesn't it's maddening. The man was Deniro before Deniro was Deniro. He is considered a "naturalistic" actor ( and he was) but he also could do flawless accents and had a huge range. He also worked a lot harder than he wanted to admit. This interview shows just how articulate and quick he really was. Also Cavett is just great. He actually LISTENS to his guests. (Larry King are you listening?)
+Jackie Rave Thanks for the kind words! I'm. a huge John Wayne fan and it was rare that anyone could " out charisma " Duke Wayne, but in El Dorado Mitchum matches Wayne step for step without "hamming " it up. ( well, maybe a teeny bit) Regardless he was just great and Night of the The Hunter is Mitchum's The Searchers. Like Wayne, he gave a Performance that I can't see anyone else doing. An Oscar would still not be enough for that role. ( also scared the stuffing out of me)
Mitchum is part of a lost generation of American Gentleman. They were the children of the Great Depression. Self reliant, good men, with a tough exterior which they needed to survive, but with a heart of gold.
I think he is one of the most REAL actors I've ever listened to... I really like this guy... I watched a few interviews with him and was a bit put off at first and thought he was arrogant and difficult... I have completely changed my opinion about him.... his reply to what's the key to a 30 yr marriage is CLASSIC! LOL
He was a very simple man. Not modest, but simple. He didn't overcomplicate things which was good, it's one of the things missing in our time and movies.
there are very few actors, male of female who would honestly speak their minds...either for personal reasons or their agents prevent them from doing so..It is so refreshing hearing an intellignt, honest , down to earth actor like him speak the way he is in this interview. I have watched this several times...such a joy
Dick Cavett held a broadcast-long interview with Robert Mitchum in 1971. It stands today as one of the great conversations in entertainment history. This upload in seven parts was by babyidontcare23.
Get a copy of his biography" Baby I dont Care"he was quite a guy, amazing that he lived to be 80 the book title is a line he says in the film noir" Out of the Past"aka Build my Gallows High.
I picked up a book about WW11 in the library. There was a picture of some Russian officers in a room. One officer stood out. He was a dead ringer for Robert Mitchum a true doppelganger. Mitchum made it look easy.
It's a beautiful lesson from the character of this man ,cool,( keep cool man) even with e.g.a kettle with its water boiling still manage to whistle .when discovering the unfaithfulness of. his wife (Ryan's daughter) I love the story. Thanks for the video.
Mitchum is loaded from the start, yet he keeps his cool throughout the whole interview. Few actors would/could do that these days. Once he made his stake, much like Brando, I don't think Mitchum gave a fuck about Hollywood or how the producers "wanted" him to act. That's what makes these guys cool.
Robert Mitchum, is one of.my favorite Actors. He, seems like he's really down too Earth. The night of the Hunter. What a film. Thunder road Was, was a cult classic. I always Thought he was really Cool. John Lorberter
Robert was part of the infamous 'studio system,' and studios like RKO would purposely put big, award-winning stars in crap films, just to make a cheap buck. The studios KNEW the film was crap, but they were in the business of putting out volume. In fact, after making 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' Monroe was 'stuck' in a film she hated, with Mitchum (the two were old friends), 'River of No Return.' Monroe, like Bette Davis, loathed the studio system because she wanted quality, not quantity.
Ahh, the good old days when male Hollywood stars were real men...I can't really think of any actor today that could properly walk in Robert Mitchum's shoes...except perhaps Michael Madsen
@DINOLOVER6717 He's did a few but most aren't well-known films. I'll be posting a clip of one of my favorite comedies he did, The Last Time I Saw Archie.
Hey @DINOLVER6717,R MITCHUM did some comedies and did funny stuff in some. He and GEORGE KENEDEY did a Wesrten Film called Good Guys & Bad Guys in '69 and there is funny parts in it.He stared in A Family For Joe 1990 to '94 on tv and it was a comedy. You'll find them on RUclips. Peace.
I liked the movie he made thunder road. There was a reunion in 2007 in Asheville Carolina where the movie was made.James mitchum came.He bought the 1950 ford movie car in 1958.
When one interviewer asked a second interviewer (Dinah Shore) how Mitchum had so many lady fans, Shore said "because he's dangerous". Even in an affable interview like this you can sense a broiling sense of his not suffering fools.
Who would have thunk it??? Seems like Robert Mitchum is really Joaquin Phoenix, but "back to the future" sort of.....SUCH A SIMILARITY!!!! particularly in common with Mr Phoenix's David Letterman interview, "with the beard"..... Natch, Mr Mitchum seems more mature...but the similarity is there, if you have the time to look...
@Niiiiiiiiizette Honestly I would find someone who speaks English very well to help you. Even with subtitles there's alot of vocabulary and idioms that only a native speaker would get.
What a totally underated talent.....They would always cast him as tough brute or something, but hes got more charm and humour then anyone. A great interview
His performance in the Night of the Hunter was a tour de force and he was a much more sinister Max Cady than De Niro who was almost comical in his portrayal.
“Almost comical” was intentional though
The best entrance i ever seen for an actor, that walk and the accompanying music is so apt for a guy like Mitch.
I wish he had his own radio show I could listen to Robert talk all day loved his voice.
Smooth as butter. what a legend, & probably one of the funniest . Love Mitchum
Mitchum looks sharp as a tack! so cool
I think he's honestly one of the coolest people ever. And I want those glasses.
Mitchum is beautiful in those shades. A real man of which there are none today. Highly intelligent and absolute naturally great at ease actor. What a presence and that walk! So missed!
What a dreamboat and an incredible actor. Robert Mitchum rules.
Mitchum is the coolest dude ever, you can tell he lit up right before he came on stage!
I've never seen Cavet that nervous! Cool dude, this Mitchum.
Mitcham went to Vietnam in 1966 & 1968 to touch base with the troops.Took phone numbers from the soldiers to relay information to their loved ones.He called every soldiers relative,& there were hundreds...classy guy.
The US invasion of Vietnam was illegal under international law.
Happy birthday to the peerless Robert Mitchum. Born on this day 100 years ago today.
What a cool guy ! They don't make them like this anymore. Great actor as well. He is one smooth dude.
Wonderful interview. Probably the coolest guy I’ve ever seen.
I always loved his voice he had that narrators voice.
Robert Mitchum was a man's man. Down to earth, blunt, tough, honest, charming, pick an agitative and it'll fit. Here he goes on the Dick Cavett show and he's drunk!!! Cool guy...the old days, The honest "street poet" he lived...he went without, he gave it back!!! That's Mitchum. Rip xxx
this guy is so cool he makes me feel cool. I believe him when he says he likes to hide--I think sunglasses are good to hide out behind--people can't see your eyes.

