@The Cantrell Project - Well he's not the original guitarist for Megadeth so yeah, people can question his style on a song he didn't write and is currently playing. Marty wrote that awesome solo, so nobody can question Marty's playing in the songs he wrote. Dystopia has an awesome solo that Kiko wrote, nobody is going to question Kiko's playing in that song's solo because he wrote it.
I'm glad Kiko responded to the fans about his playing, this is very rare for guitarist on his level to do.

Of course I didn't mean to be a dick or anything but Maybe he read the replies to my comment too because I didn't say he was playing it wrong. Anyway it's an honor that Kiko took 3 minutes of his busy life to answer my comment (part of it at least).

@Mr. Metalhorse - I've heard many RUclipsrs say he should down stroke Tornado of Souls. I don't think he was talking directly to you, but more for everyone who made the similar comment. Also the down stroke or up/down stroke doesn't really seem to change the chopping crunch sound. Even I can make it sound the same with just down or up/down strokes. What Kiko is doing to change the sound is he's hitting single strings instead of power chords, and he's letting the single notes ring out a little in the middle and towards the end. I think Kiko can play it easy up/down strokes and make it sound just like if it were all down strokes, but he likes to make it sound different.
Also I think down stroking the riffs is pretty tiring after playing a few songs first. Up/down strokes is easier and less stressful.

I gotta say, Kiko really does a great thing for his fan base. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone at his level, regularly putting out practice videos, or jam sessions or anything else. He’s absolutely a great model for others to follow. He shows that he’s a humble down to earth guy. We need more players like him who will regularly make time for the fans.

Well, I think we can easily solve the question of whether or not he's playing a riff wrong. We just need to ask the guitarist for Megade-OH WAIT...
Seeing as he is the current guitarist in Megadeth, he can play it the way he wants. Is it correct to the original recording? No. It sounds completely different with upstrokes. Does it sound better or worse? That's up for debate. I prefer the way Marty Friedman originally played it. All downstrokes give it a more fast, aggressive, powerful feel; everything a thrash metal band is suppose to be.

@ghassen hamden - Kiko is a noble gentleman for actually responding to his fans. But they're the songs created by someone else, not Kiko. Of course he's going to get backlash for changing notes on great classics he didn't create. If he changed the notes on Angra, people wouldn't mind because Kiko wrote songs in that band and hence can do whatever he likes to those songs. In Megadeth it's a different story, if anyone replaced Kirk Hammett on Metallica and played the songs/solos different they too would also get crap from the Metallica fans.
This is what happens when you join a legendary metal band and try to change their already legendary riffs/solos. Remember when Korn played Metallica's One at the 2003 MTV Icon Awards and skipped the solo? They got shit on for doing that by hardcore Metallica fans.

@ghassen hamden - He didn't change them on the albums since they're already recorded. He changes them in live performances, and that's where all the complains are coming from. I can explain it in specific details but get ready for some long ass walls of text.

There is no point in having a top tier player like Kiko in the band if he can't add his flavor to the songs. My impression is that Dave is elated to have such a talent on stage and in the studio rather than some robot who tries to sound exactly like the recording.
That is true, but Megadeth already had an extremely successful recipe that will never top.... I'll leave it right there.
… no one plays like Poland, no one plays like Friedman, no one plays like Kiko. Megadeth's recipe has evolved throughout their entire history. There are no substitutes for these top tier players. I personally like Megadeth's sound with Poland the best, but all three are absolutely amazing.

@@danielegiuliani2700 it's funny. Metallica's like the biggest metal band ever, and half of their band is trash (lars and kirk) according to internet experts.
Hammett never tried to improve, I think. So he's stuck at the same soloing level he was at in the 80s, or worse. And his 80s solos were fucking legendary.
If he was playing it wrong, General Mustaine would have told him so immediately! He would have looked at him like he was crazy and said "Kiko, what are you doing?" Lol. I recently saw a concert where he did this to Kiko during symphony of destruction. It was hilarious... Any comments on this Kiko?

The world has come to a very silly point. Some stupid looser make comments about the picking technique of a real virtuoso having a serious rock music career and they finally put the guy in a position of explaining why he chooses to play this way rather than that way. Is it the power of the internet or is it the power it offers to people without making a difference between the qualified and non-qualified or simply between the wise and the dumb!...

Agreed.. Internet is good because it connects the world and its a really rich experience but the black side is that it gave voice to idiots.... Marty is still the best Megadeth lead guitar ever but surely Kiko is in second place... Here in my country we have a joke.: Say fuck you to stupid people usually is good to health. It take off the unnecessary stress.. I play guitar for fun and in my opinion there's no right or wrong way to play a song.. just use your feeling.

Hi there, i like the approach of what you said and explained in that particular song.
Through the years, i found it difficult to play only downstroke, because i thought "Why to do that (only down), when i combine the picking technique ( down-up) and play faster". After years of studying, recording and teaching, and of course, listening to music i noticed that sometimes only the downstroke approach, gives a purpose - expressio to the song. Many of us, (common guitarists), we lose ourselves in the technique, we test us in front of guitar legends (all of the famous guitarists), and see what we are doing wrong. So i try to play more... freely, and try to explain to my students, that when we play, we must LISTEN with our ears not with hands, or eyes (reading only tabs).
And of course we are all different players...

I love that he responds to the criticism with humor, but still humble. Also, of course his playing on Tornado isn’t gonna be exactly like Friedman, they’re two totally different players with different tone and picking styles. Huge respect to Kiko. IMO, best Megadeth lead player since Marty!
