Marty wrote that awesome solo, so nobody can question Marty's playing in the songs he wrote. I'm glad Kiko responded to the fans about his playing, this is very rare for guitarist on his level to do.

@Mr. Metalhorse - I've heard many RUclipsrs say he should down stroke Tornado of Souls. I don't think he was talking directly to you, but more for everyone who made the similar comment. Also the down stroke or up/down stroke doesn't really seem to change the chopping crunch sound. Even I can make it sound the same with just down or up/down strokes. What Kiko is doing to change the sound is he's hitting single strings instead of power chords, and he's letting the single notes ring out a little in the middle and towards the end. I think Kiko can play it easy up/down strokes and make it sound just like if it were all down strokes, but he likes to make it sound different. Also I think down stroking the riffs is pretty tiring after playing a few songs first. Up/down strokes is easier and less stressful.
Mr. Metalhorse I don’t think he was beating you up. Just giving you his thoughts. I gotta say, Kiko really does a great thing for his fan base. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone at his level, regularly putting out practice videos, or jam sessions or anything else. He’s absolutely a great model for others to follow. He shows that he’s a humble down to earth guy. We need more players like him who will regularly make time for the fans.
Seeing as he is the current guitarist in Megadeth, he can play it the way he wants. Is it correct to the original recording? No. It sounds completely different with upstrokes. Does it sound better or worse? That's up for debate. I prefer the way Marty Friedman originally played it. All downstrokes give it a more fast, aggressive, powerful feel; everything a thrash metal band is suppose to be.

Of course he's going to get backlash for changing notes on great classics he didn't create. If he changed the notes on Angra, people wouldn't mind because Kiko wrote songs in that band and hence can do whatever he likes to those songs. In Megadeth it's a different story, if anyone replaced Kirk Hammett on Metallica and played the songs/solos different they too would also get crap from the Metallica fans. This is what happens when you join a legendary metal band and try to change their already legendary riffs/solos. Remember when Korn played Metallica's One at the 2003 MTV Icon Awards and skipped the solo? They got shit on for doing that by hardcore Metallica fans.

There is no point in having a top tier player like Kiko in the band if he can't add his flavor to the songs. My impression is that Dave is elated to have such a talent on stage and in the studio rather than some robot who tries to sound exactly like the recording.

Na verdade, eu acho ótimo. É bom pro pessoal aprender que down picking não é nenhuma regra suprema do metal. Ainda mais falando de Megadeth, tem que ser muito tapado pra não perceber a variação dentro da música. Sem falar que tem algumas músicas que tocar elas inteiras em down picking a única coisa que você vai fazer com sucesso será cansar o braço e começar a tocar errado depois de 20 minutos.

Hi there, i like the approach of what you said and explained in that particular song. Through the years, i found it difficult to play only downstroke, because i thought "Why to do that (only down), when i combine the picking technique ( down-up) and play faster". After years of studying, recording and teaching, and of course, listening to music i noticed that sometimes only the downstroke approach, gives a purpose - expressio to the song. Many of us, (common guitarists), we lose ourselves in the technique, we test us in front of guitar legends (all of the famous guitarists), and see what we are doing wrong. So i try to play more... freely, and try to explain to my students, that when we play, we must LISTEN with our ears not with hands, or eyes (reading only tabs). And of course we are all different players... Thanks for giving me space to write some words. By the way, your playing is still very difficult for me... Thank you. Greatings from Greece, Loukas.

Funny thing is, if you watch how Mustaine plays it live through the years .... sometimes he uses down-picking only (especially during the early 90s), most times he will use alternate. Sometimes he changes even during the song, lol. The leads (Chris, Marty) used down-picking only, at least from the live footage I've seen. Anyway, nitpicking about picking styles, come on people.

There is no point in having a top tier player like Kiko in the band if he can't add his flavor to the songs. My impression is that Dave is elated to have such a talent on stage and in the studio rather than some robot who tries to sound exactly like the recording.
That is true, but Megadeth already had an extremely successful recipe that will never top.... I'll leave it right there.

Na verdade, eu acho ótimo. É bom pro pessoal aprender que down picking não é nenhuma regra suprema do metal. Ainda mais falando de Megadeth, tem que ser muito tapado pra não perceber a variação dentro da música. Sem falar que tem algumas músicas que tocar elas inteiras em down picking a única coisa que você vai fazer com sucesso será cansar o braço e começar a tocar errado depois de 20 minutos.
Nesse caso a resposta foi bem vinda e um leve chega pra lá aos chatos .

Hi there, i like the approach of what you said and explained in that particular song.
Through the years, i found it difficult to play only downstroke, because i thought "Why to do that (only down), when i combine the picking technique ( down-up) and play faster". After years of studying, recording and teaching, and of course, listening to music i noticed that sometimes only the downstroke approach, gives a purpose - expressio to the song. Many of us, (common guitarists), we lose ourselves in the technique, we test us in front of guitar legends (all of the famous guitarists), and see what we are doing wrong. So i try to play more... freely, and try to explain to my students, that when we play, we must LISTEN with our ears not with hands, or eyes (reading only tabs).
And of course we are all different players...

Funny thing is, if you watch how Mustaine plays it live through the years .... sometimes he uses down-picking only (especially during the early 90s), most times he will use alternate. Sometimes he changes even during the song, lol. The leads (Chris, Marty) used down-picking only, at least from the live footage I've seen. Anyway, nitpicking about picking styles, come on people.