Tommy Petersen Oh so true !! Nice to see somoene young that recognizes the talent of this fine actor !!

Mitchum is part of a lost generation of American Gentleman. They were the children of the Great Depression. Self reliant, good men, with a tough exterior which they needed to survive, but with a heart of gold.
A great man who never made a bum film.
A great raconteur interviewed by a man who knew how to get the best out of his superstar guests ...
Robert Mitchum is hilarious! Why didn't he do comedy?! He's so smooth but so...like, witty. It's great.
Into the past a great Mitchum Noir movie from the 40s with Jane Greer , stunning looking couple together on screen.
This is what Robert Di Niro whants to be like when he grows up
I think he is one of the most REAL actors I've ever listened to... I really like this guy... I watched a few interviews with him and was a bit put off at first and thought he was arrogant and difficult... I have completely changed my opinion about him.... his reply to what's the key to a 30 yr marriage is CLASSIC! LOL
He literally was speaking "Deviousness ".....when I was reading your reply.......over 30 here.....he ain't lying.....lol
Why is he so cool ? He has a wonderful sense of humor.
Because he didn't try too hard. That's why he's so cool and smooth.
He was a very simple man. Not modest, but simple. He didn't overcomplicate things which was good, it's one of the things missing in our time and movies.
He's wearing his "Just Smoked A Joint" glasses....
Only Sterling Hayden was baked more often than Bob.
Fuck the government.
Enjoy life? Yes.
Fuck off, jobs.
Hahaha totally
You got it!
I love this interview...I don't know what he's taken to "chill" but it must've been good...real good...but Mitchum is awesome! Dig Cavett, too
Reds. Seconal
Nah he was a pot head@@Mississippi_Boomer
Such an amazing actor, but I would've been terrified meeting him in real life.
I love his jazzy way of talking - "later fo' that quitin'"
It's hard to believe there was a time when men were just men, without apology. My dad's generation...Loved this interview.
wlljohn bey you talk like you only have missionary sex
Man I just loved him as a kid my first crush ! ……he was so good in everything….
there are very few actors, male of female who would honestly speak their minds...either for personal reasons or their agents prevent them from doing so..It is so refreshing hearing an intellignt, honest , down to earth actor like him speak the way he is in this interview. Dick Cavett held a broadcast-long interview with Robert Mitchum in 1971. It stands today as one of the great conversations in entertainment history. This upload in seven parts was by babyidontcare23.
Roberto Benigni has an Oscar and Mitchum doesn't. Takes about three seconds to realize that people like Mitchum are bigger than the Oscars.
Cuba Gooding won an Oscar.
oscars mean shit
Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize
Both actors are exactly the same off screen as they are on it.
If there was a legend, this guy was one.
Robert Mitchum seemed like a really down to earth, no BS guy.
Brilliant in Cape Fear.
What a fantastic guy!
I love Dick Cavett as a host/ interviewer so respectful you don't see that kind of respect, politeness these days...
STILLDecibel D.C. is nervous about Mitchum's reputation .
jock barblessable
Back in the day you would be in front of an icon ...I bet it would have felt worse if Marlon Brando had been in that seat he he
You can see the emphysema difficulty breathing starting. Rip. Mr mitchum
Get a copy of his biography" Baby I dont Care"he was quite a guy, amazing that he lived to be 80 the book title is a line he says in the film noir" Out of the Past"aka Build my Gallows High.
Why did Larry King say this guy was the worst guest
Larry King can't interview. He wants to talk over everyone. One look from Mitchum he probably shit himself.
I picked up a book about WW11 in the library. There was a picture of some Russian officers in a room. One officer stood out. He was a dead ringer for Robert Mitchum a true doppelganger. Mitchum made it look easy.

