The older I get the more I realize JJ is right. All this gobbledygook is meaningless but it sounds so sensational that it makes it feel like you learned something useful while never having to actually do anything. Real political engagement that actually accomplishes things has to be localized, incremental and communal. Go to your city council and fix the potholes or the needles in your neighborhood.

    • @IneaCylean
      @IneaCylean 4 месяца назад +19

Alot of it is useful, alot of it is bullshit pulling observations about the most meaningless hyper-specific subjective or personal interpretations about literally whatever and making it sound like you're saying something of substance.
Like I almost threw up when they tried to rationalize Hegel as "girl coded", and saying something is basically "male BPD".
This shit is so stupid most of the time. Being able to use frameworks doesn't make you not an irresponsible idiot, it just tricks others into listening to what you said, or at least opening their brains to intake words and parse them to figure out what they meant in the first place.
So you get to pretend like you're doing stuff while you trick others, pass no real meaning on, pat yourself on the back, and make the world worse. So based.

I don't think JJ would call it meaningless and if he would call it that he would be wrong. But let's be real it's meaninglessnes will always be second to the fact that it's no more than just ideas. And like you say real politics has little to do with the realm of ideas.
But just to be clear "philosophy" is not useless. It is useful when we want to understand the world or moraly and intellectually grandstand but it will not help you do politics.

    explain hegel to me copypasta:
the collective totality of every human that has ever lived in history constitutes a kind of "person", the human race as a singular cohesive identity (the Geist), and has undergone a process of growth similar to the individual humans development, from baby to adulthood, and this development is what we call history. to understand humanity as a collective project, that is developing in complexity and nuance over time, not according to any one singular individuals will or direction - no part of the whole directs or even understands the whole (until Hegel, who is the first to do so, in articulating this - more on this later). philosophy is the discovery of this process, as we inspect it "after the fact" so to speak. History just happens, but using philosophy, we can discover what has happened and who we are, and this explains human civilizational and technological development from tribal, agricultural state to modern industrialized state. Hegel considers his work transcendentalist because it is in Hegel that for the first time in history, this history-spirit become "self-aware" in the literal words that Hegel is writing about it. The absolute is the end point of this development, which is also "philosophy's God", the God of Plato, the abstract first mover end final purpose of all existence, and human historical process, is the process of the absolute becoming self-aware, in the form of humanity, and Hegel's phenomenology of the spirit is the exact moment in time where the absolute recognizes itself, and he says "my pen is writing the thoughts of God". Dialectic is a word to describe the practical way that the human spirit develops, the way the culture and social development progresses "in an upwards spiral", through, essentially, trial and error.
    ...

This podcast makes my devil's advocacy twich so hard. I can easily be described as a natural "postmodern" thinker, but when she says you cant step in the same river twice my mind thinks that water is only part of what a river is. A river is a social construct that describes describes a location for human necessities. Thirst, food, navigation, social interaction, cleaning and much more.
While a river's water, rock, soil, plant, animal content is in a constant state of change, the social construct will always remain.
When i visit the Cherokee Bathtubs, i sit upon the same rocks that post relocation Cherokees sat up on, but I'll likely never touch the same river.
But if I legitimize the social construct and dont think about things too much, i can have meaningful connections with people's I can never know. I can see the ancestors of the people, plants, animals from so long ago.
I can feel the joy of children playing, hunters and fishers snagging l and w... i can feel the fears of the US gov.
That's what I like about these gals takes. If feels something like 'don't spend all your time in one river, youll miss seeing how the river changes.

I think you already understand a lot of these ideas more than you already realise, its just that the language comes across as being needlessly complicated and often contradictory, but that's kind of on purpose in order to demonstrate "the dialectic". If it comes across as contradictory, you're already learning more than you think. Don't discredit your own knowledge, but follow it through on all its threads, all the way through and back again.

these women are learning concepts by practicing them in their personal lives and allowing old patterns of logic take a more semantic and conceptual structure
five or ten years later they will realise that dialectical and Hegelian thinking is the same thing they did before they learned all those fancy words and the same thing every human being is already doing, while on the other hand they will then have the benefit of knowing with somewhat higher clarity their own thought processes than others.
There is a word for the rather unpleasant smell that so often occupies this transitory phase however, it is called pedantry.

They state that dialectical thinking would benefit politics, it is akin to stating that creating more money would benefit the economy, they are both true, but not for the reason they imagine.
More thinking itself would benefit politics, while politics is already dialectical. Politics is done by people with far more real world knowledge than any of you have gained through this momentary conceptual straightjacket that your body language and rhetorical methods already reveals the apprehension of.

If when you are describing something that you know is very different from what most people have heard you non the less insist on talking about it very fast this indicates how shallowly it sits in your mind.
And to then couple it to something that is quite distinct from it and only really associated to it in your head indicates that exact same thing.
These are the benefits of heightened fluid intelligence of childhood, but it can not fail to seem picturesque, self-centered, and certainly myopic to anyone else.

@@julianfloa If you are failing to express something in a way that most people have heard or can understand, I actually think that's a sign that this idea sits very deeply in your mind. It's cause you fundamentally think in that certain way that you'd find it hard to, I guess, un-think it and explain it in layman's terms.
I'd also say philosophers are pedantic, if they weren't then they'd be sophists.

    I think I'm in love.
'True union, or love proper, exists only between living things who are alike in power and thus in one another’s eyes living beings from every point of view; in no respect is either dead for the other. This genuine love excludes all oppositions. It is not the understanding, whose relations always leave the manifold of related terms as a manifold and whose unity is always a unity of opposites [left as opposites]. It is not reason either, because reason sharply opposes its determining power to what is determined. Love neither restricts nor is restricted; it is not finite at all. It is a feeling, yet not a single feeling [among other single feelings]. A single feeling is only a part and not the whole of life; the life present in a single feeling dissolves its barriers and drives on till it disperses itself in the manifold of feelings with a view to finding itself in the entirety of the manifold. This whole life is not contained in love in the same way as it is in this sum of many particular and isolated feelings; in love, life is present as a duplicate of itself and as a single and unified self. Here life has run through the circle of development from an immature to a completely mature unity: when the unity was immature, there still stood over against it the world and the possibility of a cleavage between itself and the world; as development proceeded, reflection produced more and more oppositions (unified by satisfied impulses) until it set the whole of man’s life in opposition [to objectivity]; finally, love completely destroys objectivity and thereby annuls and transcends reflection, deprives man’s opposite of all foreign character, and discovers life itself without any further defect. In love the separate does still remain, but as something united and no longer as something separate; life [in the subject] senses life [in the object]'.
    - Hegel, 'On Love', 1798.

Jouissance is a kinda flow state where you pursue some thing out of a passion that doesn't care a lot whether that pursuit hurts you. Playing a video game until morning is maybe a good example for it because you really wanna do it and keep going but at the same time you get really tired and exhausted but while you're playing you don't find the time to even acknowledge that it's taking a toll on you. Playing in general might be a kinda jouissance.
I'd say that it can be felt by men and women alike but potency is often associated with the phallus. The question then arises how women relate to that in their being because they don't have the phallus but of course they still have some sort of autonomy and even potency and potential to emancipate but what is it and so on and so on... The last part is obviously quite open and I don't have the answers but I guess the main reason they adressed this whole thing is because of the contradiction of feminine/phallic, the tension it causes and therefore of course: the dialectics.
      Schönen Tag auch!
