UPDATE: We have videos dubbed in Spanish and Portuguese using an artificial voice via aloud.area120.google.com to increase accessibility. See our Amoeba Sisters en Español channel ruclips.net/channel/UC1Njo3LBy53cOPngz6ArV8Q and Amoeba Sisters em Português ruclips.net/channel/UCYTQPX2X_mXe0ZMPi0fXxbg Want to help translate our subtitles in any language? Learn more here www.amoebasisters.com/pinkys-ed-tech-favorites/community-contributed-subtitles
*We make sure to keep a pinned comment for clarifications or corrections on our videos!* EXPAND FOR DETAILS.
We were able to remove a short segment from this video - as for a few seconds in this video after meiosis I is correctly shown- an image pops up showing how the chromosomes and nuclei would look near the end of meiosis *II* and that image shouldn't be showing yet. We greatly appreciate being made aware of it so we could remove that segment with this image that pops in; sorry it got past our editing! You can check out the table of contents in the video description for updated time stamps.
Also, some helpful things we wanted to add:
    (1) Crossing over in meiosis has a major role in producing genetically diverse offspring; however, Pinky learned in one of her graduate courses that mitosis crossing over- while very rare (likely why it's uncommon to see it discussed in intro bio courses)- can occur. It can have a role in human cancer and "loss of heterozygosity." While this unusual event is not discussed in this intro video, here is a further reading suggestion where you can learn more about it: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2648873/ (2) Our video is intended to focus on animal cells (as drawn). Our Venn diagram shows some differences of mitosis and meiosis, but there are some exceptions to this, such as in plants. This venn diagram does not apply to all organisms (such as plants). (3) We've noticed comments asking if cells are diploid or haploid after meiosis I. They are haploid after meiosis I. If you would like more information about why this is, check out one of our favorite references---the peer-reviewed open source textbook based at Rice University OpenStax. Here is the exact page where it discusses this: cnx.org/contents/GFy_h8cu@11.6:GYZS3DDP@9/The-Process-of-Meiosis

@@avantika6077 When Dna duplicates in S phase of interphase having 46 Chromosome with 46 chromatid . After replication it forms 46 chromosome with 92 chromatid.
In each duplicated chromosome 2 chromatids are exact copy of each other and are known as sister chromatid.
These chromatid seperate in Mitosis to form two daughters.
Each daughter will have 1 chromtid out of two and as these chomatids were similar so they are exact copy of parent .

@@abdiazizhassan7467 The thing these kids don't yet realize, is it's not the material itself that makes college hard, it's the pace and every other class you have to take along with them. For instance, yes, we're covering mitosis/meiosis, but we're also covering ncRNAs and all the specific functions they each perform and then what happens if they don't work right etc. The depth of knowledge is greater than anything I studied in high school.

This side by side explanation is so dang helpful! I have my second Bio10 exam next week covering several subjects, including meiosis and mitosis. When put side by side like this, you can really see the obvious differences. Seeing that meiosis PMAT 2 is similar to mitosis PMAT 1 really helped me flesh out the differences and similarities. Mind blown over the zygote immediately starting mitosis, I was curious about this. So meiosis is JUST for creating sperm and egg, and once sperm and egg meet, it's back to mitosis. Awesome! This channel has been so helpful the last few weeks. Thank you! Love the info and artwork.

@@rogertang9446 What? What are you upset about? What’s wrong with using a script? I think you people assume you are being attacked, and just go on an unnecessary tirade about absolutely nothing. It’s HIGHLY probable that a script is being used. Nothing is wrong. It’s also possible that it is extemporaneous. I literally said nothing to the effect of it being a bad thing.

Thank you so much for your videos!!! They really have gotten me through some serious "jams" in Biology. In Science, Biology is my favorite section, and that's what I wish to pursue later on. Your videos help me understand some of the hardest things in Biology, so thank you for all that you do. Soon, you should make a video comparing translation and transcription (if it works well) which is another one of those tricky topics in Biology.