Damn ,Mitch looks sexy in those shades.
One of the best.
and arrived looking sharp

Bloody hell he is stoned ..legend

Better actor the John Wayne deserves more credit
Like Steve McQueen, Robert Mitchum oozed masculine coolness.
"...deviousness i should think" -- he is so wonderfully dry and much too laid back to pretend anything ))
Robert was part of the infamous 'studio system,' and studios like RKO would purposely put big, award-winning stars in crap films, just to make a cheap buck. Here from Larry king interviewing Eric Andre
Ahh, the good old days when male Hollywood stars were real men...I can't really think of any actor today that could properly walk in Robert Mitchum's shoes...except perhaps Michael Madsen
Tom Brady is good, as is Robert Downey Jr.
@Ashley Schultz They aren’t “real men”.
He did comedy. He hosted Saturday Night Live and he was in the film Scrooged.
seriously, a time when men were men - even actors.
EXACTLY !!
He's talking about Macao with Jane Russell, good movie imo.
Robert Mitchum. Dream boat.
Not at all like the impression I get from his movies. Very mercurial, highly intelligent. Reminds me of Dean Martin here.
very well spoken
cool cool cool
love him.
'out of the past' is the film to check
MrSnaketoe aka "build my gallows high" , film noir at its best .
@babyidontcare23 Oh that would be soo awesome! Please do! Thanks again, if i hadn't said it before, for posting this one! I love it!
coolest cat ever
@raybradburywriter Totally agree. I love his dry humour!
"The privilege of anonymity...."
He is his own man and a nightmare for any interviewer.

Just seen this on Bored To Death.

Genius.
@DINOLOVER6717 The Archie clip is already up. I'm in the process of posting another bio tonight so look for that as well.
@DINOLOVER6717 He's did a few but most aren't well-known films. I'll be posting a clip of one of my favorite comedies he did, The Last Time I Saw Archie.
Hey @DINOLVER6717,R MITCHUM did some comedies and did funny stuff in some.
He and GEORGE KENEDEY did a Wesrten Film called Good Guys & Bad Guys in
'69 and there is funny parts in it.He stared in A Family For Joe 1990 to '94 on tv and
it was a comedy. You'll find them on RUclips. Peace.
What kind of sunglasses is he wearing?
After way too much research, I am betting Dior Homme black tie frame with prescription lenses. Vintage Sunglasses website and ebay have them. Cheers
@DINOLOVER6717 reminds me of Bill Murray
One of the pioneers of acting. In my opinion
Cool = Mitchum.
👏 Браво ! 💘 💘 💘🇷🇷🇸 🇸💒 🌐
And Ryan's Daughter
Michael Madsen before Michael Madsen.
Yes!!! I'll bet Madsen worshipped him
The American version of Oliver Reed, or Oliver Reed is the English version of Bob Mitchum ?
OHHHHH MITTENSSSS
But i like Shrimpys!
HE IS STONED....
Yes. For example, check his reaction when Cavett laughs at his 'immoral face' comment at about 5:06.
He doesn’t rise to the usual bait. Never know what he is going to say.
Who would have thunk it??? Seems like Robert Mitchum is really Joaquin Phoenix, but "back to the future" sort of.....SUCH A SIMILARITY!!!! particularly in common with Mr Phoenix's David Letterman interview, "with the beard".....

@Niiiiiiiiizette Honestly I would find someone who speaks English very well to help you. Even with subtitles there's alot of vocabulary and idioms that only a native speaker would get.
I always thought there was a weird physical resemblance between Mitchum and John Lennon
Larry King, babyidontcare23! Thanks!
Funny guy
