  • Today on Classic Gun Reviews I do a detailed review of the S&W 3913 9mm automatic pistol.
    Making videos we sometimes say the wrong item, even though we know the right one, here I meant disconnector not sear, and slide mounted safety not frame mounted.

      @thetnpickers I've owned the 3913 for 15+ years now. I love it. It is a bit big for my petite size and feels a bit heavier in my senior years than before. But it's comfortable in my hands. I shoot ambidextrous and it's easy to shoot with either hand.

      I’m a huge fan of their polymer handguns. I think they’re easily one of the best on the market.
      That being said there really is something special about their 3rd gen metal guns. They’re just phenomenal guns. It’s a real shame they don’t make them anymore.
      Same goes for their revolvers. The new ones are great and all but those older ones are legendary.

    The grips on the trigger guard are beneficial for resisting barrel lift when downward pressure is applied with the index finger while firing. I guess I was taught that in the 80’s

    I carried a 6906 with a 15 rd !msg (with adaptor) as my duty weapon for the last of my 30+ years service. The 3913 was my constant companion during that time. When I started police work, I carried a Model 19 and a Model 36 revolver. That was back in 1970.

      The 6906 and the 3913 and the 4013 all fit the same holster. And as you indicated the 6906 comes with 12 round mags, but the 15 round mags of the 5906 will work in the 6906 with or without the adapter.

    I have both the 6904 and 3914 DAO (blued versions) Great guns. The 3914 DAO was a special run for the NYPD. They were made for several law enforcement agencies. No safety, no decocker. it makes the pistol even slimmer! The DAO system is just fine for self defense
    I prefer these over any polymer frame striker fired handgun any day! The 3914/3913 are absolutely great carry guns.

Have often considered carrying this gun but could never bring myself to do it because of their ever increasing value and not wanting to add wear to the finish. A side note related to the N.L version of the #3913. The N.L actually stands for non lettered rather than non ladysmith - just a meaningless tidbit of info for whatever it's worth. Great video!

    • @ClassicGunReviews
      @ClassicGunReviews  3 года назад

      Hi.. the LadySmith 3913 (3913LS) is very similar to the 3913, but different in having the safety/decocker only on one side, not ambi for slimmer carry. Also it has a much more tapered dust cover (area in front of the trigger guard) that makes it smaller in that area. The grips are gray. After so many men wanted that gun to conceal carry, but without the LadySmith Logo on the pistol S&W came out with the 3913NL, speculation is the NL means Not LadySmith, lol.
      So my example is the original 3913 with regular dust cover and ambi safety.
      I actually have the LadySmith grips that I put on sometime for a different look.
      I've owned 2 of the NLs, I wish I had kept one!

    I have a 3913 in excellent condition. Due to the covid crisis and unemployment i was forced to recently put this fine handgun up for sale on multiple major firearm sales sites. To my amazement - i have not received a single response from anyone who is interested in buying it(not one!) even after listing it at an already reasonable price or best offer. Guess no-one wants these high quality all metal classic guns anymore. The plastic wonder nines are apparently all anybody cares about these days!

      Hi Tim.. sorry to hear about your situation, it's happening to so many people right now I don't know whats going to happen in the job situation. Good luck to you on your endeavers.
      Thanks for the update on the auction sites activity on these guns. I"m not surprised, I saw the same thing on Winchester Lever guns.. I talked to the sales people at two of the largest guns stores in the US and they said that buyers for the lever guns are older and selling they're collections and not buying collectible Winchesters and other older collectible guns.
      And my guess, the newer generations are not as much into hunting, and if they are it's the cheaper modern bolt actions with a scope.
      On the older S&W metal guns, including the 3913, they're aren't as many new shooters buying these.
      So many of the 3913's and other S&W vintage ones were carried by police detectives that they bought they're own guns when they retired so they were still selling. Concealed carry people too...
      There are still collectors of S&W metal guns, though just not as many, and not many buying these for carry now.
      One gun I see selling fast from gun shops is the 645 & 4506 .45ACP guns.. probably because of Miami Vice and all younger people watching it in the 80's it's a very popular gun.
      I hope you eventually don't have to sell it, but if you have to you can always sell the 3913 at a good gun shop for cash that gives you 70% of their retail price for it. Depending on condition and # of mags etc. what the retail price would be.
      Condition similar to mine here with one mag would probably be in the $425 range.

      @@ClassicGunReviews Thanks for the kind words. I've decided to just keep the 3913, i just cannot bring myself to part with it. Hope your doing better than when you wrote your reply, I two have a 3913 and a 5906 both of which I carried from their introduction by S&W as an LEO. I have never had a problem with either. I had an original 39 back in the 60s that ruined me for anything other than DA/SA. Your right though the gun is excellent but the audience is not educated enough to appreciate its design. Most shooters today know nothing but polymer striker fired pistols. Recently Sig, who has never given up their DA/SA line of all metal pistol, and who are well respected took the P 320 the polymer pistol that won them their first US Army contract and to make it more attractive is now offering it with an alloy frame, so people are starting to realize the value of a metal frame handgun! The pendulum has started to swing back the other way.

      @timrussell1559 3 года назад

      @@kencorsell8087 Agree with you 100 percent. The double/single action autos to me are some of the best designs ever made. In my opinion the decocker function on these guns make them one of safest firearms to carry as well. You're also right about the general publics fascination with all of the polymer wonder 9's that have flooded the market over the years, few appreciate the quality and superb design of these 3rd gen smiths these days. Wish the factory still offered support for these guns but as rugged as they are built they will likely never need much to keep them fully functional. Appreciate your response

    • @ClassicGunReviews
      @ClassicGunReviews  4 года назад +3

      @@caillouhead thanks.. ok so the failure to feed I believe is a result of recoil spring weakness seeing that it has 6000 rounds and it should be replaced everything 3000 rounds, it is long overdue for a recoil spring, so start there with that problem and see what happens after that. I think it will solve that problem.
      This might also solve the ejection problem since the weak recoil spring is causing the slide to operate too fast not giving the brass time to eject.
      If not that, then could be weak extractor spring, worn extractor, or ejector bent. Snap cap slowly drawn back with no mag in place should be held in place for awhile.. if the snap cap falls down right after leaving chamber then extractor might be worn.
      I'd replace the recoil spring from Wolff or S&W and see what happens. This might put the gun back in reliable working order.

      The 12 round 6906 mags go for $60-70 each themselves. I would hang on to that 6906 right now. If you haven't sold it already, the rush for people to buy the new "micro compact" 9mms, like the S&W Shield Plus, Ruger Max 9, etc. is keeping the prices of the 3rd Gen S&Ws in check. People are actually selling them relatively cheap (compared to the jacked up prices on everything else).
      I would look around for a 3913/3914 right now and keep the 6906.
